Will I wipe my ipod if I plug it into a new computer?

Hello
I hope someone is able to help me please.
I recently had to restore factory settings on my computer thanks to a nasty virus.
I have reinstalled Itunes (and added about 5 songs) but am now unsure what will happen if I plug my Ipod in?!?!
I dont want to lose the songs that I have on the Ipod. But obviously would like to add them back onto my computer (and if possible keep the 5 new songs as well)!
If anyone has any advice then I would be very thankful for any help that I receive.
Thank you.
Will

You will lose all the songs on the Nano if you attempt to sync.
Download Yamipod on your computer and transfer the songs on the Nano to the computer.
Also go and buy and external hard drive and start doing regular backups of your computer.

  • Will iTunes wipe my iPOD clean the first time I plug it in my new PC?

Just built a new PC. I want to download iTunes so i can get my iPOD setup on my new PC, but I want to make sure iTunes isn't going to completely wipe my iPOD when I plug it in.
If I simply download iTunes on my new PC, and plug my iPOD in will it recognize all the songs on my iPOD and create a library on the new PC? Or is there something I have to transfer from my old computer?
    Help.

"I want to make sure iTunes isn't going to completely wipe my iPOD when I plug it in"
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
"will it recognize all the songs on my iPOD and create a library on the new PC?
No it won't. You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod.
"Or is there something I have to transfer from my old computer?"
Yes, you need to transfer your existing songs from your old PC. There are a few things you could do to move them. You could network the two computers, use an external hard drive or even use your iPod to make the move. Have a look at this User Tip: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
If you can network the computers there is also this one: Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
Alternatively there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

I believe I need to set up manual update, rather than automatic to prevent this, but other than that, I am a bit lost.

Just what did you do to the computer?
It sounds like the iPodf is seening the iTunes libary as a new libary.

It is usually given as a communication error between Apple, iTunes (your computer), iPhone. Somewhere they are not communicating, so the iOS you are trying to install cannot be approved by Apple. Trouble shooting steps include, making sure you have Current iTunes installed, make sure your Hosts file of computer is not blocking Apple. Try restoring on another computer.

Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

Just note that the backup that iTunes makes does not incklude te apps themself, music, synced photos and some other stuff.  See:

After you transfer the stuff to the computer then make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and select backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup.  The restore will update the iPod.

  • I cant download new music to my ipod.  I am now using a new computer with Windows 8.

I cant download new music to my ipod.  I am now using a new computer with Windows 8.  Itunes is now on the new computer.  New songs apear there and will play on the computer.

I plugged my ipod into the computer, it "interacted" briefly, but when finished, the new songs were not on the ipod.  (It is an older ipod I have had for years).  I just read on a different post how to access the latest itunes program update.  I did that, then plugged the ipod into the computer again.  The ipod is now real busy interacting with the computer a lot longer.  Maybe that fixed it.  I will let you know after it is finished.  Thanks for the help!

  • How do I transfer the music content on my old IPOD (click wheel) to Itunes in my new computer for subsequent transfer to a new IPOD

How do I transfer music on my old IPOD( click wheel) to Itunes on my new computer(Windows 8) for further transfer to a new IPOD nano

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod onto your computer. And here is a guide about how to transfer iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

Is there any way for me to get my music off of my iPod? I had to get a new computer and no longer have my files, most of it is cds...

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    iOS: How to back up
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

  • HT4623 I upgraded my iphone to iOS 7 while away from home, and it tells me when I plug it into a new iTunes that the phone needs to be restored.  Because of lack of space I don't have all of my phone's info on iCloud, and I'm afraid I'll lose information

Anyway to go back? (I guess it's downloaded but not installed) I'm keeping my phone off, but not dure that will be enough.
    Thanks

The iPhone can only be synced with one iTunes on one computer. If you plug it into a new iTunes on a different computer it's going to ask to sync it to the new iTunes. So don't sync anything unless you want to lose your info.
Let me know if this helps.
