Will iMac be efficient for Video Production Work Flow? PC to MAC switch.

Hi, I'm a long time Windows user editing in Sony Vegas for my video production work. I've been toying with the idea of seriously switching to Mac and Final Cut for about a year now. I may take the plunge this weekend. I don't think I want to go above $2k. I've been looking at the iMac 24inch, 2.8GHz model for a while now in the store, playing with footage. Nevetheless, I'm certainly nervous about making such a switch! I've been working with Sony Vegas for a couple of years now editing movies.
I do independent video production work, pretty seriously, but not for a huge movie house or anything. Will this iMac with Final Cut Studio work for me? Also should the fact that you can't upgrade specs on the iMac worry me? Will this computer be obsolete by next year.
I'm mainly interested in speed, efficient work flow, rendering times, etc. for video editing. Everything else I've seen on the mac I love.

hey there monaya & welcome to Discussions,
the iMac you're considering will certainly run FCS2. Tara Timpone edited "The TV Set", starring David Duchovny on her iMac @ home, see this: http://www.apple.com/pro/profiles/kasdan/
i still do some editing on a 17" imac G4 w/ 512 MB, RAM(top of the line 5 1/2 years ago) & it shows no sign of not doing what need. it won't run FCS 2, but i'm still rolling on the home video to DVD part of my video biz w/ it-so it just got repurposed & has been online wirelessly for most of that time(so i can check e-mail, listen to radio for a break). it will run previous versions of FCE, which is how i got into using a pro-style editing app.
render speed will depend on footage format/codec, FX & transitions, RAM, etc..., but once you get used to the suite, establish a workflow, keyboard & interface layout that works for you, you should be okay.
good luck.

  • Upgrading PowerMac G4 to the MAX for video production?????

I need to know if I can just upgrade my Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics) to the max for video production? I'll be using 4 main programs.
    1. Final Cut Studio 2
    2. After Affects
    3. Protools
    4. Photoshop CS 3
Final Cut recommends this for all applications:
    * 2GB of RAM when working with compressed HD and uncompressed SD sources
    * 4GB of RAM when working with uncompressed HD sources
    Here are my computer stats:
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 450 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 768 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 3.2.2f1
Can anyone please help? This is my first mac.

    Hey DJ,
I'm thinking that, for those specific needs, dollars are better thrown at a newer model than upgrades for your existing one. Here's why:
    1) You do not have native support for large hard drives, something that's nice for video work. You'd have to spend money on a PCI adaptor card to add that support. Figure US$40-100.
    2) Your video card is likely not up to the task unless it's already been upgraded. Another $70-250 depending on how good a scrounger you are.
    3) You need a minimum 1.25Ghz G4 processor and, if you get the upgrade, who's to say if the next version of FC will still support a G4? 1.2G processor upgrades start at over $200 and faster ones are up to $700 (OWC pricing for new gear).
    4) You can't stick more than 2G RAM in your computer.
And, after all the upgrades, you still have the basic bus speed limitation inherent in all G4s.
Bottom line is that you can quickly invest enough to buy a faster used Mac. Examples of used G5 prices (usually at the top of the price scale) are here. Even an entry level G5 should be much faster than a fully upgraded G4.
Don't get me wrong--I'm an upgrader and love to do it regardless of cost. In this case, I see the potential for ending up with an upgraded computer that struggles at its intended task and could be obsoleted by the next upgrade of the software.

  • The best MacBook for video production

    Hello,
I want to start working on video production (from camera shooting to video editing and compositing).
As a first step, mobility is very important, so I want to know what is the best MacBook to start with (best price/performance ratio)?
Also is Final Cut Studio package all I need for video production?
    Thanks!

Have you ever worked with video before?
What software do you intend to use? What formats will you acquire, edit, output?
Do you intend to make money from this or is it a hobby?
If you intend to make money from your efforts, do you have a capitalization plan and have you talked to your banker? Do you have a business plan in place that has been vetted by knowledgeable people?
Head down to your local library and pull anything you can find in the business section regarding starting a small business then read what ever you can get your hands on about video production. Then, walk over to the public access channel and sign up for one of their "intro to video" sessions.
Honestly, the speed of the laptop is the least of your concerns.
On the other hand, if this is just a way to play, purchase whatever you want.

  • Will a Serial Number for Photoshop CS5 Work for CS5 Extended?

