Will I notice a difference from 1.5gb to 2gb RAM?

Hi
I've got a 1.67 Powerbook with 1.5GB of RAM, the RAM for this model Crucial is selling looks very cheap so I' thinking about jumping to 2GB but will I really notice a difference. is it worth me doing this?
Thanks guys

One way to check is to open your activity monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities). Check the system memory tab, and specifically page ins and page outs. These values reset when you reboot, so what you're interested in is the ratio of the two. If page outs is 10% or greater of page ins, you can use more memory for the applications you run. A page out is when memory is written to the hard drive to make room for something else in memory, which is a comparatively slow process. In a perfect system, page outs would equal zero. To give you an idea .... I have a 2GB system. For the applications I run, my page ins are 48493 and page outs are 1350. Page outs are a little less than 3% of page ins, so, ignoring for the moment that I can't add any more memory, more memory wouldn't be useful.

  • Will I notice a difference on N over G?

I'm thinking about upgrading my router to a model that supports 802.11n. Will I notice a difference? I know N is faster, but will it make a difference if my Internet speed from my cable modem is 10Mbps? That's still under G right?

That is correct, but if this is a network and you are planning on using TC as a wireless backup option for Time Capsule or file transfers, N is better.

  • CS6 - Will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?

With regard to PS CS6: I'm specifically interested in CS6's ability to utilize video memory to make PS faster, more powerful; but will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?
Currently running PS CS5 on an iMac (Duo-Core, 8GB RAM, 512MB Video RAM).
Was hoping Apple was going to release new Mac Pro (been saving dough for a few years now). Since that didn't happen, sticking with current Mac setup for at least another year, and this includes a video card that only has 512MB memory.
Is it worth it for me to upgrade to CS6 with regard to speed/performace?
    Any input would be appreciated.

You need at least 1Gb video memory to make use of the new GPU accelerated features in CS6

  • Will I notice a difference?

If I choose the 2.8 GHz processor instead of the 2.53, will I notice the difference when using the MacPro 15" laptop?
Will I notice an increase in heat from the higher processor?
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to an even faster 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I went with the 2.53GHz because in my estimation that is the machine at the perfect price point. Lots of processing power/memory/hard drive for the best price. You're going to end up paying a premium for the 2.8 upgrade and only receive a small increase in performance. Plus by upgrading to the 2.8 your warranty is going to change from the stock machine to a CTO. Meaning if something is defective, it will be repaired instead of replaced. For instance if I found something was wrong with MBP when I first bought it, I could have walked into the apple store and get it replaced. If I opted for the 2.8, it would have had to be sent in for repair. They could have replaced it then, but it would take time to configure a new one, either way its too much for too little

  • 1.7 ghz vs 2.0 ghz will I notice the difference?

I am looking into getting a Macbook Air and I was wondering if I would be able to tell the difference between 1.7 ghz and 2.0 ghz. I plan on using the laptop for pretty general stuff like homework and the occasional video editing the final cut pro. Both models I am looking at are i7's with 8gbs of ram. Any information will help.
    Thanks,

8gig regardless of RAM, on general things you will not notice a difference, no.
Youd see about 15% on heavy photo and vid editing applications

  • Different i5 processors in MBA and MBPR - Will I notice the difference?

Trying to decide between 13"MBA and 13" MBPR (both will come with 8G and 128 storage).  I notice the i5 in MBA is rated1.4GZ, boost to 2.7Ghz and the i5 in MBPR is 2.6GHZ boost to 3.1 GHZ.  Will I notice a difference?  I am struggling with the purchase decision.  This is my first Mac purchase.  Machine will be used for family including 2 middle schoolers, so used for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, hobby level iMovie and iPhoto.  Machine will largely stay home.
The only other differences I see is the HDMI port on MBPR (can't decide if I would use, but seems like it would be handy if making movies and storing photos) and the display, but not sure I will really see a difference.
Any thoughts?  As configured the price difference is about $160.

The MBP is faster than the MBA, you will notice.
128GB is very little, I would reconsider that.

  • Will I see a difference from my old core 2?

I currently have a core 2 macbook pro 2.3 Mhz
    a few quick questions
    1) is the led screen better than LCD?
    2) Do you think I will notice a speed difference?
I ask these questions because I spilled a beverage on my almost 2 year old macpro
and am thinking about replacing it. It still works although several of the keys are dead
can always replace the keyboard but was thinking of upgrading anyway and on the 17inch is the LED better?

Also, battery life is longer and they run cooler. Plus you get the newfangled three-finger trackpad and a new keyboard layout (no Enter key or numeric keypad).

  • Will I notice a difference in speed?

    Between 320GB Serial ATA @ 5400 vs 250GB Serial ATA @ 7200?
Will be using laptop mainly for Internet browsing and playing DVDs?

DVDs don't use the hard drive, they use the DVD drive, so no issue there. Internet browsing would probably feel fine on a 4200RPM drive. Don't worry, a MacBook Pro is designed for far more intense performance demands. The drive speed would only make a difference if you were chugging through hours of digital video footage or piles of 10-megapixel Photoshop files.

  • Is it worth the $ to upgrade from 1.5Gb to 2Gb of RAM?

I have a G4 Dual 450 AGP with 1.5Gb of RAM. I am working on a large catalog. I use InDesign and Photshop a lot. Will I even notice the extra 512 Mb enough to justify the purchase? Thanks.

