Will FCPX "direct capture" w/o simultaneous recording on tape?

FCPX allows direct capture/import from my Firewire-connected Canon HDV camera only when I am simultaneously recording to a tape installed in the camera. iMovie allows direct capture WITHOUT simultaneous recording on tape.  Is there any way for FCPX to capture video truly DIRECTLY, i.e., without simultaneous recording on tape?  ... Thanks!

FCP had separate device control options, which are not available in the current version. The application does very little for tape based formats. There are other tools that can capture from tape or from live ingest, AJA and Black Magic have their own. You might try the QT player.

  • How can I capture video directly into FCP without recording to tape first?

I hooked my Sony VX2000 to the computer via firewire and opened the Log and Capture dialog box. The video from my camera shows correctly in the preview window.
I click the Capture Now button and the capture window opens but no video displayed. The message below the window says "Waiting for Timecode".
I guess the camera doesn't send timecode when it's not recording so I press the record button. Now video shows up in the capture window. After 16 frames it freezes and an error box pops up that says "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully."
Foiled again! This has been a problem from time to time when I want to capture video from a source that does not supply timecode.
Is there any settings I can change to capture video directly from a camera using FCP without having to record it to tape in one step and then capture it in a second step?

I thought I had tried that. Thanks, that was the answer.
I am aware of the danger of not having tape backup. Having worked with the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 it is a chore to free up the P2 cards fast enough to keep from starving the camera crew. Copying the P2 contents to a single hard drive is the practice but leaves the whole shoot at the mercy of a single point of failure.
As far as my capturing directly to HD, it isn't a problem for short podcasts that could be recreated quickly if lost. Also, I can still record to tape in the camera but avoid the second step of capture when I'm in my edit bay anyway.
    Peace,

  • Is it possible to do the audio capture and playback simultaneously?

    In short :
Is it possible to do the audio capture and playback simultaneously? . If it is not supported directly by Sun, pl suggest another way to achieve the same.
    In detail:
I am doing a voice chat application by using the streaming through UDP . I am able to play the byte stream. But , is it possible to capture sound simultaneously (while playing the audio) to send to the other end?

If you're Airplaying from you computer, you might be able to do this. Here's what I would try:
Go to the Airplay icon in iTunes. You should see both your Apple TV and your speakers listed as options. Select "Multiple speakers." You'll see both devices together. Turn the volume all the way down on the Apple TV. You should be getting the video on the TV, but only hear audio through the speakers.
Using the "Multiple Speakers" option will sync the output of your devices so that the sound matches the picture.
I haven't tried this myself, but I'm thinking this would work. However, this approach will only work when using Airplay from your computer – not from am iPad or iPhone – as they don’t have the "Multiple Speakers" option (as far as I know). It also won't work with content streamed directly to your ATV, obviously, because there's no way to stream from ATV to other devices.
Let me know if this works.

  • Shoot direct to QuickTime Pro vs. typical DV tape and capture

I own and run a harmonica instruction website. I'm going to add instructional video to the mostly text based lessons on the site. I have a Canon GL1, G5 Dual 2.3, FCP, and I'm shooting with an 3 point lighting setup in my office/studio.
I can turn the camera on, setup the lights, and record direct to QuickTime Pro in it's Device Native mode. Will the quality ultimately be the same as if I record to a DV tape and then capture to FCP? It's certainly faster going direct to QT PRO, but I do have a built-in tape backup system by recording first with the GL1 and I don't want to sacrifice quality if that's the case.
    Thanks for your help,
    Dave Gage

I have an XL1s and have been forced to use the direct capture via QTpro (due to a broken tape mechanism) and I must say, it works great. It captures as DV - same quality as going to tape; however once it is done recording, you must export as a dv stream in order to get the file to be recognized by FCP. I have yet to see any difference between this method and capturing to tape, but then again, I have no choice. If you have the extra hard disk space to spare, I recommend avoiding tape, but it's up to you.
By the way, does anyone know why FCP doesn't recognize the raw capture files? It uses the DV codec to capture in QT, so why does it not work?

  • Will FCPx be "Free to Download" If I purchase it with a MAC?

Will FCPx be "Free to Download" If I purchase it with a MAC? (IE: Chose FCPx as Pre-installed App)
    Thanks
    Caleb

If you are purchasing from Apple directly, it should be as Luis describes but make sure you enquire about the exact details.
Note that you will not be able to update FCP X  if you buy a used computer with it already installed as it will be in the name of the original purchaser.
There may also be some unscrupulous outlets who will sell new computers with pirated software  .  .  .  so be careful to check everything out.

  • I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

"I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R"
    How? Using what equipment/software?
"The DVD  plays on the device on which it was recorded."
Just a guess: You're using a VCR-DVD combo recorder. DVDs produced in this way will play on the device that made them, but won't play on anything else until they're "finalized." In fact, Macs will recognize unfinalized DVDs as blank discs until the discs are finalized. Check the manual that came with the recording device for instructions.

When will FCPX be able to import Panasonic FZ-150 1080p/60 video?
The only format supported now is interlaced 1080i/30.
Are there any third-party options of getting 1080p/60 into FCPX now?

Thank you Tom and Hugh. Yes it's a AVCHD DSLR.
If I could ask one more question.
What would pros and cons be between ClipWrap and the free converters?
Obviously, for me the most important would be the resulting image quality.

  • Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.

