Will i get viruses running windows xp?

if i have a mac mini with an intel chip and running windows xp, will i need to get anti virus etc...
also my friend has got a intel imac and he is now starting to get various popups etc, is this down to having an intel chip?
are mac now going to go down the microsoft windows route to get more money by inventing bugs just to get people to buy anti virus?
i hope not as this is one of the great things about a mac.

If you use XP on your mac, you need to use a virus checker. I use the AVG free virus checker and it works pretty good on my PCs. Also, install a few good anti-spyware programs like spyware blaster, spybot s&d, and microsoft defender. The real problem is that even with that protection, some people will get spyware and viruses up the wazoo because of the behavior they have on the internet. If you like to visit seedy sites and download/run seedy files, you're gonna comprimise your XP.
However if you are a aware of what to look for, you could probably run an XP machine with no Virus/Spyware apps and be fine. My windows machines never get comprimised, and my friends machine needs to be clean-installed every couple months because he does all this poker stuff and myspace stuff and refuses to use firefox instad of IE.

If I create a partition for Bootcamp that is at least 30 GB in size, is that all the storage I get when running Windows?

There are differences between each Mac and what the original configuration of the Mac is/was. If your Mac originally came with an Optical drive, burning the ISO to a DVD and using it will work. Hardware modifications like Optibay will cause problems. Modifying Bootcamp info.plist will cause problems. Disk Utility partitioning will cause problems. A custom Hybrid MBR will cause problems. External Optical drives are unlikely to work. There is long litany of grief.

  • Iphone will not sync computer running windows XP cannot save backup

I have Iphone 4 running version 4.3.5 when I try to syn with iTuneson my computer running Windows XP I get the message "canot save Backup"  any thoughts how to resolve?

Trying it again worked. The only difference between this time and the last time was that this time I let the sync process do its backup. So, for anyone else, before trying drastic steps to fix the issue, I'd suggest just updating to the latest iOS (I did it via USB, it probably doesn't matter though) and letting the sync process do ALL of its thing.

  • When will VZW get a 4G Windows Phone?

I'm just about ready to upgrade my phone. I'm tired of Droid and the bad performance; I don't want anything from Apple. I want to try Windows Phone 7/8 but my next phone must be 4G. Does VZW have plans on getting a 4G Windows Phone? If so, when?

Considering how slow VZW is getting phones out.... even if Microsoft releases the code and a OEM gets a phone built by this fall, it'll probably be at least 6 - 9 months after that before VZW allows it on their network.  My guess we're about 18 months away from VZW allowing us to get a 4G/Windows Phone.  (And that will probably only be another low end phone.... )

  • Running Windows on MacBook Air

    Hi
I am considering buying a MacBook Air 11 inch 128gb.  However from time to time I will need to use Windows apps particularly Microsoft Access and I just wanted to check whether I will have any problems running Windows on this spec of MacBook Air?
    Many thanks
    Ken

I have exactly the setup you are thiking of getting, a mid year2011 11" i5 with 4GB ram and a 128GB SSD.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using VirtualBox which is free, no need to Bootcamp.
I created a 30GB file for it. After initial install it had only used about 9-10GB.
At the moment with SQL Server Express and MATLAB installed, plus a few other things like Chrome browser for my windows coding, the file has grown to 17GB, and im having no problems.
In fact i tried installing SQL Server Express on a Vista 64 machine that was lying around, denied! it didnt work, but under the VM all is working well. how cool is that.
The great thing about using VirtualBox is that your windows machine is just basically one big file on your Mac disk, no fancy cumbersome dual installs needed, plus i didnt want windows polluting my Mac too much.
This is my first Mac and i cant say enough good things about it.
As for optical drive, im using a Samsung SE-S084 and it works no problems, its what i used to install Windows into the VM.
    Good luck.
ps: one more little thing, when running Windows using VirtualBox, im allocating 3GB to Windows and 1GB to Mac and im having no problems.
basically i might have Chromium running in Mac, finder, preview and its all fine. I like to allocate a little bit more to Windows as i know a few of the coding tools can be a little hungry.

  • Running Windows On MacBook

I just recently purchased a MacBook but will be needing to run Windows and Internet Explorer, how do I do this and do I need to download something?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not yet fully developed for the Mac - some features are not yet implemented - but it does work otherwise.
    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Running windows on a Powerbook

I have just bought a Powerbook Intel Duo with IMB RAM. Can i install Windows XP on this machine without Vitul PC or Parallels. I have been told it is now capable as a dual boot machine.
    Please can anyone clarify. Thanks.