    Hi
You could try using the Activity Monitor application located in the Applications\Utilities folder to monitor your existing memory usage whilst you perform your work. The following article explains how to interpret the information shown:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
As already mentioned a processor upgrade may be more beneficial. IMHO you get the most bang for the buck with a mid range processor upgrade, perhaps a single 1.4 - 1.5GHz 7455 based one, e.g.

  • How much difference will I notice between 2011 and 2013 MBA, fully upgraded?

I'm considering upgrading. I have a 2011 13 inch MBA, fully upgraded. So:
    * 256 GB SSD
    * 4 GB RAM
    * 1.8 Ghz core i7
I'd get the 2013 13 inch with 512 GB, 8 GB ram and 1.7 GHz i7. I don't need the battery life, I'd be upgrading because I've noticed a few choke points on my current machine:
    * Sometimes tabs will lag when opening (despite very fast internet)
    * Fan is loud
    * Computer runs hot in summer months
    * Occasional system lag or lag on specific programs like Pages when I have large files open
    * General slowness that happens sometimes.
Will any or all of those issues be reduced with the increase in RAM or other system wide increases?

It's hard to say just how much improvement it will make on the examples you gave, because there is no indicator of how much resources are being consumed by open and running apps.
Will you notice a difference... Probably. A HUGE difference, likely not, unless the memory resources are a limiting factor already on you machine.
I have a 2010, a 2011, and a 2012 MacBook Air. The difference between the 2010 and the 2013's speed is only slightly evident on 75% of my usage. The other 25%, the diffrence is more pronouced (when doing long duration tasks like video and photo editing).
You may want to upgrade this time around, especially with your memory possibly being a factor. I however, am sitting out this one cycle. (unless I fall of the wagon)

  • Will I see a difference...?

In February I stupidly purchased a new imac 10 (21" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz 4GB/1TB imac) from Best Buy not Apple. I have been using it and not really seeing a difference in normal day to day or using Photoshop than my pc quad-core. Due to this, I am now arguing with myself for the last 2 weeks that I should have just bought the Quad-Core imac and then I would see a difference between using a DC over a QC (but scared hearing all the 27" screen issues). I am now past the return policy but they said they could refund my money to a gift-card allowing me to use the gift card and order my QC iMac from Best-Buy's site which will have me w/o a mac for 5-7 days (now kicking myself that i didnt buy it from Apple as I could've just did an exchange). This terrifies me!!!
    My questions are as follows:
    1) just using my mac to browse, download large files, & editing photos in Aperature and Photoshop, will I see a big difference if I NOT buy the QC mac, & simply upgrade the RAM to 8GB?
    2) When I upgrade the RAM, is 8GB total the max this imac can upgrade to, or can i have the two empty slots as 4GB each (2 2 4 4)??? Is that ok or not recommended?
    3) For what I explained I use my imac for (downloading, browsing, & graphics) will I notice a difference between having an 8GB/1TB Intel CD2 and the 4GB Quad-Core imac (other than screen size)?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure whether to just upgrade the new mac i have RAM and buy whatever Quad_Core or awesomeness Apple releases next year at tax time. ??? I am trying to not buy a new computer next year bc its my husband's turn to get one next year, but he did say he thinks I should stay with the imac I have and hold off to see what Apple releases next in an imac. So confused! Now, I admit, if I could simply walk into Best Buy or Apple tomorrow and exchange for teh QC, then my decision is simple--the QC!!! But being without my imac for 5-7 days is a scarey thought!

Check out this article from Macworld. It has info about the performance differences and a good suite of "real world" application tests:

  • Will Final Cut Pro X work nicely on a late 2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM?

I want to get FCPX but I am not sure if it will be so good on this Macbook Pro... Will it work decently on it even with just 2GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz and a 13" screen? I also have the lastest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Check here to see if your graphics card is supported. Core i5 is fine, 8 GB RAM is fine but more is better.
You will need fast external drives (FW800 or TB). FCP X has a fully functioning trial version.

  • Will I notice a significan difference from 320 MB to 576 MB of RAM?

My 466 MHz graphite Clamshell will be here tomorrow. I bought it with 320MB of RAM (64 soldered + 256 MB chip). I am planning on just keeping this laptop downstairs so when I'm up at night with my newborn, I'll have something to surf the web on. I won't be doing photoshop or iMovie with it...pretty much checking email, reading CNN, and going on Facebook. Will I notice a big difference between 320 and 576 (64 soldered + 512 chip)? Omni has the 512 chip on sale for $26.99 plus shipping right now, so it's tempting. Will 320 MB start to run out on long internet sessions, since it is an older computer, and has to work harder? :P
    Thanks!

I agree a high-speed connection helps, but doesn't more available RAM help the application run better and therefore display information faster? Sometimes Firefox just gets hung up trying to load a page, even when I'm using ethernet to connect. I looked at my Activity Monitor, and Firefox is using 69 MB of RAM and has set aside 266 MB of virtual memory! And that was just having the Google home page open. I created a screen shot:
    http://www.joshwrichards.com/images/memory.tiff
Why wouldn't adding more physical memory help Firefox run better, since it wouldn't have to dip into so much virtual memory?

Between the 2 fusion drives , 1 is 1tb 5400RPM and 1 is 1tb 7200RPM, will you see much difference in speed as I understand the speed comes from the ssd part..?
    Will it not be noticeable?

It would not be as noticable as one would think. The speed of the OS will come from the SSD portion of the drive. The SATA portion is mostly used for data storage which the drive only has to access as needed, not constantly. So over all, there is a bit of a difference but not enough to make a big impact.