  • Simultaneous Recording in file and  playing incoming rtp stream

I want to Simultaneous Recording in file and  playing incoming rtp stream.I have cloned the data source. After cloning I created two data sinks and two processors. One processor/datasink is meant for recording the stream in a file and other processor/data sink is used to play the rtp through speaker.
But at a time I am only able to achieve one operation i.e either recording or playing. For recording into the wav file I have to put Thread.sleep(30) so that I can record the rtp into the file.During this time I am not able to play the audio through speaker.I also create separate thread but this does not help.
Please give suggestion on how to resolve this issue.

thanks for the reply, but I think I've already solved the problem.

  • Unnable to capture anything. It records only blank files

When i open the capture window, i can watch the tape and control the camera. When i press "record" it starts recording, but the remaining disk space -meter does not decrease, but the minutes recorded -meter is counting. When i stop the recording process, nothing happens. If i browse the harddrive, i find the video files, but they only use 140-150kb, and is of corse useless. I tried to record using another program (DVapp) and this works.
. I also often get a pink bar on either the left or right side of the preveiw.
The camera has worked before on Premiere 6.5 on Windows 2000 and XP
I added the FireWire-card after i installed Premiere, but i re-installed premiere afterwards.
This is my new computer with the issues:
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
    2x Samsung SpinPoint 250GB 7200 SATA
1x Western Digital 750GB 7200 SATA (This holds the "recordings")
    Intel Core2Quad Q6600 4 x 2.4GHz x64
    6GB RAM DualChanel
    Nvidia GeForce 9800GT
The Windows Experience Index is 5.7
The Camera is a Panasonic NV-DS5

I think that you answered this, but to clarify, with the newly added IEEE-1394 card, DVapp does Capture fine. Is that correct, or did you add the card after you tried the other Capture application?
There was a recent thread, where all of the Captured files were listed as 0KB. Do not recall if it was in this sub-forum, or not. If I can find that, I'll get you a link. Do not recall if there was resolution, or not. Might be similar enough to provide some help, or maybe moot.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] No Matrox, or BlackMagic, etc. cards, right?

Will FCPX work on my macbook pro? Will it be really slow?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It depends on your card. See > http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/ You need a Intel HD Graphics 3000 or better. If you haven't got this graphic card, you can't use Final Cut Pro.
Also, note that it will work properly if you have a dedicated card, like the one that has got a 15-inch MacBook Pro

  • Directories Corrupted: Will FCPX recognise after repair ?

    Hi there,
I think I am in deep problem now. My hard disk is a Raid system. 4x3TB = total 12TB but 3 TB is for backup. So in effect usage space is 9TB. But now used up 7TB (called it original harddisk)
I took my iMac to a shop and it dis some verify and tried to repair the disk using Disk Utility. But it cannot repair.
Apparently, he said that my hard disk is okay but it has a directory corrupt problem. That is why now my FCPX cannot read all the data. All my media files for FCPX are stored in this 9TB external hard disk.
So, I was told the steps to do are:
    1)  copy all these 7TB data from Original hard disk into a new hard disk (called it haddisk B).
    2) Then reformat the old 9TB hard disk (which we earlier called as original hard disk).
    3) Then I copy back from hard disk B into Original Harddisk 9TB
Question is will FCPX be able to recognise again my media files from the Original hard disk in (3) above?
    Thanks

Thanks Russ, I think dare not take the risk of using DiskWarrior as i read someone said that it may alter some of the files ?
Below is the description of my RAID hard disk:
My RAID hard disk is only used as external hard disk. I used it to store all my media files and video files. So all my library and events are in this external harddisk
I notice the following behaviour  with files located in this external raid hard disk. The files can be read. It cannot be modified. The files cannot be copied into this same hard disk. It also cannot be deleted.  I cannot amend the files (e.g. in Word). But I can view the video i created in FCPX.
But I can copy the files in this Raid hard disk to my Macintosh HD. And this file which I copied into the Macintosh HD, it can be modified, amended and behave as normal.
So, I am quite confident that once I coped this raid hard disk to another new hard disk, all the files should behave normally.
The question is then how do FCPX recognise this new hard disk that I copied over ? Will naming the new harddsik exactly as the raid hard disk suffice ?
    Thanks

  • Will FCPX run on an 11" Macbook Air?

Will FCPX run on an 11" Macbook Air?

Well, call me foolish but I'm attempting to run FCP X on an 11-inch Mac Air attached to a Thunderbolt display with FCP X's Project and Event folders on a 4TB G-RAID Thunderbolt external drive. So far, it is not a good experience. Just to mount and scrub through a project already underway (a several-minute, 720p video with simple transitions) produces the dreaded spinning beach ball of death on a regular basis. I honestly don't know if my Air's 1.8 GHz CPU simply isn't robust enough to handle high definition video or if it's a Thunderbolt issue. My plan was to use the Air to work on simple projects when traveling. I can get everything loaded into the timeline and it will play for a minute or so, then it stops and the beach ball begins to spin. Several minutes later, things seem to break free and the show again plays, but soon stops again. I've got a feeling I'm asking the CPU to do too much -- but it's worth trying. I assumed that heavy duty rendering might stress the system but the struggle just to play back the timeline is a surprise.
Has anyone out there had success?

  • Simultaneously record desktop and webcam?

Is there a way to simultaneously record my desktop and also myself via a webcam? Basically I would like a screen in screen The desktop showing a variety of steps and my head in the bottom right walking them through the process.
I see it a lot, but am not sure how to do it. Help would be appreciated.

You don't have to record both with Captivate.  Just use Captivate to record your screens in the application.
You can use the Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder to record your web cam as an FLV:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/
Then you'll probably need to edit the FLV video in another app to cut out bits you don't want.
You can add the finished talking head video to the upper area of your TOC to accompany your content.  This is one of the options for Slide Video, but it's slightly difficult to find.