I assume that you have a copy of Windows to install. If so, then you might as well try Boot Camp. Yes, it is beta, but it is free and you will get the benefit of full native speeds. Not that Money is CPU intensive, but you will get the full performance anyway.
Parallels is an emulator, and as such will be slower than running Windows with Boot Camp. The difference between Parallels and VPC is that VPC had to emulate an entirely different system architecture, while Parallels just needs to create a virtual machine that runs on the same x86 architecture. That requires a lot less system resources.
You can download a demo of Parallels HERE. If you like the ability to fire up Windows in a window and do yor banking without a reboot (and if you think that is worth $80) then use it. If not, the free option is Boot Camp.
You will need a copy of Windows anyway for either one. In fact, you can legally use the same copy of Windows for each and have both in use on your Mac. One big advantage of Parallels is that you can use almost any x86-based OS and not be limited to just Windows XP SP2.

  • How Do I Run Windows from an External Drive?

Recently my PC with Windows XP crashed- it's old and the motherboard went. I had a full version of Windows XP on there, and I would like to know what I need to do in order to run Windows off of that hard drive (I've taken it out and have it in an enclosure). Ideally, I would like to be able to plug in this external drive, and start a program that will allow me to run Windows off of this drive.
I have downloaded a trial of Parallels Desktop, which seems like it will work, but it needs me to install a transporter on the Windows drive before it can migrate the drive. The problem is, I can't access my drive anymore since my PC is no longer broken.

Then I guess my question is how do I go about transferring my PC data to the external drive without a PC*.
    In Parallels, I try this:
Migrate Windows from a PC > External Storage Device > then it says "please install Parallels Transporter Agent on your PC
Since my PC no longer works, I need to find a way to transport the data. As of now, I plug in my Windows drive to my Mac, and it doesn't even show up. I would be OK with running Windows on my Mac via a VM, although it looks like I would need to buy Windows again since it's an OEM copy...
*I found a site where it says it can be done, but I am just having trouble with the transporter program.

  • External hard drive to run windows?

I have recently gotten a macbook pro and, as a student, I will occasionally need to run windows applications such as office etc.. I have considered buying an external USB HD to do this with.
    Questions:
    1. Will an external hard drive work to run windows and associated apps without putting any microsoft products on my Mac? If so, what size will I need?
    2. Is there a better way to accomplish this?

    Basically, no.

Check for Mac versions of those applications. If there aren't any, try CrossOver Mac or WineBottler.

  • Looking to run Windows on a MAC

I am looking to the best virtualizer program that will allow me to run Windows on my MAC Pro.  Unfortunately, Quickbooks for MAC is a subpar version of the program that is offered for PCs.  By no means do I want to abandon my MAC... except when working on the program quickbooks.  I am looking for a seemless way to switch back and forth between MAC and Windows.

Look at the alternatives laid out in this article:

I have tried to uninstall all Abode Acrobat installations but one file remains and refuses to be uninstalled. It gives me this error : Error applying Transforms . Verify that specified paths are valid. It was installed on Sept 18 2014.  I have downloaded a Transform update but it tells I do not have a Adobe Acrobat product installed.

    Hi all,
Sylonious, did you manage to sort this problem out? I have been experiencing similar problems. I think my problem was because I had many different versions of JDKs. I have done a complete re-install. I would be really grateful to you (and anyone else) for help with this problem.
I have re-installed JSDK1.4.2_03, set the "path" variable to "C:\JSDK1.4.2_03".
When I compile using "javac" I get an error saying "javac" is not recognised.
When I compile using "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\bin\javac Freq.java" no error is thrown.
Every time I try to run a java file, I always get the NoClassDefFound error. When run with the -verbose option, files are loaded from C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin - is this correct?
I have removed all previous references to java in the registry editor.
    Please help !
    Regards,
    Vipul

  • My desktop pc runs windows xp which is shortly to be discontinued. my laptop is macpro retina can i get a virus to my mac vis my desktop?

i have a desktop pc running windows xp, shortly i will be losing any future updates including security protection. i am going to purchase a mac pro retina. can my laptop get infected if connected wirelessly to my desktop?

Make sure your router is also up to date. The number of people with out of date routers and firmware isn't as bad as XP users hanging on but does pose problems.
It does not cost much to put together a current Haswell motherboard + cpu + new RAM + SSD for the system (and copy of Windows 8.1+) to be up and running and current - and supported.
Even so, you should be using some 3rd party security product already.
