Will Image Capture do this?

I've been doing some web searching for an answer to this but have yet to discover anything encouraging. So here's my question/problem:
I have a nice photo table with a stable crane like rig on the back (Imagine a camera mounted directly overhead looking down at the subject) - perfect for my needs of product photography. The only problem is no matter what camera I use, I cannot see what I'm doing when the camera is mounted on the vertical crane rig - especially when it's high up. So, is there a software/hardware solution that will allow me to operate the camera remotely from my mac? More simply put, allow me to connect to a remote monitor and/or capture images directly to the computer? I've been out of the photography arena for a while now and don't know what's available these days. It makes sense to me to bypass capturing to the camera's internal memory and go straight to my hard drive, which is where it will end up anyways. Are there cameras that will allow me to do this? Will image capture allow me to do this?
Thanks all!

Well, just to give you an update, I have decided it is time to buy a new camera. I went and got a powershot A710, and returned it immediately as it did not offer the remote capture option nor did image capture "take a picture." So I tried a PowerShot A630 and ran into the same problem.
The funny thing is, both cameras come with the remote capture software but it fails to work with those models. Confusing, but that was the answer I got from the canon technical support and it sounds as if they are phasing out that function for mac users. Very disappointing as I think it is the most powerful feature on their old cameras!
So, I returned that camera and have now ordered a S3 IS. I have been confirmed by Canon that this model will support remote capture on mac OS X but have yet to receive it via mail. So if anyone else is looking for this feature in their next purchase, please contact the manufacture first to see if it is possible. It is well worth the hassle of talking to an uneducated mac tech guy. Hope this helps future users and will post my results with the new camera when it arrives.
thanks for everyones help.

  • When will Image Capture work with my Nikon D90?

    Hi,
I'm just interesting in seeing some concrete info on when Image Capture will work with my Nikon D90 camera. Lightroom 3 is having problems, but that's probably because the image capture firmware is not working in OSX Lion yet.
    Regards,

Image Capture in LIon is version 6.1 which is an update from the 6.0 in Snow Leopard. Contact the vendors and see when they will have updates compatible to Lion.

  • Will FCP capture with this?

will a Sony GV-D300 Video walkman capture with FCP on leopard?
    http://www.freetradephoto.com/SonyGV-D300Videowalkman.htm

I've had similar problems with short duration (less than 10 mins) DVDs from HDV from a JVC camera and H264 from Canon HD DSLR edited in Apple ProRes SQ.
After much mucking about with settings, and I'm not absolutely sure why this works I found the best results were obtained by first of Exporting a Quicktime from FCP with same settings.
Bring this version into Compressor, use the "DVD Best Quality 90 mins" setting but change the settings to "One Pass VBR Best". You can raise the "Average bit rate" slightly but don't play with the maximum bit rate, this can cause problems with some DVD players, and not necessarily the one you are using for testing.
Get yourself some re-writeable DVD-RWs for testing.
For me the results of using these settings on short duration DVD productions are enormous, the 2 Pass created results comparable to VHS quality. It was more like cooking and trying different herbs and spices to flavour the meal. Don't get me started on compression and delivery for the web...

  • Scan with Image Capture freezes OS

Since I updated to Mavericks the system freezes when I scan in Image Capture.
This occurs with two different scanners, a Epson Perfection V30 and a Lexmark X364dw.
When I start the scan in Image Capture it seems to work. Then Image Capture shows the message "Saving picture [name of the picture], page 1" and freezes the whole Computer. Only the mouse pointer can be moved.
I only can do a force shut down by pressing the on-button for 6 seconds.
This occurs since I changed to Mavericks. With OS X 10.7 and 10.8 I never had any problem.
My Computer is a MacBook Pro 5,1 (late 2008) with 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, all drivers and software is up to date, the scanner drivers for the Epson and the Lexmark devices are up to date (came on software update). The freeze occurs randomly and happens with the scanner connected via USB cable and also via WLAN.
Of course I tried all things crossed my mind, like repairing permissions, deleting preferences of Image Capture, reset PRAM, but this didn't solve the problem.
The HDD has 425 GB of free space. The files I tried to capture with Image Capture are text documents I wanted to scan with 600 dpi b/w into a PDF file.
Now I'm out of any idea what else I can do and hope to get an advice or a hint here.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Matthias

This issue is very recent, and problably linked to 10.9.2. I scan a lot of documents, and I would have noticed a computer freeze with 10.9.1
I will try with another user, but I need more time for that.