    Hello,
I've recently subscribed to Photoshop CS5 and Dreamweaver CS5.5. In my Order History, it says 'Photoshop CS5', not 'Photoshop CS5 Extended'. However the download links in my Order History does not work (yes, I do have Adobe Download Assistant--in fact, I used it to download Dreamweaver CS5.5 without any problems).
So, I decided to download the trial version instead and enter my serial number that way. However, the problem is that I see Photoshop CS5 on Adobe's Products page, yet when I click on it, it leads me to Photoshop CS5 Extended.
I don't want to waste my time downloading CS5 Extended, only to find out that my serial number for CS5 does not work on it. So my question is: Will a Serial Number for Photoshop CS5 work for Photoshop CS5 Extended?
    Thank you for your time!
    -Mari

    Resolved!
For anyone else having the same problem: I contacted Adobe via phone, and they said that a serial number for Photoshop CS5 will work with Photoshop CS5 Extended.

  • Motion tracking is not working for videos but works for images?

Motion tracking is not working for videos but works for images. When the videos is drop onto the tracking object the videos corner don't appear highlighted. I am working on windows 7 with version 13.1.

Are you within 30 days of purchase for the Premiere Elements 13? And, did you purchase as a download from Adobe? If so, you can
apply for a return/refund for 13. If you purchased elsewhere, then you would be governed by the return/refund policy of the seller.
Adobe no longer sells version 12, so you would have to find a vendor who still has it in stock and purchase it. There is no way to "downgrade"
    13 to 12.
What you may want to do is to download and install the Premiere Elements 12 tryout from the following web site to verify that 12 Motion
Tracking works for you; whereas 13 cannot with regard to use of video for the Motion Tracking source media.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Direct Download Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Direct Download Links, Premiere too | ProDesignTools
Apparently this web site does not sell the tryout. It just makes it available for use.
Before I posted my reply to you I looked at Motion Tracking with video source media on both Premiere Elements 12/12.1 and 13/13.1 on the same Windows 7 64 bit computer.
If any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Will my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless work with the new Mac OS Lion

Will my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless work with the new Mac OS Lion

My experience with upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion is that the OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless will print just fine, although it seems to take a little longer to find the printer on the network. My scan function however locks up and will not work. This really is an annoyance, though, since I have VueScan, which works fine with Lion.
Hopefully, Apple and HP will not orphan the OS native scanning feature for HP multifunction printers.

  • Critique my W530 Build for Post-Production Work

    Hi everyone!
Please critique the following W530 build for post-production use. Primary applications in use are After Effects, Photoshop, Maya, Boujou, PFTrack, Mocha Pro. Was highly considering the Macbook Pro 15" Retina and the HP Ultrabook. But seems the Thinkpad has the best performance/price ratio in a decently portable form factor. Switching from the Mac side so guidance would be much appreciated!
    Purchasing from Lenovo online store:
CPU - Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)
GPU - NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
    RAM - 8 GB DDR3 - 1600MHz (2 DIMM)
    HDD - 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    Optical Drive - DVD Recordable
    Total - $1,663.78
    Buying separately:
512GB Samsung 830 Series SSD (Will replace with 500GB 7200rpm Drive)
Add 180GB SSD or 1TB 7200 RPM HD in Optical drive
Add 16 to 32 GB of RAM
    My questions:
Will it be possible for me to do as I've said above (install a Samsung 830 series 512 GB as my Primary disk in place of the 500GB my laptop will ship with?
Can I put another SSD or a full TB with atleast 7200RPM in place of the DVD Recordable optical drive?
I want to upgrade the RAM to 16 or maybe even 32GB for excellent AE/Premiere performance. What clock freq RAM do you suggest/does it matter? If I want 32GB in total, how much should I get from Lenovo and which RAM do you suggest I add.
Any other suggestions on improving this build? Other brands you would recommend looking into?

My build and final specs I've gone with for a similair configuration (heavy VM use, some video editing, some 3D CAD/CAM work in SketchUp and older games like TF2).
    As Shipped:
CPU - Intel Core i7-3720QM ($200 for less than 5% performance improvement from the 3820 isn't worth it)
GPU - K2000M (Twice the CUDA, worth it, newer video editors take full advantage)
    RAM - 4GB RAM shipped
HDD - 320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive (See notes below for the trick)
    Bay - Blank Travel Bezel
    Upgrades:
    RAM - 32GB DDR3 1600Mhz PC12800 from G.Skill
HDD - 240GB Mushkin Atlas mSATA SSD main boot drive, ~200MB/second random read/write worst-case
    HDD - Software RAID-0 Dual 1TB Western Digital AV-25 hard drives, ~200MB/second sequential read/write
They've closed this loophole when I just checked, but you WERE previously able to order a W530 w/ a minimal 5400RPM low-power 320GB hard drive and NO CD/DVD drive (which but $180 off the price) by adding, then removing, the hardware RAID option.
The dual 1TB drives can push 200MB/second easily for sequential throughput when rendering or playing through video, and the SSD can keep up for random read/write as a scratch drive. I will recommend ONLY allocating 200GB of the SSD so there's extra redundancy, that's what I did at least.
But honestly, the 3820 isn't worth the $200 premium for 3.7Ghz versus 3.6Ghz CPU speed, spend that on the graphics card and/or buying the RAM and/or an SSD later.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to know how to activate your workflow after transport ?
Normally, the status of a workflow is included in your transport (if I'm not mistaken)
So activate/deactivate in your dev-system and transport it..

