Will I see a difference...?

In February I stupidly purchased a new imac 10 (21" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz 4GB/1TB imac) from Best Buy not Apple. I have been using it and not really seeing a difference in normal day to day or using Photoshop than my pc quad-core. Due to this, I am now arguing with myself for the last 2 weeks that I should have just bought the Quad-Core imac and then I would see a difference between using a DC over a QC (but scared hearing all the 27" screen issues). I am now past the return policy but they said they could refund my money to a gift-card allowing me to use the gift card and order my QC iMac from Best-Buy's site which will have me w/o a mac for 5-7 days (now kicking myself that i didnt buy it from Apple as I could've just did an exchange). This terrifies me!!!
My questions are as follows:
1) just using my mac to browse, download large files, & editing photos in Aperature and Photoshop, will I see a big difference if I NOT buy the QC mac, & simply upgrade the RAM to 8GB?
2) When I upgrade the RAM, is 8GB total the max this imac can upgrade to, or can i have the two empty slots as 4GB each (2 2 4 4)??? Is that ok or not recommended?
3) For what I explained I use my imac for (downloading, browsing, & graphics) will I notice a difference between having an 8GB/1TB Intel CD2 and the 4GB Quad-Core imac (other than screen size)?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure whether to just upgrade the new mac i have RAM and buy whatever Quad_Core or awesomeness Apple releases next year at tax time. ??? I am trying to not buy a new computer next year bc its my husband's turn to get one next year, but he did say he thinks I should stay with the imac I have and hold off to see what Apple releases next in an imac. So confused! Now, I admit, if I could simply walk into Best Buy or Apple tomorrow and exchange for teh QC, then my decision is simple--the QC!!! But being without my imac for 5-7 days is a scarey thought!

Check out this article from Macworld. It has info about the performance differences and a good suite of "real world" application tests:

    Will it not be noticeable?

It would not be as noticable as one would think. The speed of the OS will come from the SSD portion of the drive. The SATA portion is mostly used for data storage which the drive only has to access as needed, not constantly. So over all, there is a bit of a difference but not enough to make a big impact.

  • Will I see a difference if I up grade?

I am using an 24" iMac with a 2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo with 8 gigs of Ram, and
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 for editing with FCP X.
Will I see a notable difference if I upgrade to a  27" iMac with 2.7 GHz Quad Core intel i5 and a AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512 Mb memory
    Thanks

Yes you will. Far better CPU as well. Everything will be faster and smoother.

  • Will I see a difference from my old core 2?

I currently have a core 2 macbook pro 2.3 Mhz
    a few quick questions
    1) is the led screen better than LCD?
    2) Do you think I will notice a speed difference?
I ask these questions because I spilled a beverage on my almost 2 year old macpro
and am thinking about replacing it. It still works although several of the keys are dead
can always replace the keyboard but was thinking of upgrading anyway and on the 17inch is the LED better?

Also, battery life is longer and they run cooler. Plus you get the newfangled three-finger trackpad and a new keyboard layout (no Enter key or numeric keypad).

  • 10.6.8 on a MBA -- will wife see a difference?

My wife uses a mac.com address on Mail and is not interested in any so-called "benefits" of iCloud.  When I move her from mobile.me, will there be any obvious changes for her?
Her mac.com address is one of those associated with my mobile.me account and I will be grudgingly moving to Lion and iCloud on my Macs, since I want the syncing with my iPads.
Message was edited by: Thomas Miller2

iCloud is not supported on OS X 10.6.8. However she can upgrade her MobileMe account to iCloud and use the mail part of the iCloud service by entering the Mail Server Information in her mail app. Once this is done it would essentially look and behave as it did before.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger
One area that concerns me is the way that you say her address is associated with your MobileMe account. Is her address one of your aliases or is this a family MobileMe account that you are talking about. I don't think she will be able to migrate an alias.

  • Will I see difference between DVI over VGA monitors?

    hi all,
I have my G4s connected to one VGA LCD monitor via KVM adapter box. They both have video cards with DVI capabilities. Will I see a difference if I were to use a DVI monitor?
    Thanks
    Web dude

    Hi-
Yes, there will be a difference.
LCD monitors are digital, and so is the graphical data produced by the graphics card.
For VGA (analog) the graphics card converts the digital to analog, and the monitor reprocess that back to digital.
There is a loss of quality, lesser or greater varies with equipment.
If you change to DVI connection, you will need a DVI capable KVM that supports the optimal resolution of the display. I say this, because in the case of 1920 x 1200, not all KVMs can go that high.

  • Different i5 processors in MBA and MBPR - Will I notice the difference?

Trying to decide between 13"MBA and 13" MBPR (both will come with 8G and 128 storage).  I notice the i5 in MBA is rated1.4GZ, boost to 2.7Ghz and the i5 in MBPR is 2.6GHZ boost to 3.1 GHZ.  Will I notice a difference?  I am struggling with the purchase decision.  This is my first Mac purchase.  Machine will be used for family including 2 middle schoolers, so used for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, hobby level iMovie and iPhoto.  Machine will largely stay home.
The only other differences I see is the HDMI port on MBPR (can't decide if I would use, but seems like it would be handy if making movies and storing photos) and the display, but not sure I will really see a difference.
Any thoughts?  As configured the price difference is about $160.