  • TS1394 image capture for Snow Leopard

Which version of Image Capture should be in Snow Leopard Mac OS-X 10.6.8
When my wife attempts to run Image Capture 3.0.3 on her system (her Imac cannot be upgraded to Lion unfortunately)  is unable to run.
The error message is:  You cannot use this version of the applciation Image Capture with this version of Mac OS-X.
Is there anyone out there who knows which version should be on her system please.
    Raymond

For 10.6.8, Image Capture is version 6.0.1
What your going to need to do is backup personal data off the machine and disconnect the drive.
Pull out the 10.6.3 disk used to upgrade from 10.5 with, there is a bundled installer for programs, run that and see if that will update Image Capture.
If not then your going to need to hold c or option key down to boot from the disk and install 10.6.3 over itself, it also installs the bundled programs.
Reboot and immediately Software Update until clear, that will update OSX and bundled software to current versions.
Some third party software won't function after this, they will have to be reinstalled and updated.
You might also have other issues with that machine

  • IMAGE CAPTURE "against" IPHOTO ..

Who is using IMAGE CAPTURE, and not IPHOTO capture? Can you explain the main difference, advantage..etc
I had a trial with Lightroom found it great, bought it, should arrive soon, and I am also working with Photoshop.
What is the point for me to use IPhoto?
Which is the most "secure"( I want to load,to save without wondering if I am going to get" ! and a grey square"!
I don't really need the editing in I Photo...)? (My impression at this point is that IPhoto brought a lot of trouble...)...Thanks...

    Hello, florence,
I think you are getting the wrong idea about iPhoto. It is a great application that can make working with your photos easier. Most of us don't have problems with it. The discussions are for those who do have problems, so you will get a skewed idea of its trouble if you base your decision on what you find here.
iPhoto is a database application that lets you organize, arrange, edit, print and store your photos.
Image Capture is an application that you can utilize to download your photos in an organized manner to make it easier to import your photos into iPhoto.
I use Image Capture when I download photos from my husband's camera. He seems to leave old photos on his memory sticks forever. I don't want iPhoto to take the time to try to import all the photos I already have. So, I have Image Capture 'read' them, make thumbnails, and I select which ones I want to import and download them into a folder. I name the folder what I want the film roll to be and then drag the folder into iPhoto. I also want to keep my movie clips from my digital camera separately in their own folder, and Image Capture does this easily.
That said, if you don't want/need to edit in iPhoto, maybe you would prefer to use iViewMedia Pro. iViewMediaPro
It is more robust than iPhoto, has more options for maintaining titles/keywords when moving files. Old Toad, an iPhoto guru, prefers to keep his photos in iView and use iPhoto just for creating slideshows, cards and books. He explains it very well here

  • Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture from Snapseed app?

Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture? This is farcical and a real problem having to email them individually to myself and is totally inefficient time wise compared to previously using image capture! Why change this when it was working well and very quickly until the latest change. Now I have to move files from downloads into an appropriate folder, after emailing each individual edited image to myself, then I have to open in Photoshop and rename the file. This is ludicrous and takes forever to do!

Thank you! I suppected it would be in the settings somewhere. I' ve much to learn...get myself into trouble pushing buttons I don't really understand.

  • Image capture no longer works? ios5/10.7.2

    Hi
I can no longer see my photos in image capture. This is iOS5/Mac OS X 10.7.2. It just shows up blank.
I really do not want to use iPhoto (dislike strongly, as it manages photos for me, which I do not want to do), and I also do not want to use iCloud, due to various bugs reported by me a few days ago with calendaring.
I strictly want to use image capture to pull the photos off my phone.
    Please assist.

