Will Mac flash drive icons show up in Windows?

So I have a project where I need to create a custom icon for a flash drive (to be used as a marketing giveaway). The device has to work on both Macs and PCs.
If I format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and replace the default icon with the one I've created, will it show up when mounted on a PC?
Or, do I need to create an AUTORUN.inf file, save the icon as an .ico file, and so forth?
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

If I format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and replace the default icon with the one I've created, will it show up when mounted on a PC?
No. Windows cannot natively read MacOS volumes.
The device has to work on both Macs and PCs.
Then format it as FAT.

  • Can't see flash drive icon on desktop

Why doesn't my Sandisk flash drive icon appear on my desktop when I insert it into my USB port? Thanks.

    1. It needs more power than the USB port provides. Try plugging it into a powered hub or a port on the computer itself.
    2. It is formatted with an incompatible file system. Check to see if you can select the drive in Disk Utility.
    3. The Finder preferences for viewing disks are set to not show this type of device.
    4. The file system is corrupted or the device is kaput.

I have Photoshop elements 10 and have been trying to copy albums onto a flash drive to show slide show on my TV. 10 does not have a flash drive connection, so I am trying to put it on my harddrive. When I hit the export to harddrive or anything else, I get a message saying it is trying to locate and reconnect missing photos, goes into a search mode and displays the identifiers of the located images. When I try to follow the directions for reconnecting I get nowhere. Can you help?

  • Mac hard drive icon

Mac hard drive icon is an ipod icon why is this so and how do I change it back?

    Or try this:
Select the HD - and Get Info (Apple-I).
Click on the Icon in the Info Pane you just brought up.
    Press Apple-X.
That should revert the icon to the default resource file .icns icon normally associated with that drive.

  • Unlocking my iPhone 5s (running 7.1.2)either by Touch ID or passcode the screen will quickly flash black before showing the Home screen.

    HEY , please help.
im currently running on ios 7.1.2 and unlocking my iPhone 5s either by Touch ID or passcode the screen will quickly flash black before showing the Home screen. You know its a pure random thing , like a second. Its annoying . Help please , do i need to restore i hard resetted it twice .

You may have fragmented RAM on the phone; that second is the time it takes to move apps around in memory to make room for the Springboard (the internal app that displays the Home screen). To fix this do the following:
While on the Home screen double-press the HOME button.
For each app displayed, swipe up on its screen image to close the app and free its memory
When all apps have been closed this way reset the phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears
If this doesn't fix it you should restore the phone using iTunes. Please let us know if this solves it, however.

  • How to change Flash Drive icons (mine shows as a default)

Why does This keep happening ? on every mac my Flash drive has the icon but on mine it shows like this

I always have converted .png files to .icns files. You can do this for free from iconverticons.com. Click on Use iConvert icons Online.
I think the following might work when using the .png file.
Open the .png file in Preview
Press Command+A to select the entire image
Press Command+C to copy the selection
Do a Get Info on Macintosh HD and click the thumbnail icon to select it
Press Command+V to paste the image

  • Will infected flash drive infect my mac?

    Hi all,
I wasn't sure where to post this....I have a PC running XP that was infected with a nasty redirect/rootkit virus. I was running Norton AV & Malwarebytes but it didn't help & I can't get rid of the thing. After a week of trying, I gave up & disconnected from the internet & copied my photos & a few other files to a flash drive. Question 1: is the flash drive now infected? Question 2: If it is infected, would it transfer the virus to my macbook if I tried to transfer my pictures? I figure the PC is a goner, I just want to save my photos & a few other things.
    Thanks for any help!

    1: Likely infected.
2:  Not likely to infect the Mac, unless your Mac is running Windows® like through Boot Camp.
3: "in my world combofix.exe is very usefull.... in addition to malwarebytes. many things seem to have rootkits on em and malwarebytes wont get em."
"Malwarebytes got it 99% of the way, Security Essentials pushed it over the edge, into a ditch, covered it in diesel, and lit it on fire."

  • Flash Drive Icon acting funny

    Hello,
I use a flash drive San Disk mini Cruzer 512, and it always showed as a removeable media. Today it came up on the finder as a folder icon with no ejection symbol, clicking on it gave me a "could not be found" error. Yet my backup utility would read the contents fine when the finder would not display them. When I pulled it of the port, I got a device removal error. I trashed the plist Finder file and did a relaunch, now the drive comes up as a hard drive! I would think this a problem. Any one out there know. A second flash drive I have works normally. Do these things wear out?
    iBook G4 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I can't reproduce that behavior, so I have no idea if this will help, but you could try going to your home/Library/Caches/com.apple.finder folder, and delete the file there, and then logout or restart.

