Will InDesign CS 5.5 open my PageMaker 7.0 Files?

I currenly own Pagemaker 6.5 with an upgrade to 7.0, as well as InDesign CS PageMaker Edition. I am unable to open my PageMaker files (either version) in the InDesign, running on either an XP SP3 computer (which I understand is not surprising) or on a Win7 64 computer. I get a message (for every file): "The PageMaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered." This is true of any of dozens of files I have tried to access.
If I update to the latest InDesign CS 5.5, will I then be able to open my PM files to save them as ID files? Should I upgrade from the ID license or the PM7 license?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated, what was told to you by “salesperson Vincent” is absolutely untrue!!
As long as you purchase your Adobe software from an authorized dealer and Amazon itself (not necessary its “associates” who often also sell via Amazon) is an authorized Adobe dealer, you have the same support from Adobe as if you bought if from either Adobe's website or via Adobe's customer support / inside sales organizations.
If you were to have any further identification of who “Vincent” is, we'd appreciate having that information (send to me via e-mail - hover your cursor over my photo to get that address) so that he may be appropriately retrained.

  • Will Indesign CC (9.0) open Indesign CC (2014) files

    If so, great, if not, where can I download a back copy. My office hasn't upgraded and adding 2014 to the mix right now is not optimal.

    You will likely get better program help in a program forum InDesign
    The Cloud forum is not about using individual programs
    The Cloud forum is about the Cloud as a delivery & install process

  • How to open a Pagemaker 6.0 file now?

    I have to open a file made in Pagemaker 6.0 long ago. I tried to install Page maker 7.0 (the only available version of Page maker these days), but it doesn't work - when starting the program a missing plugin stops starting and the program shuts down. Even the TRY version from Adobe.com does the same.
    I use Indesign cs3 for making books now, but i have to see this file in order to proceed with my work.... Do you have any solution for me?

    Indesign doesnt open Page maker 6 files :((
    that's why i tried using 7.0 but... OH! IT DID IT!
    Thank you very much ! I seem to have lost my head while wondering with this files.. THANKS :)))))))

  • InDesign CS4 fails to open PageMaker 6.5 files correctly

    After upgrading to InDesign CS4 this week, I attempted to open a PageMaker 6.5 file. It opened, but the pages were out of sequence. PageMaker 6.5 pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., opened in InDesign CS4 as pages 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, etc.
    I purchased InDesign CS4 last week for the sole purpose of working on two books I created in PageMaker 6.5. For me, at present InDesign CS4 is useless. I hope Adobe provides a fix soon.
    Also the upgrade rejected my PageMaker 6.5 serial number, I tried all the fixes at the Adobe website, finally after half an hour on the phone I was given a challenge/response code which then launched InDesign. If I need to reinstall InDesign, I'll have to go through the challenge response process again, i.e. another long wait on the support line.
    I'm using OS 10.5.5 on the newest, unibody PowerBook Pro.

    From the help files:
    Flow text semi-automatically
    With a loaded text icon, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) a page or frame.
    The text flows one column at a time, as in manual flow, but the loaded text icon automatically reloads after each column is placed.
    Flow text automatically
    With the loaded text icon displayed, hold down Shift as you do one of the following:
    Click the loaded text icon in a column to create a frame the width of that column. InDesign creates new text frames and new document pages until all text is added to the document.
    Click inside a text frame that is based on a master text frame. The text autoflows into the document page frame and generates new pages as needed, using the master frames attributes. (See About masters, stacking order, and layers.)
    Flow text automatically without adding pages
    With a loaded text icon, hold down Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS).

  • How do I open a PageMaker document in InDesign CS5?

    When I try to open a PageMaker document with InDesign CS5 (Mac OSX 10.7.5) I get an error message that it "Cannot Open file.... Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format might be missing, or the file may be open in another application."  It's certainly not open in another application anywhere, It is, indeed, a PageMaker document which is supposed to be supported.  Before updating to current Mac OS, I used to be able to easily open this file with an old copy of PageMaker, but that no longer works on this OS!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Mike,
         I found another copy of this file on my laptop and I think it might not be broken.  When I try to open it in text edit or Mellel, I get a much larger document with much of the material I know is supposed to be there.  Would you be open to giving it one last shot?  The new dropbox link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/12eqa6hh6tlse89/New%20Kabbalat%20Shabbat%20CBH (which, I know, looks like the old one, but I deleted that file and just uploaded this one).
         If you can open and save it (possible saving it in PM 6.5 or some other form I can than open with InDesign, or just sending me a pdf, I'd be very grateful.
         You can reach me at hlzeitlin AT aya DOT yale DOT edu.  As thanks, enjoy the music on this link, https://www.dropbox.com/s/h1zix2ukzyt8ags/STE-90610-047.wav.

