Will leaving the charger in hurt the battery on the New MBP 17"

I rarely need to unplug my new MBP 17", but with all the talk about battery problems, I wonder if I should unplug it from time to time and not just leave it plugged in.
Right now its been plugged in for a 1.5 weeks... While I don't think this could hurt the battery, I thought I would ask...

http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. *Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time.* An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month."
http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
" A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges."
"Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate."

This last link is the best summary of good advice on maintaining lithium-bsed batteries that I have ever seen.

  • Intriguing about the battery in my new MBP

    Hi everyone
I got two days ago my first mac wich is a macbook pro 13" from 2010. I've red all there is to read about the use of the battery on the Internet and on the Apple website and so far I have only done complete charges with it. (I wait until the battery is to 0% and then i plug it until the battery is at 100%).
I can use my macbook for about 6 hours without using wifi (ethernet, plus some videos watching).
I have downloaded the widget istat nano to see how is my battery and apparently with 6 cyles, I have a battery health of 100% and 5802m).
First of all I wanted to know if the numbers are ok ?
Finally I wanted to know if I use the battery correctly so far ? Should I let it plug longer ? Some people are also saying that it is not good to let the battery fall under 5% before plugging it. Is it true ?
Here we go, thanks for all your answers and sorry if some questions are dumb, I just want to keep my mac as long as I can and not bother Apple directly with my questions if they are stupid.
    Thanks

Eh, batteries are fickle things, gooey chemistry and all that. Factors include time since the battery, not the battery pack was manufactured, temperature, temperature variance the battery's been exposed to and any thermal shock, drain amount and cycles, quality and purity of chemical batches used in manufacture, and for all I know phase-of-the-moon! IMHO the only thing more "voodoo science" in electronics than batteries is antenna design!
But you're right I seem to have lucked out on the battery in my new MBP 17", the one that came with my late-2008 Unibody MB lost 5% of it's health in the first few days of use and then got on the expected decline thereafter. Expectation and usually specification is 70-80% of capacity after 3 years. The annoying thing with Lithium batteries is that the clock starts ticking on their capacity as soon as they roll off the production line, no matter if they get used or not! Tip: Make sure any replacement Lithium battery you get is "fresh" and definitely not used (I'm looking at you eBay!)

There has been no official notice as yet.    We here are simply not able to answer that question.
It is known that there have been some production problems but it seems things are moving now.   All the same, it's doubtful if it will be this year.

  • I want to burn my old cd's and have them in my iTunes library. Is there some "I" software that I can buy that will treat the new songs like "purchased" songs (i.e.: available for synching on all my devices)?

I want to burn my old cd's and have them in my iTunes library. Is there some "I" software that I can buy that will treat the new songs like "purchased" songs (i.e.: available for synching on all my devices)?

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
'With iTunes in the Cloud, the music you buy from the iTunes Store automatically appears on all your devices.1 And for music you haven’t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. iTunes Match is built right into iTunes on your computer and the Music app on your iOS devices.2 It lets you store your entire collection in iCloud, even music you’ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes. When it’s in iCloud, it’s available on all your devices. So you can enjoy all your music anywhere, anytime — on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.'
It costs $24.99 p.a.. Songs you've ripped from your CDs which are also in the Store will be recognized (hopefully) and be available: if they aren't in the Store you can uploads them. The limit is 25,000 songs (purchases do not count towards this limit). This is not part of the 5GB free storage.
Incidentally, just to clarify the terminology so you don't get into confusion, you don't mean 'burn' (make a CD from existing files) you mean 'rip' (copy files from a CD onto your computer).

I was trying to boot my i5 MacBook Pro with an external HD that has Leopard. I was able to select that HD for start-up. However, after the chime, it gets stuck at the apple logo and the computer gets very hot.
I'm thinking that the new MBP's don't like Leopard.

  • When will come the new raw version update for Adobe Lightroom 4 with Nikon D750 support?

