Will More RAM Slow Startup Times and Will it Speed Up Gaming?
Hi,
I was thinking of upgrading my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro's 4GB of Memory to 8GB (2X4GB).
I have heard roumors that it will slow down startup times. Also, it sounds obvious, but will it help with gaming performance and reducing lag during games?

Don't let that concern you---it's not that big a pause. RAM is your friend. Thomas Reed's advice to use Activity Monitor is your best helper.
My older MBP has 2G RAM and can hold 6G, but AM has never told me I need more. Here what AM's RAM report looks like this morning:
44KB for "outs" is nothing, and the computer has not been restarted in days. (A restart clears the "in/out" numbers, so you should only run this test after using the computer for a while since the last restart.) On my MBP and for my usage patterns, 2G is completely appropriate. However, I've seen similar posts here where someone had 4G like you but the "outs were 25-30 percent of the "ins." Those people need RAM.

Okay I give up - wicked slow startup time
I've been reading every post I could find related to slow startup times, and trying every conceivable solution others have thought of and that I could think of, and I'm still plagued by a slow startup time!
Last week it was not a problem. I had just created a 10GB partition and installed Windows XP on it. Things were running smoothly. My startup times weren't like 20 seconds, but they weren't as bad as they are now (a consistent 3.5-4 minutes). Maybe it would take a minute to a minute and a half to start. Then suddenly over the weekend, it started taking 5+ minutes to boot! What could have happened?
I panicked and erased the Windows partition, backed up to Time Machine (suspecting possible disk failure in my future), and started doing every maintenance thing I know to do (fsck-which returned no errors, permissions repair, reset nv-ram and p-ram, OnyX maintenance scripts). This got it back down to where it is now, a consistent 3.5 minutes. That's still much slower than it should be.

Will More Ram stop the GB 08 painful slow down
Will More Ram stop GB 08 from running painful slow ?
I had 3GB of ram and GB on some songs GB would become painfully slow when it came to deleting notes, perhaps 30 seconds to execute the command.
The same with start and stop and many other functions like solo ect, I added two more GB of ram and it did not change this lack of processing problem.
In GB perfs I have Automatic set for all three catagories in the Advanced section
Any ideas?It's true that more ram will make garageband run better, but I'm afraid that's not true in your case. I have a 2 year old macbook that had the ram upgraded 1 to 2Gigs and GB did run faster under heavy loads but I would say your processor and OS are maybe a little outdated if you're running GB 08. Then again maybe its something else but you have more than enough ram in my opinion.

Extensions like Ghostery, WOT or AdBlock stop working after two or three times. Restarting the webpage in a new tab the extensions will work again for several times and then stop again. Has anybody an explanation or a workaround for this bug in Safari 5?
Remove the extensions, redownload Safari, reload the extensions.

I have a iMac 5.1 running osx 10.6.8 , core 2duo, and 1ghz 667mhz DDR sdram. How much ram can be added and will it run lion/mountain lion? Thanks.
As an additional thought: I had this same model iMac and although you can install 4 GB RAM, it will only address just over 3 GB. Since Lion is somewhat of a memory hog, you really will not be very happy with the performance using anything less than 4 GB - and even 4 GB is a bit of a minimum; fine for basic needs, but any photo or video editing will require more than that.

Will more ram increase my performance?
I'm running Logic Pro 7.1.1 on a Powerbook G4 1.67 with 1 GB of ram installed running a fair amount of sample libraries and effects. When I check the Activity Monitor under system memory I get the following:
Wired: 108 MB
Active: 600 MB
Inactive: 300 MB
Free: 13 MB
Since I still have a decent amount of inactive memory, does that mean that more ram would not affect my performance? Or will more ram help out with system overloads?i'm always careful in wholeheartedly saying 'yes' when people ask if more RAM will give more performance.. while of course it will in almost every case help things along, sometimes quite dramatically, I think it's important to be realistic about what it actually does.
it's easy to have the misconception that more RAM = more plug ins on some kinf of linear scale -- I had 2GB, so now with 4GB I should get something like double the performance, right? just as long as you're clear why this isn't the case, then that's the main thing.
I think since the days of CPU cards like protools TDM, the confusion is out there that adding RAM is like adding more DSP. so you just have to be careful that you understand what it's doing any why it can free your system up to do a little more. you can indeed see decent increases if your machine was struggling along before, given what you were trying to get it to do. or, it may just be a subtle thing.
IMO the best way to think of it is this. your machine has the capacity to perform up to a certain level. when you start getting it to do a lot of things, you will start creating a hindrance to it performing as fast as it can as soon as there are moments when it doesn't have enough RAM to do it. this amount will be different for everyone, dependant on your own use. so, the best thing you can do is remove the bottlenecks, and you'll best let your machine go as fast as it will go. -
I am thinking about a new imac 21.5 to replace G5 17. Not a gamer or music user but do photos and occasional home video.
Will more RAM than 4 GB for NVIDIA to share with the CPU speed up graphics to an appreciable extent?
Or should I just bite the bullet and go for the upgraded graphics card, providing I will ever notice the difference.Jim,

my daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck, home+power for 10-15 seconds. I really would like to not lose everything she has, again, because I can't back it up this time. I have tried charging via a wall outlet and PC and both charge fine, just only to 20%. I am using the cable that came with it so no aftermarket issues there. Please help so I don't have to reset everything again.
Because once it has charged enough to be powered on as soon as you turn it on it says battery is at 20% and will not charge anymore after that, it just runs for about 5-10 minutes before the battery dies again. The battery cycles discharge/recharge daily and its not on the charger at full charge for more than a couple hours and is never totally dead for more than a couple of hours.

Safari 3.1.1 Extremely slow startup times (Suddenly)
Hi I'm running a Macbook with a 2.4 GHz Processor, (Intel Core 2 Duo), 4 Gigs of ram and Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3.
this mac is about 2 months old and suddenly am having extremely slow startup times with Safari. The rest of the computer is very fast, this problem is only with safari... It used to open with about 2 or 3 bounces on the dock... now suddenly its around 15-20 bounces before it opens. It bounces this many times, and then I receive the beach ball for a few seconds. I am assuming it is probably a build up of some files, or tasks it runs through to open... It is worst when you open it for the first time after powering on the mac, after you open it, and close it it opens up a bit faster.
I have tried the basics, i.e. resetting safari and things like that.
Most of the suggestions for deleting files out of the User>Library> are for older OS's and do not apply to Leopard...
Any suggestions?Navigate to this location: Macintosh HD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:
com.apple.safari.plist
com.apple.safari.RSS.plist
Do this with Safari NOT running. See if that solves the problem. -
If i buy an unlocked iphone 4s in the usa will it work in Australia? and will the warranty be valid in astralia as i have been told that apple have a world wide after sales service but also been told warranties are only valid in the country of purchase? Cheers
Each country is a separate business. If Apple in Australia fixes a phone purchased in another country it reduces their profit. The good news is that Apple stores will frequently replace phones purchased in other countries under warranty, but they are not required to do so. Some countries are more liberal than others. India never does, for example.
Why don't you just buy it in Australia? The price difference can't be that great. -
i updated my 4s yesterday, but my phone will not work at all now, and will not turn off. It has a itunes image on the screen with an arrow underneath and what looks like the charger lead. i've had it on charge! is there anything else i can do?
Cconnect it to your computer with the latest version of iTunes installed.

Add-ons contain a range of compatible Firefox versions, and Firefox honors the listed range by disabling the add-on if you are trying to run it on an unlisted version.
I'm sure Yahoo! will update its toolbar eventually, but not every add-on maker supports beta versions of software. -
Re: New Garage Band - I have Mac OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard, and Garage Band 11. If I download/install the new GB, will I lose GB 11? And will it run on Snow Leopard?
then had to find out (same as with this issue) that I presently have other software that will not run on Maverics.
You could create a clone of your drive with all your current software, so you could continue to work with your Snowleopard software by booting from the clone, and upgrade your main system to Mavericks, if your computer supports Mavericks. This way, you could have both, if the new features of Mavericks are interesting to you - e.g-, iCloud syncing of multiple Macs, new sharing features, and for GarageBand automatic drummers and arpeggiators. -
i am using iphone 4s its under warranty , phone got automatically turn off even if has 50% battery and not get on until i connect to charger . if i go to service center will they change my phone ? and will i have to pay anything if its battery issue ???/
Take it in and see what the technicians say is wrong and then how they want to handle the iPhone. If the iPhone has a problem covered by the warranty then you should have no problems.

Apple does not unlock iPhones. however, T-Mobile, where you live does offer official unlocking. So, contact them as to the cost/requirements.
