My friend has the final 17 iMac before it went Intel. He can't afford Final Cut Studio. Will FCE HD 3.5 run on his iMac?

It looks as though you have everything covered.
I don't know how full your iMac's internal HD is, but the less material on it the better.
Use this FREE utility - Whatsize to get a list of all the files on your HD starting with the largest. Then you can see what is taking up space and whether it is something you can trash.
It takes a couple of minutes or so to run.

You could also defragment the HD by copying every possible file to your LaCie, deleting the originals (don't forget to empty the trash) and copying them back from the LaCie.
Incidentally you don't say whether you have used FCE before?

I have used FCP 5 quite a bit, at school, and really liked it. Now, I'm graduating, but cannot afford Final Cut Studio - hence wondering if FCE 3.5 would do. Any thoughts? The Apple software page is a bit unclear concerning what the precise differences are between FCP and FCE.
Will layering multiple (4+) video tracks work as well in FCE as it does in FCP?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

You can FCE with a MacBook. FCE Will work like FCP, but its performance is dependent on the speed of your processor. The faster the processor the more real-time capabilities you'll have.

Will SL backup on TM work on newest iMac??

Hi everyone, i have a problem and i will try to explain as best as i can. It is a little long but i hope someone will be able to help me.
The main question: is it possible restore backup from my old iMac (10.6) onto my newest 10.9 iMac?? the reason why i want to do this is that i had wd passport attached to my old iMac and secured with wd's password, which was always remembered by the system. Once i purchased my new iMac i transferred everything over using migration assistant. at that point everything worked like a charm. Everything transferred over even my wd passport credentials so there was no need for me to enter wd password to access my external drive. Then system updated to maverics and when i tried to access my wd passport external drive it asked for the password, which i of course forgot because i didn't have the need to use since it was always remembered. Now i have no way of accessing that drive without entering the password.
Now i had TM backup from my old iMac (10.6) which remembered my wd external drive password. my theory is that if i restore using that backup i will be able to access my drive without entering the password like it was on my old iMac. So if i restore using that backup will it work?? will there be cpu issues since my new iMac has newer cpu which didn't exist when my old system was backup up??

The simple answer is, No. Snow Leopard cannot boot your new computer. You could restore individual files from the old backup, but that would be all you can do. I'm afraid I don't quite understand how your password did work but then stopped. You said it happened when you updated to Mavericks, but your computer should have come with Mavericks already installed.
I suggest you consider:
Contact WD to find out if it's possible to recover from a forgotten password.
Connect the drive to your new computer and re-partition and reformat it, if that's possible.
Connect the drive to your old computer in order to recover or alter the password.

Will a 16x DVD+R work in the iMac Superdrive?

I'm new to DVD burning and I just bought my first batch of blank DVD's. The package has a warning to make sure your drive can handle 16x DVD's.
I know the burner will only burn at a Max Speed of 8x, but will 16x discs work OK in the drive? or should I return them for 8x discs.

Just for the record... I burned a couple of 16x +R's in my internal Apple drive at 8x, one in my LaCie at 16x and both played well on both Intel machines BUT when I first tried to play the one burned on Apple drive in my Denon DVD-1920, I got a message that it couldn't be played. I hit the eject button then inserted it again and it played.
The 'old' conventional wisdom - that DVD-R is more compatible with more players SEEMS to be loosing some ground... and there are more and more DVD recorders (for both home A/V and for use with computers) that can use either DVD-R or DVD+R that it's a hard call to make. I'm going to take a cue from Dad of 3 and try the +R in my other computers and DVD players to see if I get the "hiccup" that I got on my Denon - or if it just won't play at all.
Three months back I had never used anything buy DVD-R but when I bought my 16x LaCie with Lightscribe (and wanted to try Lightscribing) all my dealer had was DVD+R (and that seems to be the doing flavor for Lightscribe DVDs - I ran into one great media Internet store on the web that I forgot to bookmark that had some good info).
Anyway, yes 16x media will burn in an 8x drive (or, I should say, mine did - DVD recorders all seem to have their own personalities) and yes, I have successfully played DRD+R's on 3 of the 6 DVD devices that I own (I don't have any game consoles) but I if you wanted to stick to 'tried and true' I would probably buy DVD-R or get a 3 or 10 pack of DVD+R's and give them a shot.
All the folks who will be receiving my DVD at Christmas will be getting DVD+R (unless I can find some Lightscribe DVD-R'S) so I'm hoping they work!

Will Win 7 32 bit work an a iMac

I'm buying a 2009 or later iMac. I have a few work programs I need to run from home so will go the bootcamp route. Newbie with Mac's here but bought my wife a MacMini mid 2014 and so now I want something for myself but hampered by work requirements.
I've been trying to figure out if the intel based iMac that I finally buy will have a specific need for either 32 or 64 bit windows. I have a friend offering a new Win 7 32 bit for not so cheap, so don't want to spend the money and not be able to use it.
Can I use a 32 bit version of windows on any 2009 or later intel based iMac?

