  • Mac Mini upgrade to 8gb RAM?

    Can Mac Mini (2009 model) 2.0GHz/1GB 1066MHz DDR3 upgrade ram to 8gb (2x4GB)?

Not sure how you can say something is not possible purely based on the fact that OWC doesn't sell a kit. You have to admit that is pretty ridiculous. If you had some technical knowledge backing your statements they would hold more merit. I think the guy doesn't believe you because you don't have any real information and you are not offering any expertise.
Does anyone with real knowledge of such things know if the Mini can be expanded beyond 4GB?
Someone above commented that OWC has tried unsuccessfully to upgrade the Mini. Is there a link to this info?

  • HT5475 Can the Mac mini upgrade to 8GB and 8GB of 1866MHz RAM ?

I have the Mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz Core i7 model.

The 2102 Mini can go to 16 GB, two 8 GB sticks. Macs are picky about memory and a stick rated at a higher speed may not work. Make sure that they say they will work with a Mac

  • Can a New Mac mini server take 8GB of RAM?

We are considering buying a Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server (to use the complete term) for our small business. Every review I read points out two of the biggest shortcomings as:
    1. A limit of 4 GB of memory
    2. Limited to the two slow 500 GB drives
However, there seems to be a lot of chatter about a firmware update for both the mini and the mini server that enables 8 GB of RAM. I want an Apple-supported configuration. Does Apple actually support 8GB RAM on the mini server?
I assume that the drives are also not upgradable due to power/heat, and that it would be better to just get an external Firewire drive array.
    Thanks in advance!

    Is this Apple-approved/supported?
AFAIK, It is not. 4GB max from Apple. But Macsales' reputation in the Mac community is among the best so I am inclined to believe them and I personally would be comfortable with 8GB from Macsales even if it's not supported by Apple. However, you will have to weigh that against the potential issues you may have if you ever need to get the Mini repaired under warranty.

When I go to Kingston's USA site and select the 2102 Mac Min it returns these as being compatible

I have the Mac Mini from Mid 2011 but I bought it in 7/13/2012, I had gotten a New HD Last Year.  My Mac Mini is Intel Core i7 with a Thunder Bolt Bus, A  2.7 GhZ Memory 8 GB 1333 MHZ DDR 3. HD 6630M 256 MB.
Is there anything else that you might need from me to know if my Computer will be Compatible to upgrade to Yosemite?
How much Ram or Space does Yosemite need to be good for an upgrade?
I tried to look or read in the softwear upgrade on how much you need in Ram or Memory space to upgrade to Yosemite or what computers are Compatible to Yosemite? but it Doesn't say? so I would like to know if my Computer will be Compatible for Yosemite?
    Thank You,

I understand, that After upgrading to Yosemite I can update to iPhoto 9.6, but what about Garage Band, iMovie, and iWeb?
Will I be able to update to the other 3 software program for free or do I have to Pay the full price for each Software individually?
Note: I have iLife '11, do I need that whole Software program for the updates? or to get the Free Update for each software program?
After Upgrading to Yosemite will the iMovie, Garage Band, and iWeb show up in the update part of the app store?

  • Mac mini doesn't wake after ram upgrade

    Hi
I recently upgraded my mac mini from 2gb ram to 8gb ram and noticed that when the mac goes to sleep and the tv ( through hdmi wire) goes into standby that the mac mini will not send a signal to the tv anymore to wake up the tv from standby when I need it too from tapping on keyboard or moving mouse. At first I thought it was because of a software upgrade on the mac mini but when I switched back the ram to 2gb the mac mini will send the signal to wake the tv . I am just wondering has anyone come across this problem and what the solution is . I hav already reset pram setting and the usual things that everyone has mentioned in other posts . This seems to be a major flaw in apple deisgn unless they have a fix . I am stuck with my 2gb ram now in the mac which doesnt even have any speed . the only way I can use the 8gb ram is if i turn the mac on and off everytime I want to use it , as this is the only way to wake the tv with the 8gb ram inside as it doesnt wake the tv from sleep. This totally contradicts what apple say in their manual aswell,  they say not to power down your mac if your using it everyday just put it to sleep which wont help me in my case . So at the end of this rant my only two options are to continue to use 8gb ram and have to power on and off mac everytime to wake the tv or use my 2gb ram which makes the mac run really slow as 2gb is not enough but hey aleast my tv will come back on from sleep mode .
Any answer will be a great help ???

Hi, no idea if this could affect it, but after the RAM install did you try thiese?

