Will installing OS X mavericks slow down my late-2007 macbook pro?
Will installing OS X mavericks slow down my late-2007 macbook pro? If so, is it worth it?
I currently run OSX 10.7.5 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb mem.
Does it meet the specs for Lion?
Are your third apps compatible?
I'd also be sure to have at least 4GB RAM and 10-15% free space on your HDD.

Late 2007 Macbook pro 15inch Mavericks update?
I have a late 2007 Macbook pro 15inch which I love. Can it be updated to mavericks or must I bid it a fond farewell?
Thank you!Your Mac originally came with 2 GB of RAM. Mavericks will run in that amount but will be slower than if you have 4 GB or 6 GB. If after you upgrade you want more speed see OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial.com for memory upgrades. They are inexpensive.

Late 2007 MacBook Pro - Fresh install
I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro. I want to do a fresh install. Is it best to use the original discs, which would take me back to tiger, or can I just use a new retail copy of Snow Leopard?
Will that retail copy of Snow Leopard hold all the proper drivers for the late 2007 mbp?I just did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on my late 2007 MPB (I bought it in Jan 08 and it shipped with Leopard). Worked out fine, only difference is the Retail Snow Leopard doesn't bundle the iLife applications like the originals did. Other than that it went very smoothly.

Performance unacceptable after installing lion on late 2007 MacBook Pro
I have a mid-2007 MacBook Pro with 2Gb of memory and a 2.4GHz Intel Core2Duo. Since installing Lion, Safari is all but unusable, it takes forever to load, every page I try to load stops the entire computer with the spinning beach ball, I haven't even tried flash sites. iTunes hangs every time I download a podcast at the processing file stage. I keep iTunes open to feed my AppleTV, but after a few hours of watching I have to restart iTunes because everything starts to hang. To say nothing of what happens when iTunes starts automatically downloading podcasts. Syncs with my iPad have been hit or miss. The entire machine seems slow and sluggish. I tried running one app at a time, and that helped some, but it didn't fix the problem. I am assuming this is a RAM issue and have ordered more, but Apple said it would work with 2Gb of RAM. I don't call this working.
So my question is does it save memory to run apps in full screen or should I keep them as just windows? I have tried to kill all the extras, and I have been trying to just do one thing at a time, but I have honestly never had this kind of reaction to a new OS when the machine was in spec. And I have been upgrading since system 7. Is 4Gb going to be enough? Is the processor just not fast enough to handle it? Upgrading to a new machine is not an option at all, and I really like the working bits of Lion I have seen, but am I stuck?I haven't done permissions yet, but I have rebooted several times. I had an issue with the superdrive not recognizing DVDs, so I zapped the PRAM and did the SMC thing. Plus, I've tried rebooting just to see if that would help, but it has not.
I have been watching istat and there's some free memory but not a lot. I was fine under snow leopard, I never had any troubles until I started running a lot of stuff at once. I agree that this is almost certainly memory. It gets worse the more things I try to do at once. Everything hangs whenever there's an operation to be done (syncing, downloading). It just feels like the machine is choking.
I saw an article earlier on one of the Mac RSSs that the writer was having problems with Safari consuming up to a gig of memory just sitting idle with a few tabs open. I'm not going to bother with Safari until I put the memory in, Chrome runs pretty well, even if I can't really do the full-screen thing. I guess at this point I'm just looking for help for what I can do to conserve memory until more arrives. And I'm a little annoyed at Apple for saying Lion works with 2Gb of RAM when it really doesn't. If you can't use the browser or the iTunes, how can you even hope to run Photoshop? iMovie takes 5 minutes to load and when it does it's full of visual glitches.
I guess I'll try permissions and see if that helps. Thanks for your ideas though. -
Will OS X Mountain Lion slow down or crash my MacBook Air "13?
Hi
I just downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and I am hesitant to install it... Here are some reasons why
1. My MacBook Air will crash during the installation
2. It will dramaticly slow down my notebook (CPU)
Thanks if you can answer my question.
P.S. I have to 2GB of memory (RAM)It won't slow it down over Lion. Likely be faster, but you would be better off with 4GB or more RAM.

