Will infected flash drive infect my mac?

Hi all,
I wasn't sure where to post this....I have a PC running XP that was infected with a nasty redirect/rootkit virus. I was running Norton AV & Malwarebytes but it didn't help & I can't get rid of the thing. After a week of trying, I gave up & disconnected from the internet & copied my photos & a few other files to a flash drive. Question 1: is the flash drive now infected? Question 2: If it is infected, would it transfer the virus to my macbook if I tried to transfer my pictures? I figure the PC is a goner, I just want to save my photos & a few other things.
Thanks for any help!

1: Likely infected.
2:  Not likely to infect the Mac, unless your Mac is running Windows® like through Boot Camp.
3: "in my world combofix.exe is very usefull.... in addition to malwarebytes. many things seem to have rootkits on em and malwarebytes wont get em."
"Malwarebytes got it 99% of the way, Security Essentials pushed it over the edge, into a ditch, covered it in diesel, and lit it on fire."

  • Clear default usb flash drive selection on mac os x?

    Hey ,
I'm using a VMWARE program and running Windows 7 on my macbook .
The first time i connected my usb flashdrive , the windows system was running and i got a pop up asking me if i want to open the new drive using windows 7 or mac os X , i choose the Windows and checked the "always use this choice".
Now i can only use my flash drive on the Mac OS.
Any why to clear the default selection and use the flash drive with my Windows 7 system ?
    Thanks !

You will be able to open it if you make it a .iso
image. There is software available for both OSes to
open and browse/modify a .iso image file. I do not
know how well any of them use passwords for the
    images.
    Maybe it's winiso
What I would recommend is using Winrar
(http://www.rarlabs.com/) and just using a compresses
and encrypted file that both OS's can manipulate.
With winrar you create an archive and then each time you want to edit a file you have to extract it, modify it and then reinsert it in the archive.
What I was looking for is something more user friendly.
Images created with mac, protected with a password, are ok but are not compatible with windows.

You don't.  There is the Camera Connection Kit, which let's you download pictures to your iPad via SD card, but the reverse is not a standard feature of iPad.  The best method would be to connect your iPad to your computer and transfer the pictures to your computer via iTunes.

  • How to format a flash drive on my mac book pro

I have a mac book pro, but at school they just use PC's. I need to be able to save my homework on my flash drive at home and bring it into class and open it up on the PC. The programs I am using are the Adobe Creative Suite (photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, etc.) and they will let you go back and forth between the mac and the PC. The problem is that I used my flash drive to save my homework, no problem, but after a while it didn't work anymore.
I was told at school, I needed format my flash drive(when it was new) on my mac and then it would be fine to go back and forth. My old flash drive that is messed up, they said just to re-format it on the mac and then it would be fine. How do you do either of those things? Sorry this is so wordy.

Does the older flash drive work on a PC still, cec? If not it may simply be defective. Flash drives can live a hard life!
You shouldn't need to reformat your new stick. I very much doubt that the failure of the old one has anything at all to do with the fact that it wasn't formatted on a Mac .
What OS are you using, by the way? Your various posts seem to say different things.
Just by the way many smaller/older memory sticks will be formatted as FAT-16 rather than FAT-32. Disk Utility , from memory , will actually automatically do this if the drive is under a certain size.
    see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileAllocationTable#Future :
+FAT is still the normal file system for removable media (with the exception of CDs and DVDs), with FAT12 used on floppies, and FAT16 on most other removable media (such as flash memory cards for digital cameras and USB flash drives). Most removable media are not yet large enough to benefit from FAT32, although some larger flash drives, like SDHC, do make use of it. FAT16 is used on these drives for reasons of compatibility and size overhead.+

  • Flash drive works on Mac but not PC

I got this new flash drive. It's a generic brand. The first thing I did was plugged it into my iMac, saved a few files, and renamed the drive. However, when I plug it into a PC, essentiallly any version of Windows, it won't show up. On Windows XP, it'll try to recognize it when I first put it into the port, then it'll say that it failed to recognize it. After that, it just won't bother with it anymore. On Windows 7 Ultimate, it does nothing. Haven't tried Vista.
I thought that it was a problem with the Windows OS, so I tried looking for the drive in Disk Management. It just doesn't show up at all, anywhere. Plugging it into a Windows is like doing nothing.
It works perfectly fine on Mac, it reads, writes, copies, everything. So I reformatted the drive with Disk Utility using FAT32, even partitioned it, all MS-DOS. I actually did this several times and tried plugging it into both the XP and 7, but still nothing happens. I just don't understand what could possibly be wrong with it.
I saw reviews on it and every single person says they have had no problem with it on their PC. One even said it works just fine between PC and Mac.
Is mine just defective or is there something I haven't done?

