Will itunes 7.3.1 burn CD's in original CD-RW drive?

I'm still using my old CD-RW drive. Just updated computer to OS 10.3.9. Trying to update as much as might be needed.
Was still using my original itunes that came with my G4.
Will this 7.3.1 version of itunes burn CDs in my drive? One of the download pages said it required a combo/super drive.
Also, thinking about installing a super drive. Any recommendations or words of warning?
Thanks

Hi nameless,-
Start by clicking on the Apple in the upper left corner/About this Mac/ and click the More info...
From There use the Sherlock/AppleCare channel, and type in all you want to know about your model G4. Like "remove optical drive" from "your model"
Sherlock AppleCare channel has always helped me when I'm in a pinch.
Don't post your Serial #, we don't need that.
Simple steps to take when replacing an optical drive is:
Have adequate lighting and a flashlight.
1. Get out all the tools you'll need, such as an assortment of small phillips head screw drivers. Preferably magnetized heads. Set out the replacement drive and look over everything and set it out.
2. Set up your Mac on a nice clean hard surface.
3. Get comfortable and open up your Mac.
4. Always touch the power supply's metal or the metal frame case to discharge any static electricity, try to stay still while working on your Mac. Do not work on a carpeted area.
5. Get familiar with any print outs of instruction from the Apple knowledge base.
6. keep the screws removed organized, or better write down their location.
7. Be patient and take your time when removing and installing the cables and everything.
It's pretty easy. You won't need to pay someone to replace the drive. A diagram will be included with the drive to familiarize you.

Michael

  • Will iTunes ruin my other burning applications

I just purchased a 5G 30 Gig video iPod, but have not yet installed any software. Currently, I use Anapod to load songs on to my 2G iPod. I use CDx to rip CDs, and I burn them (and DVDs) with Nero--all of which work fine. I'd like to keep Nero and CDx for my burning needs.
I've read about a lot of the aggro with the latest version of iTunes for Windows, and I'm worried that it will cause problems with those other programs. I want to use iTunes to download from the Store and to load my new iPod. (I'll be ditching Anapod). So my question is: does iTunes interfer with other burning programs? And is there a way to disable iTunes burning capabilities?
My system is a self-built PC with W2K (SP4) and an Asus P4B533 motherboard. Perhaps this question has been asked before, but any insight I can get before I actually start loading iTunes would be appreciated.

usually, any conflicts that folks might get are related to device filter entries. so if you ever run into anything like that, this resource should be helpful:

  • HT4914 will itunes match save my tagging?

I have changes album names, artist names, genres, album art, etc.  Will itunes match wipe them out for the default original tags or settings?
    Thanks.

iTunes Match is currently for music only. You should be able to re-download apps on your Mini via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on it.
Ringtones are currently a one-time only download from the store, so you will need to copy them from your phone to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases (they will copy over to the Tones section of your library, and your apps other purchases will also be copied from the phone) - you can then sync them to your iPad.

  • If all the songs in my playlist I want to burn are mp3 format, will iTunes automatically create an mp3 CD? I want the CD to be in a format that most CD players can play.

I didn't know I would have to add more. What I need to know is in the title. If all the tracks in a playlist are mp3 encoded, will iTunes assume that I want it to burn an mp3 disk? What I really want is a CD that plays in most CD players everywhere, not mp3. I tried to look up the type of file that is on most commercially made CDs, and I get .cda. But then I get an argument that .cda is a file that marks the gap length and track info, and does not contain the music info at all. Computers are just too **** complex for an old geezer like me. With computers, nothing is what it really seems.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Ken

Don't concern yourself with the type of file on an audio CD - they use their own special format.
When you create a playlist and choose 'Burn playlist to disk' you will get this pane:
Choose 'Audio CD' - that's all you have to do.

  • Will iTunes or QuickTime Player let you burn an mp4 file onto an audio CD?

I want to burn some MP4 videos (i.e., the audio portion only)  onto audio CDs; I guess that would mean converting to .aiff files, right?
Can this be done in either iTunes 10.6.1 or QuickTime Player 10.0? I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8 on a Mac mini, if that makes any difference.
Or do I have to find some third party software to do the conversion and then burn the CDs?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Depends on how you plan to play them back. AIFF can be played on almost any commercial audio CD player. MP3 files can be played on most current CD players. Apple Lossless or AAC could be used if playback is through your computer. The choice is really yours.

Yes, but the work flow may be different depending on which software and audio compression format you use. E.G., QT 7 Pro could extract the MP4's AAC audio track directly to an new file without conversion if AAC is your target format. As previously mentioned, QT X could be use to recompress the MP4 to an audio only AAC file. The free MPEG Streamclip or QT 7 Pro apps could be used to convert the MP4's AAC directly AIFF files. Converted or extracted AAC files could be added to your iTunes library where iTunes could create and burn a "Playlist" of such files to CD using AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, or WAV compression formats dependin on your playback requirements. (Unfortunately, iTunes will not directly extract and reprocess/burn the AAC audio directly from MP4 files already in its library.

