Will FCP X Run Smoothly On This iMac?

I am thinking of purchasing the 27" 3.1 GHz iMac with 12GB RAM (default 2x2 with an additional 2x4).  Will FCP X and Motion 5 run smoothly on this or would I need to upgrade to 16GB RAM, 3.4 GHz, and the AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB?

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance. It should help you set things up correctly if you decide to go for FCP X - a truly amazing application.
Make sure you're using the latest version - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on the Hard Drive that your System and your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
If you are short of drive space, use ProRes 422 Proxy (FCP X Preferences > Playback) - but remember to select High Quality when you export your movie.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Can't get Quicktime HD movie files to run smoothly on my iMac G3

I've got a slot loading imac crt/ G3 933mhz 596mb of ram; and updated it to tiger and quicktime 7 pro. Everything was fine. I marvelled at HD quicktime movies and videos in iTunes, but all of a sudden, any new hd files I download from iTunes or the quicktime site won't play smoothly. I found a shockwave file doing the same thing. It's as if my broadband has suddenly gone 56k. I know this isn't the case because I plugged my laptop in to the modem and it's fine. Has anyone else had a similar problem. Perhaps my processor and graphics card can't handle the latest quicktime software. The problem doesn't happen with audio files, and also stll happens to video files after they've completed downloading. The puzzling thing is it was fine until I tried to view previews and trailers in the iTunes store.

Newer H.264 encoded video requires more computer power (and a good video card).
Our G3 machines just can't keep up. Even most of Tiger's "eye candy" will not display on your G3.
Avoid QuickTime content that says "HD" in its name or uses H.264 video. Nothing is wrong with your older iMac. It's just under powered.

  • PLEASE HELP! Will Adobe CS2 run on a G4 iMac?

I currently own two HP Media Centers that are less than a year old; they both have AMD Athlon X2 Processors and 2 GB of RAM. Neither of them can handle Adobe CS2. I have been on with HP tech support for 5 days straight, trying to get this issue resolved. Only to find out that there are compatibility issues between Adobe CS2 and Windows XP. I need a computer that will run Adobe CS2. I want to purchase a used Mac that will be able to handle it, since they are the industry standard for graphic design. Will a 17" Flat Panel iMac with 1 GHz G4 Processor and 512 MB - 1 GB of RAM be able to handle the programs? Please help. I work from home and need to get a new computer ASAP to be able to get work done for my clients.
Flat Panel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It sounds like you have already purchased the Adobe Suite. That being the case, and since you are looking at a laptop, you have a couple of choices.
First, look for a refurbished Powerbook G4 on Apple's store website. I have purchased computers from ebay, but you really take a chance doing that, especially if you don't know what specific questions to ask the sellers... The Powerbook G4 will run the Adobe CS2 faster than the MacBooks at this time because of the Rosetta issue (emulation issue--the intel processor cannot read the "old" PowerPC code without translation and that takes some time).
Second, go ahead and get your MacBook and live with the slightly reduced performance of your Adobe CS2. It will still run much faster than what it does on your current G3. Then, wait for Adobe to join the Universal band wagon and upgrade (Adobe's upgrade pricing is generally very reasonable). At that time, you will be in a position to take full advantage of the speed of your new MacBook or MacBook Pro.
If it were me, I'd go for the MacBook Pro and deal with the reduced performance for now.
    Good luck with your decision.

  • Will FCP 7 run in Mavericks 10.9.1

    Hi,
I'm running an iMac 27" (mid 2011) 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB.
I have a question about Mavericks (10.9.1). I called Apple and they couldn't guarantee that FCP 7 or any other third party programs such as Toast 9, DVD SP4, Compressor 3.5.3, Streamclip, Motion 4.0.3, Epson NX 415 scanner, etc.
I'm especially concerned about FCP 7 because, although I have taken and plan to re-take the FCP X Rippletraining tutorial for which I need Mavericks to run FCP X on, I still have some ongoing FCP 7 projects that I want to be able to run.
Apple suggests backing up my current OS (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) on Time Machine and re-installing if necessary.
Have you heard of any problems with Mavericks and FCP 7 and any other 3rd party programs that run OK on Mountain Lion?
    Thanks,
    Phil

Yes, I've heard of problems. Just today someone said that Log and Transfer didn't work properly...kept crashing the system.
    http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1181053
There have been reports of it not launching, exporting out of sync...saying CODEC NOT FOUND when working with XDCAM. How far ranging is that? Dunno. We only hear about the problems on the forums, not the successes. If you sat in the waiting room at a hospital you'd think everyone was sick, that there was some sort of pandemic.
I do know others that have reported now issues. But it all depends on what part of it you use...I guess.  The OS wasn't designed for FCP 7 in mind.  If you must use it to earn a living, I HIGHLY recommend you install it on an older OS, or keep around the older computer that you have it installed on to revisit those projects.

  • Will FCP 5 run on the newest MacBook Pro?

I am planning on getting a new MacBook Pro but I need to know if my FCP 5 will run on it. Or do I need 5.1. If so is there an update from 5 to 5.1. I haven't been able to find anything on Apple's suport site. It is too expensive for me to go the whole FCP Studio 2 upgrade. If I could onlu upgrade FCP I would.

