Will more RAM make photoshop run better

Hey everybody
I am thinking of upgrading to 2GB of RAM, i dont really no how this will help my computer, but if it does, will it make Photoshop run nice and smooth, or does RAM have nothing to do with that.
Thanks everybody

More Ram will make everything run better including Photoshop. I run CS3 on my MacBook and it works great. As cheap as Ram is I would suggest you get as much as you can afford.

  • Will more RAM make my Macbook Pro run faster/smoother?

I've been scowering the internet for information about the best way to improve the performance of my Macbook Pro. Not sure who to listen to.
    Here's my situation:
I have MacKeeper, which I run to rid my pc of extra files and junk.
I am running Parallels 9 and Windows 7 Ultimate (which I use daily for work purposes).
I more often than not run many programs simultaneously (which I think is the reason for its lag).
I am contemplating purchasing the max amount of RAM possible for my computer. Not sure what that is. 16GB, I think.
    Hardware Overview:
Model Name:          MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.26 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          5 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz

Get rid of MacKeeper if you wish to improve performance: How to Remove MacKeeper. You can install up to:
    Maximum Memory
    8.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
You do not have sufficient memory to run OS X and Parallels w/Windows. A minimum of 8 GBs is required for decent performance.

  • FAQ: How do I make Photoshop run faster, or How do I increase performance?

    Why doesn't Photoshop run faster?
There are many factors that contribute to the responsiveness of Photoshop. From hardware to software, there a nearly an infinite number of combinations that can boost or hinder Photoshop as it tries to work. Considering factors like how much RAM you have only begins to scratch the surface. Then you have to look at how fast the RAM is and how fast the motherboard will be in supporting it. A computer can only run as fast as its slowest components. Additionally, the hardware resources must be split between all of the running applications. And while you may only be running a web browser at the same time as Photoshop, what about all of the applications running in the background? Security software such as antivirus remains hidden, operating behind the scenes, but it still takes up CPU cycles and RAM. And what about the files you are working with? What are their pixel dimensions? File size on disk? Number of layers, smart objects, styles, and adjustments?
To start, though, you must make sure you meet or exceed the minimum system requirements:

What about Photoshop taking advantage of the power of my video card?
With each new release of Photoshop, it will take more advantage of you GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), which can process display information much faster than your CPU. You video card also has its own separate RAM (known as VRAM) for storing this information. However, not all video cards are equal, even if they have the same amount of VRAM. There are different display processing technologies that all video cards do not have access to. These include technologies like OpenGL, OpenCL, and Shader Model. And these technologies have different versions that your video card may or may not have.

  • Will More Ram stop the GB 08 painful slow down

Will More Ram stop GB 08 from running painful slow ?
I had 3GB of ram and GB on some songs GB would become painfully slow when it came to deleting notes, perhaps 30 seconds to execute the command.
The same with start and stop and many other functions like solo ect, I added two more GB of ram and it did not change this lack of processing problem.
In GB perfs I have Automatic set for all three catagories in the Advanced section
    Any ideas?

It's true that more ram will make garageband run better, but I'm afraid that's not true in your case. I have a 2 year old macbook that had the ram upgraded 1 to 2Gigs and GB did run faster under heavy loads but I would say your processor and OS are maybe a little outdated if you're running GB 08. Then again maybe its something else but you have more than enough ram in my opinion.

  • Will more ram increase my performance?

I'm running Logic Pro 7.1.1 on a Powerbook G4 1.67 with 1 GB of ram installed running a fair amount of sample libraries and effects. When I check the Activity Monitor under system memory I get the following:
    Wired: 108 MB
    Active: 600 MB
    Inactive: 300 MB
    Free: 13 MB
Since I still have a decent amount of inactive memory, does that mean that more ram would not affect my performance? Or will more ram help out with system overloads?

i'm always careful in wholeheartedly saying 'yes' when people ask if more RAM will give more performance.. while of course it will in almost every case help things along, sometimes quite dramatically, I think it's important to be realistic about what it actually does.
it's easy to have the misconception that more RAM = more plug ins on some kinf of linear scale -- I had 2GB, so now with 4GB I should get something like double the performance, right? just as long as you're clear why this isn't the case, then that's the main thing.
I think since the days of CPU cards like protools TDM, the confusion is out there that adding RAM is like adding more DSP. so you just have to be careful that you understand what it's doing any why it can free your system up to do a little more. you can indeed see decent increases if your machine was struggling along before, given what you were trying to get it to do. or, it may just be a subtle thing.
IMO the best way to think of it is this. your machine has the capacity to perform up to a certain level. when you start getting it to do a lot of things, you will start creating a hindrance to it performing as fast as it can as soon as there are moments when it doesn't have enough RAM to do it. this amount will be different for everyone, dependant on your own use. so, the best thing you can do is remove the bottlenecks, and you'll best let your machine go as fast as it will go.