  • Why does iTunes tell me the burner is in use?

When trying to burn music discs from iTunes, I'm now getting a message that "the burner is already being used by another application." It's really strange because that's not the case and iTunes burned CDs just fine for years until this past week.
I get the message every time I burn, whether I'm using the internal drive or an external one. I have two external DVD burner drives as well as the internal, and they all produce the same message. Usually, if I try many times by putting the same CD back in and trying again, eventually it will work. But it shouldn't be giving that message at all, so I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem.
I'm using iTunes 11.1.4 on OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 on a Mac Pro. I've never before had a problem burning CDs from iTunes.
I have Toast installed, but not running at the time this happens. I checked to see if a Roxio background helper app was perhaps running that I didn't know about, but nothing is listed in the console nor in my Login Items list. There are no apps running that might have anything to do with burning discs, so I'm totally puzzled.
That isn't the only problem, either. When I'm finally successful in getting iTunes to actually succeed, when it burns a multi-part disc, it always rejects the second CD, claiming that I need to insert a blank disc, even though the one I'm putting in is indeed blank. The only workaround is to take the playlist and eliminate all the tracks that were already burned, then creating a new disc from the remaining tracks. Then, of course, I go through the whole "the burner is already in use" message until after several attempts to insert the disc and have it spit out again it finally works.
The message comes up whether I put the disc in before clicking the "Burn Playlist to Disc" menu item, or if I wait until it tells me to insert a blank disc. But when it successfully proceeds to the "Checking media" step, it's usually when the disc is inserted before starting the burn.
I have to suspect that some kind of helper app is the culprit but for the life of me I can't figure out which one. I've seen other reports of this same message and none of those people are likely to have some of the same specialized apps that I run like Drobo or ScanSnap Manager or ChronoSync. I'm kind of willing to try a process of elimination but the prospect of continually removing an app at a time and rebooting is not something I look forward to. Could take up the better part of a day, costing me hundreds of dollars in lost time, so if anyone has an inkling of where to start I would really appreciate it.

I hadn't checked this, so I disconnected the external drives and tried again. Same thing.
FWIW, I had already tried deleting the itunes preference files and that made no difference.

  • ITunes 11.4 The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry.

    27-inch, Late 2009
    Processor 2.66 GHz Core i5
    8 GB memory
    Software OS X 10.9.5
    iTunes 11.4
Can not burn a playlist in iTunes 11.4 to a CD, upon completion of the burn operation get error message, "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry."  Receive this message using 2 different external drives that are Apple compatible. 1. is a Pioneer SuperDrive that I had replaced from a previous Mac in a OWC enclosure, 2. the other is a OWC 8X Slim Portable USB 2.0 External. After receiving the error message I can re-insert the disc into the drive and it will mount the disc and it will list all the songs with the correct size, but none of them will play. iTunes then comes up asking me if I want to import the CD, at this time iTunes has a (not responding) status in Finder. Can burn from finder with no problem, only have issue in iTunes.
    Background
Last year I took the iMac to the local Apple Store 3 times and they determined the optical drive was defective and replaced it, the last time even replacing the cable to it. When I attempt to burn playlist from internal Superdrive it states it can not burn due to media errors. I have tried Memorex, TDK and PNY  media with the same results. I thought purchasing the OWC Slim Portable USB 2.0 External would resolve the issue.  If I put a commercial audio CD into the Internal Superdrive it will not mount and will eject it, if I insert the commercial audio CD into the external drive it will mount and play. Now the extended warranty is expired on the iMac and I don't know what next to try.

After multiple attempts to both find an answer to this problem or to fix it myself I've given up and switched to a Windows PC. The same media works just fine at maximum write speed with no special tricks needed. I got my iMac specifically to manage my photographs and burn images for friends and family. It has been nothing but a big disappointment to say the least. To read messages saying I need to lower my write speed or buy more expensive CDs is just laughable. Unless I see something major change I'm sticking with my Windows PC.

  • ITunes 7.3.1/Burning Data CD's or DVDs

I've been burning DVDs and CDs for a long time now through iTunes. But it seems that since I've updated to the new 7.3.1 verson of iTunes, I can't burn Data on either my Mac or my PC. For my Mac, it says that the burn speed is too fast. Even when I've lowered it to 1x. It won't burn at all. For my PC, I was able to burn DVDs for a brief time after I updated to 7.3.1 but now I get an error "the attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (261)" I've been using the same DVDs and CDs for years and never had a problem. I also gave my co-worker a disc that failed in my machine and he was able to write on it with no problems.
My co-worker and I have the same PC and he is able to burn DVDs fine and he updated his iTunes as well. Does ANYONE have an answer for me? I'm stumped and there doesn't seem to be anything written up on this error.

