Will Indesign CS3 read CS4 files?

If I install CS4 on my Intel based laptop and produce files on that computer in Indesign, can I move them to my older desktop that has CS3 installed and be able to open the files?

If you have CS3 then you should already know the answer to this. No version of InDesign has ever been able to open InDesign files from a later version. Starting with CS2 you could export an INX file which could be opened by the previous version. Text might reflow and any features not in the older version would not be available in the converted file. It is not a good way to work, switching back and forth between two versions with the same document.

    yes, newer versions can open older files.

  • Will InDesign open my Quark files?

    Q: Will InDesign open my Quark files?
    A: InDesign can open Quark 3 and 4 files. Quark encrypted version 5 and 6 files just so InDesign can't open them. If you can back save these newer Quark files to version 4 they can be opened by InDesign.
    If you don't have all versions of Quark to backsave to version 4, Markwarz Q2ID (QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign) offers users a quick and easy way to convert QuarkXPress content into a new Adobe InDesign document.

    Dave, can this be made sticky?

    An EPS caution for imported XPress docs
    InDesign 3 (CS1) has a bug that was never fixed which turns on the non-printing attribute for random EPS graphics in an imported XPress doc. You can spot these graphics in Overprint Preview mode and you can use the Attributes palette to fix them individually. Dave Saunders also wrote a nice script that will turn off the Non-Printing Attribute for every graphic in the document (ie, make *everything* print).
    //DESCRIPTION: Uncheck ALL nonprinting attributes checkboxes
    //Script Author: Dave Saunders
    if (app.documents.length != 0) {
    myGraphs = app.activeDocument.allGraphics;
    myLim = myGraphs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myGraphs[i].nonprinting = false
    myPIs = app.activeDocument.allPageItems;
    myLim = myPIs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myPIs[i].nonprinting = false
    Theoretically, this bug has been fixed in ID4.

  • Will InDesign CS3 export to PDF on it's own?

    I am planning to purchase InDesign CS3 but do not have Adobe Acrobat Pro.  Will I still be able to print or export an InDesign file to pdf without it?  If not can I buy PDF Converter Professional to make this possible?  I am working on a PC.  thank you!

    Indesign has it's own PDF generator so you wouldn't need Acrobat to create a simple PDF.
    If you want to create fillable forms then you will need Acrobat.
    One thing to keep in mind, CS3 is a few versions expired and is not being sold legally anywhere (unless someone is selling their personal copy and hasn't used it to upgrade to a newer version). You'll want to be sure you are getting a ligitimate version.

  • Working with InDesign CS3 and CS4

    I'm a graphic design student and recently bought InDesign CS4 for my home computer, but all the media labs on campus only have CS3. Is there a way I can constantly work on one file, switching from one version to the other? I heard there's a way to save CS4 as a CS3 file, but will a CS3 file open in CS4?

    CS4 will open a CS3 file. To go the other way, export from CS4 to INX.
    CS3 (if fully patched) will open INX from CS4. Don't use CS4-only
    features, and expect to run into some problems with text wrap changing.

  • InDesign CS3 wants a file it already has

    InDesign CS3 has begun quitting on startup, saying it's missing the file /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Type Support/Unicode/Mappings/Adobe/Mac/ROMAN.TXT — but it's not. The file is there, right where it's supposed to be. What gives? I've relaunched, restarted, reinstalled; nothing's working.

  • InDesign CS3 placing Illustrator files as PDF's

    I am working from a PC that doesn't have Illustrator installed (which is unbelievably frustrating on its own). I have a graphic that I created in Illustrator on another computer that I am trying to import to InDesign, and I need to edit it. Since I don't have access to Illustrator, I'm hoping to be able to do so right in InDesign. The file is just a straight Ai file, not a pdf, yet no matter how I try to work around it, when I place the file in InDesign, it reads it as a PDF file. I've included a couple images below to illustrate.
    I ensured in preferences that "Prefer PDF" is not selected, as well.
    It's not crazy important that I do it right this moment, as I could just change it in Illustrator at home. However, I'm going to be working on this project for a while at this computer, and that "fix" is going to get real old, real fast. I'd appreciate your suggestions, and what I could be doing wrong?

