Will I be able to upgrade?

I live in an area with an exchange that has been upgraded to Infinity and an FTTC cabinet has recently appeared by the junction box in the village.  Openreach shows our exchange as accepting Infinity orders.
As we currently have appallingly slow (128kB) broadband we are very much hoping to upgrade to infinity, but the infinity checker site gives a standard message that it isn't expected to make the service available to our number/postcode within the next 6 months.
When I investigate this message on the FAQs there are a number of reasons given why it may not be available yet.  Although we are 2.6 miles from our exchange, we are within 0.3 miles of the street cabinet.
What I'd really like to do is talk to someone at BT who can advise me whether we will eventually be able to connect or whether we are excluded, however I can't find a number.  Can anyone suggest the best way to contact BT and speak to someone who could give useful and honest advice?
I've read in various places in the forum that Infinity won't be made available if your current broadband speed is <5MB.  Is this true or have I misunderstood?  It seems sad, that the people who most need a speed upgrade are unlikely ever to get it.
What do you think our chances of getting faster broadband via terrestrial means are?  What alternatives do we have?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Do as suggested by seab20 if fibre is coming in the next few months you will see a predicted speed.
What you may have heard is the minimum speed that BT Openreach will currently supply a fibre product which is 5 Mb/sec. There is a marketing rule BT Retail apply that they will not accept an order for Infinity if the predicted speed is less than 15Mb/sec but above 5 Mb/sec they will accept an order for something called "BT Total Broadband Option 3 with Fibre". It is likely that the minmum limit will change over time especially given the government's commitment to deliver minmum 2 Mb/sec to anyone.

  • I need to upgrade Snow Leopard to get icloud before my mobileme expires at the end of June.  If I buy Lion, will I be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion free when it comes out?  When is MLion going to be released in UK?

I am running Snow Leopard and have a Mobile Me account.  My Mobile Me account expires at the end of June.  I have been told that I will need to buy the Lion upgrade to run icloud on my imac, but I am aware that Lion is due to be replaced by Mountain Lion this summer.  I don't want to have to buy two up grades!  Will Mountain Lion be released before my mobile me account expires?  If not and I buy the Lion upgrade, will I be able to upgrade it to Mountain Lion, free, in view of the fact that I will only have had Lion for a very short time and could not avoid this purchase??????

    HI...
We have no way of knowing exactly when Mountain Lion will be released. Most likely, if you upgrade to Lion now you'll be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but the actual minimum requirements are unknown at this time.
Lion is only $29.99 plus any applicable taxes and fees and available from the App Store, or you can purchase the thumb drive > OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

I just ordered a macbook mc207ll/a  online that is running Sow leopard, will I be able to upgrade to yosemite?

Just make sure you update it to 10.6.8 (the last version of Snow Leopard) once you get it if it isn't running it already. Just go to the  menu and then Software Update. This will give you access to the App Store which is needed to download Yosemite.

  • Bought a new HDD, but did not come up with OSX Lion. Will I be able to upgrade it for free?

So my HDD in my iMac had a failure, and so I brought it to Apple's Repair Center.
The technician suggested me to buy a new HDD, and so I did.
However it does not come up in OSX Lion.
Will I be able to upgrade it for free?
There's an online upgrade in the apple website, but when I submit the request, it did not recognize the serial number.

    Sorry, no.
Customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac Computeror an Apple Certified Refurbished computer from the Apple Online Store on or after July 21, 2011 that does not include OS X Lion can upgrade to OS X Lion for free.

Yes, you can upgrade to the current OS X -- Mavericks!
    Here is how:

  • If I currently purchase OS X Snow Leopard will I be able to upgrade to OS X Lion for free?

I am currently updating my software from Leopard to Snow Leopard, since Lion is coming out in less than a month or so will I be able to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion for free. I saw somewhere on apple.com if I purchase a new mac that you are eligable for a free upgrade, but is it the same if I purchase just the software brand new?

    No. See the announcement:
    Lion Up-To-Date upgrade
"The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request." See below:
OS X Lion - Get up to date
It does not say you get it for free if you buy Snow Leopard. You have to purchase a new Mac computer.

  • Will I be able to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks?

First, I know my machine will handle Mavericks, that's not my question.  What I want to know is:
If I have Lion now, will I be able to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks for the Mavericks price quoted, or will I have to upgrade to Mt. Lion and then Mavericks?  I was going to upgrade to Mt. Lion right about now, but don't want to pay for two upgrades within 3 or 4 months if I don't have to.

If everything goes like in Mountain Lion, you should be able to upgrade to Mavericks from any OS X version with the App Store: Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion, always that your MacBook Pro is supported, thing that we don't know yet until Apple releases the requirements. Note that this may change with the final version

  • Will I be able to upgrade ever again without being forced onto a Share Everything plan?

I just got off the phone with customer service and I'm seriously hoping they were wrong about the upcoming changes. I currently have a family plan with 4 smartphones, and have determined that the new plans will increase my bill by about $50 a month, for less data. I am not interested in the new plans at all, and feel they are a huge insult to all but a small portion of the customer base (but I digress, that's not my question).
Anyway, after trying to convince me that I'd be getting a better deal by increasing my monthly bill by $50 (seriously) they told me that ANY upgrade performed after 6/28 would force my entire account (all 4 lines) onto the new plan. This is not a question of unlimited data vs capped data. My question is: will we be able to upgrade lines and at least keep the 2GB $30 plan in the future? If anyone can provide any details on this question I would greatly appreciate it.

I have an unlimited data plan on my account. Do I need to change it?
You're not required to move to Share Everything but if you do, unlimited data will not be retained on your line. As a Verizon Wireless customer you have choices when you upgrade at discounted pricing. You can choose from a standalone data package starting at $30 for 2GB or a Share Everything Plan. If keeping unlimited is important to you, you can choose to upgrade and pay full retail price for the phone.

  • Will I be able to upgrade my standard Destiny edition to the limited edition?

Will I be able to upgrade my current pre-order of the standard Destiny game to the limited edition? If so, how will I be able to do this? And when will the limited edition be available as other retailers have had it available since 07/07/2014? Thank you

    Hi korenchkin,
Thanks for pre-ordering Destiny at Best Buy! It’s no surprise that with the recent announcement of the Limited Edition versions, there’d be questions around upgrading your current pre-order from the standard edition.
If you’re wanting to pre-order one of the Limited Editions of Destiny,  your current pre-order would need to be cancelled as we don’t have the ability to upgrade your current pre-order. The way in which you would cancel your current pre-order depends on where it was purchased. If you made the purchase in-store, you’d want to bring your original receipt back into the store and speak with customer service. If you placed the pre-order on BestBuy.com, you’ll want to start by logging in to your account and locating your current order. Once you’ve located and opened the order, you should see a box next to the item that says “Cancel Item.” Check that box and then click the “Cancel Selected Item” button a bit lower on the page.
Once completed, please keep an eye on our main thread for Destiny, as we’ll be updating it the moment we receive more information around the availability of the Limited Editions.
Thanks for posting, and please let us know if you have any other question!

  • If I buy FCPX 10.0.5 will I be able to upgrade to 10.0.6 for free when it comes out?

If I buy FCPX 10.0.5 will I be able to upgrade to 10.0.6 for free when it comes out? I know 10.0.6 comes out sometime this month or soon....

I guess you already know the answer to this but yes, you can upgrade for free!!! But there are some issues with 10.0.6 you need to be aware of. Read the associated issues before you upgrade. It may not affect you if you don't already have a bunch of rendered projects though. Good luck!
