Will I make my 2009 Mac desktop any more memory efficient by running current files, (not applications such as Indesign, Photoshop), from a portable solid-state drive? Is it worth the trouble? Thanks
I have a slightly old Mac desktop and it is starting to slow down a lot now that I am using Adobe CS6 software. It is my final year of a 5 year architecture course and I can't afford to buy a new Mac.
Some of my fellow students are having similar problems with laptops and are running applications and files from portable drives - they wiped their entire Macbooks clean. I don't want to wipe my computer and start again as I may lose some of my oldest software which I have lost CDs for. Will it make any difference to run just my active files, or even move my most memory intensive software programs, to an external drive?
My desktop has maximum RAM installed.
Any advice much appreciated.
1. OWC or Crucial are recommended sources for memory. You can usually find a 5% off and free shipping code for Crucial on retailmenot.com. On crucial just key in your system information in their memory selector.
2. Your system likely supports SATA II speeds, so the SSD OWC pointed to would work. I installed one in our 2010 mac mini and it's working well. I originally installed their 6G drive however it ran at SATA I speeds. Turns out the 3G which is specd for SATA II is what was needed and works fine.
3. The OWC package they recommended includes a case to put your existing hard drive in. That helps to be able to transfer your data back to the SSD then you can use it as a backup drive or as an external storage device.

As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM. Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM. RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

My MacBook Pro just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. Since the installation, the Lightroom tools are now all grey. Even the color sliders are grey. Please help!
My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:

I am thinking of getting a Solid State drive for the OS only.
Problems that may a Solid State drive may have with the OS.
1) Defrag I never thought that Leopard needed to or did Defrag the Drive but a Sales rep for apple at Best buy said he thought that they did once the mac was shut down. This was done he said to make defraging easier were unlike windows you had to tell it to or schedule a time to do it and leave it on.
From what I read you are not suppose to Defrag Solid state drives.
If this is true is ether a way to disable it in the OS and if so is their a way to tell it what drives to not defrag?
2. I also see programs for sale for the Leopard OS that parts of programs that are left over from installs and when you delete something if this is true this is also not good because it will slowly fill up the drive.

Well, "never" may have been too strong, but I stand by my statement. OS X just doesn't "defragment" in the commonly accepted sense of the word.
First, it uses "delayed allocation" to reduce the amount- in many cases to zero- of fragmentation that ever occurs.
Second, it does use "adaptive hot-file clustering," whereby an elite class of the most frequently accessed files are written to the drive's "hot band." The limitation on size is <= 10 MBs (if I am not mistaken), and this does occur dynamically. Since this necessarily eliminate any fragmentation for these files, one could state that dynamic fragmentation is occurring. The amount of data we're talking about here is very small, however, so to classify this as generic "defagmentation" would be a stretch.
Third, there is one very limited case when a file will actually be rewritten. Several conditions must be met, the most important being that the file in question must have an allocation of over 8 extents. Since this still applies only to files <= 20 MBs, and given the other fragmentation-prevention measures in place, the conditions under which this occurs will be very, very rare. I will grant, however, that in the rare case that these conditions are all met, the file is indeed relocated to an unfagmented allocation when/if it is opened. Yes, this is dynamic defragmentation.
All this said, "defragmentation" is generally considered to be when a volume is scanned for fragmented file, and those files are all relocated to elimate all fragmentation. This does not occur in OS X.

I am considering purchasing a new Mac desktop. I have, at present, a Liteon 851S ext CD/DVD write and a Maxtor 3200 USB ext hard drive. Will these work with a Mac desktop? My local Apple store could not answer my question.Happy New year to all.
Yes the Mac can read that drive but you would need to Copy the data off of it to the Mac as apposed to Move, which implies Deleting them from the drive as they were transferred from the external to the Mac. Since the Mac can Not Write to NTFS drives it can't Delete anything as that is really a Write operation, IE Making changes to the NTFS formatted drive.
Once you have that Data on Both your New Mac and you Older Windows PC you can format that drive to work on both system.
If you want to and plan on doing that post back and I'll explane how, it is simple but should be done on a Windows PC.
If you only plan on using it on the Mac from now on that is fairly simple also and is done on the Mac, Once you have the files from it stored on the Mac.
Yes you could burn those photos to DVD but that is just a waste of DVDs, you don't need to. -

Database: the pros put the index in memory and page fix (virtual volumes in memory; cache; hold disk drive index in memory). Caching storage has been around for almost 40 yrs.
Today you can use SSDs as front end cache to hold DB indexes and frequent data for web servers and such adn use slower secondary storage.

I put a large photo library on 2 x 10K VRs vs SSD and couldn't tell much difference (SSD is soundless of course) But my WD Blacks make as much noise and run 15*C hotter than those 10K (not what you expect?)
While 10K and 7.2K are in the 140-180MB/sec range, they are in 3.0 to 12.0 ms seeks, not 0.01 ms.
People wonnder why shrink a drive to 2.5" (or why not go down to 1.8".
How long does it take to reposition a disk head? how often? the 10K VR travels on outer tracks at 70 MPH. Really trying to fly off into space.

My Apple wireless keyboard won't connect to my Mac mini any more. Going through the Bluetooth Setup Assistant doesn't help - the computer finds the keyboard, but when I type in the pass code it fails to pair with it. The green LED on the bottom of the keyboard flashes twice at roughly two-second intervals. I've tried replacing the batteries and this has had no effect. I have all the latest software updates installed.

There are easily hundreds of variants of the iMac dating back to 1998. Many of the pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers cannot support an Apple wireles keyboard. Because this model has been in production for so long, it is important for you to let us know as much about your computer as possible so someone won't give you information that may not be appropriate to your iMac variant.

1) Your processor type and Mac OSX version, both available by doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu at the left end of the menu bar:

Mac desktop. 10.6.8. Text edit. Not locked. Read and write, not read only. Documents are locking when they are moved from desktop to another folder or saved directly into that folder on the server. Not happening with anyone else but me and the boss's computer so has to be in the properties for my text edit software. Techies can't figure it out after trying for two weeks. Boss can do a cut and paste and put into a new document, but that's starting to become a problem.

If you have a tablet that runs full Windows 8 - not Windows 8 RT, which is limited.
And if you install the full Adobe Reader for Windows, not the special Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8.
Then you will have the same features as a desktop.
Unless they can't be accessed in touch mode, since it isn't a touch app. -

Mac Pro fans run full speed after installing Solid State Drives
I recently visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple store because my Mac Pro's fans were running at full speed after installing 2 solid state drives. The genius told me that it was because the drives themselves are so small they don't touch the metal tab on the motherboard that reads the drive's temperature, so it defaults to running full speed. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried smcFan Control but it doesn't let me set the actual fan speed. I'm getting 5200 rpms on my Boost A and B fans, and this causes an insane amount of noise. Can anyone help?
Which model Mac Pro?
I have an SSD in a 2009 (MacPro4,1). I removed it from the 2.5 in stamped metal can, and just installed the bare circuit board onto the SATA connector. It does not make any contact with the metal tab below the SATA connector. The only trouble I have is that Tech Tool Pro says its temperature is not optimum when it does disk tests. -
I own a Mac book Pro 13" it has a 250 gb solid state drive and I would like to put a larger one in is this possible.
You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do. -
