Will I notice a significant performance drop if I run my Imac 8,1(early 2008) direct from an external firewire 800 Harddrive

I notice quite a difference in two of my externals because of that (the 5400 rpm drive was a warranty replacement and I had no idea it wouldn't be 7200 rpm - but that's another subject.....).

Is ther any performance drops once OS X Mavericks is installed on Late 2008 Macbook (Aluminum Unibody)?

I just installed it on mine last night and noticed that the fans basically don't stop running when I have any programs running...Pretty disappointed in that, but hoping something will make it go away.

  • Booting my imac from an external firewire drive suddenly stopped working. Disk still mounts but it will not boot the machine!

I took my MacBook Pro in for repairs and erased the drive for safety AFTER having copied the entire contents to an external firewire 800 drive using SuperDuper!
The copy process made the disk bootable and I was able to boot up my iMac and run it just as if I were working on my MacBook Pro. After a couple of times working this way, the iMac stopped booting from my drive.
The drive shows up when starting up by pressing the option key but then, after a long time, the iMac shows a circle/slash symbol as if it can't find the system files.
If I restart without pressing the option key, the disk mounts on the desktop and I can use it as an external drive just fine!  I tried selecting it in System Preferences as the startup disk, but the same thing happens, blank grey screen with the circle/slash.
Since this happened with a Seagat drive - a brand that has failed me in the past many times - I thought it was a disk problem. I had backed up my MacBook pro contents to another Toshiba drive, and booted from there perfectly well for a couple of times...
Until the same thing happened! Thank God I didn't trash the Seagate although it makes very faint clicking noises that will keep me far away from using it again anyway... but that's another story!
iMac runs 10.5.8, the boot disk (and my MacBook) runs on 10.6.8 if that makes any difference... And now I'm scared that when I copy back to my MacBook Pro it might not boot up at all!!!
    What gives???

You need to reinstall Snow Leopard onto the external drive:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Will aperture run off an external firewire 800 drive?

    Hey All,
I have an iMac that has firewire 800 as its fastest port and my aperture library is getting too big to have on my maun hard drive. If I were to get an external enclosure will I be able to move my aperture library over and still have the same fluid workflow or am I going to get lag going over firewire 800?
    Thanks
    Ruwan

    Adding to Williams advice:
You might consider leaving your Library on your system drive and moving most (or all) of your Images' Originals from inside your Library to an external drive.  Aperture calls Originals stored outside your Library "Referenced Originals" and has robust tools for managing them.  Read some of the posts here (and check the User Manual -- start here) and ask any questions you have should you choose this route.
As William said, FW800 with a good drive is usually fast enough, but keeping your Library on your system and storing your Images' Originals on an external drive will be faster.  OTOH, it makes administering your Library and Originals more complex, and leaves you to back-up your Originals separately from your Library.

  • Sudden MBP Retina 15" gaming performance drop

    Hi there,
I've owned my Macbook Pro Retina since a few weeks after it came out last year, and have generally loved using it. However, I'm starting to worry now as I've noticed a severe performance drop lately in games.
I've not booted into Bootcamp (Windows 8 x64) for about two months now, but today I loaded up Skyrim, and the performance was atrocious. The game was unplayable at 1920x1200 on high, unmodded. It lags horribly - 10FPS at most. I used to be able to play this game heavily modded and achieve a high FPS. I've noticed a performance drop with other games as well, much lower than what I'd expect from this machine.
I've checked out GPU-Z and the 650M GT clocks up to 900MHz when the game launches.
I'm not sure what has caused this but I've done some reading and people have suggested an "SMC Reset" - I've tried this to no avail. If anyone could lend any advice I'd greatly appreciate it.

Well one problem is that bootcamp hasn't been updated to support Windows 8 yet, so there may be driver issues there. I have experienced this problems and so have others in this forum and an smc reset has fixed the majority. Are you sure you are performing the SMC reset correctly? Also, try a PRAM reset and see if that helps resolve the issue.