  • Macbook Pro vs iMac for video production

Hello - I need to invest in a new system for production of HD videos, typically music videos less than 4-mins, which make heavy use of Premier Pro and Effects. The priority is real-time editing and fast rendering.
I had more or less settled on the following:
15 inch Macbook Pro with retina display, 2.8Ghz i7 processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD drive, and Intel Iris Pro Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory. I can get this with an education discount for just under £2000.
Then I started wondering... is this the best option? Is there a better iMac option for the same price? Portability is not an issue.
Any help from people in the know very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

Video editing is best with the best/fastest processor you can afford and loads of RAM - 32 GB - (which you can install yourself later at a much lower price), so you can compare the machines you are considering to see what the benchmarks are (google benchmark tests). Remember though: even a Mac Pro will still take time - video editing/rendering is a massive processor intensive task - it will not be instantaneous.  If you are into heavy editing, etc I would seriously consider a Mac Pro.
As for transfers, if your camera uses an SD card, I'd consider using a USB card reader (or a built in reader if there is one) - it'll be just as fast and save the camera battery.

  • Will a double-wide PCIe video card work with my iMac?

I have a 24-inch Aluminum iMac and plan on doing some serious gaming with it on Windows XP.
    1. If I were to buy a graphics card, such as the soon-to-come 9800 GTX, would it fit?
    2. What currently available NVIDIA GeForce 8800 and 9800 cards are Mac compatible?
    3. Would it void my warranty if I switched it out myself?
    4. Could I get a Genius at the Apple Store to put it in for me?

There are no solutions that are going to give you better graphics performance than the graphics processor built into your iMac. Any external solution for driving a display would have to connect via USB or Firewire, either of which would be significantly slower than the onboard video.
Sorry, but if you want better graphics performance, you'll have to buy a different computer.
Note, though, that adding RAM to your system (your profile says that you only have 1GB) will offer improvements in overall performance and is highly recommended if you intend to run Windows, either via Boot Camp or a virtualization solution (most especially the latter).

  • Best Practices: iPad/MacBookPro synching for video production in education

My organization just bought 14 Macbook Pros and 14 iPads Minis. Our goal is to have students in single-day classes use the iPads to film something, then synch/export the video to a MacBook Pro where they can then edit that video in iMovies. Once that single-day class is over, all of the video will (likely) be deleted and new students come in a couple days later and start fresh. I'm trying to figure out the best practices for this to make it as painless as possible for all involved.
So, matching AppleIDs for each pair? One AppleID for all devices and manual synch through iTunes? Dropbox/cloud synching instead of iTunes?
All of these devices are brand new. I have already started prepping the MacBook Pros, but have not even turned on the iPads since I'm not sure which AppleID I should attach to the iPads -- I assume the first AppleID on an iPad will accept the iLife apps much the same way they do on the MacBook Pros.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jack

well the most important fact to accept is that ALL DRIVES WILL FAIL.  It's just a matter of when.  I can tell you about a nightmare situation with g-drives (before Hitachi bought them).   What format are you shooting?  If you shoot on tape, you can always recapture as long as you captured with abort clips on dropped frames on make new clip on timecode break are enabled.  But that's gonna take "real time."  If you shot on a chip based format, backing up the chips in multiple places (and I mean multiple) can provide a sense of security.  But if you need to be able to get back to work immediately if you have a drive fail, having a back up of your media or if you've stored it on a redundant raid is crucial.  I also seriously recommended having a clone of your startup drive so if your startup (boot) drive fails, you can get back to work quickly.

  • Is the new iMac really faster for video coding?

I recently bought the new Imac 27 inches, 3.2 GHz. I mainly need this speed to edit and to code my bluray movies from African safaries journeys
Until last year use an 2008 iMac. Editing was fine but coding was very long (up to 6 hours for 40' with the best performace parameters und 2 passes)- I use Adobe Première.
With my new Imac editing is more convenient but coding ist not much shorter (up to 5 hours 30' for 40' with the same parameters). I was exepecting a much shorter coding time. What the purpose of  nice marketing specs like high speed und turbo boost if they cannot really be applied in specific applications like video coding.
    Or am I mistaken?
    Regards
    Patrice

    Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.
    http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/10/big-imac-news-less-heft-more-kepler/
So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...