    AI files by default are saved with PDF compatibility. ID only looks at
    the PDF portion of the AI file.
    If you were to save without PDF compatibility, you would be unable to
    place the file in InDesign.

  • Will iTunes 11 read FLAC files?

    I have a large library that I have recently ripped direcly to my Meridian Sooloos System. It exports in FLAC. Will the new iTunes read .FLAC files so I do not have to convert all of them to ALAC?

    Correction: FLAC is 99% of the time a higher quality than MP3. FLAC bitrates vary from 700 to 1300 kbps in my experience, while MP3's max bitrate is 320kbps. Lossless audio starts at appr. 700kbps, and only lossless containers support lossless audio (listed below):
    .wv: WavPack
    .flac: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec, most widely used)
    .m4a: ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) (not all m4a's are lossless, as they can contain lossy or similar quality to MP3's)
    .ape: Monkey's Audio Lossless
    .tta: True Audio Lossless
    .tak: Tom's Lossless Audio Kompressor
    .wav: Raw Audio (Largest size)
    The larger the audio file for the same number of minutes (meaning both files are the same time length), the better the quality. Thus, raw audio (WAV) is generally the largest.
    There are rules however. You cannot "up-convert", that is convert a lower quality audio (eg: MP3) to a higher quality (eg: lossless). This is literally impossible. When a CD is ripped into MP3, large amounts of audio data is lost (usually in frequencies not many can hear). The benefit is that the file is smaller.
    If you want to get FLACs or other lossless files into iTunes, the only current way (to my knowledge) is converting the lossless files to ALAC, and then importing to iTunes. FLACtunes can do this for you, and works for the latest iTunes, I believe.
    If you don't want to purchase the app, you can get one of the free apps, X Lossless Decoder or xACT, and convert the files manually, then import them into iTunes.
    Personally, I hate iTunes for its interface (although I admit, the new interface is an improvement to my liking). If you don't have an iPod you use (like me), I recommend Banshee. It's not my favorite Media Player from Linux, and it's in beta for Mac (no compiling required, thank goodness), but all the features I use are bug-free, and work for me. Plus, the interface is very clean. (Oh, and Last.FM support )
    I would use Amarok, my favorite media player from Linux, but getting any version to run in Mac OS X 10.6+ is a pain with MacPorts. I prefer 1.4 version prior to 2.0+, and I can't even get started to compile (and I'm a Linux-guru!). It seems kde3 is not built for Snow Leopard+ in MacPorts. However, I am currently almost finished getting Amarok 2 install with MacPorts (with a few google-fu fixes). Hopefully it will be good to go soon.
    Edit: If you use Windows, and want to convert the music, I highly recommend dBpoweramp Music Converter for its accurate conversion. However, if you don't want to pay, I recommend SUPER. It has a semi-clunky interface, but it is free and the best full-featured conversion for audio that you can get for that price. (I don't recommend it for video conversion, as it tends to cause tearing with video. I recommend HandBrake for that.)

  • InDesign CS4 or CS5 will not open my CS4 file

    Please help! I have a large file for a newsletter I have been working on that suddenley refuses to open. I have been using CS4 and didn't have any problems until all of the sudden I just get a box saying "cannot open "name of file". I tried in CS5 on my home computer, won't open. I created it at work in CS4. I have no idea what to do. I can open the file from 3 days ago on my back-up drive, but every back-up'ed filed between then and now gives me this error. The error just happened yeaterday. I have lost 3 full days of work. Can anybody help me? This is a 44 page newsletter.
    Computer info:
    Model Name:    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:    Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:    3 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    2
      Total Number Of Cores:    8
      L2 Cache (per processor):    12 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
    My computer at home is a mac dual core also and it didnt work there either.

