Will I lose iDVD if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks?

I am getting ready to upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, and I have a few questions on my MacBookPro.
1) Is there a way to keep iDVD when I upgrade?
2) How does Microsoft Office 2008 play with Mavericks, specifically Word and Entourage?
3)  Is there any reason NOT to upgrade?  I have already done a complete backup using Time Machine.
Lisa

Carolyn,
Thank you for the answer.  Um, I am not sure what it said  . . . However, I did do more checking on exactly which model I have.  On the chart, the Model Identifier MacBookPro5,3 was listed, but not 5,4.
This is what hardware I have:
Hardware Overview:
  Model Name: MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores: 2
  L2 Cache: 3 MB
  Memory: 4 GB
  Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
  Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
  SMC Version (system): 1.49f2
How do I tell what will and won't work well with Mavericks?  I don't know if 1) I should upgrade, and 2) what should I upgrade to, based on the information you listed in your tips.
Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Can I still upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, with Yosemite out?

    Hi there,
my girlfriend is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8 I believe) on a MacBook 2009. Now she finally wanted an upgrade to a newer OS. However, I've read in several reviews that Yosemite is not running very smoothly on some older Macs. So I thought upgrading to Mavericks might be a better deal.
    So my question is:
How can I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks? Apparently you can't do it over the AppStore, since you can now only download Yosemite. Is there another way?
    Thanks!

Nope. Mavericks is no longer available for download unless you had downloaded it in the past. If Yosemite doesn't do well on an older Mac, then neither will Mavericks. Consider rolling back to Snow Leopard.
You may try calling Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. They may be able to help you with getting Mavericks for now.

  • I upgraded from snow leopard to mavericks only to find that my backup files of all my CS3 indesign, illustrator, photoshop wo't run, how do I uninstall mavericks and get my old system back

I upgraded from snow leopard to mavericks only to find that my backup files of all my CS3 indesign, illustrator, photoshop wo't run, how do I uninstall mavericks and get my old system back.  I retired from graphics a few years back but still have old clients I do work for and maintain files for.  Would not have upgraded if I had known of the incompatability.

You did not due any due dilligence to investigate if your legacy apps would run, you should upgrade your apps. However if you feel you have to downgrade back to SL then click

  • HT6065 I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks OS X, and lost all of my "on my mac" mail boxes.  How do I restore them?

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks OS X, and lost all of my "on my mac" mail boxes.  How do I restore them?

The answer was more complicated.  I had to have an Apple Care tech help me onscreen.  Had to go to Time Machine to restore (which I had tried, but couldn't find the right files to import.  The Mail icon was barred).  They helped me find them.  It was very complicated, with many steps involved.  I never could have figured it out on my own.  Even the tech was not sure how, or if it would work. And it took about 1/2 hour for the stuff to download. But, the problem was solved eventually

  • I need rosetta and don't want iCloud on my MacPro. Why should I consider upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks?

I understand that the newest OS X is Mavericks. I have refused to upgrade from Snow Leopard because I need Rosetta for some older applications I still use. In addition, I absolutely refuse to use iCloud (or anyother cloud service that uses servers resident in the USA). Can anyone give me a good reason to upgrade to Mavericks?

Your other option is to run a virtual machine using Snow Leopard server.
    Parallels
    VirtualBox
    VM Fusion
Snow Leopard server for use with the above. Call 1-800-692-7753 and order part number MC588Z/A. Cost is $19.99 + sales tax and shipping.

If you have not previously purchased Mavericks from the Mac app store, then no. It is no longer available. Yosemite has the same system requirements as Mavericks and is a free upgrade from the app store.

  • I want to upgrade from snow leopard to Mavericks, but only Yosemite is available!!

How do I upgrade snow leopard to Mavericks on one of my older macbooks? I note that Mavericks is no longer available via the App store, only Yosemite, and I do not want the latter. My latest macbooks all have Mavericks pre-installed, and I want parity on all.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer an available, downloadable OS version.
You can choose to decide and download the free OS X 10.10 Yosemite OR pay to download either OS X 10.7 Lion  or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
OS X 10.7 Lion system requirements
    Purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
To use OS X 10.7 Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended)
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall these apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.
    Good Luck!

