Will iPhoto collection be automatically migrated to new Photos app?

Will iPhoto collection be automatically migrated to new Photos app when it replaces iPhoto?

If history is any guide, and I'm not saying it is or it isn't, the new application will likely import your old photo libraries or access them directly.
However, as with all upgrades, we have to wait and see. None of us have a crystal ball into the future.
Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Thumbnails not showing or very fuzzy after migration to new Photos app with 10.10.3

I updated to 10.10.3 last week. It came with the new Photos app.
But now when I open Photos, about 1/3 of my photos are missing the thumbnail (they just show a light gray box), and about another 1/3 are rotated wrongly and very fuzzy.
I can individually "fix" each bad thumbnail by double clicking on the the empty thumbnail box, then double-clicking again on the large image that shows. Then the thumbnail appears.
To fix the improperly rotated thumbnails and their fuzzyness, I can right-click the thumbnail, and tell Photos to rotate it clockwise 4 times. Then it shows up properly, and is in focus.
This wouldn't be a big deal if I only had a few hundred pictures. But I have about 65,000 pictures.
    How can I fix this?
PS, I already tried rebuilding the Photos Library. Nothing changed.

In case anyone else has this issue...
It appears that Photos is "fixing" these photos by itself.
I have left Photos open all day (about 12 hours now), and now there are no more photos without thumbnails (that I could find anyway).
There are still LOTS of photos that have fuzzy or improperly rotated photos, but I wonder if Photos is correcting these as well. I think I will leave the program open for another 12-24 hours and see what happens.

  • Would I be able to migrate to new Photos app from Aperture 2.x ?

Although I've been trying to keep up on upgrading HW and SW, I have some old Aperture libraries, but all under Aperture 2.x.
Does anybody knows if Photos would take Aperture 2.x libraries?
If not, does that mean I need to rush and buy Aperture 3 before it is taken out of the Mac App Store?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I contacted Apple Support with the same question.
First level support tech told me it "would be fine", should work, "probably be okay" under repeated questions about how certain he was.  I asked to be transferred to Pro Apps technical support. This guy understood my dilemma. I cannot, and frankly should not, have to justify paying for Aperture 3.6 at this juncture, considering it will be discontinued. But, I want to be certain that my Aperture 2.X libraries will migrate to Photos.  I no longer require the editing power of Aperture, but of course, do not want to lose access to my thousands of photos in Aperture 2.0.
It was as if this tech in Pro, had not been asked this question before. He consulted "senior" support reps and still was not able to definitively say.
1.) Recommendations Apple has:  Bite the bullet and pay for Aperture 3.6. Be certain that way.
2.) Join the Public Beta program (new, separate partition)  and "try" Photos migration.  I can't do this because of hardware constraints.  Another external hard drive would cost as much as the software for example.
3.) Take my Aperture libraries on a backup drive to an Apple store and ask them to update them to Aperture 3.6 format.   <  This alone tells me there is an update process and a difference in the database organization and perhaps foretells that migration from 2.X will not work.
Apple is supposed to get back to me with a definitive answer.  I am frankly not surprised as most manufacturers assume users, especially "pro" users will keep up to date and Aperture 2.X is, what, five years old?
Will repost when I hear back from pro support.

  • New Photo app stuck at startup

I have a Mid 2011, 27" iMac.  With the recent update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 on April 24, 2015, Apple replaced iPhoto in my Dock with the new Photo app (The original iPhoto is still in my Applications folder.).  When I opened the new Photo app [Version 1.0 (209.52.0)], it came up with a dialog box suggesting the use of the iCloud Photo Library.  I clicked on the "Use iCloud Photo Library" button and found I have too large of a photo library and there would be a cost involved to use it, so I decided to go back and select the "Not now" button.  However, that "button" is not (or no longer) a hotspot and does not work.  Finding no way out, I thought I'd close and restart Photo, but I get a dialog box that "Photos is creating or opening a library.  Cannot quit Photos while it is creating or opening a library."
    Suggestions?

