Will My Computer Play Blu-Ray and/or HD DVD's?

According to QT web sites, the new H.264 codex allows us to play HD
DVD's. Heck, I can't even get QT 7.1.5 to play ANY DVD's! However, it does do a fantastic job of playing Anamusic.mov which is at the low end of HD - 1280 x
720 which I downloaded from QT's HD web site.
So, would I be wasting money by buying a Blu-Ray disc? I still haven't decided on what stand-alone HD Player to buy just yet.
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

QuickTime Player doesn't open DVD (MPEG-2 format).
It will also not open any HD disks.
Stick with the HD downloads if you want to view on your computer.

  • Media smart DVD stopped playing blue rays and no longer responds

I have a DV5z-1200 cto, os win7. i watch a lot of blue rays on it. i just purchased the new tron bluray and half way thru it froze. i tried to shut the machine off but it wouldnt respond. i was able to get into set up and noticed i had a new update (4.something). so i did it and now i get nothing. the drive just keeps rereading the same spot. i have uninstalled the update and when this happened Mediasmart stopped working all together. i reinstalled all the older versions but i couldn't find my original version 3.8 or something like that. i could then get a blu ray to start but now the message about you need to contact your firmware provider on the disk keeps popping up and the disks no longer play. can some one please help.

Uninstall your present Media Smart with Revo Uninstaller, use the trial.
     http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
Restart and install CCleanr and run it's registry cleaner and repeat until it finds nothing. When it finds nothing restart the machine. It will give the option to save a back up of the registry files you are about to delete, save these all as a precaution and note where they have been saved.
Personally I have never had to reinstall the files, but I like to save them anyway, and when you are satisfied that everything is fine, then you may delete them.

Here is the Media Smart DVD file.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-87326-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...
Save this to the desk top and right click to go to properties, and in the "Generals" tab it should read Size: 55,380,920 bytes and Size on disk: 55,382,016 bytes. If this is incorrect then you must disable Webroot Internet and try again.
If it is correct down load 7-Zip and right click to "extract files" open that folder and find the  "src' file. Open that and look for "Setup" the sixth one from the bottom. Click on that to install.
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html  (the one at the top of the list, type exe for 32 bit W7)
Before following this procedure for installation, make sure that you have disconnected from the internet and that your Webroot security is totally disabled. Remember to restart your machine after installing Media Smart and when it says "Press Play to Play" do not do this, it should load by it self.
This is a slightly older version, but I have tested with Tron and Harry Potter with ATI graphics and I know it works. The most recent on your support page is having a problem with some of the ATI graphics cards.
This procedure was discovered by another member on the forum, DavidPK, and so far has been the most successful. I am also hoping that disabling WebRoot will solve the problem here.

  • New P755 3dv20, will not recognize/play Blu-Rays

It recognizes and plays regular DVDs just fine, but Blu-Ray's cannot be read either in Toshiba's video player or in Windows Media Player. Kind of defeats the purpose of having purchased a 3D laptop if I can't even play my 3D movies.
The drive is a Mat**bleep**a BD-CMB UJ141EL, I can't find any manufacturer website for this company, nor can I find any driver updates for this device on Toshiba's downloads page or elsewhere. Has anyone else come across this problem?

  • HP 2311 gt monitor no longer plays blu rays.

My operating system is Windows 7 64 bit. The monitor came with softwear for playing 3D blu ray videos and movies. There is no error message it just does not play. Nothing happens at all.  It worked when I installed it and now for no reason that I can think of it will no longer play Blu ray movies 3D or otherwise. It came with power DVD 10 which worked fine when I installed it but now will only play DVDs. I searched on the forums and it seems a lot of people are having problems like mine with their power DVD softwear not playing Blu Rays any longer. ONe person posted that they got a solution from HP which cleared up the problem. I hope so because Cyber link which makes the Power DVD softwear has not been able to come up with a solution. Please help. I now have a 3D monitor that is worthless because it does not do what it is supposed to do.  I spent a lot of money on 3D blu rays so I could watch them and it is not happening. I also have a envy 3D with the same softwear and it works. But I prefer wathcin on hte larger monitor with better sound system.
Don't ask me what I did before it stopped working because I didn't do any thing!!!

