Will install discs for an iBook (mid 2005) work on an older model (late 2004) ?

I have a nephew that got an old 1.2 GHz 30 GB iBook from a neighbor. It had OS X 10.4 on it, but was not running. I used some old discs from an eMac to fix the OS, but couldn't get any additional software to install. I want to get the newest install discs for this iBook (OSX 10.4.2 and iLife '06). I don't know if the discs will allow the install of the application software bundle to the older iBook. Does anyone know if it will work?

The eMac disk does not have all the necessary software for an iBook. If you reinstall the Mac OSX 10.4.x from a retail disk then your problem should be solved.

  • Obtaining a replacement 10.3 or 10.4 install disc for our iBook

Hi, my wife has an old iBook G3 and the hard drive recently died. I'm replacing it but we do not have the original discs that came with the computer. Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a replacement OS install disc?
    Many Thanks!

Hi, Josh. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
To get a copy of the original system CDs, call Apple at 1-800-275-2273.
This will not include Mac OS X 10.3 nor Mac OS X 10.4, but an older version of Mac OS X. Which version of Mac OS X was on the original system CDs depends on which model iBook it is, but no iBook G3 came with these later versions of the OS.

  • What to do if yy PC says install disc for CS4 is corrupt and will not proceed?

My PC says install disc for CS4 is corrupt.  How can this be corrected?

You can download the installation file(s) and use your serial number from the disc to activate it.

  • Will Install discs work on both imacs?

Hi i have two intel 20" imacs (both core 2 duo 2.16ghz with model identifier iMac5,1) that were bought about 1 month apart but i only have the install discs for one of them - i don't actually need to do a clean install yet but i was wondering if the install discs would work on both machines.. the numbers that are on the disc don't seem to correspond to any numbers on the machine they came with.
Both machines have the same SMC version number but the boot ROM version number is out by one digit at the end (i don't even know if these numbers are relevant to the install discs!) could someone possibly help? I'm just trying to avoid having to pay for new discs if there's a chance these ones would work on the other machine.
    thanks.

    Hello,
The discs should be functional on both computers.
If you would like to test, you can try to boot the computers from the discs to see if you can. If the discs are the wrong versions they will give you an error explaining as much.

  • Will Install Disks for a MacBook (10.4.6) work on a non-Intel Mac?

I have got hold of new and unused install disks for a MacBook. Its OSX Tiger 10.4.6. Although all the new Macs are now Intel Duo, will this still be able to be installed on my iBook G4 512Mb?
Or will it only work on a Mac with an Intel Duo processor?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512Mb

The story has now changed somewhat. Copied from your original post in this thread.
I have got hold of new and unused install disks for a MacBook. Its OSX Tiger 10.4.6. Although all the new Macs are now Intel Duo, will this still be able to be installed on my iBook G4 512Mb?
Although this 10.4.6 install package for an iBook may work on your iBook, usually the build must be identical also.
A link I provided in one of my previous posts in this thread.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
This install package may install OK on your iBook but if the build is not identical, it may not work correctly after the fact.
Since the bods at the Apple Store you visited said this makes no difference - this iBook 10.4.6 install package you acquired will work on ANY non-Intel Mac, what are you worried about? Use it but to be on the safe side, I would first get the bods at this Apple Store to provide you a free exchange for a Tiger retail install install package if your install package doesn't work.

Pagemaker is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. It was discontinued over 10 years ago. (Though why it is still sold is a mystery.)
If you want to run PageMaker, your best bet is to use a Win2K or WinXP PC.
Otherwise move to Indesign or look at Serif's PagePlus or Scribus.

  • Mac Pro Install disc for a Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
Just wondering if theoretically it would be possible to use the install discs for Leopard on a new Macbook Pro. Meaning that the disc says 'MAC PRO: Mac OS X ...." but would they still work alright on a late 2009 Macbook Pro?
    Thanks guys!

Just wondering if theoretically it would be possible to use the install discs for Leopard on a new Macbook Pro.
No. A Mac generally can't start up from an OS older than the one which shipped with it.

  • Install discs for upgrade to OS X 10.3.9

I currently have OS X 10.3.7 running on my MiniMac. However I need to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 to enable connectivity to my recently purchased iPod Photo. My question is where can I locate an install disc for this upgrade (as the size of the Combo upgrade download is 117MB which is too large for a dial-up connection !)?
    Thanks

Hi Mac and iPod, and Welcome to Discussions!
If you take a blamk CD to an Apple Retail Store, they may let you download the Combo there, or might even do it for you.
Some libraries, bookstores, & cafes offer high speed internet access as well.
Or maybe a friend or relative with high speed?
    Good Luck!

  • My Mac Mini Will Not Boot From Install Disc For Re-Installation

I've tried all (at least the ones I've found) workarounds to get my Snow Leopard Install Disc to boot, but it will not. When the computer boots normally (without the DVD), I can insert the DVD and access it from there. However, when I try to use the utilities on the disc, it requires a reboot that ends up telling me to turn off my computer. I have a Late 2010 Mac Mini and I have yet to try booting from a disc, so I don't know if this is a new problem or an old one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unplug everything from your computer except a wired keyboard/mouse and the monitor. If your Mini still won't boot from the install DVD try resetting the PRAM and SMC.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't fix the problem remove any RAM (if you upgraded) and replace with the Mini's original RAM.  There is also this document you might want to read, Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup.
If that all fails I would take the Mini to the Apple store. It should still be under warranty if you bought it late last year.