I executed a Force Quit on the new Photo app, then restarted it.  At the Welcome window, I clicked on the Get Started button and a spinning gear started just below the button.  That gear is still spinning two days later.  Can I safely Force Quit the Photo app. again?  Then what?  Can I continue to use the older iPhoto app?  Thank-you for any further suggestions.

  • New Photo App Permissions Across Users

What have Apple done to my iPhoto permissions?
I have a shared photo library which used to be accessed by all users.  We have an iMac that is used by the whole family.  Everyone takes and loads photos to the shared library - this worked a dream in iPhoto.
Now we have the new Photo app and all of a sudden, I'm the only one who has access to the library.  When my wife opens the app on her account, she doesn't get the choice of what library to attach to - the app bypasses that.  I have looked at the permissions for the Photo Library and added all users to read/write.  When my wife tried to access this using File/Import, the photos library icon is blanked out - still no access!
    The library is located here:
    macintosh HD/users/shared/photos library
It has 80Gb of memories that my wife can't now access if she wants to when going about her daily stuff on the machine.
Seriously, I love Apple but their views on who should be able to see what drives me nuts.  This is my machine, used by my family - I should be the one to decide who sees what.  Just let ME make these decisions PLEASE!
    How can I fix this?
    Any help/insight would be appreciated.
    Ta.

What system were you running prior to upgrading to 10.10.3?  Using the Shared folder for iPhoto Libraries was discontinued by Apple several versions back. Users would run into permissions issues each time a different user added photos to the library or made any edits.
Now the only way is to put it on an external HD formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and have it hard wired to the computer, i.e FireWire, USB, etc.

  • Will the new photos app and icloud photos library support all formats of pics and videos from my iphoto library?

I will be migrating my whole 200gb iPhoto library 9.5.1 mavericks over to Yosemite iPhoto 9.6.1 and then migrate to the new photos app and hopefully to the icloud.photos online. Does this all support all of my formats such as AVI videos in my iPhoto library. I don't want to lose those through migration.

I have this 31% issue too - when I attempt to update my iPhoto library to the new Photo app.
I have a few libraries - one on my mac, and two on a NAS. I access the NAS via wifi.
The mac based library did update, but the two network albums have yet to be successfully migrated over to Photo.
    It's driving me insane!!!

  • IPhoto Library and new Photos app

What happens to the iPhoto Library when the new Photos app comes along?  Does it automatically get uploaded to iCloud?  I have 34 g/bytes of photos.

    Only 34 gigs?
I can see no way that you will be forced to upload everything to the Cloud. It simply makes no sense for those with hundreds and hundreds of gigs of photos.

  • Iphoto to new photo app help!

With the recent update and the new photo app installed on my imac, I can no longer open up any of my old iphoto libraries that I have backed up on an external hard drive. How do I do this? Iphoto has disappeared so I can no longer do it that way, and i've tried to re-install it but its no longer available on the app store! I want to be able to open up the libraries with the new photo app and so I can save them in this new format to make sure they are not lost. Any help greatly appreciated
    ios. OX Yosemite 10.10.3

    1. iPhoto should still be in your Applications folder. If it's out-of-date:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
    2. Photos can also open and migrate libraries on an external that is correctly formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). To do this simply open them: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • How to use iphoto after yosemite 10.10.3, that have disabled it for new photo app?

My iMac did install new yosemite 10.10.3 telling me that new Photo app was "best ever" but now I can't open old iPhoto library because it was in old format of iPhoto library and the iPhoto app was now unusable because new Photo app. Can you help me!!??

and the iPhoto app was now unusable because new Photo app. Can you help me!!??
Which version of iPhoto do you have installed?  With Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10.3, you need to update iPhoto to version 9.6.1.  Only that version is fully compatible.
Apple stopped selling iPhoto, but anyone who bought iPhoto from the AppStore or updated it to a version sold at the App Store (iPhoto 9.4.5 or later) will be able to reinstall from the App Store by downloading from the Purchases tab.
If you have any version of iPhoto, that has been updated from the AppStore and is associated with your Apple ID, try to reinstall from the "Purchases" page.
Unhide iPhoto, if it is hidden on your Purchases page (See this link: Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases)
Trash the incompatible iPhoto version, but don't empty the Trash.
Reload your Purchases page at the App Store with ⌘R
    Then download from that page.
The step "Trash the incompatible iPhoto version, but don't empty the Trash."  must not be skipped. If Spotlight sees a version of iPhoto installed, the AppStore will try to update instead of reinstall, which does not work.