You need to check the specs of the Mac you are buying,
Operating Systems come in either 64 or 32 bit architecture. 32bit OS will run on any hardware but 64bit OS will only run on 64bit capable hardware. You can also run 32bit OS on 64bit hardware but it will not use all of the hardware's capability.
Because the Windows version you have is 32bit it will work on any Intel based iMac using Bootcamp.
This excerpt from everymac.com appears to suggest all iMacs from 09 onwards are both 32/64bit capable.
The 3rd column is the boot capabilities.

I want to start importing my video footage into either imovie or FCP connecting an old VHS to my Canopus ADVC-100 and then the Canopus to the mac
I am guessing i just need a firewire converter or something? Can someone advise which cable i need?

I haven't had any need for this new firewire port on the back and wondered if i invested in a firewire converter it would work or whether the hardware is too old for the imac?

I'm not sure why there would be conflicts. The ouput of the ADVC is pure DV video, that's the beauty of the ADVC, it doesn't need any proprietary drivers or capture applications like most USB solutions do, so it isn't really OS dependent in any way. As long as your application understands DV cameras you should be OK. I've used my ADVC-55 with Snow Leopard before and am now using it with Lion, with iMovie.

It will automatically connect to I Tune when I plugged in I phone or I pad mini. It didn't work since last month. I went to Apple shop ask for help but a Mr. told me you didn't support the Technic for windows, is that right?

Apple Stores won't directly support issues with your Windows PC, even if the issue is iTunes which you need to configure your iDevice.

Will an Infra-Red Adapter work with a macbook pro retina display so I can use the apple TV remote for presentations?

I have always used the apple TV remote for my presentations. I bought a retina display last year for the betterment of my presentations and now I have to stand near my computer and hit a button to change my slides where as before I used my remote. Will a infra-red adapter work with the apple TV remote in the macbook pro retina display? Love my computer, but very disappointed not to have a remote for presentations that does not need the internet. Does anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I used that and it works great if you have wireless connection. Im looking for a remote that worked like the apple TV remote. My questions is, "Is there a USB infra-red remote that works with mac. I have found this one: Keyspan EZ1 easy presenter. It claims with works with PC and Mac and the reviews are good. Does anyone know anything about it or if it works with retina display macs?

Drag and Drop not working since last software update

Drag and Drop not working since last software update - this is occuring on Outlook for the mac and I just tried moving an icon on the doc and the same thing occured. YOu can drag but the items will not drop.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Will FCE automatically log embedded metadata when ingesting QT .mov files?

I'm trying to figure out whether to purchase FCE to help in a large project. I am about to create a couple of hundred QT files that I want to bring into FCE for editing. Each file will be tagged (logged) when created to allow searching in ITUNES. The tags reside in the INFO/COMMENTS field in the .mov container.
*Will FCE recognize the QT tags on ingestion? Can FCE automatically populate each file's logs with the appropriate tags?*
Obviously, a yes answer will save a huge amount of work. And, I welcome any alternative approaches.

Any chance it works the other way, i.e can tags/log info be exported to the source .mov file.
Am I missing some other strategy to share tags/logging between FCE (or any NLE for that matter) and embedded metadata in the source files (QT in this case)

"Unable to find PPoE server" - worked fine last night!

*The set up:*
Belkin ADSL modem (with ethernet jack)
TC 500gb
MacBook Air
I have the Belkin ADSL modem (not a router) connected to the Time Capsule using an ethernet cable. When I set up the modem, I used a web based interface to enter the username/password settings for my connection. The modem connected ok, and works fine.
During the Time Capsule set up procedure, I was asked how I wanted to connect to the internet. I was given the option of Ethernet, or PPoE.
Assuming Ethernet was the correct option to use, I selected this. However, an error message was received telling me that the amber light would not stop blinking until this was resolved.
I therefore changed the setting to the only other one available, which was PPoE. On the next screen, I was asked to enter my username/password for my internet connection, which I did.
This was successful, the light went green, and I could access the internet.
That was last night.
*The problem:*
This morning, I decided to change the name from "Chris's Time Capsule" to just "Time Capsule". After clicking update settings, I am now receiving the message about the amber blinking light again. I am told this issue needs to be resolved, and I can no longer access the internet.
So I have tried chosen Ethernet from the menu again, however this does not work. Choosing PPoE no longer works now either.
I'm confused why the device has suddenly decided to not work, despite working fine last night with exactly the same settings. Also, all I changed was the name of the device- I'm suprised this has resulted in the Time Capsule not working anymore.
Can anyone perhaps suggest a solution?

Hi Uma,
Open your SAP MMC and from menu option select file->add/remove snapin...
Click on add button and then select "SAP Systems manager".
Click next on the next screen and then specify System ID, Instance (as hostname instanceNumber) and then click on add button.
It will add this system in the list in sapmmc.