    Hello Adobe,
When will come the new raw version update for Adobe Lightroom 4 with Nikon D750 support?
    Best regards
    Frank

There won't be an update for Lightroom 4. The only way you can work with your D750 raw files is to use the free standalone DNG converter to create DNG copies. If you want to be able to work on the NEF files then you will have to upgrade to Lightroom 5. Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plug-in. Everything is part of the Lightroom program. If you want to stay current with Lightroom then you need to follow the update/upgrade path. That means purchasing each new major version of Lightroom or subscribing to the creative cloud plan.

  • Only having 4 hr on the new MBP 13inch I bought yesterday...

I am really concerned...I bought the new MBP 13 inch yesterday and saw terrible battery life. I thought I would give it a day, but today, after charging it fully, it only showed 4 hour left after I unplugged for 10 minutes, and now 3:48 left after unplugging it for 20 minutes.
I went to support.apple.com to schedule a support call, but the ridiculous interface asked me to pick what type of problem is this related to, but ONLY GIVING ME TWO CHOICES: 1. iTune 8 or 2. iTune 9. *** is wrong w/ their support site? Also it didn't know I have my laptop, so I had to type in serial number manually. After choosing my laptop, yeah it told me I could only pick iTune 8 or iTune 9 as my problem. This is inside MacBook Pro support age!! WTFFF???
Then, once I filled up the drop down list (I had to choose some ridiculous category unrelated to my problem), it told me I can schedule a call back at a later time. It wouldn't even call me back! But it had the decency to tell me "you can always schedule a call back..." ***??? Is this because I am behind a corproate firewall? I got stuck in some crazy loop too on developer.apple.com yesterday, but I doubt today's problem is related to VPN.
Lastly, no I am not running my PC crazily. Not playing any media or using any hardware or connected to any device. Only have wifi on, browsing the web, and brightness at 50%.
I prob shall bring this in but I am flying out tonight I really don't want to spend an hour driving to the store and back...HELP!

    Hi lyziwyg,
Charge life varies immensely depending on what you are doing with your computer. THings like screen brightness, the use of bluetooth, external USB devices etc etc also have a substantial impact. A computer that will run for eight hours running a word processor and email software, may only manage two or three if you are watching lots of vids, connected to blue tooth, using the iSight Camera, running DVDs or CDs etc etc.
Have a look at Neuroanatomist's excellent FAQ on batteries at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1764220 for some good advice on looking after the battery in your new computer, and read Apple's own advice at http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html too.
While you should calibrate your battery when it is new, and then every couple of months thereafter, it is actually best NOT to run Lithium batteries right down from full charge too often. You will find that regular light usage is what they thrive on - use them every day when convenient for an hour or so, but try to avoid the "charge it up overnight and then run it flat every day" approach that some people use. That approach used to work well with the old "NiCad" batteries, but it is really very bad for Lithium ones.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • My take on the new MBP

