Will installing 10.5 erase everything on my computer ?

Hello, this question may sound a bit ignorant but here goes...I have a Power Mac G5 running OS X 10.3.9, I came across a 10.5 install disc...I am concerned that if I install the new OS that I will lose all of my files...Such as Pro Tools, my Itunes music library etc. Thank you all in advance.

I came across a 10.5 install disc...
"Came across"? Is this legal copy? Terms of use on this board specifically prohibit promoting illegal use of software.
In addition, if it is an install disc that shipped with some other machine--as opposed to an off-the-shelf package--then it is a bad idea to try to install it on your G5. Discs that ship with hardware have machine-specific installations, and will not work and play well on incompatible hardware.

  • Will installing Snow Leopard erase existing data already on my computer

My Software is at 10.5.8 and I'm about to install Snow Leopard (pretty behind on the updates).  My question is:  Will installing this erase my existing data on my computer?  I have a lot of .ai files and such I need for my business that I have to keep.  I have an external hard drive that I just backed up on using time machine but I'm not 100% trustworthy of that.

How to Install Snow Leopard Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your OS X Installer DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
      1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
      2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
      3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
          1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
          2. Restart the computer.
          3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
          4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
              logo appears.
          5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. Update to 10.6.8:
      1. Download and install update:  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

  • How can I erase everything on my computer before I sell it?

I'm selling my Macbook Pro to the person who tried to fix it when my airport card stopped working but before I lose ownership of it I need to delete everything off of it! Problem is I can't find the box it came in along with the Installation Disk thats inside the box. Could someone please tell me how to delete everything from my computer?

Since the install DVDs are part of the Mac, you really should call AppleCare and ask them to send you a replacement set. They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • If I erase my phone will it erase everything from my computer as well?

iTunes and my iPhone 4 are having a really annoying disagreement. There are things on my phone that I no longer want on my phone (music, photos, aps, etc.) but every time I delete them off of my phone (through iTunes or through the phone itself) when I plug my phone back in and hit sync it all reappears on the phone and it's taking up too much space.
I want to hit the Erase iPhone button and delete everything and start from scratch but I don't want to lose my contacts.
My contacts are saved in the address book of my macbook - when I hit erase on my phone, will it delete it off my laptop as well?
I've reached my wits end with this contraption. Someone help me.

Generally, you should back up your computer before you install any new apps or when you have something you do not want to lose.
If it has been one year (or 6 months or 3 months) since you last backup, anything since your last backup will not be able to get recovered if you need to.
Does that mean all my contacts would be gone? As far as I can tell they're being saved through iCloud
If you are syncing contacts and calendars with iCloud, deleting on the computer or the iPhone will not remove then from iCloud.

  • Will resetting my phone erase everything?

There is something wrong with the card I have on the App Store I've tried everything so if I reset my phone it'd b like starting over right

No, resetting yoru iPhone by holding down the home and sleep buttons, waiting for the Apple logo, then letting go of the buttons will not delete anything.
Can you tell us what happens when you try to update your apps?

  • Will installing new software erase my music?

I just got the gen5 video ipod.
I already have itunes but when the cd is installing whatever it says its going to uninstall what i already have. Does that mean all my music is gonna go with it?? Is that the only way to connect the my ipod with my comp???? help??
    Is this to vague??

When you update iTunes, it should bring your existing library into the new installation. If you have the room and want to be safe, make a COPY of the iTunes folder with a different name then do the install. If for some odd reason it did delete all the files from the library folders, it will do it on the main iTunes music folder, not the backup copy you made, so you would be able to recover. But I don't think you need worry.

  • I erased everything as in EVERYTHING, no software, completely. How do I install the OS software 10.7?

I erased everything on my computer hoping to start from scratch... I went too far.  Now I can't install 10.7 nor 10.6.  Background...  I received my Mac Mini from my son and want to put in my admin information on it.  Whenever I start it, it always go to the Disk Utility.   Even holding the option key...  There's no disk to boot from. I hit the recovery disk.... Nothing.  I've tried to reinstall 10.7 from the menu... Nothing.  I even purchased 10.7 and the code.   I even purchased the 10.6.3 install dvd... Nothing, it just keeps spitting it back out. My Mac mini is the early 2007 model,  so the highest OS is 10.7.  Please help or just te

