Will more RAM make my Macbook Pro run faster/smoother?

I've been scowering the internet for information about the best way to improve the performance of my Macbook Pro. Not sure who to listen to.
Here's my situation:
I have MacKeeper, which I run to rid my pc of extra files and junk.
I am running Parallels 9 and Windows 7 Ultimate (which I use daily for work purposes).
I more often than not run many programs simultaneously (which I think is the reason for its lag).
I am contemplating purchasing the max amount of RAM possible for my computer. Not sure what that is. 16GB, I think.
Hardware Overview:
Model Name:          MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
  Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:          2.26 GHz
  Number of Processors:          1
  Total Number of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          3 MB
  Memory:          5 GB
  Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz

Get rid of MacKeeper if you wish to improve performance: How to Remove MacKeeper. You can install up to:
Maximum Memory
8.0 GB
Memory Slots
2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
You do not have sufficient memory to run OS X and Parallels w/Windows. A minimum of 8 GBs is required for decent performance.

ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

My macbook is running super slow. The spinning beach ball appears every thirty seconds and it's annoying. I ran the verify disk permissions and verify disk twice and nothing helps. Please help me

Verily only checks the disks. It does nothing beyond that.

  • Will the 2.4GHZ, 13" Macbook Pro run Starcraft 2?

Will the 2.4GHZ Macbook pro run Starcraft 2, and if so run it at decent settings? Thanks.
    The recommended PC requirements are:
Hard Drive Space :4 GB free hard space (Beta)
    Operating System :Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7/Mac
Processor : 2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
RAM :1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7
Video Card :128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card

    Hope this helps.
I have a 13" MacBook Pro (late 2009 model) with 2 gig of ram with the Nvidia 9400M.
I'd say it plays OK on Low. Framerate drops considerably with lots of units, but still playable. Medium setting seems playable with campaign but the framerates seems to be in the high teens and I probably would not recommended it for multiplayers. The new 2010 models should do slightly better but don't count on setting it to High or Ultra.
In Low setting, Gfx-wise, it looks a little bit better than StarCraft 1 (Original). Don't expect a WOW factor.
For me, I have it installed on a much more powerful machine (PC) with all setting jacked up to max and it looks pretty sweet I'd only play on my MacBook if I'm away from home.
Good Luck Hope to see you in battlenet

  • Want to buy more ram for my macbook pro. What to buy?

    +Model Name: MacBook Pro+
    +Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo+
    +Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz+
    +Total Number Of Cores: 2+
    +Memory: 4 GB+
I am looking to buy more ram for my macbook, but I don't know what to look for. Do I have to buy 2x 4GB and get rid of my old ram or I can buy 2 x 2GB and use them all together?
Also, same with HD. I need more HD as well. Can I install another harddrive as well?
    Message was edited by: Strato222

There are only 2 slots for RAM. So, you'd need to replace one of the 2 GB sticks with a 4 GB stick for a total of 6 GB, or replace both for a total of 8 GB.
Yes, you can replace the HDD with a larger one as well. There are instructions in the manual.

Will this work for my macbook pro? Will macbook pro support 4 Gig or ram?

MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It will work fine, but as the other poster stated the price is high. You can purchase the same memory at DataMem for $126.00.
If you have a Core 2 Duo Mac you can install 4 GBs of RAM (two 2 GB DIMMS) but only 3 GBs will be usable. The remaining 1 GB resides in an address space currently used by the operating system and thus not available to the user.

  • Will adding more ram to my Macbook Pro make it faster?

So I have about mid-2010 Macbook Pro and after all these OS upgrades throughout the years (currently running OSX 10.9.5), it's starting to run annoying slow but still useable. My specs on this Macbook is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of ram. If I upgrade my ram to 6 or 8 GB will my Macbook run a lot more faster? I use my Macbook mostly for entertainment purposes such as web browsing, movies and music as well as for school mainly Microsoft Powerpoint and Word. Also, if I were to upgrade my ram is it as simple as popping out the old ram and installing the new ones? Thanks.

    Hi kidrobot123,
Thanks for your question.  Think of Random Access Memory (RAM) as the amount of information your computer can think about at any one time.  Your operating system requires a certain amount of memory for basic functions.  Every software program that you have open needs memory as well.  So, increasing the available memory is one of the things you can do to improve performance.
The resource below explains how to do it.  I've highlighted the section of the article that pertains to your Mid 2010 model.  Click on the link for more details.