  • Using Install DVDs for an iBook on a PowerBook

I recently purchased a 12" powerbook g4 1.5 GHz and I wanted to do a fresh install of the OS. However, the powerbook did not come with installation software. I have the installation discs from my iBook G4 (OSX - Tiger), though. Will these work for the powerbook and/or are there potential problems? Thanks in advance for your help!
    PB G4 12" 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific with build being the key word so the short answer is no.
It is not a good idea to purchase a used Mac without the install package that shipped with the Mac when new and if the OS on the used Mac was upgraded - like from Panther to Tiger for example, the retail install package for the upgrade should also be included.
You don't have the Hardware Test CD for this Mac model and build or the install package to run Disk First Aid repair - although a Tiger retail install package can be used for this or the install package to re-install the OS and all included software that shipped with this Mac when new via an A&I or an E&I is needed or desired.
Anyway to ask for the install package that shipped with this Mac when new and if not, you should contact Apple to request a replacement install package for this Mac.

  • Where can I buy install discs for my macbook pro 4,1 ?

My wife recently was given her old work computer. It was replaced by a brand new 15" MBP Retina.
The old one, a 15" MBP 4,1 early 2008 will be given to our daughter. I would like to do a fresh install of the OS and upgrade to stop at Snow Leopard. My wife thinks it came with Leopard when she first got it (10.5.2 is confimed by mactracker) and then she had it upgraded to Lion. Right now it is running 10.8.0.
The guy who bought the computer for her back in 2008 is no longer with the company and nobody can find the discs. I tried to boot from my late 2008 13" MB 5,1 factory discs and had no luck.
Where can I find factory install discs that will work?
    Thanks in advance,

Phone AppleCare and order them. Alternatively, if you don't need iLife or the Apple Hardware Test, you can just use a retail Mac OS X 10.6 DVD.

  • I've forgotten my administrator password and have lost the original install disc for my macbook but I do have the install disc for my imac; can I use the imac install disc to reset the administrator password?

I've forgotten my administrator password for my macbook pro and don't have the original OS X disc; I do have the OS X disc for my iMac.  Can I use this to reset the password?

You have nothing to loose by trying it.
I doubt it will boot but try it anyhow.
You will need to contact Apple for replacement install disks.

  • Relooking at install discs for Applications and drivers

I seem to recall reading some advice suggesting to look to the installation discs for more up to date versions of applications or printer drivers.
For example - My version of iPhoto is 2 (which was installed from my installation process when I bought my computer.
Is it really possible there is version iPhoto4 (let's say) hidden in one of the discs which I could find?
If so which disc will it be in and what does I do? Just insert the disc?
Also - I believe there's all sorts of printer drivers on the discs - which obviously weren't downloaded - because they're not in my computer!
Where are all these 'hidden' drivers.
Some general pointers on understanding the instal discs will be appreciated.
    Thank you
    gordon

    Hi Gordon!
For printer drivers, I always go to the manufacturer's website to download the most current updated driver. I never use the software CDs that ship with the printer.
It's possible that the driver on the CD, included with the printer, will be older than the one from the website.
You never know how long the boxed printer has been sitting on a retail shelf.
Depending on the age of the OS X install CDs, the same would apply. The printer drivers could be older than the website's updated drivers.
I don't have any extra printer drivers installed on my iMac.

  • Making a USB install disc for macbook air using a windows PC!

Ok i have an iMac and a macbook air, so this guide here seems good for me right?
How to Create a Mac Snow Leopard USB Installer Disk
The problem I've got is that my iMac superdrive is skewed, it just won't read anything (disc is new etc but the drive won't work with pretty much ANY disc at all, and i mean any, just spits them out after a few seconds of trying to read it).
Anyways, can this process as described in the URL above be done using a windows based pc? i also have one as a media centre in my room and it has a working dvd drive..... if so what do i need to do? this is driving me insane! i cannot afford an external superdrive or any other external drives at the moment nor is the iMac in warranty and nor do i have the ability to take it anywhere.

Its a long one to explain but the superdrive in the imac works when it wants, and fortuantly last time it worked with the OSX disc that came with the imac! amazing, i made the usb installer and then when booted with macbook air it stated it cannot be installed. I did a little digging and discovered that it was because the imac came with one of those grey OEM discs and are not able to transpose to another machine at all, this is officially from apple and what others have used, hence my need to then get a full snow leopord disc.
The disc however unlike the other OSX grey one will not read at all
also what i mean is can i use the drive from the windows machine to make the usb install disc not using windows itself....?

  • How do I get a replacement install disc for my MacBook Pro?

My MacBook Pro was stolen last year and recently recovered by the police.  I was overjoyed until I found that the theif installed windows 7 onto to my computer.  I know I need to reformat my hardrive but I no longer have the system intalll disc that came with my computer.  Can I just buy a OS X disc from apple or do I need to get a specific disc MacBook disc for everything to work properly?
    -Ryan

For software discs, there are two cases:
    a) came with 10.6. In this case order the replacement DVD from Apple.
    b) came with 10.7. In this case there may be no replacement discs. Start up with Command-R and install 10.7 from the Internet.
This varies slightly depending on EXACTLY which model you have.
