Will I need to put more memory on my MacBook Pro for Mavericks?

I got my MacBook Pro in Februrary 2013 (so I think it's a mid 2012 model? Not sure). The memory for it is 4gb and 1600mhz. It came with OS 10.8, but I am now upgrading to Mavericks. My question... will I need to get more memory to fit Mavericks onto my computer? Or will what I have suffice? I don't have much stuff on my computer; I backed everything up before beginning the process (should be done in a few hours, and I can always pause it if necessary). The backup flashdrive holds 8gb and I'd say, in total, I have about 4.5gb worth of stuff (word documents, pictures, and videos) on my computer. How will that affect what Mavericks takes up (Mavericks says it needs 5.32gb of space)?

With all due respect, I find it hard to believe you ever worked at Apple.
You can't spell. And you believe that Mavericks only needs 1 GB to install. Totally incorrect.
I can easily upgrade my computer with more memory, too, after all is said and done.

If you like to work with photos, graphics, or videos at all, then 2 GB would be much better; I actually had 3 GB installed when I was running Snow Leopard (that was the maximum for my iMac). The minimum requirements published are exactly that: a minimum. For instance, for Mountain Lion, it says 2 GB; unless you do nothing but email and web browsing, 4 GB is a much more realistic minimum.
So, if your computer model can handle 2 GB, go for it.

I'm new to the Mac world and I need to install windows on my new Macbook pro for running my flight simulator software which only runs on windows. I would like to purchase and download the windows 8.1 rather than buying the CD.
When i go to the microsoft store and click windows 8.1 it says it is only for who has windows xp or vista...
can you tell me where and how can i purchase the full installation 8.1 for download?
i will keep the ISO file on my flash drive.

