Will i need lion to upgrade to mountain lion?

I am thinking about purchasing the OS X Lion, but think I should wait for the OS X Mountain Lion.  I currently have the Snow Leopard.
If I purchase the OS X Lion now and the Mountain Lion comes out in a few months.  Will I get a discount price or will I be wasting my money?  Also, Because I have the Snow Leopard, will I have to upgrade to Lion in order to get the Mountain lion.

Usually a free upgrade is related to a newly purchased machine. As was the case with Lion, anybody who bought a computer just before Lion was released were able to download Lion for free for a limited time. Buying a computer with Lon on it just before Mountain Lion is released may work the same way, but until it is released no one can tell you. But I would not think you would get a free system upgrade for just buying the Lion OSX.
Good Luck

I have just sucsessfully installed MS Money on a MacBook Pro using Parallels and MS Windows 8.1.
So far it seems to be working just fine except bank account downloads don't automatically appear when Money starts.  You have to do a file import from the downloads.

  • I need to upgrade Snow Leopard to get icloud before my mobileme expires at the end of June.  If I buy Lion, will I be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion free when it comes out?  When is MLion going to be released in UK?

I am running Snow Leopard and have a Mobile Me account.  My Mobile Me account expires at the end of June.  I have been told that I will need to buy the Lion upgrade to run icloud on my imac, but I am aware that Lion is due to be replaced by Mountain Lion this summer.  I don't want to have to buy two up grades!  Will Mountain Lion be released before my mobile me account expires?  If not and I buy the Lion upgrade, will I be able to upgrade it to Mountain Lion, free, in view of the fact that I will only have had Lion for a very short time and could not avoid this purchase??????

    HI...
We have no way of knowing exactly when Mountain Lion will be released. Most likely, if you upgrade to Lion now you'll be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but the actual minimum requirements are unknown at this time.
Lion is only $29.99 plus any applicable taxes and fees and available from the App Store, or you can purchase the thumb drive > OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

    Read the following technical specification
This will tell you what facilities your computer needs to be upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Pay particular attention to the amount of RAM.  Apple says you need 2GB, most people here would recommend 4GB.
When you are satisfied you are equipped, you will need to use App store to buy the download ... and away you go.

  • Will upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion make my Lion Time Machine Backups unusable?

I had a situation where when I upraded to Lion from Snow Leopard, my Time Machine Backups became unusable. It says that the Backups were not compatible and it was really frustrating because I had to delete my backups from Snow Leopard and re-backup from my Mac with the newly installed Lion.
Will this happen if I upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion? Has anyone had trouble from this upgrade to Mountain Lion. Has your Time Machine backups been working fine with the new operating system?
    Thanks!!

Will upgrading to Mountain Lion erase all my files? And can't I only backup my home folder from Time Machine anyways? As long as I don't use Migration Assistant to restore the System files.
But yeah, will upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion erase all my files and accounts?
    Thanks!!

  • What will I need to make a successful conversion from Quark 8.5 with Autoprice to InDesign?

We have Quark 8.5 and the operating system version: iMac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) - Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0, and two graphic designers.
We use AutoPrice to import Prices, Model Numbers, and Shipping symbols among other things.
What will I need to convert our Quark files, while preserving our data tags for data import?
Will I need a hardware upgrade to be successful?  If so what would you suggest?
We are a small company without an unlimited budget.
Any advice, suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated
Are there other options that we should consider?
What are some of the critical decisions or thinking points we should consider?
Can you suggest some resources that would help me make this decision?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Remember there are several flavors of HD including HDV, DVCProHD and AVCHD.
Otherwise, export current settings audio and video self contained.
Drop it into Compressor and elect the DVD 16:9 preset for the length of the movie in total minutes. Choose ac3 audio.
    Encode.
Elect the HD DVD preset after launching DVD SP.
Take the m2v and ac3 files and import them into DVD SP 4.1.2 or DVD SP 4.2
Burn to a red laser dye DVD5 disk. You can get about 40 minutes of DVCProHD on each one.

No. Mountain Lion Client and Server are two separate purchases and downloads. You will need to upgrade to both.

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with bootcamp 3.3 on my Imac 2011. I need to updgrade to mountain lion. If I first upgrade to mountain lion, how do I go about upgrading from bootcamp 3.3 to latest bootcamp for mountain lion?
I have seen a lot of discussions upgrading from Boot Camp 4 to 5 but no answers upgrading from boot camp 3.3 to 5. My worry is that if I upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion, that my bootcamp partition will no longer be able to boot up. There seem to be a lot of threads suggesting problems that are possible. Has anyone gone through this upgrade with success?

Before doing any installation restart OSX from your 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to Both Repair The Disk and Repair the Permissions of your Macintosh HD.
Next remove your Snow Leopard DVD and restart your iMac into OSX.
Update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard by clicking the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version.
Use Time Machine to make a Full Backup of your Macintosh HD.
Shut down and restart into Windows by holding the Option key at the chime and selecting Windows.
Now use Windows Backup to make a Full Image Backup of your Windows Installation to a removable drive.
Shut Down and Boot back into OSX.
Open the Mac App Store from your Dock to buy and download Mountain Lion. Then follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
Upgrading your OSX to 10.8 should not effect the Windows Partition at all since you are only upgrading the Mac side. You should not have to run the Boot Camp Assitant 5 Utility in OSX at all.
Your Boot Camp 3.3 Windows Support Drivers et. al only effect your Windows installation and should continue to run fine after upgrading.
Which version of Windows do you already have installed on the existing Boot Camp Partition?
Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

  • I had erase my hardrive and need to reinstall OS X, do I need to reinstall Snow Leopard/mountain lion first before Maverick will take

I had to erase my HD, I have Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion was added for an upgrade after that, now when I try to download the OS X, my HD looks like it going to take it, then it goes no where. And now what is showing up is OS X  Maverick for a download, which I didn't even know it existed until I had to down load.  I am wondering will I have redownload Snow Leopard or Mountain lion  before the OS X Maverick will download.
    thank you

Well, you can do an erase and install via the Recovery HD:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