    Thanks. yes, I typically duplicate the file and delete everything I don't want. I have been using InDesign for years but I never got into using templates. I will look into them after this is finished. It just figures it would happen right at the worst time.
    This is a new contract and this is the second newsletter I have ever done. I duplicated it from the first one I did last quarter, but the first one I duplicated from a copy that was given to me by the company that handled it before mine and I have no idea if they did that too of what platform/version they worked from.
    I have already started fixing everything. I basically went back to my first draft version. I was ready to turn it over for final approval today. I luckly have a pdf that I exported on my last draft because I typically save drafts with _ver2 etc as PDF as I work and submit them for edits.
    PS...I have another newsletter I do that I have been duplicating for years, it has probably been duplicated 10 or more times. I'm not working on that one now, but I am not duplicating it again. I never even thought about it getting messed up from this habit.

  • Can Elements 7 read CS4 file formats  ?

    If CS4 has been used to capture HD and develop in-progress sequences (with basic video and audio transitions) and thus Premiere Pro project files *.prproj can they be imported/read by Elements 7 for further work (e.g. on another computer by someone else)?
    For basic video editing tasks, if CS4 formats can be imported/read in Elements 7 are there any specific aspects that may get lost or cause issues (and what are these)?
    And can I assume that the reverse, importing/reading Elements 7 file formats in CS4 is possible and fully transferable.
    Windows XP SP3
    2GB RAM

    Unfortunately, my tests between PrP and PrE were for earlier version:
    PrP2 & PrE4.
    What I found was that PrP2 could Open PrE4 Projects, with only a few glitches. PrE4 yielded an error, "This Project was Done in PrP2. Use That Program to Open This File."
    These were simple Projects, with only a few Titles, Transitions and very limited Effects. There were no Themes, etc. used.
    In PrP2, there were a few things that did not translate from PrE4. One Tilte had animation and text on a Path. These did not come in.
    The PrP2 Project was even less involved, but nothing would Import.
    As Steve says, the Assets will translate well between the two NLE's, but editing work will possibly be limited in one direction, but nothing will Import in the other.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Differences between CS3 and CS4 files?

    Could you please explain what was the differences between "Adobe illustrator cs4 eps files" and "Adobe illustrator cs3 eps files"?
    Thank for looking into this.

    The difference would be that CS 4 would support the features in AI CS 4 and CS 3 would not support those features.

  • [CS4] Porting plugin from Indesign CS3 to CS4 c++ linking error

    I am hoping to upgrade our current plugin to the latest version of Indesign CS4.
    I've downloaded and unpacked the new Indesign CS4 SDK and have read the porting guide.  I've not seen anything obvious relating to this issue.
    This is using Visual Studios 2005 SP1 with InDesignCS4ProductsSDK_Build578.
    It appears that through the headers that I don't end up with any compile issues.  However in linking my current project is unable to find just a couple of external symbols.

    Ian,  Thanks.  That did solve the K2Vector problems.
    Are you aware of which .tpp covers the PMMatrix class?  That would probably make this linking error:

  • (Windows) InDesign CS3 and CS4 plugins

    Hello everyone:
       I have a number of plugins that must be maintained for IDCS3 and IDCS4--we still have customers that send in work for those versions.  Their projects compile and the results test out just fine in Windows XP, but if I port the projects over to Win7 the plugins don't even show up under the Plugins dropdown.
       In the past that has usually meant a resource issue.  I've checked the resources and they seem fine.
       In the past I could ignore the problem and continue to maintain them on XP, but with the official demise of that stalwart OS coming screaming toward us, that is no longer an option.  I need to resolve this matter.  Does anyone have any thoughts on why CS3/4 Win plugins will not correctly compile on Win7 computers--or what the real problem may be (including a PEBKAC    )?

    It seems that some of the dll's or libraries are missing on your windows 7 machine. I would suggest you to check for dependencies that the plugin has, and see if they are missing. I would suggest using a tool like dependency walker.
    Thanks,
    -Manan