Trying to figure out how to free up more memory on my macbook pro

Hello. My name is Seth. I recently started to notice that my RAM when I start up my macbook pro starts at about 3 GB. I wasn't sure if this was a normal number or if there is any way I can free up a little bit more somehow. I got my mac in Novmeber 2010. I have 4GB of DDR3. The version is 10.6.8. If there is anything anyone can tell me to help, please do. If there is any more information you need from me that I forgot to put in this post, tel me and I will reply as quickly as I can. Well, first, Thomas, that was a very gracious reply. Nice to see that kind of thing on forums, as too many any more are just plain caustic. Shows what basic anonymity does to some people, huh. And actually, such causticness is probably more along the lines of a pendulum swing *away* from the also too-prevalent "political correctness" that, well, weinies need to use. Methinks that perhaps all of America, perhaps all of the world, is becoming pathologically bipolar. LOL So anyway, wanna say that you sound like a real decent guy. Must be a Mac guy. hehe
Secondly, my reasons for submitting what I thought were helpful alternatives to looking at spinning beach balls while your fingernails waiting on the keyboard grow another half inch comes from my experiences. I'd like to elucidate.... When I got back into Macs in '06 after 18 yrs on The Dark Side, & 2 or 3 yrs with Macs, professionally, prior to that, I re-started with a PowerBook then. 1GB RAM, max. Lame, even then. And then a MacBook1,1 @1.83. Very first all-white one. 2GB max. Lame. Trouble, trouble. Frustratingly so. And now, I've got a 7,1 @2.4. Very last all-white one Apple made. I like the all-white ones. 2Gigs again, but that I bumped up to its 8Gig max. And STILL I have RAM jams. Not as frequently of course, but they happen. And what I run into *most* often, is the system NOT automagically releasing Inactive RAM. Just sits there. And if I've got FF or something that leaks memory running, & I myself crash & sleep, I wake up to completely or nearly so solidly wired-up RAM. Which means it's power button for 5 seconds time. & then Applejack at reboot to fix stuff that got hosed. Doesn't happen often, but enough to make me go search for solutions when I shouldn't be having any with the above-average 8Gigs of RAM.
So one day I discovered the Purge command. And using that has kept the aforementioned scenarios from deteriorating to the aggravating point when not even the beach ball comes up, nor of course anything else.
And so I use it. Use it a LOT when I've got open apps' icons spread from one side of my screen to the other, especially Win7 in VMWare when I've got a bunch of Mac stuff open, too. And I have read NOwhere, except what you have written, that there is any "harm" to purging at all. Hasn't caused me any probs, I know that. Only good stuff. I *would* like to know about any possible problems that, as you stated, purging could cause, as published by a Mac magazine or respected tech site. So if you can steer me & others who read this & are curious about the subject to any current articles about that, I would like to take a look-see & learn. But what I'm going by is what has proven to work, for me, & I am pretty certain that at least all Intel machines running 10.6+ work in pretty much the same way too, so.... That's why I posted. Just sharing my experiences, a screenshot, and the simple little script app I made in less than a minute. And I admit, yeah, the XCode DL is pretty darn big. But ya don't have to install everything. Just what's needed, & then you can dump the Receipt file if ya want, or save it to an external something or other.
But not wanting to be a butt here, I will do some research about the use of purge, because you stated that 'true power users' understand when its use is apt, & when it's needed & so forth. Well, I *know* when it's needed in my experiences, & it does the job, without repercussions of any kind. But I'll look into it, willing to learn & throw away old ideas if appropriate.
Thirdly, RE: Novice users taking my advice:
Stupid is as stupid does, Thomas. You know that. I know I've been through that during my occasionally steeper learning curves, maybe you as well. That's how I learned stuff, particularly DOS/Windows, which just screams gimmee your attention anyway. So what I'm saying is that I find it loathsome to think that I or anyone would have to babysit the reckless ones. Who are they? Must I assume that ANYONE & EVERYONE fits that category, & so submit pablum & half-baked mostly useless mediocre BS smoke? nyu uh. not me. I have enough respect, you might say, for people to give them the benefit of the doubt that they'll choose wisely. And those who don't, well, Darwin's Law steps in. Been there too, done that too. I consider submitting diluted blabla just so disgustingly pompous, really. Sayin' something, but then you're not, too. Self-serving junk, in other words.
So...... done now. Thanks for the tips, Thomas, & the advice, & I'll heed ya some but I can't think of readers of these forums as babies who need to be coddled. Mistakes made are learning experiences. The most important learning being, of course, is when to gamble on possible learning, & when not to. That's the beginning of not making stupid-a** mistakes. And some want to learn that 'hard way' either by choice or, yeah, with intelligence-backed recklessness, & some wouldn't dream of learning that way on their machine. Scares 'em. They don't know that you can *always* click on the 'cancel' button, yaknow? When in doubt, gamble or get out. But don't straddle.
I'm counting on folks having enough brains between their ears to figure out what's doable for them at their skill/knowledge level when they read about tech procedures, & what's not. And what's got the pretty good odds of coming out in their favor, should they take a plunge of some technical sort. And that's learning, too. Probably the best kind, actually. Which couldn't happen unless somebody "pushes the envelope" (apparently) & submits some obscure tech procedures. What I proposed isn't super-techy by any stretch of the imagination in those who know. Not saying my stuff's all that, but I will say that Jobs knew all about that sort of edginess, which hoisted only red flags in some people's minds of course, the mediocrity lovers' minds that is. And I am pretty much like-minded with Jobs' ways in that respect. And I abhor the 'hypersafe,' banal ways of doing things. That ain't different. That's crap. hehe ok. nuff said. out.....

HT4241 What video settings will I need to change on my mid-2009 Macbook Pro?

I am trying to send Audio/Video to my mother's T.V. using a third party combo cable(item # 6331), from monoprice.com. We have a 'Mid-2009 Macbook Pro. I can get the Audio with no problems. I tried all of the different resolutions on the Macbook and the closese Video image I can fet is a vertical sliver in the upper left hand corner of the T.V.(52'' Sony Bravia Model # unknown, mounted on wall) Please help. Mothers Day is coming up an All My Childeren is coming back, but will be on Hulu. Thank You

The tech specs list the upgrades that were available from Apple when that model was being sold new. They don't necessarily reflect the aftermarket-upgradabaility. I don't believe there'd be any reason you couldn't put a hard drive/SSD of whatever capacity you want in that MBP (of course it needs to be the right physical size).
That being said, it's good practice to make sure you have a window to return it just in case.

