Will i lose apps when I install mountain lion?

I'm concerned that I will lose vital applications such as QuickBooks for Mac if I upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I know that in the past non-compliant software simply didn't have access to all features.  With Lion, however, I lost non-compliant applications all together.  I want to make sure I will not experience a similar problem now (and, please, do not scold me for buying intuit.  I already know they take forever to impliment changes on the Mac).

Apps that did run succesfully in Lion will usually continue to do so. The problem with Lion was the absence of rosetta for old ppc apps such as Microsoft Office 2004 or some games .
Because MountainLion is the refined Lion so to speak and the Lion users already are aware of the ppc problem, everything should run smooth as butter.
The only thing new to OSX 10.8 is Gatekeeper that could hinder a succesful installation or execution (because it tries to block every not signed app/installer ) , for me GK is a doubtful feature, which I have set to disabled after it first asked me - "allow from any source" is then the same as it was in Lion and before, you can install every Intel app that is intended for Lion .
But -if you plan to use Gatekeeper - : you can also bypass Gatekeeper via right-clicking an installer one time and leave it enabled for all the other apps.
Nobody can do the testing for you of course. You might want to install OSX 10.8 to a external drive to evaluate the apps you are worrying about. Then if you are succesful you could re-run the installer to update the main drive also  .

  • I lost my address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have not been able to recover it.  WHen I type in a name in an email the address shows up, so I know it is in there.  How can I restore my address book?

I don't know how to do this.  I typed the question in the bar above, but apparently need to type it again here.  I lost my entire address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have been unable to recover it.  I know the information is in there as when I type in someone's name in an email the address always shows up right away.  How can I find the information for my contacts and restore my address book? Do I need to go to the Apple Store that is 2 hours away and have an expert help me or can I find out how to do it online for free myself?

The auto-complete in Mail addresses comes from two sources: (1) The "Previous Recipients" list, which can be viewed via Mail > Window > Previous Recipients. (2) Your Address Book (now called "Contacts").
If you did in fact lose your Address Book - are you sure you don't have "Contacts" in your Applications Folder? - It sounds like you are getting addresses from source (1).  If you did in fact lose your  Address Book (now called "Contacts" !!), you will have to restore it from a backup.

  • Will it be possible to clean install Mountain Lion?

Considering it is only going to be available on the Mac App store, will it be possible to clean install Mountain Lion?
Any speculation/inside knowledge would be great!

Speculation is forbidden on this site. You did read the Terms Of Use before agreeing with them didn't you?

    1. Not unless a problem occurs.
    2. Yes. Hard drive failures can occur at any time.

  • HT4718 will i lose personal files with a mountain lion reinstall??

will i lose personal files with a mountain lion reinstall??

Not unless you go out of your way to erase the disk, first.
However, nothing is foolproof and the probability of something going wrong during the reinstall is inversely proportional to the number of backups you have.

  • I am so frustrated! It may be a coincidence, but when I installed Mountain Lion, upon syncing,  1st Gen Apple Tv went into a boot loop, and apple will do nothing to help with it.  What can I do? If not fixed, will NEVER buy qp another product from them ag

Never done this before. My Apple TV was perfect until I installed Mountain Lion. Upon syncing my Apple tv, it mysteriously rebooted, asking me language and tv type. Then the Apple comes on, flashing light, and back to language. Apple said hey no longer support it, though it is not very old. Wasted $399. I had ips 180 g almost full of movies, pics, etc. that are now gone. What can I do?  Very unhappy with Apple, now.

You can buy Microsoft Office for Mac, it includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Or you can download a free copy of LibreOffice which contains substitutes (good ones) for the Microsoft Office programs.
Do not even think of using Boot Camp unless you have a complete and current TM backup or a clone to restore if it goes wrong. You will also need to buy Windows and Microsoft Office for it. And you MUST read the directions very carefully.

  • Problems with App Store since installing Mountain Lion

I have recently installed Mountain Lion and since then have been unable to use the App Store. When I launch it comes up with an error message stating 'App Store cannot verify a secure connection with the App Store.Would you like to connect anyway?'  If you hit continue the application flashes black and white but goes no further. Has anyone else had this problem and what could be done about it.
    Regards

Yes at work and no at home but the problem occurs regardless of this

  • What will happen if I try to install Mountain Lion on a 2006 iMac?