    Hi,
First try this Cyberlink BD and 3D Advisor tool.   Check both BD and 3D.  Are you good to go?
Try a non-3D Blue-Ray that worked in the past.
Run the Cyberlink BD Advisor.  It's under the Start button-->Progams---> Cyberlink    You may need to update the AACS tables.
If you installed other Blu-Ray software, then you might have to uninstall that software to get Cyberlink to work again.

  • Workflow for creating one project that can be burned to both Blu-ray and standard DVD?

    Hi,
I have a 20 minute project and I'm creating a simple single menu with a play button. I'd like to create it once and be able to burn both a 1080p Blu-ray and a standard DVD. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Let me explain how transcoding works for DVD and Blueray.
Encore transcodes the files separately for DVD and Blueray and once the transcode is done and status shows transcoded the options for transcoding are greyed out, this means you have already transcoded the file and you cannot transcode again without reverting to original.
For example you have blueray selected in project settings and you click transcode now from project panel the files will be transcoded for blueray, but after transcoding if for any reason you decide to change the transcode settings and transcode the asset again with different settings you have to revert to original.
But in this case when you want to transcode the assets for DVD you don’t need to revert to original and loose the transcoding done for blueray. You can change the project settings from blueray to DVD after that you will be able to transcode for DVD without losing the transcoded files for blueray.

  • Toshiba F755-S5219 wont play blu rays

    Hi,
I have a Qosmio F755-S5219 with a built in Blu Ray player. I had been able to play blu rays including 3D blu rays.
I recently updated to the newest Nvidia driver and Toshiba Blu Ray player (1.05.130) and have been unable to play blu rays ever since.
    DVDs play fine.
I tried reinstalling blu ray player and super ic software.
I tried reinstalling original display driver, blu ray player software and Super IC
I reinstalled current version of BIOS
I tried reupdating to Ver 1.05.130 and current nVidia Display driver.
I just tried updating to 1.05.207
DVDs always work, but blu rays auto open the toshiba player then go to a blank screen with 00:00:00 and stop
Blu Rays play fine in ArcSoft total Theater 6. So it is clearly and issue with The Toshiba software.
I contacted toshiba tech support, and the first level told me to do the same things I've done and Level 3 said they would charge me for any more help.
    Any Ideas would be appriciated.
(and yes I've tried FIX IT)

    Hi
The WinDVD BD was preinstalled on notebooks which are equipped with an BD drive.
The notebook seems to be an Toshiba Australian series and I found all the drivers and tools here:
    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/computers/qosmio/f60/pqf65a-00y002/download
There you can see that an WinDVD 8 Blu-ray Player Update is available for download but for models with Blu-ray.
If you are still using the original Toshiba Windows system, then you could try to set the notebook back to factory settings using the HDD recovery option or Recovery disk (you have to create such disk) and then can check if WinDVD BD would appear as preinstalled software.

  • I used the digital download from my purchased Blu-Rays and they will not sync with either my iPad or iPhone 4, saying they did not transfer because I am not authorized on this computer. I tried de-authorizing and re-authorized my MacBook Pro already

I used the digital download from my purchased Blu-Rays and they will not sync with either my iPad or iPhone 4, saying they did not transfer because I am not authorized on this computer. I tried de-authorizing and re-authorized my MacBook Pro alreadydigial

I just got a Touch 32GB yesterday and ran into the same problem. I have two PCs in the house that I can sync my iPods on, but I normally use one that DOESN'T have an internet connection, so that the one that does is free for others to use ... a great argument and tension solution, btw.
Anyway, I hooked up the older "iTunes" PC to the net for a first-time sync with the Touch, and ran into this problem. First it kept detecting the Touch as an unidentified iPhone, then I couldn't sync my classic either. Then I found a post here about how when multiple USB ports running off same USB controller seem to screw with the Touch/iPhone syncing.
So I disconnected all but 2 of my USB 2.0 slots (the Touch & the Portable HD with my iTunes Library) and now it's working perfectly. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but it might be worth a try.