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks: Volume cannot be used as a start volume

    Hi there!
I'm having a triple boot Mac-Linux-Win on a 2010 iMac. Each is on a partition. From Snow Leopard, I'm trying to install OS X Mavericks via App Store. The install Mavericks button has been added to my dock after the download completed.
However, when choosing a target volume, it says that my current Mac volume may not be used as a start volume. File system is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I'm having 168 GB free space on it. Partition table is GUID.
    What's wrong?
    Cheers,
    Kalsan

You are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu  you will have access to Disk Utility.
From  here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key.  Either way, that takes a few minutes.

  • Drawbacks to upgrading from Snow Leopard to Maverick

I have a 2008 IiMac running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  I have 4 GB of Ram.  I recently bought the machine used from a friend, had it wiped and the OS reloaded by an authorized Mac store.
This is my very first Mac and I am a Plumber, not an IT guy, so please excuse my blatant ignorance.
I have no added software yet, but I would like to add Keynote and some better video and audio software than iMovie and Garageband.  I really bought teh machine for video and audio.
    My questions are:
1-Will I experience a noticable drop in performance due to the demands of Maverick?
2- What other drawbacks might there be to me upgrading to Maverick?
    Thanks for your advice.

Since it is an older machine with a (comparatively) slower processor, any video work will be slower and that has nothing to do with Snow Leopard vs. Mavericks. For video editing/rendering/burning, the fastest, bestest processor as well as lots of RAM will speed things up. I had a 2006 iMac and it did my video work ok - I just got used to walking away and not using it while it was rendering or processing. I now have a top of the line 2010 and lots more RAM - video work is much faster, but it still takes time - that is the nature of the beast so to speak.
As for SL vs. Mavericks: if you don't need the bells and whistles of the latest OS including iCloud integration, etc., Snow Leopard will be fine. 4 GB RAM are great for SL; for Mavericks, it is considered the minimum (8 - 12 or more would be better for video work). The latest iMovie version 10  appears to be less user editable and more for fast processing and cloud integration - lots of choices to send to Youtube, Facebook, etc, etc, but not enough options to export so the movie can be burned to a DVD or imported into Final Cut or iDVD. I've tried it twice and will do so again, but will stick with the older version for now.

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks failed - disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

    Hello,
I'm afraid the answer is exactly what I don't want.  But here is my situation.
I've been trying to download and install Mavericks - I was running Snow Leopard.  My system was working fine - I wanted to upgrade so that I could run a game on it - but it required Mavericks.
Finally, it looked like Mavericks was installing.  Once I restarted my computer, I got the following message:
"Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer (there's a big scary yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it below this). The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
Every time I restart, I get the same message, I can't back up my data and erase my disk like it wants me to; it won't let me. I can't get back to my normal computer. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it doesn't work - it just keeps restarting over and over again. If my computer is really this determined to not let me have Mavericks, fine, but I at least want my old computer back. As it is now, I can't do anything on it besides restart it.
If I could just get to Finder, I could save some files and just reformat it - if the hard disk can be repaired.  Even if it can't, I just need my documents.  Here is the Installer Log:

Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • Lost all Address Book info upon upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

Contacts is empty. I did a Carbon Copy Clone before upgrading so I have the abcddb file, but not sure what to do with it to get the info into Contacts. Thanks for any input.

Any ideas how to input Address Book (Snow Leopard) into Contacts (Mavericks)?

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Maverick in order to download Safari 6?

I'd like to download Safari 6 but I don't think I have enough memory (2 GB) on my MacBook with Snow Leopard to download Maverick, which apparently I need to do in order to get Safari 6. Is this correct?

You are correct that you have the minimum amount of RAM tp install Mavericks of 2 GB. Most everyone says 4 GB is a more realistic amount.
Why do you feel that you need to upgrade Safari?

  • How can I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks?

The thing is, some of my software doesn't yet work in Yosemite, and doesn't in Snow Leopard. I'm on an iMac (≈2010). I haven't downloaded Mavericks on anything else, so I don't have it in the app store, but I got a Macbook which came with Mavericks. Is it possible to do this?

No. Apple has removed Mavericks from downloading since the release of Yosemite.