I've managed to get it working after trying the following:
    1. Used Disk Utility to repair permissions on my main drive
    2. In Terminal used the comand "sudo mdutil -v -i on /"
That tells spotlight to turn indexing on for that drive.
    3. Did a restart
I'd recommend trying the permissions and a restart first and if that doesn't help then try the command line fix.
The first time I ran it without -v so got no feedback on what it was doing. Stopping it and trying to do it again gave me the message "Error: Index is already changing state.  Please try again in a moment." After the restart it now says:
    Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2011-10-19 07:40:10 +0100 (60 seconds ago), reasoning: 'scan not required - avoided catchup scan'
Now mail is back to how it was before the 10.7.2 update, happy days.

  • Image capture cannot detect Epson 10000XL over network.

I have an Epson Expression 10000XL scanner with an ethernet card, connected to an Airport Express, and then wirelessly to my iMac. The Epson Scan application detects the scanner and allows scanning to take place, but Image Capture does not detect the scanner.  How do I also get Image Capture to detect my scanner wirelessly?  Thank you.

As promised, I called Apple this morning, and they said that Epson (not Apple) was responsible for providing the drivers for their scanners.  Since I can connect my iMac and Epson scanner to all of my scanning applications through a USB connection, and can only connect wirelessly to Epson Scan, it follows that Epson provides only a driver to connect with their proprietary Epson Scan and no drivers for connecting to other scanning software, including Image Capture.
This looks like the end of my efforts to connect wirelessly to Image Capture.  Thanks for your help, PAHU.

  • I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.

I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week, Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.
The file name has no special character in it, just letters and no spaces.
I have done this in the past and it has worked, but now it will not.
I have not upgraded any software, that I am aware of.
After scanning, the Image Capture pops up the Scan Results with the file name in the window, but neither the Scan Results nor the Image Capture window responds to inputs.  The Image Capture window is frozen, with only the "Overview" and "Cancel" buttons active (but non-responsive).
Is this a software issue or a scanner hardware issue?  I am using a HP Photosmart C6200 series printer/scanner on a network using a Time Capsule airport.
    Thanks.

    I had the same problem.
Got a 90% fix.  Apparently the Mavericks preferences won't work with Yosemite, so I just deleted the Image Capture preferences.
Unfortunately, the "Scan to" folder seems to be permanently set to the Pictures folder.
    1.  Quit Image Capture
    2.  Go to Finder > Go > Home, which opens up your home folder (named after your user name)
    3.  Open Library > Preferences > com.apple.ImageCapture.plist - Drag this file to the Trash
    4.  Start "Image Capture", click "Details" and change all your settings as you prefer
    5.  Quit and restart "Image Capture".   Notice it remembers all your settings except "Scan to" folder.  It insists on saving to "Pictures".
That's as far as I was successful.  I tried changing the "Scan to" folder to "Desktop", but on launch, Image Capture always sets it back to "Pictures".
    This is what I tried:
    6.  Download and install "Pref Setter" from http://www.nightproductions.net/prefsetter.html
    7.  Quit "Image Capture".  Right-click on "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist" and open with Pref Setter.
    8.  Search for "Pictures", which finds "~/Pictures" (the tilde character at the start means your home directory).
    9.  Double-click on "~/Pictures" and change it to the folder you prefer.  I like "~/Desktop"
    10. Choose File > Save then Quit from Pref Setter.  Note that re-opening the plist file still shows "~/Desktop"
    11. Start up "Image Capture" -- on startup, "Image Capture" sets "Scan to" folder to "Pictures"
    I consider this a bug.

