Will Macbook late 2008 aluminum work with N wireless router?

I see in the tech specs that it is a/b/g compatible. Will it work with an N router?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The short answer is 'Yes', it will work with an N router.

Why the 'draft' notation?
The 802.11n draft specification was originally introduced in 2003.
It was not finalized by IEEE until September 2009.
Details here, but fair warning: The IEEE pending/finalized/withdrawn 802.11 spec chart is enough to make your eyes bleed!

  • 320GB really the max upgrade for MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum Uni)?

So, I've got my MacBook. It's the 13.3" aluminum unibody, from late 2008. Everything in it is stock, except I've upped the memory from 2GB to 4GB. The harddrive is still the original 250GB, which is pretty much full. I've been told by Apple that the highest capacity I can put into this one is 320GB, yet I see tons of posts from people who have put 500GB/1TB drives in and was wondering how THEY can do it, but I can't.
    Any suggestions/advice?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    It's listed as a MacBook. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1651#link2
As you can see, Apple officially supports 4 GB of memory in the Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook, but you can install 8 GB of memory without any problem. You can buy the memory in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

  • Replacement keys for MacBook Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody

Is there any way to order replacement keys for the Late 2008 MacBook Aluminum Unibody model?
I ordered and received a new Enter and Shift key from numerous Apple retailers, but they do not fit properly. They only fit and snap correctly on the MacBook PRO Aluminum models.

Make an appointment at your local Genius Bar. I had a bad key a few months ago and it took all of 30 seconds for them to run to the back and replace it.

  • T42 will not work with new wireless router

Purchased a new router, works great with my T61 and x200 but not with my  older T42.  The old router worked fine with all 3 thinkpad computers. I am told that the T42 has only an 11mps modemcard inside, and therefore I am out of luck. I have to purchase an external usb modem or slow down the router for the other machines.  Is there nothing I can do with my T42 settings to get onto this new router?  Steve

Posting the 7-character model number of your T42 would help a lot...
You can replace the wireless card with a newer bg or abg one, and it should work fine with a newer router.
For a list of applicable cards, look at this page under number 14:

  • Can't get airport express to work with new wireless router

I just swapped out a linksys wrt54gl for a linksys E1200 wireless router on my home network. My PCs and iPads, and TV all made the switch to the new network fine, but the airport express isn't working. All I want to use it for is to transfer iPad audio to my home speakers. but my iPad  AirPlay shows the old Airport as an option, I can switch to the Airport, no sound comes out the home speakers, then the iPad reverts AirPlay back to iPad.  This model Airport just has power, USB, and LANA ports, so it doesn't seem like it would be complicated. A CAT 5 cable goes from the airport WAN port to one of the ports on the back of the new wireless router. What did I overlook?

I thought I'd jump in here with you network experts for some help with a related networking problem.
Equipment:  iMac 24-inch, Early 2009 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2 MBP w/Retina Display; AirPort Express version 7.6.4 (Conncected Using: DHCP; Router Mode:  DHCP and NAT); Comcast/Xfinity Gateway 1 Modem w/2.4 GHz WiFi.
#1.  Comcast forced me to change modems to their Gateway 1 saying mine was at “End of Life.”  Previously, my home network was set up with AP Express and worked fine using my iMac as a server.  After installing the Gateway 1, I could not get my network to work after repeated calls to their support, online chats, trial and error, reading community chats and articles, etc.  I put the Comcast modem in passive mode using the “Bridge” setting and re-established my network with my AP.  I’m using my iMac as a server for file sharing with my two MBP’s.  The network isn’t recognized in sleep mode and will not wake from sleep and I can’t find it or Connect to Server when the computer is asleep.  I’ve tried all combinations within the Energy Saver/Screen Saver/Security preferences.  I’ve reset the SMC and other like resetting to factory defaults. How can I fix this and what are the correct settings for my home network to function again with my AP Express?
#2.  TimeMachine stops doing backups when the computer is in sleep mode, understandably because I’m not making any changes on the iMac that need to be backed up.  But using my laptops on the network, I am making changes in shared files that are hosted on the iMac that I would like backed up.  I cannot get the schedule feature to work to wake up the computer long enough to do a backup nightly because, as a security feature, I log out after 30 minutes of inactivity. I understand the schedule doesn’t work unless you’re logged in.  Is there a way for me to make this work?
    Thanks!

