Yes, PROVIDED the external enclosure supports those drives. Older enclosures may not go larger than 2.2TB.

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • Can Time Capsule support an additional external hard drive?

A friend of mine is using Airport Extreme and has both his printer and external hard drive hooked through it accessing both wirelessly. The Apple site says this works great with Extreme but does not say you can do the same thing with Time Capsule. I called our local store and she wasn't sure. Both Extreme and Time Capsule have one USB port so no matter what, you have to split the USB(I know this works with Extreme). All my music is on an additional hard drive and it would be great if I could access it wirelessly. If anyone has done this with time capsule please let me know. I want to purchase it but if not I will go with Extreme.

Can Time Capsule support an additional external hard drive?
    Yes.

  • If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

As others have said, the answer to your question is a big YES.  Formatting a drive will delete everything!
To keep your data, yet reformat the drive for optimal Mac compatibility, you will need to:
    1) copy your files to a different hard drive (I would recommend two different locations if you value your data)
    2) repartition/format the external drive
    3) then copy the files back to the external.
You haven't given details but if you need the external to ONLY be compatible with the Mac (and no longer care if if can be read by Windows), then you will want to partition the drive using the GUID partition scheme, and format as the (HFS+) "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" filesystem.  You can do so using the built-in "Disk Utility" application on your Mac (in the Applications/Utilities directory).  Here are instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5845
If you need the drive to be compatible with both Mac and Windows computers then please post that so someone can recommend a solution for your specific needs.

Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

  • Final cut pro X not reading events in external hard drive

I know this has been talked about in one way or another but I still am just not understanding. Any help I can recieve will be much appriciated.  Just purchased Final cut pro x and I have an external hard drive that I have some events on. FCPX will recognize the external hard drive but says there are no events in the external hard drive.  I checked 2 other external hard drives as well and all three FCPX will not read the events that are in the hard drive.
    Thanks
    Brian

Brian, I notice that I have to have whatever drives connected before openeing FCPX; so sometimes when you plug in a USB3 drive or a Thunderbolt drive on the fly, even if though it mounts, it won't be recognized until you re-launch FCPX.
Beyond that, it's important to make certain that you name the two folders in the attached drive exactly: Final Cut Events, and Final Cut Projects, and they should be on the root directory of the connected drive(s).  On all of my systems, if you have multiple drives connected with identical projects, FCPX actually picks one and warns you that there are two different identical projects and tells you which one it opened.
If you take the time to provide Tom with what he's asked, he is extremely helpful and will likely identify the issue.

    iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
    okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved (i.e. the movies) in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive. you may also want to point iTunes media folder location back to your local iTunes folder.

no. airport express does not support the airdisk feature. you'd need an airport extreme (or time capsule) for that.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

  • If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?

If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?  And would it ask me if I want to initialize (thus erasing it) or eject the hard drive like the OSX 9 did?

I was trying to follow this thread because I was curious about the OS 9 installation - until I realized you have another thread going about the very same subject, albeit with a different subject line.
FWIW: it is best not to double post - things get far too confusing after a while.

  • My new iMac will not allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives - what can I do?!

I just purchased the new late 2013 iMac 27" and all is wonderful except it will NOT allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives which is a HUGE problem because I'm a professional photographer & I won't be able to access my images unless I can sort this out.  I know I can purchase a new giant hard drive but i'd prefer not to because I have about 12 TB of data which will be expensive & time consuming to transfer & I'd also prefer not to have that much info tied into one device.  Ultimately I will need to get a Drive with multiple bays but I'd really like a short term solution that works for the drives I currently have.  Any help is GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!!

Why can't you daisy chain your drives. If it's because the iMac only has a Thunderbolt port and you have Firewire drivers purchase the Thunderport to Firewire adaptor from Apple: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • Imac will fire up perfectly until i attach an external hard drive

imac will fire up perfectly until i attach an external hard drive including an ipod then it freezes at plain white screen.  I have attempted to hook and unhook different externals (I have four) I have also attempted with ipod (80 gig classic).  I have cleared PRAM (while unhooked from externals)

I have to go to work so I can't really test every drive to be sure but yesterday it would not fire up with any of the externals.  It appears that this may have solved the issue.  I'm mystified at how that could get changed (boot set up preference) I did as you said and it seems to work.  Thank you very much!

  • My macbook Pro doesn't recognized my Seagate External hard drive

Okay I know some one has already posted this queston, but I am having issues as well. I have a 3TB Seagate external hard drive, and it accidnetly got unplugged without me ejecting it first. Now I can't get my mac or any computer to reconize it as a drive. It still runs, I can feel it running, but it is not connecting as a drive. I have an NTFS software on it, so I can read and write to the drive from both Mac/PC. I'm worried that everything on there got erase. Please can anyone help me out or help lead me to get so that my Seagate can be reconized as a drive?!!!!

Oh I also had a message that came up when I tried to reconnect it to my comptuer. This is what the message stated:
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
and my only options I have are
    Initialize..., Ignore, Eject
what are my options of getting my data restored? I don't care so much about the drive, I am concern about my 2TB of data on there. Please anyone help me with this!!!!! I am open to suggestions to get my data back.

  • How do I backup the files on to my Macbook Pro 2010 from a damaged external hard drive?

Awhile ago my macbook pro crashed and I had to make a bootable disk of Mountain lion no problem here but I accidentallly deleted all the files off of my hard drive from which i recovered using a PC computer and disk drill. After it had recovered all my files i later tried to put these files on to my macbook computer and disk utility views the drive as damaged and needs to be repaired but in order to do this i have to format it and change the partition and what not. When i try to copy/burn to a CD the finder stops the operation and says that "finder cannot complete the operation because file _catalog cannot be moved" and just recently when i plugged my drive into my computer the sharing permissions say read only. I know that my files are there because when i right click and press get info i see that 5 gb are used but the folder is only showing me 2gb what do i do to get my files onto my computer?
My external hard drive is a WD 1 TB my passport and the partition thats givving my this trouble is formatted to be MS DOS FAT32
    I have parallels Windows 8
I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model

Use Data Rescue on the Mac and out the recovered files to another external drive.
Just grab your users files, the rest you trash. That's all you can do.
    Good Luck

  • Will my Pavilion dv5224nr notebook support a solid state hard drive?

I am currently running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2005 (Reporting Version 2002); I have 1 GB RAM installed on my Pavilion dv5000; Model dv5224nr.
I am considering the followin upgrades to my system:
I would like to install a 120 GB Solid State Hard Drive,
Upgrade my Memory to 4 GB
Upgrade my Operating System to Vista Ultimate, 64-bit
Will my system support these upgrades?
    Dave

Your laptop will only support a SSD drive through a 1.8" or 2.5" USB external hard drive enclosure. You cannot put one inside the laptop itself so your setup would be intresting if planning on putting a OS on a SSD. They are great for extra storage and you could still run windows off of a external but I do not suggest it as it's not worth the problems windows will most likely give you.
First thing is to get that 1GB upgraded to at least 4GB for any version of windows - these days all apps are memory hogs and 1GB is making your machine push it's limits while not being fast or burning hot. Vista is a good choice for OS and I wouldn't attempt Windows 7 on the dv5000 series due to the specs.
    Hope this helps, good luck...