Thank you for replying.  Nothing as in when the computer tries to install Lion from the internet it says 'not available at this time' or something along those lines.
How would I reboot to recovery partition?  When I click on the Recovery disk, it states it is unable to.
I do not have an external drive.
I do have an other Mac, but it's ancient... it is 2003 17" iMac with no Intel and the highest OS it has is 10.5.8.  It does have a Firewire, but in the article you stated, it said I needed to have 10.8 or higher as the host computer. :-(  I also tried to put the System on USB from the iMac and then try to install in the Mini... nothing.  But at the same token... I'm not 100% sure on everything I am doing.  LOL!
If there is some way for me to start completely over from scratch and install an OS X in there, I am willing to do that.  But I need step by step instructions... when I say step by step, pretend I don't know anything about computers.  I have had Macs for many of years (20+ years), but have never had to go inside of it.
I also forgot to mention...  before I erased EVERYTHING, I tried, okay I did go in to the root screen to try to copy what someone had posted to start for the install screen...  that's when everything went wrong.  I know...  I should never go in there.  Any help and input is greatly appreciated.  Thank you again!!!!

  • I want to erase everything, and leave a clean Lion OS

Can someone tell me how I erase everything on my computer (Macbook Pro) and restore just the Lion OS?
(I'm giving my machine away to another person, want them to have it like it came from Apple.)

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I have had my phone for a while and I just installed upgrades to it on my new computer everything went well now i imported some music to my itunes and want to put it on my phone and it is telling me it will erase my old itunes library because it is sync t

my itunes keeps telling me its gonna erase my library if i try to add music. is it gonna erase everything like it already has or just the none existant music that is on my phone

If you have all of your music in your iTunes library you have nothing to worry about.  Even if syncing wipes your music off your phone it will restore it again during the sync process.  If you have non-purchased music on your phone that is not in your iTunes library, these songs will be lost.  If you have purchased music on your phone that isn't in your iTunes library, you can transfer these by right-clicking on your phone in iTunes and selecting "Transfer Purchase" prior to syncing (and even if they are erased they can be redownloaded for free).

    Bryan,
Do you have a second hard drive?  If you can get the install disk to boot the computer then all is not lost.  Install a clean system on a second hard drive to get back in business.  If you have any backup copies of your software and files, use them to restore your computer to good working condition.
Then, install some form of data recovery software on your second drive.  The recovery software can look at a bit mapped version of your drive and extract data that may be scrambled but usable.  Think of the drive as a book.  If someone tore out a few pages from the table of contents or index from a book, the main volume would be there but the book would not be repairable.  Or, if the table of contents is OK but someone tore out a chapter or two, the other chapters would be there.  The book is not complete but all is not lost.
Here is a review to get you up to speed:
    http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software/
Start by getting your computer working off a clean install on a second drive so the data recovery process will work faster and have a destination for the recovered data.

  • PLEASE HELP. my 2007 macbook will not accept the reinstall disc mac os x 10.4.9 after i erased everything.  the screen is grey with a flashing folder with ? on it.  what can i do to fix it?

i erased everything from my macbook and try to reinstall the MAC os x 10.4.9.  but now when i restart my computer the screen is grey with a file folder marked with a "?" flashing.  when the dics is already already inserted and i restart it, regardless if i hold down the "c" or "d" key with rebooting, the disc is automatically ejected and then it goes back to the grey screen with the flashing "? folder".
if i was to try and reinstall the "for mac computers" os x 10.5.4 the computer will load the disc and bring me to the language select menu but as soon as i click the "next" button it tells me that the software is not able to be installed on that computer.
i have no clue what to do.  the computer was working COMPLETELY fine before i erased something.

Yikes, what happens or shows if you hold the Option or alt key on bootup?
The 10.5.4 Disc at least sounds like a Gray Machine specific Disk, or wrong Partition Scheme!???
Does that one allow Disk Utility to run?
    Did you Erase to GUID?
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • My Mac has recently been restored in an Apple Store. I'm wanting to backup my iPhone 4 so I can use that data on my new iPhone 5. Though as my apple ID and everything has been reset to Factory Settings, if I plug my iphone in, will it erase everything?

Okay, so I got Apple to restore my whole Mac operating system, and it obviously reset all my settings and computer to factory settings. As I now have an iPhone 5 and wanting to backup my iPhone 4, I can't do this as my Mac does not have any recorded backup's from before as they were deleted in the restoration. So i want to plug my iPhone 4 in to back it up. The main question is if I plug my iPhone 4 in, will it erase everything? and if so, how do i prevent this from happening as I have very important data on my iPhone 4 i can't lose.
    Thanks
    Georgia!

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Also
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