  • Blu-ray optical drive no longer plays Blu-ray discs. Will play all other discs

I have a HP Pavilion Elite hpe-510y desktop pc. HP product # bv538aa#aba.  Optical drive has stopped playing and recognizing Blu-ray discs. All other discs play fine. I didn't notice this problem for awhile because I don't always play Blu-ray discs on my PC. I don't know if their was an update or if the optical drive has just gone bad. I am not sure if its a hardware or software problem. Has anyone else had this problem with this model. Would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter. Thank You. Dennis

    Dennis, welcome to the forum.
I suggest uninstalling the drive.  You can do this by going into Control Panel / Device Manager / DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right click on your drive and select "Uninstall".  Then, reboot the computer.  Windows will indentify it and reinstall it.

  • HP desktop computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs. Who is responsible for this?

In 2010, I blought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. All these years, I've been successfully playing regular DVDs and CDs. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
I recently rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD (as well as the "Divergent" regular DVD) from my local library. When I tried to play the Blu-ray DVD, the HP MediaSmart software and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html    This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work. When I got rid of the Codec Pack using System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player became unable to detect the Blu-ray in the Blu-ray drive. After another System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player were once again able to detect the Blu-ray (but were still unable to play the Blu-ray).
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing. I then got rid of Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 with a System Restore.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not detect the Blu-ray. I then got rid of TotalMedia Theatre with a System Restore. After that, I was not able to play ANYTHING, including CDs and regular DVDs. CDs and regular DVDs were not being detected by playing software. After another System Restore, I was once again able to play CDs and regular DVDs. However, I do not want to risk trying to play the Blu-ray again.
So, what's going on here? HP advertised this computer as having a Blu-ray DVD player. Wasn't HP responsible for providing software that could play Blu-ray DVDs? And why is the Blu-ray DVD, sometimes detected, and sometimes not detected, by playing software? Is there some kind of hardware issue?
Who is responsible for the fact that my computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs? HP, for bad playing software and/or bad hardware? Or is there something in the Windows 7 operating system that prevents the playing of Blu-ray DVDs? Is Microsoft responsible?
    Thanks for any information.

You're not going to get any help from HP or Microsoft on a 4 year old computer.   Maybe your optical drive is no longer able to play Bluray discs.  Windows 7 Media Center with Bluray playback was not included in all versions of Windows 7.  Each computer with Bluray has an individual license; yours may have expired after not using it for 4 years.  Best advice - don't flog a dead horse.  Just get regular DVDs.

Will the USB SuperDrive play blu ray discs?  Is there another way to play them on my iMac?

The product informationhttp://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f does not say anything about Blue Ray, a proprietary Sony format.  You can buy a Blue Ray compatible drive from sources like Amazon, Best Buy or computer stores.

