Will Final Cut Pro X work on this old Mac Pro?

Hello,
I'm running OS 10.6.8 on this computer:
Model Name: Mac Pro
  Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
  Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
  L3 Cache: 8 MB
  Memory: 16 GB
I want to upgrade my OS. So I know I'll have to upgrade FCP from 6 to X. Will it work okay on my old Mac Pro?
Thanks.

It's a little more complicated than that.
I've got to update my OS from 10.6.8 because I need to update some other programs. Once I do that, I can't use my FCP 6 anymore.
So the only way to try it out is to update the OS.
I think I'll look into upgrading the VRAM if that's possible.
Thanks.
Have you thought about a dual boot system?
This way you do not have to change any existing stuff.
BTW: I had exactly the same tower as yours and it was the graphics card that was the weak link.
In my case I upgraded to a newer Mac.

I'm with Jon on this one. I know someone who uses FCP 5.0 on a MacBook Pro, he has all sorts of wierd issues including:
Projects he has created throwing up an error message "Unreadable on this machine" when re-opened.
Projects losing and refusing to connect to render files.
Dissolves simply not working -this is not to do with lack of handles, it just happens.
LiveType and FCP's own title generator files not automatically compositing.
Lots of kernel panics and unexpected quits.
These might not happen all the time, but always crop up at the worst possible moment.
I can move his project files and media to my setup and everything works.

Will Final Cut Pro X work with Yosemite?

me too version 10.8. It would have been nice to know yosemite was going to crap out my primary video editing software! I use this for my video editing for my business video production and it would have been nice to know ahead of time or here's a crazy idea how about the software developers who are making millions off final cut pro sales release a fix BEFORE apple roles out yosemite for free. I don't have time to chase down every blog in the world to see issues etc. The reason I bought a mac is I just need it to work so I can work on my business.

  • If I update to Snow Leopard, will final cut pro still work?

If I update to Snow Leopard, will final cut pro still work? My current version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.6. Thanks.

Apple is not telling you the Complete story about Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 is Power PC code/ IBM CPU code, which Lion does not support.
FCP 6 is NOT Power PC code, it will run on Lion and Mountain Lion, as I have read on many posts.
    The solution??
Solution condition where FCP 6 installed and upgrading OS to Lion
Do nothing, its already running OK
Solution condition where FCP 6 not installed and OS Lion installed.
Connect a firewire drive to your MAC and install the old OS on it (eg snow leopard) ,
    Reboot to that OS
    Install FCP 6
Reboot to your new OS   (EG Lion)
    Run FCP 6

  • Will Final Cut Pro X recognize Avid Mojo interfacing with Broadcast Pix?  If so, how do I accomplish this?

Our church used an HP for 12 years that was refurbished and finally died.  We captured Sunday services for broadcast using Avid Express connected to a Broadcast Pix Switcher via an Avid Mojo with a firewire cable.  This week, I replaced it the HP with a Mac in hopes of using Final Cut Pro to capture and edit video for broadcast.  Will Final Cut Pro X recognize Avid Mojo interfacing with Broadcast Pix?  If so, how do I accomplish this?  Currently I have the mojo connected to the Mac via a firewire adapter through the thunderbolt port.  However, the Mac isn't seeing the mojo or the cameras connected to the switcher.

    Just turned off background rendering.
I'm not certain what you mean for specs in a specific point in the video, but here are the specs for the entire edit I initially received:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,083
Size: 951,735,770 bytes (951.7 MB on disk)
Here are the specs for the exported video that has the audio issue:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,274
Size: 966,817,082 bytes (966.8 MB on disk)
The video is 10:28 minutes long and the audio leaves at 5:57.
If that wasn't what you were looking for, just let me know. I'm not very good with technical stuff sometimes so may have misunderstood.
Is there something I should have done to the piece before I began color correcting it, like transcoding?

Look at this technical specs document, your system should be fine with the possible exception of Color.
As for managing your preference files, use Digital Rebellion's tool.
    Good luck.

will final cut pro X 10.0.8  still be available for purchase after the new final cut pro release for mavericks/new macpro in december?

10.0.8 is no longer available, except in the trial version. The current sale version is 10.0.9. Apple has never sold older versions of their software, only the current version. That's not going to change in the near future.

will final cut pro X speed up if i upgrade my ram and don't upgrade my processor?  iMac 2.9 GHz i5 with 8 GB ram

the most improving effect on 'speed' is distributed media:
System/App, Projects, Events, Cache, backups on diff. platters. Esp. when using compounds/multicams, each 'angle' on its own drive...
To improve 'rendering' = export speed, the graphic card is the limiting factor.
On my slow system, 8GB was nice, 16GBs made it more 'snappier' ...

  • Will Final Cut Pro X work with mavericks

Was thinking about upgrading to Mavericks on my Mac Book Pro Retina but wanted to know, 1) will it use a lot more storage and 2) will it work with Final Cut Pro X?

When I was running the supposed GM of Mavericks just before it was released, FCPX wouldn't let me import ANYthing into it. When the import window would open it wouldn't let me choose anything. FCPX became useless and I would have to force quit it. So, I'm a little hesitant to upgrade to it today.

  • Will Final Cut Pro X run smoothly on a MacBook?

I have a MacBook running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6, and I'm thinking of switching from good old iMovie to Final Cut Pro X.
I already see that I need to upgrade to 10.6.8 or higher, but apart from that, will FCP Pro X run smoothly on this machine?
If not, does the Mac Store sell older versions of FCP Pro? Like 7?
I do have a 1.5 TB external drive (USB).
    Thanks for you help!

If you don't get an answer here, you may want to post this question in the FCPX discussion here.

  • Will Final Cut Pro X transfer to a new Mac?

I'm thinking about purchasing Final Cut Pro X in the next few weeks, but I also plan to replace my computer by the end of the year. If I download the app onto my current mac, will I also be able to install it on my new Mac when I get it?

    Yes...
The Final Cut Pro X license agreement states that you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install and use the Apple Software only on Apple-branded computers that you own or control in accordance with the Mac App Store Product Usage Rules located at http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/ ("Mac Usage Rules"). Except as permitted under the Mac Usage Rules, you may not distribute or make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple devices at the same time.

  • Can't get Final Cut Express to work on my I Mac desktop

    Hi All,
I just purchased an I Mac - the first in my life. I simply couldn't get Final Cut express to work on my station cos it keeps telling me I need Accelerated Graphics Port. I wonder what it is. My Mac fulfills all the specs for Final Cut Express to work, but it keeps prompting me that I need the AGP when I click on the icon. If you have any clue and even bette, the remedy, can you please drop me a msg here, thanks!

I guess you purchased the Intel based iMac, but you have Final Cut Express version 3.0 or older. This version is for older Macs based on PowerPC.
If this is the case, as a temporary solution you may simply bypass the AGP error message by pressing ESC when this appears, and then you'll be able to work with FCE 3.0, even though emulated by Rosetta.
The best solution is to upgrade to FCE 3.5 (99$) that is Universal and works natively on Intel.
In any case if you look for AGP in this forum you'll find many posts on this topic.
