Will Migration Assistant work with an external drive?

I'm upgrading the hd in my Powerbook and for various reasons have the new drive in an external enclosure. It's got a fresh OS installed and all I need to do now is copy all the data from my old drive that's still in the Powerbook to the new drive in the external enclosure. What's the best way to do this? I know I shouldn't just copy everything over and I got error messages using Disk Images. A friend suggested Migration Assistant but that only seems to want to work with complete computers, not external drives. I've got a G5 in the office too that I can employ if needed.
I want to keep all my settings and prefs intact as I'm told Migration Assistant will do.

As long as the Firewire hard drive is a bootable drive for Mac OS X it should work with the Migration Assistant. These two companies offer that kind of drive:

While it doesn't matter for the machines you quoted, if you choose to migrate to a newer Intel Mac, it won't work. This article explains what to do in that case:

Also, there is no such thing as a "Fresh install". This tip discussions what installation options exist:

Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html

    It is supported.....
This is NOT correct. Please do not post false information on the forums.

No. Your iMac doesn't have Thunderbolt. You'll need a Firewire or USB drive.

  • Will Final Cut work with 13 1TB drives daisy chained togerher

Will Final Cut work with 13 (1TB) Firewire 800 drives daisy chained (78 feet) together? Has any one done this? If so were there any problems?

    Thanks for your advice guys.
I did run into problems, had to start computer with only my pre-existing SATA and FireWire 800 drives (connected to the back of my Mac), then I made sure the 14 FireWire 800 drives were turned off, attached the FireWire 800 cable to the front of my Mac, turned on the drives from closest to furthest in the drive chain (6'cables between each drive) and all of the drives came up on the desktop.
When I opened the FCP project that had media associated with the 14 drives I got the spinning wheel of death. After rebooting and restarting the gang of 14 I thought I would try to open one of the drives on the desktop, again the spinning wheel of death. Will move to plan B - 9" cables, plan C is installing the drives into two drive towers.

    Connect it directly.

  • Will Upgrade Assistant work with MS SQL Server

We have ODI installed om MS SQL Server 2005. Current version of ODI is 10.1.3.5 and would like to upgrade to 11.1.1. My question is can we use upgrade assistant to create 2 instances of ODI that has old 10g Repository DB and 11g Repository DB or is Upgrade Asssitant work only when repositories are installed on Oracle 11g.
    Thanks,
    Giri

It's possible, but it's tough, you'll have to edit the ODI database to change the connection string to one that the new ODI likes, and the java driver to one Java likes.
For SQL Server 2005, the JAVA_DRIVER it wants is: weblogic.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
    The connection string it will want will be like : jdbc:sqlserver://<host>:<port>;selectMethod=cursor;databaseName=<database_name>;
Hope that helps, let me know if you want more info.

  • Working on an external drive

    1. What should I look for when looking for an external drive to capture to and edit from?
    2. When working with the external drive, do I just need to Set the Scratch Disk, Video Capture, Audio Capture, Video Render, and Audio Render to the root of the external drive, or should I make a folder on it and Set it to this? Is there anything else that should be done?
    Thanks.

    Hi again Steve,
if you are only editing DV and HDV then a FW400 or better FW800 is what you are looking for.
    Two good ones:
    http://www.CalDigit.com/FireWireVR.asp
    http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-RAID2.cfm
For more demanding formats like uncompressed SD, HD etc. you are looking for something like eSATA drives.
(Look into the other pages of the web site I suggested for good models)
See the link below for help in setting up your scratch disk:

  • I am wondering about transferring my pc date to my new iMac.  I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?

I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?  I'm going to be trying to move the date to a new imac 27' with fusion drive.