  • Open old Pagemaker pmd files in CC Indesign

    How can I open Pagemaker files with pmd extension in CC Indesign?  I'm using Windows 7.

    If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, you can download Creative Suite 6. It can open Pagemaker 6.x files.
    Go to the Creative Cloud desktop application. In the list of Apps, there is a menu called Filters & Versions. Choose Previous Versions to download CS6.

  • Will InDesign open my Quark files?

    Q: Will InDesign open my Quark files?
    A: InDesign can open Quark 3 and 4 files. Quark encrypted version 5 and 6 files just so InDesign can't open them. If you can back save these newer Quark files to version 4 they can be opened by InDesign.
    If you don't have all versions of Quark to backsave to version 4, Markwarz Q2ID (QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign) offers users a quick and easy way to convert QuarkXPress content into a new Adobe InDesign document.

    Dave, can this be made sticky?

    An EPS caution for imported XPress docs
    InDesign 3 (CS1) has a bug that was never fixed which turns on the non-printing attribute for random EPS graphics in an imported XPress doc. You can spot these graphics in Overprint Preview mode and you can use the Attributes palette to fix them individually. Dave Saunders also wrote a nice script that will turn off the Non-Printing Attribute for every graphic in the document (ie, make *everything* print).
    //DESCRIPTION: Uncheck ALL nonprinting attributes checkboxes
    //Script Author: Dave Saunders
    if (app.documents.length != 0) {
    myGraphs = app.activeDocument.allGraphics;
    myLim = myGraphs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myGraphs[i].nonprinting = false
    myPIs = app.activeDocument.allPageItems;
    myLim = myPIs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myPIs[i].nonprinting = false
    Theoretically, this bug has been fixed in ID4.

  • Will I be able to open InDesign CS6 files from the latest CC version?

    Considering Cloud purchase and want to check compatibility. Will I be able to open InDesign CS6 files from the latest CC version? Thanks for any advice on this.

    You can open files in CC from CS6 and earlier.
    Due to updates to the text engines you might notice a text reflow - note that text won't reflow until it's interacted with.

  • How can I convert Pagemaker 7.0 file to InDesign CS5.5?

    I have problem with open pagemaker file to InDesign CS5.5. Before I was using PageMaker 7.0. Now I have InDesign CS5.5 & tried to convert my old file to InDesign. But I am having problem to convert. When I convert Pagemaker File, all text looks uncleare and unredable. I can't edit text and tables. Below is a image after converting from pagemaker.

    Start by reading the InDesign Help section on opening PageMaker files.  It suggests some steps to do IN PAGEMAKER BEFORE you do the conversion:
    •If the PageMaker file or its linked graphics are located on a network server, floppy disk, or removable drive, it may not open as expected if an interruption in data transfer occurs. To prevent data transfer problems, copy documents and their links to the hard disk, preferably in the same folder where the PageMaker publication is stored, before opening them in InDesign.
    •You may want to use Save As in PageMaker to clear unnecessary hidden data.
    •To ensure that all links are maintained, copy all linked files to the same folder where the PageMaker publication is stored.
    •Make sure that all necessary fonts are available in InDesign.
    •Repair broken graphics links in the PageMaker publication.
    •If you have a problem converting a large PageMaker document, convert portions of the PageMaker file separately to isolate the problem.

  • InDesign CS5 won't open in CS4

    Upgraded to CS5 InDesign and I was happy with it untill I tried to open some work on CS4 at a clients office and both my printers who run CS4 can no longer seem to open any of my packaged file that I send them, Am I doing something wrong, or is there no longer any backwards compatability, I have noticed that CS5 came with alot of Extentions preinstalled 50% of which seem to be locked. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    thanks
    Edit i may have jumped the gun I'm testing a .idml file on CS4 but it's just crashed ID 5 time in a row so....

    There has NEVER been that sort of backward compatibility.
    As always, if you want to open the file in a previous version you must export to interchange format, which for CS5 is .idml. The .idml file can be opened in CS4, but it isn't likely to be perfect, so this is a very poor way to send things to print. There are significant new features which will be lost if used, and differences in the text engines which will cause youtr text to be recomposed, possibly changing line endings which can make oversets or other problems.
    Whay not send the printer a press-ready PDF instead?

