Will i lose my data if i reinstall system

My iMac is running veeeery slow. It takes forever to open any program. I already have time machine working, but I have not additionally backup my photos and other data. I'm thinking in reinstalling the operative system but I am afraid to mess up the Info.

Re-installing OSX should not affect the data on your machine, but life has twists and things can go wrong. Ensure your backup is up to date even though you will most likely not need it.

You should have your data backed up off the computer regardless because even though a OS X upgrade doesn't affect users files, something could go wrong and the only way to fix it would be to erase everything and reinstall from scratch.
And like Neil said, removing OS X itself involves erasing the entire drive or partition and that of course removes programs and files in the process as OS X manages everything.
If your having a problem, there is the #8 Reinstall Just OS X, and this doesn't really erase it, but overwrites the present copy with older one from the 10.6 disk, then you use Software Update under the Apple menu to get back to 10.6.8.
But you should grab a copy of your files off the machine first if possible, because you might be having drive issues.

One computer iTunes can support multiple Apple IDs.  One iPod can also support multiple IDs.  Don't do an "erase and sync."  Simply add your Apple ID to the computer's iTunes and to the iPod.  The only nuisance is app updating, especially if you do the updates from the computer, rather than from the iPod.

If I never synced to itunes and I restore the device. Will I lose unstored data? How can I check to see the last time my phone was backed up if I forgot the passcode to my phone?

If you can't remember your passcode, you'll need to restore your phone.  If you never synched to iTunes, all data on your phone will be erased.  No way around this.

If I update my 4th gen ipod to the iOS 5, will I lose the data on my apps?

If everthing goes as planned, your app date wil be restored to the iPod. To help guard againste a possible mishap. sync (iTunes also creates a backup) the iPod before the udate and caopy the backup file to a save location in case something happens.  The backup is located here:
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

  • Will i lose my data after re-installing my iphone ?

Last night i updated my iphone and i was unaware that its not a Factory Unlock cellphone. Now my iphone got locked. Will i lose my data if i re-install ios or can i restore my data after re-installing ? Please help as i dont wana lose my data. 2nd i dont have backup of my data too

If there was a backup created prior to doing the update this will be available to you after the update .
If you did not backup the data to itunes, there may have been a back up created in icloud.
Without a created back up from either icloud or itunes your data will be lost.

Thanks @ KiltedTim, but losing "only" any data is really not acceptable and, in this case, the phone had not been backed up, but thanks for taking the time. Also, yes, fungible means what I think it means. An iphone is a completely substitutible commodity, unlike my data, so instructions that inform me as to how to fix a phone I could replace for a small sum of money while failing to address the more important issue of the data are almost useless - they potentially save me the $99 it would cost me to replace the phone if I were so inclined to trust another apple product. Not worth the hour it took to find them or the 35 minutes on the phone to confirm my suspicions about the data.

I changed my Apple ID but my iCloud didn't change to the new ID. If I delete the old iCloud will I lose all data on my iPod ?

    - Go to Settings>iCloud. Scroll to to bottom of the screen and tap the delete button. The effect all the services listed in Settings>iCloud like Notes, Contact and Calendar.
    - You may be offered the option to retain that data on the iPod. Otherwise it gets deleted.
It does not effect synced media like apps and music purchased with the account..
Note that purchases made with an Apple ID are locked to the ID that purchased them. To update apps you have to sing into the account that purchased them

  • ICloud Storage upgrade.  Purchased, but keep getting emails.  Will I lose my data?

According to the iCloud management page in System Preferences (on my mac) and the Settings page (on my iPhone) I have purchased a 20 gig storage plan for iCloud.   But I keep getting emails claiming my free 20 gig storage plan will be downgraded on 9/30/13. How can I be sure I will not lose my data?

Thanks, Roger.  Do you think this is true, even though I see this on my phone and get this email?  It seems strange (and very bad protocol) that apple would get this specific about the amount of storage I am using, but not monitor whether or not I had purchsed an upgrade.  I've been getting these emails daily for the last week.

  • I rebooted my macbook pro. Will I lose everything when lion is reinstalled?

I need to know so i know whether to start typing my essay up again on my mums laptop :-(

When you re-install Lion, it only installs the OS files, and will not write over your files.  If you are concerned, email yourself a copy of the essay before you re-install.
If you do the "erase and reinstall", then you will lose all data - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11273.
    A simple "reinstall" will not - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3878?viewlocale=en_US.
