Will Genius Bar install hard drive in my MacBook?
Just wondering if the Genius Bar will install a hard drive that wasn't bought from Apple. I know if I do it myself, it voids the warranty. What if they replace it? Also roughly how much would this cost?

Why do you think it will void your warranty? Apple gives instructions on doing this and this is Apples word on the warranty issue.

I work in IT for a School District and I am creating a Script that system information about the computer. I am testing this on a Mac Pro with two internal hard drives. One drive is Mac OS 10.8 and the other drive is a Boot Camp Drive that is used by VMWare Fusion.
When I run System Information via the GUI or system_profiler via Terminal, both drives show up just fine. However, if I launch VMWare Fusion and run Windows from my Boot Camp drive, then run System Information via the GUI or system_profiler via Terminal, the Boot Camp Drive is no longer listed as an installed drive.
Example:
In the Terminal, I enter the following command.

I assume this is due to the the fact that the drive is "In Use" however is seems odd since the Mac drive is also in use and it appears without problem. I assume there is no "fix" for this, I was just wondering if someone may have an explaination why?
Also, I do realize that I can query the various interface types like system_profiler SPSerialATADataType to get all the properly installed phycial drives, but then I would have to query all possible interface types, isolate only devices containing Volumes, then consoldate the information to just the information that I need. I was hoping for a cleaner query.Thank you for your response.
VMWare may be the cause, but the actual issue I am having is with Apple's System Information. I anticipated resistance from VMWare if I went to them with a question about an Apple software issue (even though VMWare software is part of the equation). I was trying to avoid the inevitable finger pointing game. I thought I would try with Apple Forums first since the issues presents itself within the Apple Software. However, you are correct that VMWare may have an explanation on why Fusion might be interfering with System Information. I will check with them next.
To answer your question. Yes, In most cases I do use Fusion to run Windows side-by-side with the Mac OS. However, that is not always the case. There are a few reasons why I have it setup using a Dual Boot configuration.
One, in some cases, due to the intense programs I occasionally run (graphic applications), I prefer to simply boot straight into Windows via Boot Camp so I may allocate all hardware resources to Windows. Additionally, some graphic applications like to have direct access to hardware and the extra layer of the VM environment can cause problems when an application is trying to directly access specific hardware like a graphics card.
Second, I often use either side, both Mac and PC, for testing. There is an advantage to not having to rely on the Mac OS to run Windows. If, for whatever reason, my Mac becomes unstable due to testing, I can still jump right into Windows to do work if necessary.
Third, I love the Mac OS, but I work in a PC centric organization. If there is a "problem" with my system, it is too easy for other system admins to say, "it's because it's a Mac". Having the definitive separation of the OS's allows me to prove that the Mac OS is not a factor. -

Ask them. We don't know what your local Apple Store will do for you. It will certainly cost you their hourly charge for however many hours are involved. You may have to purchase Win8 from them but if not you must have a copy of your own.
Or you can take the time to read the Boot Camp documentation and do it yourself. Start here: Apple - Support - Boot Camp. Open Boot Camp Assistant then click on the large button on the left to print the documentation. Then read it very carefully. -
Apple Genius Bar Triage Hard Drive
I was recently at the apple store and noticed that one of the technicians was using an external hard drive with 10.4 triage, 10.5 triage, and 10.6 triage. Where could I get the contents of that hard drive?
Because 10.4 & 10.5 & 10.6 can't all run on the same Mac, there are a couple workarounds:
1. Use as the basis one of the pre-October 26, 2007 Intel Macs to create installations of all three on separate partitions. Mind you Intel Macs start at 10.4.4, so you'd be limited to 10.4.4 or later on the first partition.
2. Create a 10.4 Apple Partition Map, and a 10.5 and 10.6 GUID partition map partition on the same hard drive using these tips:

Either solution won't give you more than a basis for running troubleshooting applications. They won't give you a fully functional backup that can then reliably be used as a clone to your specific Mac. There may be specific drivers inherant to the specific Mac in question. Some tools, are specific to authorized service technicians alone, while others such as those by Micromat and Alsoft can be bought by end user to go on those discs. -
Will genius bar staff look at my older MacBook and recommend upgrades to improve performance?
Yeah, I probably should just call them, but it is 10 PM in Las Vegas and they are closed. My MacBook is slowing down and I read some answers on the community as to what to do. From those, it looks like I need more RAM and a larger hard drive. Also, maybe some backup to storage. I don't know if this is possible on my MacBook, so I have to find out and think the Genius Bar personnel would help. Do they do this stuff?