  • HT1338 Mac Mini upgrades? 10.5.8 to 10.7?

I am currently running 10.5.8 on my mac mini. I want to upgrade to 10.7, but it looks like I've got to get 10.6.8 first. Is this even do-able on my machine?

As Allan suggested, you need full details to give an appropriate answer.
Those you give now seem okay to move to 10.6.8. at least.
Before buying anything you should first make sure your machine will accept the upgrade you have in mind.

  • Will my mac mini run Snow Leopard smoothly?

    Hi
I'm looking to upgrade the operating system on a mac mini. It's running Tiger 10.4.11 and i want to upgrade it to something  newer and more secure. Snow Leopard is the highest it can go, but it doesn't meet the requirements for some of the key features, such as the 64bit processing nor the OpenCL. So i'm unsure if snow leopard will run smooth on my mac. Any info at all would be nice.
it's an early 2006 mac mini
Processor - 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo
    Memory - 1GB  667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics - Intel GMA 950 - VRAM: 64MB of shared system memory
it has plenty hard drive space
    Thanks for reading

Thanks Kappy. If i could get your help a second time, i read this requirement from the Leopard Technical Specifications page,
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
my processor shows a Bus Speed of 667MHz which seems slower than 867MHz, am i wrong? or will my processor work?

  • Mac Mini Upgrade to Server

As I have ordered myself one of the new 27" icore7 - 8gig 1TB systems (eagerly awaiting delivery), I have decided to convert my mac mini into a server, OSX servier is now quite reasonable for unlimited client licence. So I have purchased
4 gig to go into my mac mini Identifier:Macmini3,1 2ghz (8 gig just too expensive yet) and want to also upgrade the HD to a larger and faster unit.
I have been looking at the Seagate OEM 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 Internal Hard Disk Drive (7200RPM, 32MB Cache).
Question will the Mini support this size and speed. ?

    mmm 2.5"
I would rather not use the firewire 800 port for the OS drive.
how about a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 Laptop 2.5 inch Hard Disk Drive 500GB SATA 7200rpm 16MB (Internal)
I feel that the HD is slow in the mini and needs to be speed-ed up.
I suppose there is a possibility of bringing the sata cable out through the back and attaching a 3.5" drive in an external case... food for thought.

  • Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.

Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
    2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
    3. Holding shift, no luck.
    4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.

  • Mac Mini Upgrade to Leopard

I have a mac mini on tiger at the moment, and have the leopard install discs from a macbook pro, one of which is the macbook pro driver CD (which I obviously would not use)
My question is do I need a driver disk for the mac mini, or can I just install leopard on it with the CD and it will be ok? Can't seem to find this anywhere on the internet, and I would've naturally thought I would require a driver CD, but others have said you don't need one to upgrade to leopard...
    Thanks in advance

Sure, I understand that I can't use the leopard one I have - Thanks
But what I mean, is that there is a driver CD also given with the leopard disk for the macbook pro, so you can install the drivers afterwards - my question is, how does this work with the Mac Mini if I used the retail version of OS X 10.5, - do I need a drivers CD like you get with a mac computer when you buy it to install Leopard to the mac mini, or can you purely JUST install leopard retail and it will work?

  • Mac Mini Upgrade Options

    Greetings All,
I've been thinking about upgrading my Mac Mini, and am curious to know what options exist for somebody wanting to improve their RAM, and/or chipset/motherboard, and/or video card.
At present, my system is using the original 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo, with 1GB of 667MHz DD2 SDRAM. I'd be looking to maximize my system now, so that I'm able to more than adequately run future applications, (such as Leopard or Spore).
So if anybody has any ideas, by all means, let me hear them.

There's very little you can officially do to your mini to upgrade it, but a fair bit you can do if you're prepared to get stuck in with putty knives, screwdriver and a bit of time. It is possible, in addition to maxing out the RAM to 2Gb in that model, to upgrade the CPU, swap out the original hard drive for a larger/faster one and replace the optical drive with a DVD burner if it doesn't already have one. However, you can't do anything about the video card since that's integrated into the logic board, and while you could theoretically replace the logic board with one from a newer model, it would still have the same GMA950 graphic chipset.
Your system, even as it is currently, will run Leopard very nicely, though maxing the RAM would be wise. Otherwise, if you have needs that the current system doesn't meet, it may be better to put your plans for upgrading the current mini on hold, and instead look at replacing the system. A logic board, for example, would have a cost that is not far behind that of a complete new mini!