Late 2007 MacBook Pro Randomly Shuts Down
I have a late 2007 15-inch MacBook Pro (A1226). It has a 2.20 GHz Core 2 Duo, 5 GB of memory (a stock 1 GB stick and a 3rd party 4 GB stick), and a stock 200 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi hard drive. I have had issues with it shutting down in certain situations.
(1) The laptop shuts down abruptly whenever I pick it up and walk around with it. This consistently happens within 5 seconds of picking it up. I know for a fact that this never used to be problem. I only started noticing this happening about 5 months ago.
(2) The laptop randomly shuts down abruptly when I'm using it on a hard stable surface that does not block any vents. This does not necessarily happen when it is under a heavy load. When it happens, the laptop suddenly shuts down and the screen suddenly goes black. I have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes for it to be willing to turn back on again. This happens one to three times a day, and it is completely unpredictable. Below is a graph of various temperatures up until the point when it shuts down. None of these temperatures are high enough for me to suspect that this issue is caused by overheating.
I would really appreciate it if anyone had any insight into why these random shutdowns are happening. Thanks!I suggest an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any issues:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
An appointment at an Apple genius bar seems like a good idea. Since you say that the problem occurs when you pick up the MBP, you should be able to recreate it for the technicians.
Though I do not believe that it is connected with yo ur problem, I would suggest replacing the 1 GB RAM chip with a 2 GB RAM chip. That is the best RAM combination for your MBP.
Ciao. -
Late 2007 Macbook Pro 802.11n slow transmit rate
I have a Netgear Rangemax N router. But when I connect to the network and option+click on the wifi, my PHY Mode says "802.11n" but my transmit rate is only 54. When my Macbook air connects to the same router, the PHY Mode is still 802.11n, but my transmit is 170. What is happening that my Macbook Pro is connecting slower than the Macbook Air when on the same network?
When I read "crash," "distorted line across my screen," "it gets really hot," and "2007 17" MacBook Pro," the first thing that comes to mind is logic/graphics board. Visit your local Apple Store, and see if they can validate this suspicion or not. The SMART utility reading usually precedes a drive failure, but it's hard to conclude what's happening here.
In the meantime, make sure you're completely backed up. If you don't back up, purchase an external HD, and back up with SuperDuper. Preserve your machine by running things at lower temperatures (under 160•F), and keep an eye on iStat.
Oh, and tell us the problem when you know. -
Is there any way to instal 10.4.7 server into a June 2007 Macbook Pro 17?
I downloaded the 10.4.7 universal server release disk image and burned it onto a dvd, but my MBP 17 won't boot from it. It says it can be used by any intel computer but for some reason MBP doesn't boot. It's a Santa Rosa 2.4 Ghz MBP and I don't know how I can install 10.4.7 server on this machine.
Minimally, this Macbook Pro system requires Mac OS X 10.4.9, per [article 303315|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315]. That written, you can get Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 to 10.4.9 or 10.4.11 using the Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 Universal installation DVD that you should have and an upgrade sequence described over in [article 305537|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305537] and in [article 302960|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960].
I'm not aware of a download for Tiger Server that's open; what's available works in conjunction with the installation DVD.
Alternatively, the 10.5 Leopard Server DVD can be an option. -
Below is the crash report from today... the computer suddenly turned off while connecting to an external disk. Most of the time, it crashes while using Chrome or Calendar apps, watching a YouTube video, etc. It crashes every 12 hours or so of use.
I've tried deleting particular plists and resetting SMC. Argh... should I just downgrade back to an OSX 10.8?
Thanks!!

Yes it's another Mavericks slowing down my laptop thread :)
Hi there
I recently installed Mavericks, just before Xmas in fact, and noticed how slow it was from the start. Now I'm back at work, it's killing me!
First off, I had lots of problems with Mail, and something to do with Keychain (forgive me, laptop is a tool, I don't really understand how it works). I managed to get that working, although, I must say it still is slow at collecting mail from my various accounts.
Word, well that's just hysterical. I can sit and type a few lines, sit back and watch Word catch up with me over a minute or so, then have to go back and correct my terrible typing, it's painful and un-usable. I have noted on here to rebuild my Office Database, which I've done, and it appeared to have no problems.
So what to do? I heard about EtreCheck so have run that and will paste results below, I'm hoping that someone will spot something there that is really obvious and return me to fact Mac nirvana.
I'm on a 2011 MacBook Pro, 2.8ghz Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM. i don't have lots of 3rd party stuff installed, but do run Photoshop, Quark, Office and a few other apps.
Here's hoping for help, and thanks in advance!
Jonny