    Additional notes
For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.
    Removing or installing memory
Warning: The internal components of your MacBook Pro can be warm. If you have been using your MacBook Pro, wait ten minutes after shutting down the computer to let the internal components cool before continuing.
Step 1: Remove the bottom case
Shut down your MacBook Pro. Disconnect the power adapter, Ethernet cable, USB cables, security lock, and any other cables connected to the MacBook Pro to prevent damaging the computer.
Turn over your MacBook Pro and remove the ten (10) screws that secure the bottom case. Because the screws are different lengths, note the screw lengths and locations so you can replace the screws correctly. Put them aside in a safe place. Lift off the case and place it to the side.
Touch a metal surface inside the computer to discharge any static electricity from your body.
Step 2: Remove existing memory (if present)
Push the levers on the sides of the memory module in an outward direction to release the module from the memory card slot. The memory pops up at an angle. Before removing it, make sure you find the half-circle notches. If you don’t, try pressing the levers outward again.
Hold the memory module by its notches and remove it from the slot.
    Remove the other memory module.
Important: Hold the memory modules by their edges, and do not touch the gold connectors.
    Step 3: Install memory
Align the notch on the gold edge of the module with the notch in the lower memory slot.
Tilt the card and push the memory into the slot.
Use two fingers with firm, even pressure to push down on the memory module. There should be a click when you insert the memory correctly.
Repeat this procedure to install an additional memory module in the top slot. Press down on the module to make sure it is level.
Note: Make sure you install the memory according to this illustration, with the gold contacts inserted almost completely into the connector.
Step 4: Replace the bottom case
Replace and tighten the ten screws you removed earlier, making sure to put the different length screws in their proper locations.

To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, then click Displays.

Let's take this one step at a time... what you've posted can be useful, for the right problems, but it's not helpful much in determining how you can speed up your MacBook Pro.
First, which model do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011") and which version of OS X are you running? How much RAM do you have installed?
Downlaod and run EtreCheck and post the results.

  • How do I add more RAM to my macbook pro 15 inch late 2008 model?

I am wondering if I ma able to add more RAM to my 15 inch MacBook Pro from late 2008. It currently has 2 slots each with 2GB of RAM each. Am I able to change those out with higher amounts of RAM for each slot? Or is this thing maxed out and i'm out of luck? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Adding more RAM to my MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and need to add more ram. can i, and if so, what kind should i get? what's the most I can add? recommend any non-apple brands like kingston? (since it'd be cheaper and i can have a friend install it)
    thanks!

Yes you can, up to 4 GB, you can also use Kingston, Crucial (which I've used on two notebooks and my MacPro and PowerMacs, OWC, etc.

  • Will the ram from a "macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo" work in a "MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7"

I have a 2008? MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB ram.  Can I use 2 GB ram from the old machine in a new MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7 ?
    /bc

    Very likely not.
RAM gets improved over time like everything else, so if the RAM is too old it won't be compatible with newer machines.
TO confirm, use Crucial.com and punch in each machine, then read the RAM requirements and specifications, if they match, then your good.
But I'm willing to bet they won't be beause of the age difference between the two machines.

  • How can I make my MacBook Pro work faster?

    MacBook Pro
    13-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
I'm not sure what should I do. Should I upgrade certain parts? Should I do something with the software?
I am lost. I am not familiar with CPU knowledge.
    Help. Please. Thank you.

Your particular model can handle up to 16GB of RAM - I would suggest at least 8GB as the 'sweet spot' for current and future versions of OS X.
You could also upgrade to a SSD to see a real speed increase - see -> Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.
Both of these upgrades are jobs that you can DIY. There are tons of videos online showing you how to install both. No need for the pros - just two screwdrivers and you can accomplish the upgrades.
    Good luck,

  • Will more RAM make photoshop run better

    Hey everybody
I am thinking of upgrading to 2GB of RAM, i dont really no how this will help my computer, but if it does, will it make Photoshop run nice and smooth, or does RAM have nothing to do with that.
    Thanks everybody

More Ram will make everything run better including Photoshop. I run CS3 on my MacBook and it works great. As cheap as Ram is I would suggest you get as much as you can afford.

  • Running Contacts makes my MacBook Pro run slowly

As soon as my Contacts is up and running the machine grinds to a halt or runs v slowly. What is wrong?

Please update your profile. You're not running Contacts on Mac OS X (10.6.8).
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • What upgrades would make a MacBook Pro a gaming laptop?

I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro, or MacBook Pro with retina display. I am wondering if there are any upgrades that specifically help with gaming?

    nz.jcantrell wrote:
is there anything that I could do to make it better for gaming? I've heard it's ok to game at medium-->high settings?
Again that depends on the specific game, since different games have different requirements. An older game with lower system requirements may be playable at higher quality settings than a newer game with higher system requirements.
    Given a 13" MacBook Pro:
If a game needs more RAM, a RAM upgrade will help.
If a game needs more video RAM, a 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks 10.9 will dynamically allocate RAM to video from the main system RAM according to this Apple document, and you don't have control over how it does that.
If a game needs a dedicated GPU, that is not available for the 13" MacBook Pro.