The MBP is faster than the MBA, you will notice.
128GB is very little, I would reconsider that.

  • Between these 2 rigs, will I see a big difference?

    Hi All,
I've got two computer that I use to do basic HD editing and some effects (with Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects).
    First, the two rigs:
    Work Rig:
    Dell XPS 9100
    i7 950
6gb Tri Channel Ram (1000 mhz)
    ATI 5870
    OS Drive (Raid 0 2 x 500gb)
    E Sata Drive (500 gb)
    2 TB USB Backup Drive
    Home Rig:
    Coolermaster HAF 942
    ASUS Sabertooth X58
    Corsair 850 W Power Supply
    i7 950
    12 GB Ram (Corsair 3 x 4gb 1600 mhz)
    Nvidia GTX 470 1280mb
OS Drive (300gb Raptor 10,000 rpm)
    2 x 1 TB Samsung F3 (in a RAID 0)
    2 x 500 GB Backup USB Drives
So, knowing this, I have a few questions...
    1.  Will I see a substancial difference between these two rigs?  Will that difference be more in editing, exporting, or effects rendering?
    2.  Should I add anything to my dell work rig (not my choice to purchase... grrr) that can significantly boost performance?
    3.  Same questions for my home rig (I was thinking of buying another set of the Corsair 12gb ram, and perhaps setting up a second RAID 0.. is that advisable with my mobo and no RAID controller card?)
    4.  Should I reconfigure my work rig so that its not running in a RAID 0?  (this would require a lot of time, another drive purchase, etc.. would it be worth the headache?)
Thank you all for any input... I really love this board as it's been a great resource for me acquiring my current build.

    One more questions:
My work PC has ram that is set up as 6 X 1 GB (533 mhz).
I have found a Kingston set of 3 X 4 GB (1066 mhz).  Would this set of ram (cause of its 3x4 grouping and speed increase) give a considerable performance boost?  Is there a possibility the Dell machine MOBO would accept the higher speed ram?
    Thank you!

  • I do not what tech. is lacking in iphone 4 that prevents it to be able to support turn by turn navi. I do not see any difference btw 4 and 4s and yet 4S can support turn by turn. very disappointed with apple and i will not purchase iphone5.

I do not know what tech. s lacking in iphone 4 that prevents it to be able to use turn by turn navi. I do not see any difference between 4 vs 4S and yet 4S is able to support it. I am very disappointed with apple as i was when 4S was released. I will not purchase iphone5 becuase i think its nowhere near what apple calls it "perfect". there are plenty of other phone around. Lumia 920 for example is a much better phone. Just disappointed with apple...

the fine print in the map section states that turn by turn is only available for 4S and up.

  • Seeing performance difference when using 6-4- keys but not showing 64 bit k

Forgive me if this has beem documented but i looked and couldnt find anything. So here goes.. I have a macbook 3,1 4gb ram. By all documents I know I will not see the 64bit kernel but when I hold down the 6 and 4 key when I boot up.... OMG, SL loads up like nothing I've ever seen. FAST isn't in the ball park. So I check and yes it still shows 64 bit extension/no.
    Has anyone else seen this?

As no Windows 8.x nor 64-bit OS available ATM, I can't check/debug this issue (reported on some forum) by myself --> so, is there some difference in handling hotkeys and/or window functionality between either W7
    and W8.x or 32-bit and 64-bit OS?
VC++ 2013.4 in use. Any suggestions welcome?
You need to debug it in the target OS. Use Hyper-V, VirtualBox, or some other virtual environment and install the target OS. These have trial periods, so you aren't out any money.

  • 1.7 ghz vs 2.0 ghz will I notice the difference?

I am looking into getting a Macbook Air and I was wondering if I would be able to tell the difference between 1.7 ghz and 2.0 ghz. I plan on using the laptop for pretty general stuff like homework and the occasional video editing the final cut pro. Both models I am looking at are i7's with 8gbs of ram. Any information will help.
    Thanks,

8gig regardless of RAM, on general things you will not notice a difference, no.
Youd see about 15% on heavy photo and vid editing applications

Supposedly OSX Mavericks downloaded. I saw it downloading in launchpad. I left and came back and I guess it was all finished. How do I make sure it downloaded. I can't see any difference. Also, I have a notice that I should upgrade Mac EFI Firmware 2.1. And I got a notice that my ILibrary has changed locations. I don't have an ILibrary.

Look in your Applications folder for Install Mac OS X Mavericks file.
Better be sure you straighten out those peculiarities on your system before you upgrade to Mavericks or you will likely find yourself with a botched system. Be sure to perform the EFI update before upgrading, too. Put all normal OS X applications and files where they belong. Otherwise, erase the drive first. (after the EFI update.)

concretedonkey, I'm glad you were able to take advantage of this offer when you ordered your new iPhone 6. I can certainly review your account to ensure this was added for you. Please reply to the direct message I have sent you.

On Pages, let's say you have two similar documents. Two versions of the same document, but not merged in Cloud and saved as two separate files. B ut you need to compare the two to see the differences, some things on one, but not in the other.  In Word, they would merge the two and differences would be highlighted in red.  Is there a way to do something like that?

Not actually in Pages, but there is third party software that purports to do this, google around.
