Will iBook G4 work without internal HDD?

I have searched, surfed, browsed, read and read... and more regarding my problem with my iBook... it seems I´m almost lost (without having to pay a couple of hundreds euros)...
Basically my iBook started to crash 2 weeks ago. In the beginning I thought it was the old 60Gb HDD... thus I bought a new 160Gb WD and a Firewire enclosure... plugged the new HDD and installed Mac OS X... then followed the ifixit instructions and replaced the old HDD for the new one. First boot went excellent! But...
Because there is always at least one BUT... the new HDD started to crash... same as the old one did... I got the intermitent forder / ? sign and the like... and worse the old 60Gb is running through the firewire case!!! I can boot and everything...
This only meant either the HDD orange ribbon is broken or the IDE Controller from the mainboard... my gutts tell me is the chip... (when pressing it, it works... and have tried out the "shim-thing" suggested somewhere on the net without any success)... nonetheless I ordered a new ribbon...
So the question: Can I remove the 160Gb and NOT install the old 60Gb... just leave it "empty", and still manage to use my iBook through the firewire connection with either of the HDD?
Thanks in advance

Richard... many thanks... trust me when I say that before posting I´ve been around a lot, including big part of the Discussions here... your thread was helpfull over the weekend when I tried it out, although with the ifix disassembly method... I tried just disassembling and reamsseblying verifying every connection and screw... then special focus on the orange ribbon (plus the previous)... and so on till the "shim" variation... it is clear that applying pressure which gave me some results...
Thus, discarding possibilities it is all down to the chip (described here http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/)... I do have a couple of friends with soldering skills and the corresponding equipment... I try to get them to doing what is described here: http://macintoshhowto.com/hardware/how-do-i-get-my-broken-g4-ibook-fixed.html
Nonetheless, will try out the orange connector exchange and see what happens, as I have already ordered it...
Yet, my question still holds: will the iBook work without an internal HDD and a firewire bootable HDD (external)?
Of course, I will let you know any news / update on what happens... It is a REAL SHAME, AS I LOVE MY iBOOK...

Can anyone out there help me. If I unregister my iphone 5 will it still work and will it still be able to receive and send iMessages? Will this mess up iTunes?

If you turn off iMessage, then you can't send or receive iMessages... in case that wasn't apparent.
The problem is the android users who did not turn off iMessage on their iPhones before they switched to something else.  They need to fix that. If they don't, then your only option is to turn off iMessage or forcibly send the messages as SMS messages.

  • Will cs6 programs work without creative cloud?

Hi.  I installed the master collection from a cs6 set of discs I purchased before creative cloud became big. If I'm not on creative cloud, like I don't get a subscription, can I still use these programs?  or will they stop working?

CS6 is set up to be the version to which you can fall back if you decide you don't want a cloud subscription.  They should work for as long as you need.

  • Will the iPad work WITHOUT first connecting to iTunes?

I picked up an iPad last week but I failed to realize that it wouldn't work with my current 10.4.11 version of OSX (G5 iMac - non intel) ... yes, I know, bonehead move.
While I"m searching for OSX 10.5, is it still possible to use the iPad without going through iTunes? I turned the iPad on but the iTunes connection illustration came up and I can't seem to bypass this component. If I connect it to the iMac a pop up window appears stating that it won't work with the current OS ... any suggestions or do I simply have to wait until I upgrade the OS?
    Thanks.

You are posting a problem that has extremely few documented cases, and specifically to you. This is not affecting 99% of the iPads out there, that is not a valid reason to say it is a fact. I have had my ipad since day one and not had an issue such as you are having. So have countless other people on these forums. Yes, you have an issue with YOUR iPad. This does not mean that it will happen to everyone else to the fact that they need to be informed falsely.
The primary objective of these discussions are to educate and inform user on how to fix problems they are having. Yesterday I learned something new about finder while I was helping them with an issue with the dock. Educating and informing does not mean posting about specific case issues as if they were wide-spread when based on the posts they are not.

The screen on my 2011 MacBook is broken but the unit works fine with an external display. If I remove the screen (as its an unsightly mess) will the unit still work?

    Hello Dazcon4,
Sorry i can't give you an answer because i'm having the same problem (my macbook's screen stopped working) i'm considering using an external monitor but i'm wondering if the macbook detects it automatically or do i need to set it up manually (how to do so given that we can't see what's on the macbook's screen ?)
What happens when you reboot the computer ? Does it start using the external monitor or do you need to set it up each time ?
Are you using an DVI or a VGA monitor ?
Sorry again for disrupting your topic !

    Thanks

Unfortuately you are stuck with the new but not as good and deficient Maps app. This issue has been discussed on many threads here. Do a search on this forum and maybe there is a post that can help you with your problem, which sounds as if it is due because the new Maps doesnt have the same extensive data as the old Google one does.
    Good luck.
PS you can still access Google maps from Safari by creating  home screen shortcut from the browser. Not perfect but it is a temprary solution.

