Will I be able to import 1080/60P from my Panasonic TM900K directly into FCPX?

I understand that there are limitations with the codec in importing 1080/60P video in native format, directly from my camera.  I've seen comments that this may be remedied through Final Cut Pro X, but have yet to see any definitive response.  Can anyone confirm that FCPX will handle direct import of full resolution video without converting or reducing to 1080i or less?

Anyone who knows cannot say, or risk spending the rest of their life in court.

I can no longer import raw files from my Panasonic Lumix LX5 into Aperture 3.3.2 - raw files from my other Canon cameras are fine. Am still running Lion (10.7.4) - NOT Mountain Lion. Tried all available software updates - all up to date apparently but still no joy. OS X Lion shows the LX5 as a supported file format. I dont want to have to upgrade to Mountain Lion just to see if this solves the problem. Any ideas please.

Since when did this happen? Directly after you upgraded to Aperture 3.3.2?
If it happened directly after the upgrade the problem may be, that the raw support for your camera got lost. For some posters it helped to register the raw support again, see this post by Alan Roseman:
Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish
If this does not help, you may need to reinstall Lion to bring back the raw support.
But if the problem occured independent of a new installation, ypu may have a problem with your camera or the card you are using. Have you tried to use a different card or to reformat the card in the camera?

  • How do I 'Log and Transfer' 1080/ 60P from my Panasonic TM700 camera?

"How do I 'Log & Transfer' my 1080/ 60 Progressive format from my Panasonic TM 700 HD camera?

If you have FCP X 10.0.5 you do it the normal way.
However, if you also have normal AVCHD on the same card you probably won't be able to do it easily.
    1080/60p should be shot separately.

  • Import 1080 60p AVCHD to iMovie!

The latest iMovie`11 (version 9.0.4) will not import 1080 60p AVCHD 2 videos directly from my Sony NEX-5N camera. The easy workaround is to copy the video files to the hard drive (best done with BootCamp Sony Picture Motion Browser) and then rewrap the 1080 60p (.mts and .m2ts) videos into QuickTime (.mov) movies, using either ClipWrap or Media Converter. Rewrapping AVCHD 2 video also avoids the time-consuming transcoding into Apple Intermediate Codec, which can quadruple the video file size and cause slight IQ loss.
I did some tests, trying to decide between ClipWrap and Media Converter with AVCHD Plugin:
    - iMovie`11 will import, display, and render ClipWrap and Media Converter rewrapped videos without problem.
    - During importing, iMovie`11 will transcode ClipWrap videos even if the "Optimize video" is unchecked unless a Hidden Function is activated in the Terminal, on the other hand, iMovie won't transcode Media Converter files if the "Optimize video" is unchecked.
    - ClipWrap and Media Converter rewrapped videos appear pretty much identical to the source; HOWEVER...
    - Export using QuickTime to Apple Intermediate Codec: ClipWrap file produces a more contrasty image with shadow areas appear less blotchy than Media Converter.
    - Export using QT to H.264: ClipWrap file also produces a more contrasty image with shadow areas appear noticeably less blotchy than Media Converter.
Somehow ClipWrap rewrapping method makes a noticeable difference in the export qualities so I'll be using ClipWrap instead of the Media Converter!
To export edited 1080 60p videos from iMovie, go to "Share / Export using QuickTime... / Options / Video" and make sure "Size / Dimensions" is set to 1920X1080 and "Settings / Frame Rate" is set to 59.94. Despite the fact that iMovie`11 "File / Project Properties..." show "30fps - NTSC", 1080 60p video can be exported and will play smoothly on Macs fast enough to handle the format.
Here are some samples showing the differences in export image qualities.

    Hi jonpais,
The best codec is Apple ProRes for FCP. Due to the difference in the compresstion standard of AVCHD and ProRes 422, the converted files are significantly larger than the original ones. If you prefer smaller file size, please choose “Apple ProRes 422 (LT) (*.mov)” instead.
    ProRes 422 (HQ): offers the utmost possible quality for 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 sources and provides target data rate of approximately 220 Mbps and higher quality than Apple ProRes 422;
    ProRes 422: provides target data rate of approximately 145 Mbps and higher quality than Apple ProRes 422 (LT);
    ProRes 422 (LT): provides roughly 70 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (thus, smaller file sizes than Apple ProRes 422) and higher quality than ProRes 422 (Proxy);
    ProRes 422 (Proxy): provides roughly 30 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 and high-quality offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio;
ProRes 4444: offers the utmost possible quality for 4:4:4 sources and roughly 50 percent higher than the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).
If you want to know more, there is a prores link, maybehelp you: http://mts-to-aic-converter.com/transcode-sony-cx360v-1080-50p-60p-mts-to-prores -422-hq-for-final-cut-pro-on-mac/

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

Yes, as long as you save them in .doc format.

  • Import 1080/50p from Panasonic TM900

I saw, that there have already been some discussions about importing 50p footage with FCP X in this forum.
In particluar I found one thread
    No 1080/50P support.. WHY?!
where I understood, that import should work from a Panasonic camera, at least when there in only 50p movies stored on the card.
    Though:
I am still not able to import the 1080/50p from my Panasonic TM900. When I plug the camera to my MAC, open the import window in FCP and go to CAM_MEM (the internal memory of the TM900), it shows some files in the file list. In particular one file named AVCHD (which, according to the size seems to be the file where the 50p footage is stored). But all these files are displayed in grey and can't be imported by FCP (I use latest release 10.0.7).
Does anyone have same experiences or (even better) a solution ?
Seems strange to me that it works with some Panasonic 50p footage (according to thread mentioned above) but not with my TM900.

