Will facetime work over satellite ISPs

Depends on the speed of the connection and whether your ISP allows it.

  • Will Facetime work on a late model iMac?

A neighbor has a late model iMac with Mountain Lion, will Facetime work if the Mac is hard wired to the internet? She tells me it used to work when she had WIFi and I'm trying to troubleshoot without spending too much time over there. So, I'm wondering if the lack of WIFI is the reason she is having trouble with Facetime/ Or should I look at other issues?

    John,
Actually, using a wired ethernet connection with the iMac is a superior way to utilize Facetime. Faster, more reliable, more secure, and you need not worry about rf interference.
I'm not too familiar with Mountain Lion, so unfortunately, I can't help with the trouble shooting any further.
I'm using Facetime on an imac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 here, and i'm using a wired connection to the internet.  It seems to me that Mountain Lion users do have more problems with FT than SL users -- don't know why.  Just a guess, but to me it seems that the problem may be related to some sort of "setting" involved with the Mountain Lion network choices.  Sorry I can't offer anything substantial to you, but wanted to let you know that your on a good track with the wired connection.

Assuming there no restriction on the network she would use blocking it, it should.

Ask AT&T to be sure about 3G coverage.

I bought my iPhone in Oklahoma, USA. Will facetime work on it when I'm in the UAE?

Carriers lock phones.  Only Carriers can unlock them.  Contact the carrier to whom your phone is locked.  See if they allow unlocking, and if they do, what the qualifications are.

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • Does Facetime work over 3-G or just Wi-Fi ?

I can't seem to connect via facetime when there is no wi-fi network available (e.g., in the woods) even though I have a 3G connection.  Any way to set that up?

No. It only works over WiFi.

  • If I buy a laptop in Canada will it work over here in the UK?

i was wondering if i bought a laptop over in canada would it work over here??

I got my last 3 Laptops (yes, 3 toshibas) from the States and use them in Europe. Everything is working as it should.
The only differences would be the TV out ... that is in Europe Pal, and in Canada NTSC, but there is no need to worry as this can be usually adjusted from inside the BIOS settings. (please have this confirmed through owners)
Also, the Canada DVD drive works in a different Region than our European Region 2, but this can be changed 4 times until it is set permanently.
The powersupply is auto-switching too, allowing you to operate your laptop from 110 Volts - 232 Volts without need to purchase a different model. Only a hardware adaptor (2 Euro max) might be necessary to make it fit inside our plugs.
The only problem that you might face is locating spare parts (mainly the chasis). I have seen some models that have different chasis in Europe and the Foreign. But in case you will need something, you will still have access to proper spare parts as they are widely spread throughout the internet.
Good bye and good buy ;)

  • Volatile DLU will not work over wired interface.

    Hi all,
I've got a weird one that has me stumped. We've got a DLU policy that is working well for our teacher accounts. It is set to user user source credentials, is not volatile, and hasn't caused us issues.
We're starting to move over and get new Windows 7 machines on the student workstation side. For our students, attempting to get a volatile DLU user set up, with a cache. In testing on desktop machines, it is failing. I'm working now on testing with a laptop and the weirdest thing keeps happening. The DLU policy applies and logins work great with a test student user - but only when attached to the wireless network. Over the wired interface (with wireless completely off), it will not work. The novell client login works, then the dreaded Zen login box comes up, with the name of the volatile login account (that should be local) in the user box. It will not go forward from that point unless I put in a local user name/password. If I do this, I can login thru the zen icon all day long, over the wired interface. This is very similar to the issues we are having on the student workstation machines, or I would just call it odd and move on.
I've simplified out my network locations to just be one network for now, so that is out as a cause. Completely disabling the wireless adapter, so that it does not show in the zmg-messages log at all did not help either. I can remote control it in that state, and it talks to ZCC.
The servers are 11.2.2 - Vmware Appliances, have not applied the monthly updates but have them in the queue. Agent the same on the workstation. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
    Thanks
    Pete

OK - Got this solved. Had applied a registry edit for teacher laptops in the summer based on this TID Support | How to configure "Computer Only Logon If Not Connected" functionality . The login issues only occurred after a teacher account had logged in. The student workstation image had the wired interface listed as 'Public', which caused the novell client to passthru and silently not attempt the login, hence the odd behavior. Oops. Have now limited that regedit to only applying to the teacher laptop workstations. Since these are some of our first student workstations, its not reared its head before. Oh well.