  • Best Way to Play Blu-ray disc/Blu-ray ISO on Windows 8

Nowadays, almost any computer can play DVD movies as long as there is a DVD drive provided, whatever it's a PC or Mac, homemade DVD or commercial DVD. But what about Blu-ray movies? Could your Windows 8 PC play this high definition movie formats without fuss? How to play Blu-ray on PC with Windows 8 system? This article will tell you the best way for playing/watch Blu-ray discs or Blu-ray ISO Files on Windows 8.
In order to watch Blu-ray discs or BD ISO on Windows 8, you must have three things: 1) a Blu-ray disc drive, 2) a Blu-ray movie, and 3) Blu-ray Player Software(Need decrypting Blu-ray function). It is this third one – software – that causes the majority of problems for Blu-ray users. The free player like Windows Media Player, VLC Player, etc don't have Blu-ray decrypting function and not support playing Blu-ray movies. So this Blu-ray Player for Windows 8 from UFUSoft will be the best solution for you.
Follow the following steps to Play Blu-ray discs or Blu-ray ISO movie and media file on Windows 8:
Step 1: Connect the Blu-ray driver to your Windows 8 PC via a USB connection. The USB of the driver should be above 2.0.
Step 2: Free Download the Windows 8 Blu-ray Disc/Blu-ray ISO Player and then install it.
Step 3: Insert your Blu-ray disc into the Blu-ray driver. Next, open your Blu-ray movie by just pressing the “Open Disc” in the main interface to select Blu-ray drive and then click "OK" button to load the Blu-ray directly. You can now enjoy your Blu-ray movies on Windows 8 PC.
Another option is to load Blu-ray folder, you can click "Open File" button to directly select the Blu-ray folder and click "OK" button, now you can watch the Blu-ray movie on Windows 8 PC.
Step 4: Stop the playing the Blu-ray movie on Windows 8. If you want to stop playing the Blu-ray disc, you only need click Stop Button and eject the Blu-ray movie.
    Tips:
    1. When you want to play the Blu-ray ISO image file, you need to load Blu-ray ISO image file to the virtual drive firstly, the open method is the same with loading Blu-ray disc.
    2. While the video is playing, click the "Snapshot" button to take a picture from a video. Click Open Snapshot Folder to find the captured picture. You can choose the snapshot format and the snapshot folder in the Preference window. And also you can choose the image format like JPEG, PNG, BMP.
    3. When playing Blu-ray disc, you are allowed to choose the specific title/chapter in the "Controls > Title/Chapter" column to play.
Hope this way could help you have no problem to enjoy Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray ISO files on Windows 8, more info please enter: Play Blu-ray disc/Blu-ray ISO on Windows 8 PC.

  • The best way to play blu ray discs/movies UP TO DATE

I am a huge TLOTR fan (lol) and up until recently I thought the quality of the movie i have(in digital form) was decent or even great, I recently bought a 15" inch macbook pro(2.2ghz)-- my first apple computer--- and when I played the same exact movie, the quality just looked terrible, in fact every digital movie I own doesn't look as stunning or high quality I thought it was. I'm slowly upgrading my movie library to a better quality one and the first thing I have to have is "the lord of the rings" trilogy(extended version) , so I guess the closest i can get to high picture quality is by buying those blu ray discs, one problem: how do I play blu ray on my macbook pro and will I experience a better quality than those normal DVDs.
According to your experience with blu ray, which is the best way to play blu ray discs on a macbook? ( please provide steps or pointers since I'm new at this)
Also, any alternative suggestions to be able to watch the movie in high quality is welcome, i just thought blu ray was the closest thing to perfect quality. Keep in mind i can't buy from itunes since I don't own a credit card.
TL;DR : I need to play blu ray disc movies on my 15"macbook pro 2011, what's the best way to go about this to get as close to full quality as possible. Also, would it make any difference if I bought blu ray disks versus the conventional DVDs (regarding movie quality)? Since the screen resolution of the 15" pro is not enough to experience "full HD quality"?

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC won't play blu-ray anymore

HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC used to play blu-ray discs. it had been a while since i have tried to play one and my computer has, no doubt, updated countless times since.
when i load a blu-ray disc the HP DVD player starts, and there is a black screen which says 'loading' and to press play. pressing play does not start the disc. it used to ask me if i wanted to check for updates, but selecting 'yes' never seemed to find any, and selecting 'no' just brought you back to the same place.
i have tried downloading the sp50935 DVD update to fix the problem, but when installing i get a message that says the 'install has been stopped due to an unsupported operating system' (to that effect), but i use Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1, the same that came installed when purchased.