  • What exactly is the difference between the new photos app for mac and iPhoto? i'm very confused...

Now apple added this new photos app and i don't really understand what is it meant for? can someone please explain me the difference? I'm very confused about the purposes of both apps....
Photos is a completely new designed photo application, designed for Yosemite and the MacOS X versions to come. Many differences are under the hood. It uses the new system libraries and frameworks for more efficient image processing on the new powerful macs, like the mac pro, it is extensible by app extensions, if other developers will add functionality, and most important, it brings integration with iCloud Photo Library. With Photos you can store your photo library in iCloud and sync it across all devices.
Some features are still missing however, and you can continue to use iPhoto, if you like. Or create a small Photos library for testing and explore Photos, while keeping your main libraries in iPhoto.

  • Is it safe to update iPhoto 8.1.2 to 9.5.1 or should I just wait for new Photos app with OS X Yosemite ?

iPhoto has always been slow and less than reliable to use. Have never updated it because of concerns with updates. Will current pics in iPhoto get transferred to new Photos app with OS X Yosemite somehow or will I be stuck using both apps?

I do experience slowness/unresponsiveness and freezing in iPhoto,
    Two points:
    1. These sound like a damaged Library file and you might try repairing it.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
and from reading numerous posts, I am quite certain that many users have had similar experiences.
The problem with this is that the folks who don't have any problems never post, so you're working from a skewed sample.

  • Will Aperture support new Photo app's library?

New Photo app (comes with OS X 10.10.3 beta) has changed iPhoto library name and structure, since Aperture uses the same photo library as iPhoto uses, does that mean Aperture will no longer work when OS X 10.10.3 is officially released to public?
Will existing Aperture's filters be compatible with new Photo app's editing function?

You can open the versions with the filename extensions "migratedphotolibrary", e,g, iPhoto Library iPhoto.migratedphotolibrary.
While you are experimenting, make sure the filename extensions will show for all your photo libraries, so you know which version you are dealing with.
If you try to browse the main "Photos.library" in Aperture or iPhoto, those applications will simply open the last library they could open, and if you have deleted this library, Aperture or iPhoto will come up empty.

  • In the new Photo app 'Projects' will not stay open

    Hi
In the new Photo app. released last week, I can not get the 'projects' to remain open.  It just crashes and closes and actually now , since this afternoon I can not open any of it without it crashing.
    i have a mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.3.
i have a few photo books, slideshows and cards in the projects if this helps.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, even if its just so I can access the photos.
    Many thanks.

Many people are reporting the project->crash problem.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no fix for it.
For some folks, a temporary workaround is to select View->Sidebar and access the projects *individually*.
Hopefully this will work for you, fairymoo!
Apple's Meta-Problem: Inexplicably, "Photos" is *NOT* listed as an Application Community on the top-level web-site "https://discussions.apple.com/welcome" ... thus plenty of folks (including the poster and me too) have been unable even to find the right community for seeking/posting solutions.
Conclusion: not a smooth roll-out, Apple!   Not least, why is the Photos Community so difficult to locate?

  • With new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did in the past with iPhoto.

With the new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did with iPhoto.  For instance, I have a photo collage app that in the past, I could just drag in the photos I wanted to include.  Now, I can DRAG the photos, but they do not DROP.  So, I have to go through the export process.  It is tedious.  What am I missing?  Where can I turn on the drag and drop feature for Photos?

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there