  • HT3669 My Epson Perfection 1200 scanner functions as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimet

Epson Perfection 1200 scanner continues to function as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies/film negs the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimeters. All the communications seem to recognise the scanner and the mode for the intended scan but the necessary overview scan is not completed, nothing comes up on the Image Capture scan window. If I unplug the film adaptor I can get a document scan. When I plug in the adaptor again the Image Capture details change which allows me to select the type of scan required but when the scanner attempts an overview scan it is unable to complete it.
I have had the scanner from new (12 Years) and have previously scanned slides and film with the adaptor but maybe this was before I upgraded my computer (imac 27").
Do I have to buy a new scanner?  It seems so close to working correctly.
I have downloaded the Epson recommended driver (5.4) and have Epson Perfection 1200 6.6 Universal showing in the Applications List.
Any thoughts or observations would be much appreciated before I go out and spend money an new hardware.
    Thanks

I have same issue - have you solved this yet?

  • TS3195 since installing ios7 on my ipad I can no longer import photos to my Mac using Image Capture or even Preview. The device appears in the device list, but no photos appear. Anyone have a solution for this? Is it another glitch in ios7?

Hi - I just dowloaded io7 to to my mini ipad and now cannot upload the photos on it to my Mac - which I was able to do with the old system, and still can do with my old first generation Ipad. Very annoying. The device appears in the list in Image Capture and Preview, but no photos appear. Is there a way around this? It is the quickest and best way of transferring photos from a mobile device to the computer - but has iOS 7 messed this up???

Hi I have figured it out on my own just today coz what apple suggested didn't help much so I just have to do it by myself.
This is what you need to do:
open your computer and search for autoplay, it will open rightaway and then scroll down look for your device then change "ask everything" to "import photos and videos in windows" connect your ipad again then tthe import box will open.. and your good!
i hope this will help you. Good luck! :-)

  • My iMac will no longer import .jpg files.  With either iPhoto or image capture

Can someone tell me why iPhoto and Image Capture say that .jpg is no longer a supported format.  I've imported hundreds of photos from my camera before and now I can't.  I noticed this after I had placed the SD card in my Panasonic Viera TV to view the photos.  Is it possible that the TV screwed up the formating on the SD card?  I'm still able to view them on the camera, but unable to import them.

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem does not repeat itself in the test library then your current library is the culprit.
If that's the case try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HT4505 can you scan 4x6 photos using Image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo. I have to crop the photo once it is scanned

Can you scan multiple 4x6 photos using image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo? I seem to have to crop each photo once it is scanned.

    How long is a string?
The answer depends on a large number of variables
Cropping removes the area cropped off so the pixel size of a cropped photos is smaller than an upcropped one
With iPhoto you can always revert ot the original so if the new quality is not enough for your use you can go back to the uncropped original
    size - many meanings
DPI - simple - Dots Per Inch - the number of dots (pixels) in a dimension divided by the number of inches of the display(print) - very simple math
Pixels and dots are the same for this discussion
so if a photo is shot in a 3:2 ratio (6x4 is also a 3:2 ratio) then the photo is the shape of a 4x6 photo with no cropping - is a photo shot in a 4:3 ratio is cropped to a 4:6 ratio (which is also a 3:2 ratio) then some information is going to be removed - assuming that you set the cropping frame as large as possible in one direction and only crop two sides then you lose the minimum amount of information
Most iPhoto uses of photos are designed aroung 4:3 photos so in general I would only recommend cropping 4:3 photos if you want to print them in standard print sizes
iPhoto slide shows will work best with 4:3 photos so cropping to 4:6 would be a mistake

  • Adding old scanner where Image Capture will see it

I have an CanoScan N1220U flatbed scanner. Canon does not have driver software for this scanner for Intel Macs. I have downloaded a plugin for the scanner that was written for Power PC system X Macs, and I've put it in Photoshop's plugins folder. I can use it to scan with Photoshop provided I run PS in Rosetta mode. Is there some place in the system where I can put another copy of that driver (it's not a TWAIN driver) so that Image Capture will see it and use it? If so, will I have to run Image Capture in Rosetta mode, or can it automatically deal with parts in Rosetta mode, as some programs allegedly can?

Your 1220 was designed when the Mac was system 7, running at 40 Mhz. and a large hard drive was anything over 150 MB. If you are scanning paper, buy a new epson all in one. I trashed my D660U canoscan because it took forever with very limited internal memory. can you spell recycle?