What can handle the most memory (RAM?) and speed - MacBook Pro or iMac? I'll be using Adobe Creative Suite 6. I prefer MacBook Pro because of portability, but don't know how it compares to iMac in memory and speed. Thank you.

The only currently produced MacBook Pro with user-replaceable memory is the entry level, non-Retina model.
The only currently produced iMac with user-replaceable memory is the 27" model.
The MacBook Pro can address as much as 16 GB RAM (though that configuration is not available from Apple).
The iMac can address as much as 32 GB.
Creative Suite 6 will work fine on either one but the iMac is by far the more capable of the two models.

Go to the Crucial website and use the System Scanner tab to determine which upgrades are available for your model - you don't have to buy from Crucial, but they do offer some of the best RAM for Macs available.

i lived in japan for years and i go to visit all the time. where i have been the plug itself is the same size, only the frequency was different 50hz v. our 60 hz. not sure how that affects the computer, i know it affects an american clock. i used my stereo equipment fine. never used an american computer over there.

A utility like GrandPerspective is a good one for seeing what is taking up space on your hard drive.
Video and photo files tend to take up a lot of room.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
In the case of the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, memory is soldered into the logic board, so you can't add more memory after buying the MacBook.
However, memory isn't your problem. One thing is the memory and another thing is the hard drive, and you are running out of space in the hard drive, not in memory.
To fix this, just delete files that you don't need, or move them to an external drive, in order to make free space on your MacBook

You have to open the bottom cover of the MBP to get to the memory slots. There are about 10 very small screws around the perimeter, some of which are longer than others so you have to be very careful not to mix them up when you take the cover off. You will need a very small phillips-head screwdriver (small jewelers size). Once you have removed the screws you may have to gently pry the cover off (there is some sticky stuff inside). You will then see the RAM slots more or less in the middle of the computer.
The booklet that came with your MBP has instructions about how to insert/remove the RAM SODIMMs ... there is a plastic tab on each side of the SODIMMs that you push outward and the RAM will pop up slightly ... you can then gently pull it out. Note there is a slot cut in the pin edge of the SODIMMs ... remember it's orientation so you put the new RAM in the same way. It only goes in one way.
It's wise to use the crucial.com Memory Advisor first so you get the exact kind & amount of RAM that is compatible with your MBP.

If your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work.

Which macbook pro for my needs, please...

Buying a new macbook pro for use with photoshop and lightroom, possibly a bit of illustrator and indesign thrown in.
I will use my laptop at home always attached to a large screen. Right now a 25" NEC. I may add an additional screen as well, so I might have two screens besides the laptop, one attached via hdmi.
Right now I don't do video work. No gaming concerns for me. Photoshop and Lightroom the bulk of my work. Big catalog. Large size photoshop files. Well near 1 gb sometimes.
Will the mbp with just the intel iris pro graphics card be enough for my uses? I'm thinking to upgrade processor to 2.5ghz. Will upgrade ssd to 500gb. Or do I need, will I benefit from the nvidia card and card switching, dgpu?
I've just been reading about problems with the discrete graphics card version. And that the mbp always uses that card when there is an external monitor attached. Creates additional heat for the computer.
Just looking for some advice before i hand over the cash. There is only a 100 difference in price so in the end I'm not concerned about cost. Just want a computer to do what I need, do it well, and for me to have as few problems as possible.

I have an early 2011 MBP 13" that I put a 120 GB SSD and 8 GB or RAM in. All from OWC.

Of the newer Retina MBPs the largest SSD is 512 GB and that's going to be PCIe. In the 13" 2.8 GHz and above you can add a 1 TB for an extra $500/

I think that's just the 15 and 17" MBP 2011 MBP. There was finally a recall on those.

Personally I'm partial to the refurbed 2012 MBP with the standard SATA connectors. Known performer, easy to swap in another drive.