  • Will more RAM help handle large Excel files?

    Hi everyone,
I know this message may be better suited to the Office for Mac Forums website, but the site hasn’t been able to validate me as a new user so far (it's been weeks of trying!), and I’m therefore unable to ask a question. So I have to resort to annoying you here.
I run Excel 2008 (12.1.7) on a 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008) with 6 Gb of RAM (OS 10.5.6). I encounter a lot of problems working with big files, such as a 385 Mb file comprised of over 600,000 row and 50 columns of mostly data (only a few columns are filled with simple formulas).
After loading the file (which took quite a while), the Activity Monitor indicated that Excel was using 1.12 Gb of Real memory an 2.11 Gb of Virtual, while 3.66 Gb of RAM was free. When I then attempted to create a PivotTable with this data, the amount of memory used by Excel gradually rose to 1.94 Gb of Real an 2.93 Gb of Virtual (2.85 Gb of Free memory was still available) while reading the data. At this point I then got a message stating that there’s not enough memory. I had to resort to breaking the file up into smaller ones to analyze the data, which is quite annoying.
I was told that being a 32-bit application, Excel 2008 was limited to handling 4 Gb of RAM. But I thought that 4 Gb being way more than the size of the file on disk, and having 6 Gb of RAM on my machine, I shouldn’t have any problem working with it. Obviously I was wrong. Can someone please clarify what’s going on here? Would more RAM significantly help?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, I bet the Windows version of Excel is better. I think it’s definitely time to try it.
When you say “having 8 DIMMs”, do you mean filling up the 8 memory slots, or having 8 Gb? I believe I remember seeing that 10 Gb was the sweet spot, with all 8 memory slots occupied. Is that right? And what brand of RAM do you like currently, still OWC?
    Thank you Hatter.

  • Will more memory make Day of Defeat source playable under boot camp?

i have a 2.0ghz macbook with 1 gig of memory. if i upgraded to 1.5 gigs, do you think it would make a difference in gaming? in day of defeat source, i get 40fps on a simple custom made map. if i play any other maps, i get 9fps steady and my latency gets real high. im thinking this is maybe due to a low amount of memory. i dont want to waste my money upgrading for nothing. would it make day of defeat atleast playable?

well its not really os x performance im worried about, its day of defeat. if i recall correctly, the system recommendations for the game recommend 1gig for memory. since the intel gma 950 is integrated, its using up that memory. especially when it can use up to 200mb in games under windows. i really am thinking more ram will help, but i just dont want to waste my money and find out it didnt do anything. i used to have a gaming pc before i sold it and a ram upgrade made all the difference in the world. but since i am dealing with integrated graphics, im wondering it just cant handle it. the thing is though, i have put in so many graphics tweaks in the game, it should run. i mean it looks like the old counter-strike which i run perfectly.

  • How much will more RAM speed up my iBook?

I am looking to upgrade my RAM.
I know that speed is a multi-factor question. I need to know what's important and what pitfalls to avoid.
    I have an 12" iBook G4, 1.2GHz, 512 RAM (256 card, 256 internal). I recently installed a 120.0GB Western Digital "Scorpio" 5400RPM 9.5MM SuperSlim Notebook Drive with 8MB Data buffer.
I am choosing between a 512 or 1g RAM upgrade. My questions are:
    1) How much will this speed up my computer? 2) Is the 1g really twice as fast? 3) with my specs?
I read a post where some poor cat had upgraded RAM, but didn't feel the difference in iPhoto.
My specs read pc2100 (pc2700 compatible). Will my specific machine work faster with pc2700? Comptick (which has an awesome battery price) has a 1g RAM upgrade for $189, which is pc2100. Apple's $300 1g is pc2700.
What do I need to know about the bus rate so that I don't slow things up there?

    1) How much will this speed up my computer?
There is no way we can quantify this for you. It depends on your usage pattern (i.e. what application you use, how many applications open at a time, etc.).
    2) Is the 1g really twice as fast?
Most certainly the answer is no. If lack or RAM was causing delays in processing, adding more RAM will alleviate those delays and make your computing experience smoother and more enjoyable. But changing your RAM from 768 MB to 1.256 GB won't double the speed of your iBook.
    3) with my specs?
    ?? What is the question?
I read a post where some poor cat had upgraded RAM, but didn't feel the difference in iPhoto.
For the most part, iPhoto is disk intensive not RAM intensive. Therefore upgrading RAM will only improve certain aspects of iPhoto (such as photo editing).
Will my specific machine work faster with pc2700?
No, the PC2700 will operate at PC2100 speeds.
Current RAM prices from Mac knowledgeable vendors offering lifetime warranties can be found at RamSeeker.com and DealRam.com.
What do I need to know about the bus rate so that I don't slow things up there?
Nothing. Just buy PC2100 or PC2700 RAM and relax.