Let’s start with the basics. Mechanical disk drives are very slow, with access speeds in the 10s of milliseconds and transfer rates in the 200-400 Mbps range real world. SSDs are much faster, on the order of a couple of ms access and typically 1200-3000 mbps transfer rates. RAM is much faster than either, in the nanosecond access and transfer speeds of ~8 Gbps effective (1 GHz x 8 bits/byte).
These are rough numbers for comparison purposes only.
So the goal is to keep as much in RAM as possible. But if you run out of RAM what do you do?
Traditionally you take the least used RAM and write it to a special part of the disk, in a way that you can access it most efficiently - minimizing the disk delays. This is called a swap file because you swap RAM in and out of it.
10.9 has a new trick: it compresses RAM using the main processors. Rather than swapping stuff to disk (disks are slow), it actually uses the processor to compress memory and make, for example, 1 GB of physical RAM hold as much as 1.5GB. Similar approaches are used to make MP3 files 10x smaller than the real thing - there is redundancy in data and you can take advantage of that. Apple is making the following calculation: the processors can compress way faster than the disk can swap. And its also predicting that the processors are often partly idle - waiting for swap files or disk access. So rather than swap files around, its compresses the files ***in RAM***.
Compression works,. Tests show that on average it is faster, and that 4GB (i have 4 GB RAM) acts like 5 1/2 - 6GB. Wow.
So, 10.9 will load up most of your RAM, knowing that it can compress some when it needs to. So don’t worry too much that it may look like all your RAM is taken - yea, it is, but its OK.
The measures to look at are:
1. amount compressed. Compression means it has run out of RAM and needs more. As long as compression is low this is fine. In fact this is how 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently than 10.6,7 or 8. Contrary to common wisdom, it requires LESS RAM than 10.8. The colored indicator tells you who this is going - green (good), yellow( iffy) and red (bad).
2. amount swapped. Once it cannot compress any further, or can’t do so efficiently, jot begins old-fashioned swapping. This is a major slow-down and means you would benefit from more RAM. Tiny amounts are OK.
here's an article by Apple - but on th pre-10.9 memory management techniques....mostly still true, but read on.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Bottom line - compression makes 10.9 use RAM more efficiently than previous OSX versions. It also makes the “ram used” indicator less meaningful, and mans you should monitor “compression” .
That said, RAM has always been one of the most cost effective upgrades possible. People spend too much on new machines and too little on more RAM.
Hope this helps,

Mac is slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Many other users are having sucess by using EtreCheck to show what is installed so they can remove or update the 3rd party software, it can be a long process.

The choice is yours, if you have a backup just revert to that. -
Mavericks slowed down my MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)
I did a clean install of 10.6.3 (which came with my MacBook Pro). Then upgraded to 10.6.8 to be able to download Mavericks from the App store. Installed Mavericks and everything (boot-up, application lauch, opening folders, etc.) has been dragging since then. Can someone explain a better way to do the installation or changes to make to improve the speed?
Thank you,
MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)I have the same problem. I have 4gb of RAM; I was going to upgarde to 8, but seeing that you have 8, this probably won't help.
I feel like it's progressivly getting slower as well.
I was going to get a solid state drive and more RAM to fix the issue.
Looking at my activity monitor I show this:
As it sits right now, I have just Chrome open, facebook tab, email tab and this thread tab open and it's using 3.99 of my memory. Kernal_task is using the most memory.
I dont want to buy a new computer but maybe it's just too old?
Any info would be great. I'm not terribly technical and I love my mac, makes me sad to think of getting rid of it! Altho excited for a new one -
Why is Mavericks slowing down my whole system?
I've had Mavericks installed since the day it was released and I'm still having slowdown problems. I've run Disk Repair and even upgraded to 8GB RAM. I'm running a late 2011 Macbook Pro and I'm losing my mind. Below are my EtreCheck results, a process recommended in another thread. Can anyone help me?

Hi, I bought a late 2013 MacBook Pro without retina display and I want to know if I should upgrade to mavericks since I don't want to make it slower, is it worth it?
angie.ob,
if your MacBook Pro is non-Retina, then the newest model that it could be is a Mid 2012.
The worth of upgrading to Mavericks depends entirely upon your priorities. What is it about having Mavericks on your MacBook Pro that appeals to you? If Mavericks in its current incarnation makes your MacBook Pro run more slowly, do you have a plan by which you can easily go back to Mountain Lion?