I also had some trouble getting my point across the first time. I clearly explained that I know how to do a backup. I am writing to you about an ERROR MESSAGE, not a how to procedure. From that point on, they were quite understanding and they stopped talking down to me.
I had also written about the 261 error. Although they never gave me a solution, they did write a few times with some temporary suggestions.
At least they assured me that the backup errors were well documented and that a new version was being worked on. They even went so far as to tell me last night that the version was coming out today.
They obviously need a better way to communicate to the whole community, at one time, in one place. I was happy to get their ear and know someone with the ability to fix it, was fixing it.
As I said before, 7.2 will be on my computer for a very long time. It has everything I want and need and it works perfectly. That is MY SOLUTION. I have no desire to be an unpaid volunteer to test their software.
We all know that 7.3 had to be released, ready or not, to correspond to the IPHONE release. The wealth of error in the latest version are directly related and not a surprise.
    I wish you well.

  • File name punctuation WILL cause MP3 and DVD burn errors – workaround?

OK, I’ve seen TONS of questions about problems burning MP3 format CDs and DVD. I’ve been having this problem for quite a while and today I just got ****** off enough to do some deep research. I seek to share my finding and suggestions for work arounds.
    THE PROBLEM
iTunes can burn regular CDs since the song file name is not actually put on the CD. The CD or DVD burner work for burning audio discs and with other applications. All the burn preferences are set correctly and have been validated. But when you attempt to burn an MP3 CD or DVD (for backup, transfer or for player that play MP3 discs), iTunes may do the following:
Checking media (iTunes will ask: “You have inserted a DVD. Are you sure you want to create a Data DVD? answer yes, it’s a blank DVD disc in a working DVD burner)
    Checking playlist
    Burning disc… initializing
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (xxxx).”
    THE CAUSE
Many times the error is due to song, album or artist names with unacceptable punctuation in them. iTunes does not tell you why and the error message and Google searches and Apple support/discussion forum details are sketchy… but in most cases its “illegal” punctuation in the song name, artist or album. I isolated at lest the apostrophe ‘ there are probably other illegal name punctuations too.
The cause my be explained by Apple following ISO or Joliet file name specifications or file name length specifications for CD or DVD discs. But since this appears to be undocumented (to the iTunes user) there is a need to understand the restrictions to allow error free disc burning.
    THE CHALLENGE
Even if the playlist name does not have punctuation, if ANY playlist song name/artist/album does, the DVD burn will fail. Removing the offending songs from the playlists results in a successful burn but hey, I WANT those other songs too!
    POSSIBLE WORK AROUNDS
Changing actual song file name – even if you change the name in iTunes (Get Info, Info, change name, artist, album) the actual song file names are not updated and continue to have the punctuation error resulting in a burn failure.
It appears that the actual file name needs to be changed. This can be a challenge. If you change only the file name you need to add modified file back into iTunes and the old file link is now broken. This is a bigger problem if that song file is in multiple playlists (the old ones are broken and the new one needs to be substituted). This is a REAL problem if you have 2,800 songs with an ‘ in them (like I do).
LETS WORK TOGETHER AND SHARE RESULTS
I’ve seen many, many unanswered questions about iTunes CD and DVD burning problems that will likely be solved if we can collectively develop and document a workaround. So, here is
    THE QUESTION
What is the best way to rename (or retag) MP3 song files to eliminate punctuation and update iTunes and playlists so these songs can be burned to CD or DVD without violating the undocumented illegal punctuation restriction? The work around may differ for OS X vs Windows users so help on both would be appreciated.
Thank you all in advance for your help!

been searching myself to create my own cdg for use in universal karaoke players. Kjams appears to offer the most hope for all I want to do. although there's something new now called Aria which promises to do a bunch of stuff for 79 $. Otherwise, all that I want to do as listed by the original poster, would cost me Kjams lite, plus the burn plug in is extra, plus I'd need the kjams producer as I would be building a cdg by adding the synced lyrics to something I've removed the vocal from, on Audacity program. if I go with Kjams, those 3 softwares, it will cost me 150, while I'm so jealous all those PC karaoke singers have free software for karaoke they can download.
I've been buying my cdg discs at 1.99 a pop, but they don't have special songs I want to perform. Aria for Mac might just do it all but I don't need the "scratch" sound they are pushing. that makes me steer away from the software.
experimenting with the Imac 10.6 idvd movie quicktime might work. I made a few cdg but have not tried them in the club karaoke machine yet. I added the lyrics to tuneprompter which is a free software that lets you add and sync the lyrics to the music with the spacebar. thats fun. but it's all in experimental thing so far. I know Kjams does not let you add lyrics and sync them yourself. you are supposed to import cdg to kjams that are already available and pay for them. in this case I want to find my own special tunes. good luck to you. there's one other thing but it's expensive. buying software which turns your mac into a windows platform by partiioning it and you start up in one or the other. that's also about 100-150 software.

