Will Imovie 08 allow me to edit video from a hard drive based video camera?

I'm a new mac user, a recent convert from a PC. I love it!
I've read and heard conflicting information about hard drive based video recorders. I currently use a tape system and it gets on my nerves. I never re-use the saved taped info and usually overwrite the tapes anyway.
I would really like to buy a hard drive based recorder because I like the idea of not having to spend 2 hours importing a 2 hour video. But I've heard that on my new mac that I would not be able to edit the video once I've imported it. I've heard that marketing material reads that imovie "supports hdd video" but that this means it will import only, no editing.
Where can I find out what is correct? Any advice?
Thanks.

Actually editing your imported content from a HDD camera is not a problem at all. Importing it in the first place seems to cause one or two problems for some, but providing you get a compatible camera you should have no problem at all. I have a Sony HDR-SR8 and have no problems at all with imovie, whichever camera you are considering just make sure it works with imovie. Post your choices on these forums and someone with the same camera will share their experience with you.

Use iPhoto. What's the problem with iPhoto import? It's a two clicks job. Select your device and click import.

  • My new iMac will not allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives - what can I do?!

I just purchased the new late 2013 iMac 27" and all is wonderful except it will NOT allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives which is a HUGE problem because I'm a professional photographer & I won't be able to access my images unless I can sort this out.  I know I can purchase a new giant hard drive but i'd prefer not to because I have about 12 TB of data which will be expensive & time consuming to transfer & I'd also prefer not to have that much info tied into one device.  Ultimately I will need to get a Drive with multiple bays but I'd really like a short term solution that works for the drives I currently have.  Any help is GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!!

Why can't you daisy chain your drives. If it's because the iMac only has a Thunderbolt port and you have Firewire drivers purchase the Thunderport to Firewire adaptor from Apple: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • IMovie Cannot Import MTS or MT2S From Any Hard Drive

Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro. Considering an upgrade from iMovie 8.0.6 but I don't know that it will solve the serious deficiency I have been experiencing. I have a AVCHD Lite Panasonic Lumix camera that produces MTS files (or MT2S after passing through Panasonic's Photo Fun Studio application). iMovie 8.0.6 can import MTS directly from the camera's SanDisk medium. However, if I copy the exact same file(s) to the Mac or to an external hard drive, iMovie can no longer import the files (file names are darkened). Same problem with the MT2S files. Needless to say, this renders iMovie and my MacBook completely useless for a large part of what I want to do. Anybody have any ideas? Will an iMovie upgrade solve this problem or do I REALLY have to wrestle with some kind of third party translation software to get these MTS and MT2S fles into a format that Apple can deal with?

Nobody else has replied so I'll add my two cents.  I just bought a Panasonic FZ150 which will save video in AVCHD/mts or mp4.  My first videos were saved in AVCHD because I didn't know any better.  I have iMovie '11 (9.0.4) with which I am slowly coming to grips.  After searching for several days and trying every conceivable parameter in ffmpegX, I tried Handbrake and it converts and scales just peachy.  Then I noticed that iMovie was asking to import my mts files.  After tinkering with it a little bit, I let it import them (not archive them because you will get a copy of the whole SD card and anything on it).  It imports them and converts them to mov files quite nicely into an event or project of your choosing.
I also have iMovie HD and FC Express but have not tried to import mts into them.
Bottom line:  Try Handbrake to convert mts if you don't have iMovie 11.  Or let iMovie 11 do it for you if that's what you have.

From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
•You MUST use an account with Administrator Privileges to run Premiere Elements
•(Doing Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 [says Encore and also for "All" versions of Premiere] will sometimes fix "odd" errors)
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.1 update)
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.9.4"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?

  • Exported videos to external hard drive, now videos will play? in .mov mode

    Hi,
I bought a WD My Passport for MAC.  I exported all of my videos (I still have the videos iPhoto, they aren't deleted yet.) into the external hard drive.  All my videos are in .mov format, and will not play on my computer when I click to play.  It shows that there is 0:00 time and will not play.
Am I supposed to reformat my videos to another file extension? Getting confused and scared, because I bought this hard drive intially for my videos and if they aren't playing, not sure what I am supposed to do, did I just waste $100?
    HELP!

Okay, I tried to export -> Original Kind and it seems to have worked!
I played back the original video, and it opened up quicktime and played exactly the entire video!
You may have saved me from lots of lost videos, THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!
I am definitely going to note this for future exporting of videos!

  • How do I Play videos from external hard drive on Apple TV2?  Can I just move the iTunes Library to the External Hard Drive?