  • IBook Dual USB (16 VRAM) not recognizing internal HDD, maybe not entire ATA

I've got a VERY old iBook (2001 dual USB I think, 'machine model' is 'PoweBook4.3'), which seemingly isn't recognizing it's own ATA bus.. Just this afternoon, I managed to connect it via Firewire target and back up the HDD (nothing important really), but now it won't even see it's own HDD, I can't boot from the internal CD/DVD drive (using the Tiger install DVD) using the 'C' key, but I can boot from an external Firewire DVD drive. But then the installer won't see the internal HDD, nor will Disk Utility see it. If I do 'ls /dev/d*', I get the following devices:
    disk0 disk0s1 disk0s2 disk0s3
    disk1
    disk2
    disk3
disk0 is the install DVD (on /Volumes). disk1 is on /private/var/tmp, which contains a bunch of Mount[0-9]{0-2] entries, a mds and a zBooterMnt directory. disk3 is on /private/var/run, which has a bunch of 'UNIX-looking' stuff 9syslog,syslog.pid,lookup.pid,installer.
I'm suspecting that either the battery that maintains the PRAM and/or NVRAM (shouldn't that not NEED a battery, being NV?) is hosed, or the NVRAM itself is, or something else entirely like the ATA bus, Power Manager chip, etc. The other day, sometimes it would recognize the HDD as a boot volume, sometimes not. If I reset the NVRAM (using openfirmware: reset-nvram), and then reset the Power Manager, that seemed to correct things..
BTW, this is my notorious 'machine from ****' - it has been repaired on AppleCare 7 or 8 times I think (logic board replaced multiple times, including that flaw in the video circuitry, replaced some other boards, etc, etc) - Apple has spent more than the combined cost of the machine and the Applecare on it. I'd like to use it as an MP3 server (and Newton development platform, which really does do better under OS9..), but if it won't even recognize it's own HDD..
Any ideas, or anybody want to buy it for parts (what parts still work that is - mind you, the display cable is a bit flaky TOO!)?
    Jim

Yeah, it is indeed a DVD ROM drive.
I did manage to get it to recognize the disk (don't know how though) - by opening the **** thing up (completely), disconnection the ATAPI cable from the TravelStar drive and motherboard, and then reseating everything and closing the book back up (without the EMI shield (the one that is over the main board that the Airport card sits on (there is no Airport Card there) - I hope that doesn't double as a heat sink..
I also recoved the "U bar" around the screen hinges, and cut a bit away from the bottom housing plastic, so the two sets of video cables (and backlight/LCD power) are just exposed now, and not crimped through that piece of metal, which was causing problems - blacklight blinking out) That doesns't seem to cause any problems, UNLESS that bar is a heat sink. (didn't ever feel particularly hot, but I know there's a heat pipe (I think it's a heat pipe) that runs up to that grill below the screen hinge opening).
The one thing I do notice is that the metal area right under where the Airport card would go, and just to the left of the RAM SODIMM is VERY hot (almost burns skin on 10s contact. Is that normal? Since it's normally right below the card, I'd think heat should be piped away somehow, and I'm wondering if the EMI shield usually conducts the heat somewhere else. I still have the shield so I can reinstall it if necessary. The fan is not running continuously either. I'm thinking maybe the shield conducts heat from where it's source over to the heat piipe that runs up to the hinge-grill and the fan?
I also managed to break the audio connector on the main board in the process (opps!), but what the **** if it has no internal audio - it was crappy anyway!

  • MBP 13" - Can't get any internal HDD's to work

    Hi there
I have a MBP 13", about 1.5 years old. For some reason I can't get any internal HDD to work in the computer. I'we tried 3 harddrives including the one that came with the computer and they all cause the computer to freeze.
I can though run the computer on an external hard drive without a problem. But it only works if there is no internal hard drive in the computer, otherwize it will freeze after a short while.
I'we tried reformating the hard drives, but it never works, the computer will always freeze after some while.
So it seems that there is something wrong with the internal mechanism of the computer. I have an appointment with a "Genious" tomorrow, but would love to hear some input from you guys on this malfunction before I go and talk to him.
Btw I'we tried resetting the pram, without any change.
To me it sounds like there is either a problem with the sata cable, or there is something wrong with the disk controller, which would probably mean that I need to change the motherboard. Luckily I think the computer is still under an applecare warranty.
    regards
    Frímann

  • Cannot install Windows to internal HDD on dm4t laptop (HDD is working, but not recognized in BIOS)