  • Discrete graphics card performance drop after overheating

Recently I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent on my pc while overclocking slightly using Sapphire TRIXX. I changed GPU clock from 750 to 84x and memory clock from 900 to 10xx. During a cinematic the com crashed, ctrl at del failed to load up but sound was still coming out. I left it like this for2-5 min before force shutdown. When I turned on my laptop again n tried to play games there was a huge performance drop. Games running at 60 fps turned to 20 plus when using dedicated graphics card only ( I disabled dynamic mode n used fixed mode while playing amnesia also, which means I was purely using the dedicated graphics card.)
My laptop is a hp dm4 3005tx Beats edition, with Intel I5 2.5GHz processor and 8.00 gig ram. I also disabled paging file on my laptop btw, regretting this .
can some1 tell me hw to fix.this problem or can I replace my discrete graphics card? Because my laptop has Radeon hd 7470m and Intel hd graphics

The graphics card is soldered on so no replacement. I would do a wipe and reload of the OS and stop overclocking laptop video cards. They are too sensitive to heat and other issues. You are asking for trouble, and may have already found it. At a minimum run DriverCleaner and remove the video driver until you get back to a low-res screen generic vga hardware and then reinstall the best driver you can find.

  • Will a Firewire 800 hard drive work on my MacBook with Firewire 400?

Hi, I have a MacBook I bought in 2008. The FireWire specs say " Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
I am considering a new external hard drive (the Iomega MiniMax) and want to use Firewire for this one. The specs for the hard drive say: "The MiniMax includes 2 fast FireWire 800 interfaces, a USB 2.0 hub, plus a FireWire 400 to 800 cable."
Will this FireWire 400 to 800 cable allow me to plug my FireWire 400 laptop port to this FireWire 800 harddrive port? It sounds like it will but I wanted a sanity check before I order it.
    Thanks.

Yes, that should work just fine.

  • Western Digital 3T Firewire 800 will not boot iMac

The internal drive on my iMac (intel) is small (300G) and corrupted. My idea was to buy an external firewire 800 drive and use it as the boot disk.
I bought the western digital "My Book Studio" drive (WDB3G0030HAL). I installed the system from time machine backup and it wouldn't boot so I reinstalled Mountain LIon using the recovery partition. After that, I learned it will boot my macBook Pro but still doesn't boot the iMac.
I have found older articles about western digital having problems getting external drives to boot.
Does anyone have newer information or work arounds?
    thanks
    Dwight

Here is a list of WD bootable drives:

You can check to see if yours is on it.
FWIW, are you saying that you have one backup and are trying to boot two different machines with it? Unless the two machines have the same build, that is not possible - Macs simply cannot be booted or run with a system version older than what they came with.

  • CS6 - Will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?

With regard to PS CS6: I'm specifically interested in CS6's ability to utilize video memory to make PS faster, more powerful; but will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?
Currently running PS CS5 on an iMac (Duo-Core, 8GB RAM, 512MB Video RAM).
Was hoping Apple was going to release new Mac Pro (been saving dough for a few years now). Since that didn't happen, sticking with current Mac setup for at least another year, and this includes a video card that only has 512MB memory.
Is it worth it for me to upgrade to CS6 with regard to speed/performace?
    Any input would be appreciated.

You need at least 1Gb video memory to make use of the new GPU accelerated features in CS6

  • Big performance drop migrating to Kodo 4.1 (Why would Kodo refuse to batch inserts in certain tables)

    Hello,
While migrating from Kodo 3.4 to Kodo 4.1, I noticed significant drop in
insert performance. I traced it down to some strange batching behavior.
While most of the PCs were committed with batched inserts one particular
class refused to batch and would insert row by row resulting in 10 times
    performance drop.
There is nothing special about the class. Its hierarchy is mapped on base
its table except for one of the lowest members which is mapped vertically.
    Thank you very much

It sounds like kodo 3 was batching that rows and had no problem with it ?
We only ship with the suggested oracle driver 10.2.0.1.0.
50% of our customers use oracle, so it would be a pity if performance
    drops.
Alex ... it sounds like you successfully migrated to kodo4.
Could you give a short summery on how 'difficult' it was in the end ?
From the docs it sounds very easy (except the sentence 'Many
    confniguration
properties and defaults have changed.') but from the newsgroups it sounds
    as if
    you'd struggle a bit.
I'm about to schedule our migration for the first quarter of 2007 and any
    hint
helping use to estimate the time will help us.
If you compare with migration from kodo 2 to 3 ... is it easier or worse ?