My iTunes just started not burning my playlists to a CD saying iTunes needs to be reinstalled.  I do not  know how to reinstall with out that pop-up request.  I checked the latest version under help and I have the latest version.  I do not know how it could have created an error that will not allow me to burn my playlists to CDs.

  • Replaced DVD-ROM with 18x MCE Superdrive. Will not complete a DVD burn!!!!

updating my gigabit ethernet dual 450 G4 powermac. swapped out the original dvd-rom drive with an 18x SuperDrive from MCE. Running Panther 10.3.9 with all updates. Machine has upgraded 120GB hard drive, 512 RAM.
Driver loads from MCE install disc. Using Toast 7.1.2 to burn a data DVD-R using automatic "best speed" setting. Drive revs up and "writing lead-in" appears in Toast window, but no blue in the progress bar. Toast then says :Writing disc", and displays a time (usually 1:40), but does not count down. Eventually, the drive becomes silent and the burning process just hangs there. I've let it hang for about an hour. Tried burning a DVD-R with 20MB data, up to a disc with 2GB data, and same thing happens. I then abort the burning process, having to Force Quit 5 times to close Toast, then restart. OS prompt appears as Toast opens, saying "disc contains no volumes blah blah, eject, ignore etc). I eject the DVD-R and ALWAYS on the write surface, there is about a 1/2" of data that appears to be written, but the disc is obviously unreadable. I have wasted 7 out of the 10 free DVD-Rs that came with the MCE drive. Used PatchBurn 3 and it says drive is already supported. System Prof says burning is "vendor supported".
Tech support on the phone asked about master/cable settings. Superdrive is master (as was original DVD-Rom I removed), and I kept intact the Zip 100 drive underneath, which has no jumper plug on either of the 3 sets of jumper pins.
I ran the burning process: 1.) with Zip Drive unplugged from shared cable, SuperDrive still set to master. 2.) with Zip drive connected and set to slave, SuperDrive still as master.
Same burning problem with Toast 7.1.2 as well as the older 6.0 version.
I managed to however burn a CD-R of data in both Toast versions, and disc burning appears to be supported in the iTunes burning preferences.
What else. The drive is listed in Toast as DVD-RAM. And apparently tech support has told me this is an LG 18x SuperDrive, and I was instructed to load the driver from the install disc for 20x SuperDrive. The driver froom the 18x install disc (the obvious one I thought, since it is an 18x burner), did not enable burning according to System Profiler and iTunes. I used PatchBurn 3 to create a driver successfully, but had the same burning problem.
I'd rather find some answers here, than have to call MCE support in Irvine California and use up minutes on my cell!!!
Please, help. I'm sure I can send the drive back to macmall.com. Can anyone recommend a SuperDrive that will actually work in my G4 Dual 450?
    Thank You!!
    marc

Today I bought that very same model LG - branded, black front from a local PC retailer. It was cheap, bulk without any package or cables,in fact it was only 5 Euros more than a CDRW...
    Apple System Profiler says : DVD-RAM GSA-H55N, vendor Aopen/LG, atapi , firmware id : 1.03 , internal disk id : 0.
I have a copy of Toast Titanium 6.05 -> upgraded for free at Roxios website to 6.1.1 and succes - I have burned a 550 MB CD-R with Toast under my beloved Jaguar OS 10.2.8 at full speed settings in virtualy no time ;.)
I am bidding on ebay right now for a copy of Apples ilife (2003) which contains idvd3, the only version which will run on my specs.( idvd4 is some 700Mhz minimum ) . I will try tomorrow how about patchburn in the Jaguar edition will make this drive compatible with Finder's or itunes burn buttons.
Anyway, Toast 6 seems to be able to do the job, and it can make DVDs and Video-/ Picture and what not else CDs too. I did not doctor with the speeds settings, I left all to "best possible" and it burnt in very little time a disc I can read on my Tiger Mac too.
The G4 PCI tower ( 1999 - 2000 ) is built on around the same mainboard as the blue/white G3, it has internal 100 MhZ IDE-bus, so it works even this old and I would expect any G3 tower wo also support that combination of Software/OS/Burn Apps. Those old machines can do wonders, let alone you need the Software from back when it was "High-End". - Of course I could put Tiger and ilife 06 on it, but then it would get ridiculous slow and unproductive.
