Will it run Windows Apps???

Now we have intel based macs but....
the big question is,will it run windows apps,I don't want to run windows, just the apps if there's a need to.
Cheers

No.
There a many more differences between Windows and Mac programs than just the processor they've been using.
Projects such as http://darwine.opendarwin.org/ will probably gain more support and become "useable" now that Macs with Intel CPUs are shipping. Emulating a complete PC, using something like Virtual PC, will be much faster in the future too. Neither of these options will be as good as native programs of course.

  • Is it possible to run windows apps?

... Without running windows on my iBook G4? I would like to run 2 apps: Digidesigns D-Show and another very small app. I have searched and searched, and the only solution I can find is to emulate windows, but I don't have access to a version of windows. So is there any way to run windows apps without running windows OS?

    Rune:
I needed to run a software package for business but did not want to buy a PC. So I installed Virtual PC (not the demo linked here) and run it on my Pismo. It is not super fast, but it does the job. It comes with Windowns XP Professional. A bit costly, though, unless you can pick up a copy like on eBay.
    Good luck.

  • Options for running Windows Apps

Here goes - I'm a pc user. Developer to be specific, so I need to be able to run SQL Server 2005/2000 Visual Studio 2003/2005, and other Windows related apps to support my job. However, I'm interested in purchasing an Apple to support my hobbies (photography, etc). They're elegant in design/architecture, etc.
I was really excited about the new MacBook Pro on an Intel platform - with dreams of "dual booting" Windows. Unfortunately, it does not appear that Windows (currently) supports the BIOS of the MacBook Pro - and I'm not interested in "hacking" a solution out. I need this thing to run, and run well.
I've also heard about the VM and have used VM to support development work. However, I've found it to be clunky at best - and would rather pursue alternatives.
So, ultimately my questions are - am I ultimately restricted to having multiple machines if I want a MacBook Pro? Is there any reality to the claim that Vista will be able to support the BIOS standard used by Apple? Should I just forget about it - and purchase another antiquated pc.
Thanks in advance for any useful information. Sean

It is possible that Microsoft will release a Virtual PC for Intel Mac, but that may be some time in the future.
Currently you can obtain a boot loader that will instal Win XP on an Intel Mac. It is fairly straightforward but assumes that you are not a new computer user.
Please be advised: This solution is not supported by Apple. Apple is not preventing people from instaling Windows, however they will not troubleshoot your problems. Furthermore you may wish to consider waiting a bit because the current instal does not contain fan drivers which means that while in Windows you run the chance of overheating your MacBook Pro. Given time this is likely to be fixed.

In the long run it is better to only run OS X, however if you are forced to run Windows the least we Mac users can do is buy Apple hardware and software and dual boot our computers when required to. If I were in your situation I too would rather have a product made by Apple than any other manufacturer.

  • Running windows apps on mac

Does anyone out there have any suggestions as far as running windows based programs on a mac.... I am new to the mac community... Also, what do you guys (and girls) think about parallels?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    6. Last is Q.  Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs.  It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
You should choose whatever method of running Windows that would work best for you. Don't ask people's opinions of what to use here. Do you own research. There is plenty of information you can search out on Google that provides the information needed to help with the decision.

  • Has Anyone tried running Windows Apps on Tiger/Leopard using Crossover?

    Hi,
I had heard that you can run some Windows applications using a program called Crossover.
    Has anyone tried Crossover?
I need to run Qimage on my MacPro

It does work, but it can only run programs that have been converted for use with CrossOver. You need to check their site information on whether the program you want to use is available in converted form.
CrossOver hasn't been verified for 10.5.2, although it is certified for 10.5.

Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Running windows apps without installing XP

So we all know that virtual pc does not work on the intel macs.
I'd rather not install windows xp as a secondary install as i don't have an SP2 disc.
Are there any other solutions? All i want to do is run one or two simple apps that won't run on mac os.
    MacBook 2.0Ghz 2GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You have quite a few options, actually:
    Parallels (http://www.parallels.com/)
    or...
    CrossOver (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/)
Parallels more or less provides the same functionality as Virtual PC, while CrossOver will actually allow you to run select Windows applications natively in OS X. Hope that helps.

  • Unlocked Iphone will not run any apps anymore

    Yesterday Apple unlocked my Iphone.
Since this time no app will run any more.
    Please Help
    I already tried a reset/restore via iTunes
I tried deleting a app from both iTunes and Iphone and the downloading it again.

Ah, missed that you are on a mac.
    Try this:
Launch disk utility, select your hard drive and select "repair permissions". When finished, reboot your computer, launch isync, select reset sync history. Launch itunes, connect your phone, sync. When finished, disconnect your phone & see it this fixes the problem.

  • MacBook will not run PowerPC apps anymore

Recently, I have noticed that none of my PowerPC applications want to start up. I started noticing this after I tried downloading the latest quicktime updater. The updater downloaded, but could not install. Before the updater was installed, I had Quicktime using Flip4Mac by turning on Rosetta for installer, installing Flip4Mac, turning off Rosetta for installer, and then turning on Rosetta for QT. Everything went smooth, WMVs played great, but then QT wouldn't start after I downloaded the QT updater. I had to turn off Rosetta for QT, and since then no PPC apps will work, and QT will not play WMVs. How do I get PPC apps to work again?? Thank you, I appreciate any help!