  • Can't open Pagemaker 6.5 files in ID CS2 - Vista

    I was running ID CS2 on a Windows XP Pro system and had no problems opening Pagemaker 6.5 files. That system recently suffered a processor demise that affected the motherboard and forced me to start over with a new system that's now running Vista Home Premium. All of the programs I use loaded fine on Vista except Pagemaker 6.5. When I try to load it, I get a message saying it's not compatible. So I thought, OK, I'll simply open the Pagemaker files in In Design as I've done in the past and resave them. However, every file I've attempted to open gives me an error message saying the files are damaged and can't be opened. I know none of the files are damaged because I'd recently opened many of the same files in Pagemaker before the other system crashed. BTW, all of the Pagemaker files are on external drives so couldn't have been affected by the crash.
    Any ideas how I can get around this?
    DC

    Thanks, Bob. I have another issue that I can't find any specifics on in the forum.
    Do you know why Arial Narrow fonts aren't available in the InDesign or Photoshop font list? I've always used these fonts with no problems in XP Pro, but since going to Vista, they don't show up. They're listed in the Windows font folder. The only one that shows up in InDesign and Photoshop is Arial regular. Arial Narrow shows up and is available in Word and other programs but not Adobe.

  • Indesign CS3 won't open

    My Indesign CS3 suddenly started giving me problems when I tried to open it. I have used it for a year or so with no problem. Now, when I click to open the program, I get the moving donut (on Vista) that indicates processing is taking place, but after about 5 or so seconds, it just disappears and there is no further response from the computer. If I repeat this it will sometimes open (I have had it happen after about 5 to 30 attempts) and then the program runs fine.
    I discovered, however, that each time I click to open, a process is started (taking up about 11 MB of RAM (but no application appears in the Windows Task Manager). After mutiple attempts at trying to open the program it starts to run out of RAM and I have to close some of the processes to continue.
    Does anyone have an idea what is happening and how I might overcome it? All the other modules in my CS3 suite run fine. I'm running Vista Ultimate with full updates and CS3 V 5.0.4.

    Hi Matt,
    I'm sorry, but I haven't got a fix. I declined the suggestion to do a System Restore since I don't want to spend the time (and risk the possibility of other problems occurring) without a more convincing diagnosis. I have been burned by such suggestions in the past when trying options without a good account of why it might help.
    My current work-around is to keep trying to open by repeating the double-click on the Indesign icon until it opens. This means double-clicking, then waiting a while, and if it doesn't open, repeating it until it does. After InDesign (finally) opens, I open the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), go to the 'processes' tab, search for all the Indesign processes that are NOT the one that is open then stop each of them one by one. You can tell which are the ones that are not open since their indication of memory is around 11K and it is unchanging. The open program takes up more memory than that and it changes.
    Sometimes I have had to try to open Indesign with more than 30 tries, but eventually it opens. I have found that lately it opens after only 1 to 5 tries.
    I'm surprised that they haven't diagnosed this problem yet - and set up a fix, but until this happens I guess I will continue this way until something more dependable comes up.

  • Opening A 44 page PDF file in Indesign

    Hi Guys
    I am trying to open a 44 page PDF file in Indesign but for me reason it will not not allow me to do so. It says that i may be missing a plug in o the pdf may be open elswhere. The pdf is not open so i am assuming that the plug in is missing for ths. Does anyone know a way round this as i will be unable to purchase any plug ins uness of course if they are free.
    i look forward to your responces.
    Phil

    Even with the plugin Bob mentioned, no program will ever truly be able
    to open a PDF and get everything out of it that was used to make it. PDF
    is an end product, not a universally editable format.
    If you want to be able to edit your 44 page PDF, you have three choices:
    1) Get the ID source file (or whatever source file) the PDF was made
    from. PDFs can be made by any program that can print, so it wasn't
    necessarily made in Indesign.
    2) Rebuild a source file by using Acrobat to export RTF and graphics
    from the PDF. You'll get formatting (not necessarily 100% accurate) but
    not styles.
    3) Rebuild a source file using PDF2ID. I haven't used PDF2ID, so I can't
    vouch for it, but it sounds like it streamlines the process of doing it
    yourself. Again, you'll get formatting (and layout, apparently), but it
    can't know about the styles that were used to make the original document.

  • Indesign CS5 documents not opening

    Recently, I had issues with my MacBook and had to reinstallled the operating system. After that my WD Passport would not read on my desktop and so I had to backup all files on it and erase the whole thing. Once I did this some of my InDesign files will no longer open up. The files that won't open are all in one file, so other files on my external will open up also.
    Message: Cannot open the files "en_brochure.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, of the file may be open in another application.

    That's real, real bad. The file is totally empty -- all of its contents are just zeroes.
    This file is lost forever, I'm afraid ...