    Hi All,
I have an issue with the internal SATA HDD in my Pavilion dm4t laptop (PR #: XQ1313AAR). The drive is working, when connecting via external USB enclosure is recognized by the PC, can read/write data, format partitions etc… When plugged in as internal HDD of the laptop, BIOS does not recognize it. When booting from Windows Installation Disk, the drive (and its partitions) are recognized, but I get the following message when trying to select a partition to proceed with Windows install:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu.
Used external USB enclosure again, connected to a working PC and using TestDisk, I deleted the partition table (by zero writing it several times), then created a new MBR. When connecting back as internal drive, it is now recognized by BIOS and in the Windows installation screen, I can actually select a partition on the drive to install Windows on; the installation actually runs, but as soon as I get to the point of having to restart the PC during the installation process, upon restart the drive is not recognized anymore…
When I remove it, and repeat the same steps with TestDisk, it once again works, can start Windows installation, but it fails upon restart.
I have already read numerous forums on the topic, have tried various drive utilities. I also saw in one of the forums a suggestion to enable AHCI for the SATA controller, but the laptop BIOS is extremely limited and does not have that option.
Please help!!! Have been without a working laptop for several weeks and is driving me crazy. Saving any data on the drive is not needed – I have recovered all data from it that I need. So my only objective is to restore the harddrive to fully working state and be able to install OS on it (Windows 7, 64-bit)! Thanks in advance for any help!

    @minxinglee
even i am getting same errors I hope you found out solution by now ! plz... can u share it ! i need it urgently
    Thanks in advance

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro, I am trying to run MW3 but it will not work without crashing a few minuets into the game. The general specs on my computer are a dual processor 2.53 ghz. 4 gb ram and a NVIDIA geforce 9400 (9600 is the alternate card).
    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

  • I have a ibook G4 which has become redundant as my phone will no longer work with the version of itunes installed (latest it can use), how can I back up my phone to transfer to a new computer (a PC now)?

My iphone 4s (7.1.1) will no longer work with my ibook G4 which is running 10.5.8. I have a PC which i'm now going to have to use, I've manually transferred my music and photos, but how do I go about transferring my contacts and calenders. What does itunes on PC sync to in terms of contacts and calenders?
    Thanks!

    Hi there BDempster,
You may find the information in the articles below helpful.
iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer

iTunes 11 for Windows: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad

You can use iTunes to sync the contacts, calendars, notes, Safari bookmarks, and email account information on your computer with your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. iTunes also syncs this information from your device to your computer—for example, if you add contacts on your iPad, syncing adds those contacts to Windows address book or Outlook Express on your computer.

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • Will Xserve work without a rack?

Before I get all these rants about how stupid this question is let me preface it with a short story:
The owner of my company wants a new server. He asked me which I thought was better: tower or rack mount. I said that the PowerMac doesn't have the service warranty we would expect from a server, and as a desktop, is not really designed to run 24/7 the same way Xserve is. So we configured a new Xserve and it is in the process of being made. He then asked me the question: "will it work without a rack?" Being honest, I said "It would power on, but it's not recommended to run that way because it can't cool properly and it's not physically secure."
Now he tells me we aren't ordering a rack for this $6000 server. Can you please list all the reasons this is NOT going to work, so I can go back to him with a huge rebuttal? It just doesn't seem logical to me to not spend a few hundred dollars to properly secure this very expensive piece of equipment, and I don't have any fight left in me to come up with all the answers on my own.
    PowerBook G4 12" 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   5th Gen iPod Video, 1st Gen iPod Nano

    He then asked me
the question: "will it work without a rack?" Being
honest, I said "It would power on, but it's not
recommended to run that way because it can't cool
properly and it's not physically secure."
Speaking from my limited experience (18 months) with our Xserve G5: The Xserve does not need top and bottom venting; it cools front to back. A risk, though, will be that it gets shoved back against a wall and thus has poor airflow out the back, and you don't realize until you have done it what a mess of cables comes out the back and why you need the cable management arm (as aggravating as it is when you first use one) to manage the cables.
The Xserve is heavy. It's difficult to walk away with one. The enclosure lock will still work without a rack, but it's not real security anyway, just protection against the drives being bumped out by accident. But an unracked Xserve will be prone to injury and falling off a table, etc. They are BIG and HEAVY. The Intel Xserve is even longer than the Xserve G5 (look at the dimensions).
If the concern is the expense, well, you can build your own rack rather cheaply. I suggest Starcase (http://www.starcase.com), which lets you build a rack of any dimensions - you will probably want at least a 3U or 4U rack for your Xserve - 1U for the Xserve, 1U for a UPS (APC has a nice 1U 1000W UPS and a same-size 750W UPS), 1U for a tape drive and autoloader (you will need to back up all that data), and you might need another few rack units of height. The nice thing about the Starcase rack solution is that, as your rack height needs expand, you can simply get the four corner posts of greater height and grow your rack. Starcase also has side panels, top panels, etc. For custom-height solutions (rather than their pre-bundled standard sizes), see:
    http://www.starcase.com/customsteel_rackstore.htm
Check the Starcase prices so you can present your boss with a true picture of the cost. They are built like a tank. I STRONGLY advise that you put your Xserve in a rack; otherwise, it will be very difficult to service when the time comes - and you WILL need service, eventually.
However, note that the Xserve is NOISY. If the Xserve is going to be in an office environment, you will need an acoustical enclosure, such as the XRack Pro. See:
    http://www.xrackpro.com/
Very nice, very quiet, and a bit pricy.
    Hope this helps.
