Will I loose all my files and photos when I upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow leopard

I have purchased Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the Mac store and I am ready to install it. Will I loose all my files and photos when I install it ?  I am upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 Snow leopard.

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.

There's only one thing you can do: make an appointment with Apple genius at the Apple retail store for a out of warranty replacement.

  • If i sync my iPhone with another iTunes will i loose all my apps and photos?

If i sync my iPhone with another iTunes will i loose all my apps and photos?

All iTunes content on your iPhone will be removed first.
Unless you transfer photos from another computer when doing so, the photos transferred from the other computer will not be touched.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are not part of and not touched with the iTunes sync process.

  • When I upgrade from OS10.5.8 to Snow Leopard will all my data transfer.  If I need to back up what is the best way to do this?

I plan to upgrade from OS10.5.8 to Snow Leopard. Will all my data, applications and settings transfer automatically?
If I need to back up what is the best way to do this?

If everything works perfectly, your data should not be touched.
Personally I never trust my data to everything working perfectly.
I always backup everything twice at least.

  • I tried to download latest iphone 3gs and now request I restore will I loose all my contacts and photos, I tried to download latest iphone 3gs and now request I restore will I loose all my contacts and photos

I have downloaded the latest version of itunes and iphone this evening it now states that I have to restore will I have lost all my contact pics etc??? I have 3GS

All of your contacts and pics should be on your computer.
    Are they not?
Why not?  You should be syncing/importing them regularly, particlularly before any update.

  • My husband(less technologically inclined than I am), decided to delete programs from our iMac, now it has a grey screen and won't get past it. If I insert the Application Install DVD, to repair the disk, will I loose all my pictures and music?

My husband(less technologically inclined than I am), decided to delete programs from our iMac, he turned it off and now it has a grey screen and won't get past it. It won't start in safe mode and when I  If I insert the Application Install DVD, to repair the disk, will I loose all my pictures and music?

With a corrupt disk, the install procedure is most likely going to fail.
    How old it the disk?
You might be able to reformat it to fix the problem. Of course that means you lose all of your data.
The other alternative is to get a new disk drive and put that in your Mac and install OS X
Then put the old disk drive in an enclosure and see what can be recovered from it.

  • Will i loose all my music and pictures and apps if i use a different computer

will i loose all my music and pictures and apps if i use a different computer?

In order to use a different computer than what the device was originally synced with, you would need to use a 3rd party application to back the information up, prior to syncing with iTunes.
If you try to sync on a different computer than usual, you will get a message stating that it will wipe all data out and start from scratch... and it will erase everything.

  • If i update my iphone 3 will i loose all my pictures and videos...?

If i update my iPhone 3G will i loose all my pictures and videos...?

You shouldn't, but all of this should be on your computer anyway.
You should not update/upgrade/restore/etc without making sure that everything is backed up.

  • I lost all my photos when I upgraded from Iphoto to Photos

I lost all my photos when I upgrade from Iphoto to photos, can I get back? please help

You need to provide more details about what happened.  But, here is something you can check.
When you run Photo and it converts your library, it doesn't delete the iPhoto library.  Look in your Pictures folder - you should see two libraries:
iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary (this is the original iPhoto library)
Photos Library.photoslibrary (this is the new Photos library)
You should still be able to open the original iPhoto library.  The iPhoto application was not deleted from your computer.  (It was probably removed from your Dock if you had an icon there.)  Look in the Applications folder, find iPhoto, and run it.  It should show your original library with all your original images.
It is always a good idea to back up your photos (and the iPhoto library) before trying these migrations.  Problems do occur...
    Hope this helps.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc.  It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc.  It ejects every time now.

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc.  It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc.  It ejects every time now.  I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it.  I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that.  Why won't this work?!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Every time I launch airport utility i says theres a new update to 5.6.1 so i click update and there is no update. Do i need to reset or restore my time machine? if so will I loose all my files?

the problem is that i launch the airport utility and it always says there is an update to 5.6.1, i click update and it launches the app store and tere are no updates available. i'm wondering if i need to reset or resetup my router but am afraisd if i do that i will loose all the files on my hard drive. I think this also may be related to why i am unable to use the remote app on my ipad or iphone for my apple tv (2nd gen) any input would be bvery helpful. i am now running mountain lion for my OSX

You must have upgraded to ML.. 5.6 airport utility is not actually ML compatible.. it will work but cannot be loaded as Apple ceased support at Lion. Hence why there are no upgrades.. you should not be using it at all. You are supposed to use toyland v6.1 included in ML.
I would certainly just ignore it.. having 5.6 is a great advantage .. it is a tool.. ML version is a toy.

  • If I upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard will I lose my iphotos and itunes and files?

Extremely new here guys.  Like...I need spoken to as though I am 10.  (even though the 10 year olds in my life are much smarter on computers)
    Quick version:
    Ex had control of computer.
Think I solved problem but not so sure so I was advised to upgrade OS.
    Q:
    1. Will I still be able to log in under my user account(s) or do I have to create a new one?
    2.  Will I lose my files?  ( I THINK I did a back up on an external drive )
    3.  I'm pretty sure I will have a new itunes app and iphoto app.  Will I lose my old itunes music?  Old photos?
I will probably have a lot more questions.
    Please be kind

You do not need Time Machine but it is easy to use. Time Machine is integrated in OS X. You already have it and you don't have to purchase any additional software to use it.
The Western Digital My Book for Mac is an external hard disk drive. If you backed up your existing system using "clone" software then you have a backup. If you just dragged music files and photos to it that's a good idea, but that alone does not convey the ability to change your mind and easily revert to Leopard should you want to do that for whatever reason (you probably won't).
The My Book will work with Time Machine also. If you want to use "clone" software I recommend either of the following choices:
    Carbon Copy Cloner ($39.95)
    SuperDuper! ($27.95)
They are both far more customizable than Time Machine, but a new user may find the options confusing. On the other hand Time Machine has a user interface that consists primarily of this
... which tends to be difficult to misinterpret.
Each backup strategy has advantages and disadvantages. I use Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine. Their designs are completely different so using both conveys a high degree of redundancy.