the following set of instructions is a little longer, so you might want to print it out and have it handy
    Step 1 - PC
If your PC already is connected to the Internet, hold down the Windows button on
your keyboard and simultanously press R. Into the opening window enter "cmd" (without
the quotation marks). A command line will open, enter "ipconfig" (again without the
quotation marks) at the prompt. Now find the section labelled "Ethernet-Adaptor" and
note the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway on a sheet of paper
If your PC is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP address.
    open Network and Sharing Center
do a right click on Ethernet and select Properties
in middle of the screen there is a box labelled "This connection uses the following items"
out of this box select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
click on the Properties button in the right corner
Into the window "Use the following IP address" enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default-Gateway is the IP-Address of your Router. This value is needed for internet connection, for the file sharing setup only this value can be left empty.
    Step 2 - Mac
If your Mac already is connected to the internet, it is likely that it has automatically receive the necessary parameters from your router and therefore should be in the same network as your PC. To be on the safe side, you can check this by
    open System Preferences
    select Network
choose Ethernet from the panel on the left side of the window
    click on Advanced
    click on TCP/IP
compare the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway with those you wrote down earlier.
If both PC and Mac have identical numbers in the first three parts of the IP-Address, you are set.
If your Mac is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP-Address as well.
In the TCP/IP window you have just opened select "Manually" from the drop down menu "Configure IPv4:"
    Enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet-Mask: same as with PC
    Default-Gateway: same as with PC
Step 3 - Activate File Sharing on PC
    open Control Panel
    select Network and Internet
    select Network and Sharing Center
on the left panel select change advanced sharing settings
in the middle of the new page enable turn on file and printer sharing
Step 4 - Activate File Sharing on Mac
    open System Preferences
    select Sharing
set check mark next to File Sharing (green circle appears on the right side next to File Sharing:)
    click on Options:
set check mark next to Share files and folders using SMB
in the listbox under the text Windows File Sharing make sure there is a check mark next to your account name
Step 5 - Create a share on your PC
In Explorer select the folder you wish to share
do a right click on that folder and select "Share with"
    choose "Specific people"
a new window opens. there select your Windows username (usually the first in the list)
if you plan to copy from Windows to Mac only, it would be sufficient to grant Read permission only, but, since most likely you are the only person to access that share and certainly do not plan to sabotage yourself, Read & Write permission is ok too.
    finally click on "Share"
Step 6 - Create a share on your Mac
Once the check mark next to your account name is set (see above) your home directory is automatically set as a share.
Step 7 - Connect your PC to your Mac-Share
do a right click on the network icon which resides on your desktop or in the left
    panel of every Explorer window
    Select Connect Share
in the text box next to Folder: enter \\<ip-address-of-your-mac>\<your-osx-username>
if you are using the same username and password on both Windows and OSX click on "Finish",
if not set the check mark next to "Connect using different credentials" afterwards click on "Finish" A new window will open where you enter username and password that you are using with OSX
Step 8 - Connect your Mac to your PC-Share
hold down the command key and press K simultanously or in Finder click on Go in the menu at the top of your screen and select "Connect to Server"
in the Window that opens enter smb://<your-windows-username>:<your-windows-password>@<ip-address-of-your-PC/<y our-windows-username>
    or
smb://<ip-adress-of-your-PC/<your-windows-username> you will be asked to enter your Windows username and password in popup window
Now you have both computers connected to each other. Each will provide you access to your home directory of the other computer. Open a second Explorer or Finder window with your local home directory and start copying

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • Will Time Machine work with my networked hard drive?

I asked this question this question a couple years ago https://discussions.apple.com/message/9961900#9961900 and was wondering if there was an update as to whether Time Machine will work with a networked drive?
    Will it work?
Does Apple officially support this method?
I'm using Chronosync now, and it's good, but every once in a while it'll hickup.
    Thanks so much

Nothing has changed, other than the fact that we are seeing a lot more posts from users having probems who have tried this unsupported method of backups.
Apple is prety clear on this in their support documentation. They say that you cannot do this.
Results vary with users who try this anyway. Some have difficulties immediately with corruption issues, others have successful backups for a few weeks to even a few months before they have difficuties. Count me as  one who thought they had somehow beat the system, but after 4 weeks, things collapsed.
Forum expert Pondini has an appropriate saying about this issue, which I am sure I am not quoting exactly:
There are two types of users who attempt Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme....those who have problems, and those who will have problems.

My Mac hardrive Crashed and had to get a new one, sadly my iTunes wasn't on my external hardrive. I have all my songs on my iPhone, will iTunes Match work with my songs on my iPhone then, i download them on to My Mac. Will This work? Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The easiest thing to do would be to sign into your iTunes account on your computer, connect your phone and sync. iTunes should copy anything from your phone that isn't already in your library on the computer.

  • I was unable to access migrate assistant to reinstall my hard drive. I didn't know if it would work but I used the time machine restore button that opens up in the space movie. The computer said it would download it to "Volumes". Now I can't find it.

I was unable to access migrate assistant to restore my hard drive. Out of desperation and ignorance I opened up Time Machines space page and selected my most recent backup and pushed restore. The system accepted it and said it would intall in in "volumes". I was unable to figure out what that meant but I went a head a tried it. The download took four hours and then puff it was gone and so was my data. I can't find the back up anywhere. The only thing I think it might be is that I had named the hard drive a different name than the original (don't ask me why). Have any ideas?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

  • Need to boot new macbook pro (yosemite 10.10) with an external drive (snow leopard 10.6.8)

need to boot a new macbook pro (yosemite 10.10) with an external drive (snow leopard 10.6.8). Toshiba canvio 1TB, USB 3.0. Have formatted it for mac already. Actually works when chosen as the "boot drive" on my 2009? macpro desktop with snow leopard 10.6.8. OS. I still need to work from FCP 7.0.3 as we have many projects from the past that must be "re-edited" from time to time. The macbook pro sees the drive from the systems preferences as a "boot drive" but nothing happens when it is selected. Have also tried from start up, holding option key until drives appear for boot. Will only go as far as the grey screen with apple logo when selecting external drive.

    Try using a virtual machine.
    Parallels
    VirtualBox
    VM Fusion
Snow Leopard server for use with the above. Call 1-800-692-7753 and order part number MC588Z/A. Cost is $19.99 + sales tax and shipping.

I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMac so that I can do work with Elements 13 via the exteranl hard drive? Thanks tb

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.