    Hi,
Yes you need 5.1, it was a paid upgrade from 5.0, Apple only sells FCS2 now. You may find 5.1 on Ebay -- but make sure you get original Apple discs.

  • I have an old Power Mac 5.1 with an Inter Quad Core Xeon processor. (OS10.6.8) Will FCP 5.1 work with this computer?

I'm trying to recreate some edits with an old project file. The computer is older (this is all a friend's machine) and we're trying to transfer a project I've been working on to his machine. WIl it work?

I'm a bit confused, PowerMac 5.1 is the old G4 Cube, Quad Core Xeons would be a Mac Pro 1.1 to 6.1, but if you're asking about running it on the IntelMac in 10.6.8...
According to this... not very well...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
Final Cut Pro FCP 5.1.4 http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/ occasionally freezes, occasionally crashes, sometimes require restart to run.

  • Will GTA 4 run smooth in Bootcamp

Im sorry if this is not closely related to Apple products but I would just like to know from someone's experience if Bootcamp plays GTA 4 smoothly or any other games.
    Thanks

Check the game requirements against your hardware for minimums. I used it on a 2010 MBP, i7, 8GB ram, Nvidia GT 330M. It ran ok after the publisher fixed alot of bugs so get the letest patches..

  • Will Final Cut Pro X run smoothly on a MacBook?

I have a MacBook running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6, and I'm thinking of switching from good old iMovie to Final Cut Pro X.
I already see that I need to upgrade to 10.6.8 or higher, but apart from that, will FCP Pro X run smoothly on this machine?
If not, does the Mac Store sell older versions of FCP Pro? Like 7?
I do have a 1.5 TB external drive (USB).
    Thanks for you help!
    Mathijs

If you don't get an answer here, you may want to post this question in the FCPX discussion here.

  • Will I be happy with a new iMac & FCE4?

I am considering upgrading for the primary purpose of being able to edit AVCHD video in FCE4.
Your thoughts are appreciated... am I correct in my assumptions below? I do not have the $$ for a new MacPro, so...
I have a Power Mac (Tower) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2G of RAM and about 750 G of HD space.
I am thinking I want to sell it and get a 20" iMac. Why? A couple of reasons:
    1 - Faster (am I right)
2 - Better for video editing (intel) with my new AVCHD SONY SR11
    3 - Smaller footprint
4 - I anticipate next OS to be intel only and want to sell before that turn of events lowers the value of my tower even more
5 - Looks like I can get nearly 1k for my current setup, thus only being out about $400-$500
    Your thoughts?
Are their any reasons I shouldn't make this switch? Will FCE4 work fast on a new 20" iMac? Of course, I will need to buy an external BluRay burner, but oh well...
    Dwaine

"Fast" is a relative term, but FCE4 will run fine on this iMac. It would also run on your G5, but working with AVCHD footage requires an Intel processor.
There's no BluRay support in iDVD. I think Toast offers it.

  • Will iPod Touch run under 10.4.9?

I have a mini PPC and my daughter has an intel MacBook, both running 10.4.9 I am hesitant to upgrade to 10.4.11 due to all the problems I have been reading about, as we both you Adobe CS3 and there there have been a number of compatibility issues with this upgrade. Will the Touch run or is this just the way it is...only 10.4.10 or higher or go to Leopard?
    Thanks, Colin

Well you could try it, but If you go and spend the money on an iPod Touch and it doesn't work you would have to upgrade for it to work. A way to test this without buying it is to try with a friends and see what it does.

  • How can I stop the fan from running continuously on my iMac?  I have tried resetting the SMC and this did not work.

I have a 27 in. iMac OS X, Version 10.7.5, Intel Core i5 and have a problem with the very loud and annoying fan running continuously.  The fan starts up immediately upon powering up and stays on all the time.  I have researched this on the internet and have tried resetting the SMC unsuccessfully.  Should I try fan control software?

To reset the SMC means to reset the power management settings for your Mac. To do this, follow these simple steps.
    1) Shutdown your Mac by going to the Apple Logo in the upper left hand corner of the screen and selecting "Shut Down" from the drop down menu.
    2) Turn your machine back on while continuing to hold down the power button.
    3) After the initial boot chime, your power indicator light should flash three times.
    4) Your screen will remain black and you will hear the boot chime again. At this point, you may release the power button and allow your Mac to boot up normally.
All the best with getting your Mac Mini to run smoothly.

  • What is the latest OS this iMac can run?

What is the latest version of system software this iMac can run? My data from About This Mac includes: Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version: 1.20f4
If the latest version can be used, what do I need to order to get there?

Officially your upgrade path is the Mac Box Set - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC581Z/A
But if you just want to update the OS, then the Snow Leopard disk will not mind that you're on Tiger. Remember to take a full backup beforehand - preferably a clone of the disk (Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or Disk Utility will do this) because I think SL will fully blank the disk so you'll need the clone to do a User Migration from after the install completes.
The Box Set is the better deal if you want iLife and iWork updated too.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!