  • Flash drive stopped showing up in Finder sidebar

My flash drive still works perfectly, except for the fact that it stopped showing up on the sidebar under DEVICES. It's a little pesky having to look it up in my desktop when I should be able to find it quickly in every FINDER window.

Go to Finder?Preferences>Sidebar and make sure that External disks is checked.

  • Flash Player Icon Shows Instead Of Favicon

    Hello all,
I have my site with only google ads enabled which are generally image text ads. But for some reasons I keep getting the flash player icon whenever I visit it. With other sites i got the site favicon as usual. This is happening with Firefox only. Can any one share me the solution for this. I'm really concerned about this.Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    with best regards!

That's the indication in Firefox that one or more plugins are loaded on the page. You will see it on every site that uses Flash.
The favicon in Firefox is on the TAB, not on the address bar. It's a security feature to stop people using a padlock symbol as a favicon.

  • USB Flash drive not showing on DT

    Hi folks,
I received a USB flash drive with 2 GB capacity made by Super Talent (www.supertalent.com- look under Aluminum flash drives).
Upon plugging it into the G5's USB port (i've tried them all) I get a "Cannot recognize- Initialize/Ignore/Eject" message. Clicking Initialize brings up Disk Utility which sees the drive with a capacity of..wait for it..2 Terabytes! Here's DU's info:
Name : SKYMEDI USB Drive Media
    Type : Disk
    Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : SKYMEDI USB Drive Media
    Media Type : Generic
    Connection Bus : USB
    Connection Type : External
    USB Serial Number : 03
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : External
    Total Capacity : 2.0 TB (2,199,023,255,552 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 0
Selecting HFS+ (journaled or not) or MS-DOS then clicking Erase gives me a spinning beach ball requiring me to Force Quit DU.
    My config: G5 DP 2.0, 1 GB ram, 10.4.6
    Any thoughts?
    G5B DP2.0 & iBook366SE   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Alu 20-in Display

    hey there scan,
I gave the drive to a friend who has an iMac. Samething occurs: drive does not mount, DU erroneously reports 2 TB capacity and coughs up the beachball seconds after clicking on Erase to format it. He's on 10.3.9 while I'm on 10.4.6.
All the ports on my G5 are in working order as i use printer/scanner and iPod w/o problem.
Think the drive is going back.

  • [SOLVED] Flash drive not showing up in /dev

When I plug in a flash drive to the USB 2.0/3.0 ports on my computer, nothing changes in /dev. I don't see any /dev/sdb either.
lsusb shows the flash drives, and /dev/bus/usb/ contains the correct files. fdisk and lsblk don't show the flash drives.
Here's the dmesg output for plugging a flash drive into the USB 2.0 port:
    [13146.969084] usb 4-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci
I'm trying to mount the flash drives manually, but I can't if I can't find the device. What's going on?

The version number were different, and rebooting fixed the problem. I see the flash drive in /dev and in /run/media. Thanks guys.
One more question. What program is automounting my flash drive in /run/media?
EDIT: I'll mark this question as solved and make a new question.

The camera connection kit can only be used to import photo/video files form a camera, SD card or USB flash drive. You can't import other types of files. You can't export any type of files using the camera connection kit.

  • After using TM My flash drive doesn't work on windows ! what should i do?

    Hi everyone !
i Bought My Macbook Pro 2 Days Ago And This Is The First Time That I'm Using A Mac.
today i tried to make a backup of my Mac Os and i thought maybe i could use my flash drive , so i connected it and i opened the TM and it asked me that it should erase my flash drive so it can back up the files on it , but after doing all that stuff i found out that my flash's capacity is not enough for a complete backup, but now i cant use it like i used to, and it doesn't show up on my windows ... now how can i make it work normal ?!

it doesn't show up on my windows ...
If you mean 'wndows computer'... You will need to go to your Applications/Utilities folder and run 'Disk Utility'.
Plug in the flash drive, locate it on the left and click on the name to select it.
Then erase/format it using MS-DOS. When done, close Disk Utility and eject the flash drive.
Check it for proper operation on a Windows machine.
You can also erase/format it on a Windows machine or in a digital camera, as an example.
You can also format it for Mac OS, but I recommend keeping it Windows format for compatibility.
    Good luck in any case.