  • Appletv worked with old wireless router but now wont with airport extreme

I purchased an appeltv and mac mini in December. Connected everything through my old linksys wireless router and everything worked great.
past weekend I purchased a macbook and so I decided to get an aiport extreme also and keep it all in the family.
well i now have my mini, macbook, printer everythings sharing printers and streamin itunes back and forth....but now my appletv wont sync.
I cant get the appletv to popup in either of my macs itunes.
    any ideas???

If the OP has used both routers then this is correct.
I suspect though that the OP has simply swapped out the router for the new extreme. In which case they may need to delete the tv's from the itunes prefs and relink them (the pass code thing). Streaming is initiated from the tv, syncing from itunes, if streaming works and syncing doesn't it may well be that the tv sees the itunes library but itunes doesn't see the tv, or at least doesn't see it as the same device it's linked to.

  • Macbook Pro won't operate with Netgear wireless router

In my setup, the macbook pro's physical IP address has to be configured in my router and that seems to be entered OK. However, the macbook won't work wirelessly via the router. The router uses 128bit hex WEP key and the macbook at first seems to accept the key even though it fails to function. When I go back to check the settings however, it seems the macbook is requiring a WEP password, not a key. Could this be the cause of my problem? How can I sort out this problem please? TIA .... Greg

First try with out a password. Then try a 10 digit WEP key.

  • Rapidshare link not working with WRT110 wireless router

I am trying to download using rapidshare but after the countdown timer reaches zero and the download link button appears, i couldn't get the link for the download file. This happens when i am wireless but when i connect my laptop directly to the linksys WRT110 router via LAN cable, i can get the link for the download file without problems.
What settings do i need to do to fix this?  The rapidshare says it might be due to a rotating IP address or something. Only the rapidshare website is having this problem, other downloading sites doesn't seem to have this problem.
i am using a WRT110 router, with no security, on a wireless connection on my laptop on windows vista, using firefox.

Tried Internet Explorer 7, its the same problem. it still takes some time before i can get the link for the download file. Although i sometimes can get it faster with IE than with firefox.
Any solutions to this problem? I still thinking its the Routers configuration that has to be modified to solve this problem.

  • Do I have all the parts to replace my HDD with a new SSD on my Macbook (late 2008)?

Hey everyone, I am trying to figure out if have all the parts to replace my hdd with a new ssd on my macbook (late 2008 aluminum).
I just bought a crucial mx100 SSD and plan on replacing my mac HDD. I have the appropriate screwdrivers, and a bootable OSX on a usb drive. I also purchased a sabrent usb 2.0 to sata/ide hard drive adapter.
How do I replace and install OSX on my new SSD?
From what I read here are the steps I'm planning on taking.
    1) Detach the old HDD
    2) Attach new SSD.
    3) Turn on computer and use the bootable usb drive to install OS X.
Does that work, I think I read somewhere about maybe formatting the SSD before I can use the bootable usb. Any input or help would be awesome. Thanks.
I'd prefer to do a clean install of yosemite and not carbon copy my old HDD

  • Macbook late 2008 installing windows 7 ultimate with 200gb disk space?

Hi guys, due to the great response from my last question I would like to know something.
I am going to install ultimate windows 7 into my macbook late 2008 aluminum body 13.3 inch with 5 gigs of RAM, is it wise or possible to give windows 200 gb of hard disk space without any problem? Also, I have two pny 4 gb RAM modules, one is installed in my mac alongside the original 1gb module that came with my computer.
Will I be able to install the 2 4 gb modules into this computer using windows 7 ultimate?
    Thanks!

    Hello Robejarp
For your MacBook, the maximum that you can install is up to 4gb, so that would be 2 2gb sticks. Check out the page below for more information.

  • Upgrading MacBook Late 2008

I’ve had my MacBook 13″ Late 2008 now for three and a half years, and it has been used every day since I bought it, and with every passing day, it’s getting slower and slower. I’ve checked with every forum out there to find methods for speeding it up, but nothing works! I’m therefore convinced my hard drive is failing. I want to get a new one, and better memory than the standard 2Gb while I’m at it, rather than buy a whole new MacBook. Luckily, I have a few pennies saved up and want so splash out to get the creme de la creme of upgrades. Any advice on the latest gadgets? Both for hard drives and memory? Can SSD's be put into the late 2008 laptop? Thanks, C

You are also able to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