I have several HD videos stored on an external hard drive and would like to bring them into iTunes and play them via iTunes on my Apple TV2, but I am not sure how to go about it.  I don't want to store the movies on my iMac hard drive because it would eat up to much space...so do I just move the iTunes Library to the external hard drive?  And, if so...will the Apple TV2 find the iTunes Library on the external hard drive?  Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

iTunes content on an external drive isn't a problem.
The simplest method is to just move your library to an external drive.
If you wanted to keep just movies on an external drive, that's a little more difficult. You'd need to put the movies where you want them to reside on the external drive and add drag and drop them onto iTunes while holding down the option key. Obviously any movies already in iTunes would need moving from their current location and removing from iTunes first.

  • Importing video from Sony Hard Drive Camcorder to Powerbook G4 17"

After some work, I have found that I must use both QuickTime and MPegStreamclip to import both video and sound. However, once the transfer is complete I notice in playback that when the suject moves quickly the edges appear jagged and unclear around the body movement. How can I correct this?
The camcorder does not use firewire only USB transfer or AV. The video is beautiful except for this.
Camcorder: Sony DCR-SR100 30gb Hard drive
    Powerbook: G4 17" 1.5GHz, 1gb ddr sddram
    Someone please help.
    Powerbook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The only thing that I can think of is purchasing a video capture box such as a Formac Studio DV and plugging the camcorder into the Formac using AV output cables and then importing through the Formac's firewire port. Does that make sense?

  • How to setup firefox to play training videos from my hard drive

I have never watched videos, period.
I recently purchased some training videos, they are supposed to work in any browser.
They are SWF videos, I can play them on my SWF player.
They have a menu system when using browser that allows you to go from 1 video to another, or to a specif portion of any video.
My first guess would be to do it off line, but I have about 30 tabbed web pages open all the time.
I am also using Oracle VM, have 32 bit VISTA, and 32bit ubuntu setup on it.
I use firefox in Vista as IE8 crashes all the time.
So I have many options on how to do this if I knew how!!

Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.

  • My Macbook Pro, After a while, will not allow me to write to the internal hard drive.

I have recently had the same problem over and over again and the only way to fix it is to restart.
After some time using my computer it all of a sudden begins to stop letting me write to the hard drive.
It does not let me open disk utility or most prefrence options.
several times i did a permission repair and a verify disk it did not help.
I reformated my hard drive and the problem still persists i also changed the hard drive.
If this is a sofware problem then it should have been eradicated when i reformated and installed the new operating system.
I have also changed the hard drive so it is unlikely that It would have anything to do with the hard drive.
    what else could it be?

    bill_001 asked:
if it is not the sata cable then what else could it be?
I have no idea - as I've said, you've already tried all the options that I would try - even up to replacing the HD. I would try OWC for a new SATA cable - http://eshop.macsales.com/. Call or email them with your model and they should be able to suggest the correct cable.

  • I am having trouble with downloading videos from my Sony HDR-XR160 video camera. iMovie doesnt open up when i connect the camcorder. any suggesions?

i am having trouble with downloading videos from my Sony HDR-XR160 video camera. iMovie doesnt open up when i connect the camcorder. any suggesions?

Looking up your camera online, I found it is capable of 1920 x 1080 Full HD 60p Recording. It's the 60p (60 frames per second Progressive) that's the problem I think. iMovie '11 will do 60i (Interlaced). You might need to convert it from the format the camera currently uses into another format to get it into iMovie. Read more about it on this link here: How to import 60p footage From that message thread comes the recommendation to use ClipWrap to convert the camera's video clips now that they are in 60p:

Use ClipWrap to rewrap to QuickTime. Import the files. Edit in either 59.94 or 29.97. The latter if you want to use the high frame rate for slomo

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • I have a lot of HD video on my hard drive that I eventually want to edit in iMovie, but just don't have the time now.  It is clogging up the computer, though.  How do I take the Hd clips off Mac for later editing?

I have a lot of HD video on my hard drive that I eventually want to edit in iMovie, but just don't have the time now.  It is clogging up the computer, though.  How do I take the Hd clips off Mac for later editing?

    See "Storage drive" here
    Most commonly used backup methods
Th problem with HD video is it needs a fast external interface, so you should pick a external drive that uses the fastest interface your computer has to offer.
Performance rank fastest to slowest is
    Thunderbolt, USB3, (newer Mac's)
    Firewire 800, USB 2, Firewire 400, USB 1 (older Mac's)
    Newer Windows PC's have USB3, older one's USB 2,1.
You need to format the drive if it comes FAT which a lot do, as FAT has a 4GB file size limit, so this won't work with large HD video files.
So if your  going to use the drive only with a Mac, then head to Utlities > Disk Utility and format it Options: GUID Format: OS X Extended Journaled. (select the drive makers name and click Partition tab)
If your going to use the external drive with a PC, take it to the oldest PC you have and right click and format exFAT.
If you have a Windows XP machine and there is no exFAT, it can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.