Your flash drive needs to be formatted to be in FAT32 format. That is the file structure that is compatible with both Windows PC's and Macs. (If you formatted it for a Mac and it's "Journaled" then it will ONLY work on Macs.)
But to be able to do this, you have to erase the entire Flash drive and start over. So you will need to back up your files somewhere else first.
Here is a link to eHow that takes you through the steps:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_5929724_format-drive-work-mac-pc.html
I have had many issues with flash drives being incompatible in Windows 7. You might need to manually upgrade the flash drive's drivers or visit the manufacturer's website for troubleshooting issues with Windows 7. If you formatted the drive to FAT32 already, and it works on the Mac, then this is no long a "Mac issue". Your time would be better spent in the manufacturer's support forums. (or a Windows 7 support forum)

  • Issues re: using SanDisk Cruzer Mini flash drives on a Mac

Given some strange behavior, I'm wondering whether SanDisk Cruzer Mini flash drives cause known problems when used with Macs.
    Two problems I've had:
    1. Not being able to re-save edited Word documents back to the flash drive without first renaming those files. If I try to re-save a document in the normal way (i.e., by just clicking 'Save' to overwrite the existing version on the drive) I get error messages about 'permissions.'
    2. Getting 'insufficient disk space' error messages when trying to save to the flash drive, even though according to Get Info the flash drive still has plenty of space left.
Also, does completely wiping a flash drive using 'zero disk' (in Disk Utility or other programs) work exactly the same on a flash drive as on a hard drive?
    Thanks.

It would seem SanDisk Cruzers and Macs have some compatibility problems. You are the second person with problems in two days. I'm not sure why you should have the problems you describe as USB flash drives should just work. I can suggest you try repartitioning and formatting the drive for the Mac rather than using the FAT32 format that usually is how the flash drives come from the factory. Try the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This may help, but if you plan to use the flash drive on a Windows machine, then you will need to restore it to the FAT32 format.
And, yes, zeroing the disk works the same on flash drives as on hard drives.

  • USB flash drive security on mac and windows

    Hi
I've got an USB flash drive and I would like to secure it so that data on it will not be accessible unless a password is provided.
The point is that I need to use it on both my macbook with tiger OS and on another PC with windows XP.
The USB flash drive is a sandisk cruzer titanium that comes with U3. Originally I was using an U3 protection that asks for a password when the flash drive is plugged in.
U3 is not supported by MAC so I had to disable the password protection to use it on my brand new macbook.
    Appreciate any help

  • USB FLASH DRIVE WORKS ON MAC BUT NOT ON WINDOWS... CAUSE I ERASED IT IN MAC

I decided to take my work flash drive home to work on a file. At home I saw that some weird files were on the flash drive and wouldn't delete, so I decided to save my files on my Mac and erase the USB flash drive. I selected the flash drive (by the way it's a 2 GB flashdrive) and I used the SECURITY OPTION 35 PASS ERRASE. Format: MS-DOS (FAT).
Everything was fine until I took my flash drive to work and plugged it on a Windows XP Computer and it appeared as Drive E I think and when I tried to open it it asked me to format it. I risked it and clicked OK and it said that I didn't have sufficient rights or something.
    SUMMERY:
2 GB USB ERASED USING MAC DISSK UTILITY
EVERYTHING FINE UNTIL I PLUG IN THE FLASH DRIVE IN A WINDOWS
WINDOWS ASKS ME TO REFORMAT FILE
I PLUG IT INTO A MAC COMPUTER AT WORK AND IT DOES WORK
IF ANYBODY KNOWS HOW DO I FIX THIS THANKS?

The drive is probably now formatted for a Mac only file system. To format for a PC:
Insert the drive in the Mac and start Disk Utility (Utilities folder).
Select the drive in the left column. Be sure to select the drive (all the way to the left) not a volume (indented below the drive name).
    Select the "Partition" tab.
Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition" (not "Current" even if it's already one partition).
    Click the "Options" button".
    Select "Master Boot Record".
    Click the "OK" button.
Enter a volume name (all uppercase).
    Set "Format" to "MS-DOS (FAT)".
    Click the "Apply" button.

  • Read windows email files downloaded to flash drive on home mac

Because my email at work is always too full, I bought one of those mini flash drives to off load some stuff so that I could delete it from my mailbox. When I brought the flash drive home and put it on my Mac, it shows all the files are there, but I can't seem to open them (see the one below as an example). When I click on them, they show up as an attachment in an email. I was able to read the text on one I tried by somehow getting to HTML (don't know how I got there), but it didn't show the item as it was, just the text. Is there something I have to do to read Windows files on my Mac? I don't have any problem when I forward emails from work to my home email, so why won't these files just open in Mail like those do? Each time I click on the one below, it just opens another mail page with this as an attachment, but the item itself doesn't open. Can you help?

  • USB Flash Drive Compatibility between Mac and PC?

    Hi,
I own an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and just got a new job where I'm using a PC. At work they all use flash drives to transfer data back and forth to computers etc. Would a flash drive (let's say a Kensington since that's the brand I've seen the most at work) that works in a PC at work be compatible with my iMac at home. I know Kensington makes them compatible for Mac and PC but just wondering how the data would transfer onto my Mac. Is it readable, does it depend what I'm transferring over?

That is pretty much a standard reply you get from someone that doesn't know anything about macs. I've used those things for years without any problems, but I have been using my ipod as a disk lately because I always have it with me. It's also another less thing I have to buy and carry around.

The camera connection kit can only be used to import photo/video files form a camera, SD card or USB flash drive. You can't import other types of files. You can't export any type of files using the camera connection kit.