    Hi all,
I thought I would give you guys and gals my opinion on the new MBP.
Firstly let me explain that I bought my MBP to replace my old PB G4 17" 1.67Ghz model, so as you can probably imagine it's a fairly big upgrade for me.
I have also been using Apple stuff for 20 years and have spent a small fortune on their products.
I am a web designer and a photographer, an amateur photographer I hasten to add!
The main software I use on my machines are Flash, Photoshop, Aperture, Dreamweaver, Final Cut etc. Without these I am lost.
Okay down to the nitty gritty, I have been reading forums all over the net and heard a lot of people moaning about these new machines, I do appreciate it may not be to some people's liking for whatever reason but please note this is just my opinion on the new MBP's.
I have the 2.4Ghz version with no RAM upgrade as yet.
My first opinion when getting it out of the box was 'Wow', these machines really do look nice, the colour of course is the same as old and it's difficult to explain why they look so nice, maybe it's because they are thinner, maybe it's because they are moulded, I really don't know but I do know that with most Apple products you cannot appreciate them until you've seen them in the flesh.
Opening the lid, well this was a revelation it looks absolutely stunning, simple, elegant and the screen (I know what most people think) is absolutely superb. Let me talk about the screen a little, now I know why there are different complaints about this and it generally boils down to calibration issues for pro photographers and people who need to print professionally. I of course had the matte screen on my 17" PB and can tell you now that it really used to annoy me when I was outside as I could not see the thing at all. On many occasions I wanted to sit out in the garden during the summer and do some work but was unable to. I have a computer upstairs in my office and use my MBP downstairs in the living room, this allows me to carry on doing work and still chat with my girlfriend downstairs. One of the major problems I do have is that the sun (especially in the winter months when it's much lower) shines directly through the window and beams nicely onto my MBP. With my PB I used to have to close the blind (much to my girlfriends annoyance) otherwise it was impossible to work with but with my new machine I can see the screen perfectly without closing it. In fact I am sitting in that very position now with the sunlight beaming through and it's no problem. I'm not going to say there is no reflection at all but it's hardly noticeable and I can definitely say with hand held on my heart that the screen is fantastic whether you are in direct sunlight or night. My girlfriend has the MB (the previous model) and she has a glossy screen, I'm not sure what Apple have done but the glossy screens on these new ones are much better.
    The Keyboard.
I know some people don't like the chicklet keyboard but I have no problems with them. I actually prefer them to the older style but I guess that's personal preference. The backlight is absolutely fantastic, it's one of my favourite things on this machine. My old PB had a backlight keyboard but due to the silver keys and white lettering it was near on impossible to see at certain angles, even when looking at it directly it was nothing to write home about. The new backlight on the MBP is just fantastic, I can't say enough good things about it, you have to see it for yourself.
    Trackpad.
Mmmmm, really love the look and the size, it makes other trackpads look totally archaic. However I'm not too sure about the whole clicking thing. I am not having problems that others have mentioned about the click not registering or taking time to register. To me the click works as well and as efficiently as a standard button but it is harder to press down and noisier. Apple mentioned that they spent many many hours just getting the click sound right but I think they could have done much better with this. It's the only thing on the machine I am not totally convinced about and could definitely be improved but it's certainly not a deal breaker.
    Battery Life
Seems okay at the moment, I probably get around 3 hours with it but as with most Apple products this improves over time.
    General Use.
I have had it since launch and am over the moon with it. The speed is fantastic and it does exactly what it sets out to do. Whatever anyone says (and yes it is expensive) this IS (in my opinion) a brilliant piece of kit. It's fast, it's responsive and it looks fantastic. You would be hard pushed to find a better laptop on the market but of course you'll have to pay the price.
I urge you all before passing comment on these new MBP's to go and check one out and see for yourself how good they really are. I know there's nothing like testing one at home when doing your own work but I'm sure that you will be surprised at just how good these machines are and that some of the comments you may have thought originally will soon be forgotten.

Sweet! I cannot wait for mine to arrive this week. i actually went
to the apple store to check it out i can not wait for its arrival. i was very impressed
Im going from a 1.25ghz PB with only 512mb ram to the new MBP with 4gb
of ram. Talk about a major upgrade (yes!!) As a fellow web/multimedia designer
I know I will benefit from this upgrade. I really hope to be more productive
with having dreamweaver, photoshop, flash etc all open at once. A sImple RAM upgrade
could have solve some of my problems wIth my current PB...but this new machine is just
beautiful and durable and will really help me work easier. My current PB will be my side project and back up for now. 5 years I've waited to upgrade........ and glad i did.

  • Using Alu Power Adapter with The new MBP Unibody 2009 ? (Both 85 Watts)

    Hi,
Can i use the Power Adapter off my Aluminium MBP 2.5 GHz,15" intel core 2 Duo (MacBookPro4,1), with the new Unibody 15" 2.66 GHz(MacBookPro5,1)?
    They are both 85 Watts.
The Power adapter for Aluminium is :
    Input : 100-240V - 1,5A 50-60Hz
    Output : 16,5-18,5V, 4,6 A Max
    Delta Eletronic
The Power Adapter for Unibody is :
    Input : 100-240V - 1,5A 50-60Hz
    Output : 18,5V 4,6A, 16,5V, 3,6A
    LiteOn Technology
    Thanks for The Lights.

    That's correct, I meant to type 85W.
Can anyone advise what the impact will be of using older 85W adapters with the new MBP's that come with a 60W adapter?
Is there a shorter battery life in the long-term, or is the new battery designed to cope the same with either of these power adapters?

  • Fact: Motion 3 crashes on the new MBP's.  Anybody find a solution yet??