Currently have 30K pics on PC Win. 7 laptop using PSE 8, corrected issues and did full backup on portable hard drive plus saved (Extensive) Keyword tags to file. Installed PSE 13 on PC Win 8.1 laptop. Will attach same portable Hard drive to new laptop. How do I import prev Keyword Tags from file and Restore catalog from port. HD to new PC and in what order? I have not opened PSE 13 on new PC yet. Would like to do it right the first time!

Installing a better Hard Drive in my MacBook Pro
Hey guys,
I'm looking to install a better hard drive into my MacBook Pro (15.4" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz) that I bought last September, and I'm strictly a software guy: I know little to nothing about hardware.
I'm hoping to upgrade from a 120 GB to a 320 and hopefully from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. Is there any other specifications I need to follow, other than it needs to be a notebook hard drive and it needs to be SATA?

- KeithYeah I'm more of a speed freak, I admit it. 7200 RPM sounds good even sacrificing the size, because I already have an external and intend to get a huge desktop in the next few years. Also, my laptop is much more powerful than any of my computers could ever be upgraded to be.
Also, I talked to my brother who says compared to my 5400 rpm hard drive, a 7200 rpm hard drive will run *significantly hotter* and get *significantly less battery life* (~30 minutes depending). Has anyone here upgraded a 5400 rpm notebook hard drive to a 7200 rpm hard drive before? Can you say anything about these claims?

Installing 10.6 on a new hard drive in 13" MacBook
Last night, I dropped my (13", 2007) Macbook and damaged the hard drive beyond repair. I have no bootable back-up. I had upgraded this Macbook to 10.6 a few months ago, using the Snow Leopard Family Pack.
So now I am about to install a new hard drive in the MacBook (it's coming tomorrow.) What I am wondering is whether I will actually be able to install 10.6 on this new drive, using the Family Pack DVD. When I installed it on the Macbook earlier, I believe I did an erase and install, but I thought it required having 10.5 installed on the computer.
Any insights or advice would be welcome (other than "keep a bootable back-up" hahaha!)You can install OS X on the new drive but first you have to prep the new drive:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Once formatting is completed you can quit DU and install OS X. -
I got new hard driver for my MacBook I don't have the cd but I do have flash drive that has the software I need help because when I turn on my laptop it shows me a file with question mark how can I install the software from the flash driver?
Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
Any suggestions?

Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
Some thoughts:
• The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
• The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
• If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.

I have a macbook and I'm having trouble backing up my pictures on an external hard drive. The Macbook won't install the backup drive soft ware? It is a new Sea Gate hard rive from costco.
You don't want to install the software that came with the drive, you don't need it and it will be problematic. Connect the new drive, open Disk Utility, select the new drive and partition it using the GUID partition scheme, then format it as Mac OS extended journaled and it will be easy to use with your Mac.

I backed up my entire hard-drive of my macbook pro - just prior to installing osx mountain lion.
I put everything into a folder on my desktop - then backed it up onto an external drive. Once this was done - i deleted the folder off my desktop - and following this - things started to go all weird...pages hanging, the coloured 'wheel of death' appeared for ages. So i had to employ a 'hard-boot' restart - as i had not other options.
I'm pretty sure i made copies of of files/apps/folders etc - however not so sure now as i cant even start up my laptop!!!
Can somebosy please help me urgently??!!!Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!

I just had to put a new hard drive in my Macbook. How do I "backload" my Ipod tunes back into Itunes on the new hard drive I had installed?
Somebody told me that as soon as I connect the Ipod to the computer, Itunes will will wipe it clean and install what is in the Itunes library (which is nothing) and that I would need some sort of software to accomplish this. Does it matter that the tunes on the Ipod were all uploaded from cd's and not purchased?

Is it possible to remove my hard drive from the Macbook and install it in a new Macbook Pro?
I currently have a 2009 Macbook and am wanting to upgrade to a new Macbook Pro. I have upgraded my hard drive in the macbook to a 500gb and have a duel boot with Windows 7 installed with Boot Camp along with other software that I do not want to lose. Is it possible to remove my hard drive from the Macbook and install it in a new Macbook Pro?
A much better solution is to hook your two Mac together and the first time you start the new Mac and it asks if you wish to recover data from another Mac, answer yes. This will invoke Setup Assitant which will do the job for you but intelligently.
I know because I just used Setup Assitant. It worked like a charm.

If you would like you can your boot your computer into recovery mode using Command+R There you can select re-download it from the internet. You will not have any of your old data on your new computer, but that is because you replaced your hard drive. So if you would like your old data to be there on your new computer I would recommend to back up your old hard drive to Time machine then Boot it into recovery using Command+R and click on restore with Time machine. Once that has completed successfully you not only should have 10.6 But you will also have all of your data from your old computer.