Thanks for the replies. When I mean PPC apps don't work, I mean, nothing, Google Earth, Limewire, Word, Powerpoint, etc. Only Intel based apps work. Sorry I wasn't so thorough about explaining my problem, it was late and I was frustrated. I also forgot to mention that I have Boot Camp running with XP. This might be a separate issue, but I tried switching to it two nights ago, and XP would not start up. Anyway, I tried Disk Utility, and it did not fix it, but I did not restart either, So, I'll try that. Again thanks for the help and the quick replies!

  • Windows 8.1 Professional x64: Windows will not run Windows Update after fresh install

Greetings everyone.  I'm having a strange issue that I can't seem to figure out.  I'm developing an image with the following specs:
    Hardware:
    Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook Convertible
    Haswell i7
    8 GB RAM
    256 SSD HD
    Software:
    Windows 8.1 Professional x64
    Problem description:
After formatting and partitioning the hard drive (UEFI) with a corporate copy of Windows 8.1 x64, the laptop is booted up in Audit mode.  No OEM drivers or software is installed.  Windows is then activated to the KMS server and verified.
I then connect to a hotspot (no proxy required) and open up IE 11.  I click tools and select Windows Update.  The laptop then searches and searches for updates and never finds any.  I've let it search for over 10 hours.  The laptop never
    returns an error message.
    Troubleshooting performed:
    1.  I've tried different copies of Windows 8.1 - same result.
    2.  I've tried installing the OS with different types of media (external hd and multiple bootable USB drives) - same result.
    3.  I've disable the Windows Update service, deleted the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarted the Windows Update service and rebooted laptop - same result
    4.  I've installed this copy of Windows 8.1 on different models of laptops with no OEM drivers or software installed - same result.
    5.  I've installed all of the OEM device drivers in the correct order and ensured that the device manager is clear of bang signs - same result.
    6.  Date and time is set correctly.
Has anyone else experienced this with Windows 8.1 x64?  If I take a copy of Windows 7 x64 or 8 x64 and install it on this laptop, it updates Windows without any issues.  The problem seems to be with Windows 8.1.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Errors when running Windows App Certification Kit for desktop application

    Hi,
I ran the tool over our application and there was only one area in which it failed. However, all the files it mentions in the log are files that were created by the tool itself!
    The errors are included below.
Can you please advise how I should proceed?

NOTE: If I ask for code, please provide something that I can drop directly into a project and run (including XAML), or an actual application project. I'm trying to help a lot of people, so I don't have time to figure out weird snippets with undefined

  • My iPad will close all windows/apps suddenly without warning!  Any ideas?

My iPad will "shut off" without warning...very annoying!  Any idea why?  Thanks!

Try closing all apps completely and then do a reset and see if that helps. To close all apps : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
To reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
Turning off iCloud and multitasking gestures on the iPad has also been suggested by some people.

Lboger83 do you receive any specific error messages when downloading the Creative Cloud applications?  Please see Error downloading Creative Cloud applications - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-downloading-cc-apps.html for information on how to resolve download errors.

  • Blackboard and Windows Apps

Are there plans to include accessibility to online learning systems, i.e. Blackboard, as well as the MS Windows Office Suite on the iPad?

Blackboard has a mobile app already in the iTunes Store. It's up to your school whether they wish to license the back-end capability from Blackboard.
As to Microsoft's Windows products, that will never happen; it's not technically feasible to run Windows apps on an iOS device. Whether or not Microsoft will ever release iOS versions of their software only Microsoft could say. Initially they said they had no interest in doing so, but they could change their minds.
    Regards.

  • Mount an AFP or SMB then run an app from it

    Hi everyone.
    My problem:
I need to mount an AFP or an SMB share and then run a .app from it.
I then add this to the login items and it runs at login.
The .app can be located on our xserve or windows server.
    I have tried:
    mount_smbfs
But this causes errors in mounting and wont delete the folder it creates for itself and when other users log into the machine it will not run the app.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Matt.

    Hi TT,
Yes I want to add an application that is located on a network share to the login items.
User Accounts are set up in Active Directory.
There is an OD master on our xserve that connects to AD for authentication.
    Kerberos is disabled on xserve.
Guest access can be enabled to the share.
I have tried the following in an applescript:
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    do script "open afp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@SERVER/APPNAME.app"
    end tell
With AFP or with SMB - both don't work.
    Tried another applescript for finder:
    tell application "Finder"
    mount volume "afp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@SERVER"
    end tell
then the terminal command after that to open the app.
    Doesn't work either.
    I'm confused :S
    Thanks,
    Matt.

  • What is the best way to run window xp on a macbookpro17" G4 running OS10.5.

I have a MacBookPro 17" 1.5 GHz running OS 10.5.7 with 1.5 GB Ram and would like to load Windows XP SSP2 so I can run several specific windows programs that are not Mac supported without a dualcore system.

Ok, you either own a MacBook Pro with an Intel Processor, or a PowerBook with a PowerPC Processor.
If your stated speed is correct, then you own a PowerBook, which will not run Windows natively. development & sales for Virtual PC has ceased. The only emulator still around, I think, is iEmulator & is terribly slow on G4s.
Boot Camp does not work on PowerPC Macs.
Please correct your signature & descriptions so we can identify the correct machine. Thanks!