Thanks a lot, Tom, Alchroma and AppleMan for the quick answers.
At the end, all your responses plus some further testing gave the solution:
The problem was, that I used the built-in memory of the TM900 camera rather than an SD card.
I now tested with an SD card and situation is as follows:
    - 50p footage on the camera built-in memory is NOT recognized by FCP X - the import window shows the folder
      structure instead of clips
    - 50p footage on SD card & Camera with SD card plugged into MAC via USB:
again the 50p clips are NOT shown in the import window
But finally there is a solution:
    - 50p footage on SD card and SD card directly plugged into card slot of the MAC:
in this case ALL clips (50p as well as AVCHD 25i) are shown in the import window as expected and can be
      imported without any problem
Again, thanks a lot, your answers somehow guided me to the solution ;-)
One more point, where probably one of you can help me:
It seems that with the 50p footage I now definitely have to use optimized or proxy media (which I never did before), as my MAC is not able to play the 50p clips in the preview without lost frames.
As I'm a bit struggeling with disk space, I would prefer to use proxy media rather than optimized, but of course I don't want to have any quality loss in my final movie.
Did I get the following right ?
If I switch back to "use optimized or original media" just before exporting my movie, FCP will use the original media for the export, even if all the cutting workflow was done with the proxy files ?
Or will the us of proxy media in any way influence my final movie.
Happy to receive any confirmation on that topic and/or probably a recommendation, what is best workflow to deal with the 50p footage that brings my MAC to its limits.

  • If I reinstall my FCE 3.5 from the original discs, will I be able to get the updates from Apple?

System has begun crashing (dropping-windowshade, message to shut down computer) during attempted capture or render.  Hardware has been checked out and is OK.  Other OS functions seem to be working.  I have a bootable clone from the most recent period of good function, and also my original install disc for FCE.
If I need to try reinstalling FCE, are the updates still available from Apple?
If I can't restore FCE 3.5, is there anything I can use with my OS 4.11 MBP that will be able to access my FCE 3.5 project files?  My 3+TB of underwater clips, stored on external drives as QT movies?
Any guidance appreciated.  This forum helped me out a lot when I first started - didn't expect the end to come so soon & hope there's a feasible workaround!
    Thanks,
    Sharron S.

If I reinstall my FCE 3.5 from the original discs, will I be able to get the updates from Apple?
    Yes, via Software Update
Here is an article on how to Uninstall FCE HD  You could also use  FCS Remover (note there are different versions depending on what version of OS X you have - be sure to select the correct version)
If I can't restore FCE 3.5, is there anything I can use with my OS 4.11 MBP that will be able to access my FCE 3.5 project files?
    - FCE project files - only usable with FCE or FCP.  Not iMovie or FCP-X
    - All your clips, however, can be used with almost anything including iMovie, FCP, FCP-X, QuickTime, etc.

  • My new iMac is not shipping with Lion installed. Will I be able to do a Migration from my PC to my iMac without installing Lion first?

My new iMac is not shipping with Lion installed. Will I be able to do a Migration from my PC to my new iMac? I only want to transfer photos and my music, currently on my PC (and on my iPod Touch & iPad).
Can anyone give me a list of steps to follow or let me know if Migration Assistant is available prior to Lion for PC to Mac?
Thank you so so so much!
    -SweetDee

    SweetDee,
I'd be VERY surprised if your machine was not shipping with Lion installed. However even if it doesn't when you initally install Lion it will launch into Setup Assistant, if you follow the prompts it will ask if you are migrating from another machine. You can use Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips for help, look for the section(s) on MS Windows migration. Also I would strongly recommend bookmarking and studying the following sites:

In closing remember you have 90 days of free telephone support with AppleCare. If you run into trouble they will be happy to assist or if you have an Apple Store in your area you can book an appointment with a Genius and they can usually help you out.

  • Will I be able to open a library from version 1.5.6 with Aperture 3.1.2?

I have two computers, one running Aperture version 1.5.6 and another running Aperture 3.1.2.  Question is will I be able to open my library from version 1.5.6 with version 3.1.2.  The computer that is running the early version is dying on me.
    Thanks.

When you access the old library with 3 it will upgrade the library before opening it. Make sure you have a backup of the library before accessing it with 3 just in case.
Also be aware once the library is updated it will no longer be accessible from Aperture 1.5.6 and there is no way to reverse the upgrade.

  • When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

Just got a Nikon D5200. Photoshop and Bridge cannot read NEF files from this camera. It worked fine with my D3100 camera. When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

    Welcome to the forum!
As often, we cannot give a simple answer without more informations: what version of Photoshop and Bridge are you talking about?
The rule of thumb is to update Camera Raw to the latests version compatible with Photoshop, and if it does not work, to download the last version of the DNG converter and use it on the files to convert them to DNG that can be opened in the older versions of Camera Raw and other raw converters.
Normally, to update go to Help>Updates...
According to http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.htmlhe first version of Camera Raw that can open the NEF from the 5200 is Camera Raw 7.3, that works with Photoshop CS6. If you version of Photoshop is older, you'll need to use the DNG converter 7.4:
(but, since you don't state what operating system you are using, here are the links for both versions:

50p will not work directly with FCE.
    50i is fine.
The topic has been discussed on this forum if you would like to try a search.