  • Will an SSD make MOTION run faster?

As it says, will it run faster?
    I'm currently on a god awful 5400rpm HDD :/
Motion 5 is slightly slow when rendering my projects, it exports fast and all's good. However when i want to play around with my projects it's so juttery.
Espcially when i click PLAY, it won't PLAY, it'll stutter A LOT.
    Thoughts?

    Heya Matt,
Motion does most of its heavy lifiting with the graphics card. An SSD will technically make Motion run faster, but upgrading the gfx card will produce the best performance increase. Have you tried optimising your playback performance in the Render settings? Draft quality, quarter resolution, etc.
    Hope that helps!

  • Will bigger ram make Lion better?

    Hi, i have a Macbook Pro, Mid 2010 13".
Currently it has 4gb of Ram and i'm just thinking for the price this website is offering, should i do it? And should i all work fine? I work with Logic alot and lately it's been running slower (i've been using about 20-30 tracks). I was just wondering whether having 8gb ram will make my Macbook work more efficiently with Lion as well.

That's where i'm looking at getting it from...
    Thanks

The Pro Applications are any Applications that are designed for professional users and usually have all the bells and whistles, but also a very steep learning curve: Logic, Final Cut, Aperture etc. You can see the full list here
There are many threads on how much RAM is need in the Aperture discussion group.
You were also asking about the quality of the RAM you selected, I hope somebody else will be able to answer that part of your question - I took my MBP to an certified Apple Store to have the RAM put in, because I did not want to loose the warranty.

  • How much difference will more memory make with Logic?

I'm running Logic 6 on an iBook G4 with 1.33 ghz and 768 meg of ram. I can max out at 1.5 gig of ram. What difference will this make? I'm also going to upgrade to Logic 7 soon. I'm going to wait a while before I get an INTEL Mac since most of my plugs have no updates available yet (Sampletank, Amplitube, and T-Racks mastering). I figure in a year, INTELS will be much more common. Please share thoughts. I run all the audio files from a 7200 Mercury Firewire drive. I figure before my iBook is outdated beyond use I can upgrade memory and eventually have a newer/faster HD installed (There's a few places that will install new HD, transfer data and have everything back to you in 24 hours).

Adding memory will only make a truly big difference if you're currently low enough that the system resorts to using virtual memory paging. Load up a typical song in Logic, then start Activity Monitor. On the System Memory display, observe the number for 'page outs'. If it rarely or never increases while you're running Logic, adding memory won't make a huge difference. If 'page outs' is constantly growing, more memory will be dramatically improve the overall behavior of the system.
Ignore 'page ins', it's not relevant.
Note: those places that do 24 hour turnaround (via express shipping) for a drive replacement charge quite a premium for the service. I'd say you're better off doing as little as possible to the current system, and saving the money for the next one. Just my opinion, of course.

  • Will more RAM help?

    Hi everyone,
I read that a good indication of whether extra RAM would be beneficial is to look at Page Ins and Page Outs on the Activity Monitor System Memory tab.
    So… here's what it says:
I've got a 17" MacBook Pro, i7 processor, Mid 2010 model currently with the standard 4GB ram.
Want to go to 8GB, will replace both modules as I have heard it's best to have two modules of the same brand.
If it's worth doing I would buy them here:
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=DFA12F1EA5CA7304
    So, my main questions:
    • Given the info above would it boost performance (I run some pretty heavy apps, iPhoto (large library), Aperture, Illustrator, Pixelmator, iTunes. iMovie, Dreamweaver and often have quite a few open!
    • Are those modules that I linked to OK? I know it sounds daft but they are sooo much cheaper than the Apple ones I'm suspicious that there may be a reason (other than Apple wanting to make a tidy profit!)
Thanks for any help in advance,
    Phil

Ok - so RAM arrived today from Crucial, fitted it in about 10 mins, no problems.
Machine did perform excellently already, or at least so I thought…
It's now running on Turbo, like someone has greased everything!
Well worth the £73.15 which included courier to Spain, 3 day delivery.
So for those interested in comparison, here's before and after (only been on for a couple of hours but still no Page outs)
    Before:
    After
Thanks for all the advice, seems to make much more sense to spend the extra on the processor with Apple and then do the memory yourself…