I'm interested to know because the app store app updated some software like the iWork package and a few others and advised me to install Mountain Lion to use the new features. Will Mountain Lion install at all? Will it run on my machine at all? Will I just not be able to use some of the new features?
Can I try it out by installing on an external drive to see what happens?
    Thanks for any comments.

it will tell you that this version of osx is not compatible with your computer.  Don't waste your time.

  • Will I lose apps when I upgrade my mac

Ok, so here's my question: I am a macbook pro user which has two user accounts, mine and my wife's. I have installed app's like photoshop elements and aperture and my wife has installed ms office on her side. Our permissions allow each of us to use apps on both sides (i.e when I log in to my side I can use MS word, and she can use photoshop in her side).
I am about to buy my own macbook. On purchase I will copy the HD from my old mac onto the new one. From here on in I intend to delete my wife's profile so there is only one user account on my new machine. By doing this, will I lose access to MS word?? and when she deletes my account on her mac, will she lose access to photoshop??
    Thanks in advance

Ordinarily, any OS X upgrade should never delete anything already on the computer.  However, bad things can and do happen sometimes, for all sorts of reasons.  In the rare event that the upgrade does not go exactly as expected, a full system backup will be your only protection of your data, and your best means of recovering everything back to your previous useable state.
Personally, as far as major system update or upgrades, I recommend making a full, bootable system clone to an external drive before updating.  That way, if the update fails, you can boot from your clone and have your old system fully functional to trouble shoot from, or to simple clone back to your internal drive if you do not want to try the update again.
The shareware apps Carbon Copy Cloner (Bombich software) or SuperDuper (Shirt Pocket software) are the simplest tools to make a full, bootable clone of your current system.

  • When I installed Mountain Lion it asked the name of my computer. I was in such a hurry that I now have a typo. How can I go back and change the name of the computer?

How do I change the name of my computer?

One area that this appears is on Facebook where it lists the number of Recognized Devices. There are six devices which include iPad and iPhone. These items are grayed and you are unable to change. Also on my iphone it lists the computer name. This name is different from name of my computer. It's what I signed in as when I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade. I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining this. I have searched everywhere on my computer that I can think of and cannot locate where this is used. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • How do I remove calendar alerts on my iPhone that were added when I installed Mountain Lion

Just recently upgraded my Mac OS X to Mountain Lion.  Did notice though that all-day events in my Calendar now have alerts.  Was able to remove them from Calendar in my MacBook, but noticed that they're still there in my iPhone and iPad even after synchronizing these with my MacBook.  Any suggestions on how to remove the alerts from all the all-day events without resorting to manually removing them one by one?

re: Mountain Lion adding default alerts that you can't get off you iPhone/iPad
Found a workaround that fixed the problem for me.  All posts and other help did not work on my MacBook Pro/iPhone 4s/iPad 3....Here's what I did.  First, exported each individual calendar to a .ics file on my desktop.  Then removed all calendars.  Then went to Calendar->Preferences->Alerts and selected "None, None, None".  The check box for "use these default settings only on this computer" is checked and grayed out, so I could not change it.  Then went to System Preferences->iCloud and unchecked Calendars and Reminders, and Documents and Data.  Got the warning that it would delete data on MacBook but that's the only option, so I did it and did not seem to lose any data.  Then opened iCal and imported each .ics file from the desktop.  After that was done, I checked Calendar->Preferences->Alerts again and it had changed back to default alert at 9:00am, so I changed again to "None" .  Then I went to iPhone and iPad and in Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars, changed Calendars->Default Alert Times-> to "None, None, None". Then on iPhone and iPad went to Settings->iCloud deselected same Calendars and Reminders, and Documents and Data.  Restarted all...sync'd to iTunes, first time checking replace calendar data on iPhone and iPad (Bottom of "Info" tab)...Then sync'd again and all alerts are gone now on all devices and everything is working like it was using Snow Leopard.  Takes a few steps and a little time, but this worked great for me and no issues since.
One thing to mention is that I tried all these steps without deselecting "Documents and Data" in iCloud settings, and it didn't work.  Had to do each step in above order to get things the way they were before Mountain Lion.
