Will my old applications work on Lion?

I am hesitant about installing Lion because I have a lot of content and familiarity with my current set up 10.6.8  I also found iTunes 10 not as preferable as 9!
I'm especially concerned about messing up Logic Pro.  Should I do the upgrade or will I regret it should I have to say goodbye to iWork '08 or other old apps I have????

Lion will run Intel & Universal apps, as Carolyn mentioned PPC apps will not run. It's a fairly simple exercise to see if  your apps are Intel, Universal or PPC. Here is what to do:
Open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) or open Spotlight and type System Profiler
On the left pane select Applications
Look in the Kind column and System Profiler advises what each app is.
From there it's a simple matter of making a list of the PPC based apps,  you will know they either need to be upgraded or replaced if you want Lion. You also may find you have PPC apps you haven't used in years, this is the opportunity to get rid of them.

Will Microsoft Office 2011 work on my Mac?  (OS X Lion)

well considering it's worked on Lion for over a year, I'd say yes.

  • Will any old monitor work?

I'm seriously considering picking up my first Mac. I was really interested in the iMac, but I feel that it's just too expensive for me at this time. So, now I'm looking at the Mac Mini. Again, price appears to be an issue.
After looking at Apple's store, it has come to my attention that the cheapest monitor they sell is $800. In that case, I'd be better off buying the iMac.
I'm sure there are cheaper flat screen alternatives (I'm heading to college, so space is a big issue). However, while I'm looking is there anything specific I need to know?
Will all monitors that work for PCs work on Macs? Do I need a special kind of port to make it work?

most all computer monitors will work with the mini, but i'm sure there are a few exceptions.
use the DVI to VGA adapter if a non-DVI monitor.
for the really old monitors that have BNC or 13W3 connectors, there are options for those too.
i looked on newegg.com for you and found a widescreen 21" Samsung for $499.99 that has VGA + DVI, plus it also composite, S-Video, and component inputs (for VCR, XBOX, PS2, cable/satellite boxes, camcorder, etc... to really save space and double as a TV)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001078
...or if you know that you only want to hook up a computer, there is a viewsonic 19" that has VGA and DVI only for $216.99.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116373
you can see that i suggested widescreen models, as I think this is THE form factor for all future UI and media and monitors that had DVI, since it is a "feature" that is almost standard now and worth it performance wise.

  • Mac book pro -intel duo  - will my old software work with it?

Not sure if I should get the 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo Mac book pro as I have heard old software will not work on it and I really do not want to have to buy new software, just to add on to the cost.
    Can anyone help.
The software I have that I want to work with it is:
    Micro Soft Office Version 10.0.0
    Photoshop Version 7.0
Final cut Pro HD Version 4.5
I am have OS X TIGER 10.4.6 although the operating system that will come with the new Mac book Pro will be leopard - I guess.
Can any one help with my dilemma?
    THANKS

Microsoft Office v.X will work fine, Adobe Photoshop 7 should be able to do its thing as well although you might have problems installing it (some of the Adobe installers don't work right). However, it's not recommended that you use less than FCP 5.1.
Sure having to upgrade software is a pain and can substantially add to the cost of transitioning to Intel system but as time most applications will need to be upgraded anyway. It just pushes the costs forward a bit. Just remember you pay upgrade costs and not new package costs.

  • If I move iphoto library to separate hard disk will my old slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I won't talk about iMoive - best to ask on that forum - but yes, everything will be exactly the same after you move the Library because you'll tell iPhoto to look for that library. That's what step 3, below, is all about.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD

  • Can I get a plug-in to make old software work with Lion?

Uploaded and install Lion 10.7.2 onto my MacBook (2.4ghz, 2GB).  Got it running, then discovered numerous, mostly photography-related software, no longer works.  Pretty peeved.  This includes:
Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, VersionCue and Illustrator
EOS Viewer Utility and Digital Photo Professional (for my Canon camera)
    Acrobat 6.0 Professional
    AppleWorks
    Corel Painter
    Microsoft Office
    Real Player
I cannot afford to just buy new licenses so will have to switch back to Snow Leopard unless they fix this.  Will I get my $30 back?  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I've discovered that all of these applications (programs) are PowerPC and are not supported within OS X Lion.  Is there a Rosetta plug-in that one can get?  Any news about Apple updated Lion to include one? Any other things I can try?
There is now and will never be any way for PowerPC apps to run on Lion.
You'll need to go back to Snow Leopard.
Call Apple and ask for a refund on your Lion Purchase

  • I am planning on getting a new IMAC will my old software work on the new mac

I am planning on buying a IMAC so will I have to replace all my software that is on my G4 running 10.5.8 ?

Not ALL of your software, but likely some of it. Right click on an application and click "Get Info." Next to "Kind:" if it says Power PC, it will not work on a new iMac.

  • Will MS Office 2008 work with Lion?

I purchased Lion but cancelled the download when I read that people were having trouble running MS office programs on the operating system. Does anyone know how well MS office 2008 applications run, if at all, on Lion? Thanks!

I have two friends who say for sure 2011 works.
2008 apparently is being told not supported.
did you do a clean install or just an upgrade on the os?
when using 3rd party apps it is important to back up all your work, and do a clean install of the os, wiping everything, then reinstalling the apps.
there is a trick to doing a clean install. You can find the instructions in this thread.  WHY apple has made it literally IMPOSSIBLE for average mac users to easily choose the option of a clean install with Lion is a mystery to me.  With Lion Apple remotely has control of your operating system. They can change and update anything on it that they see fit without your knowing they even did.

  • Newbie asks: Will an AIR Application work with CFCs on Standalone PC if ColdFusion is not installed?

I am a ColdFusion developer who is absolutely new to Flex.
I would like to create a Flex/AIR application that will run on standalone PCs that are not connected to the Internet. As such, I need to develop a truly standalone application with the entire front and back end installed on the PC.
I will need to create the services that the SWF files will use to fetch and write data to the database. I would prefer to use my CF skills to write those services in ColdFusion. When I deploy the application as a standalone Windows application, would CF have to be installed on the target PCs, or is the AIR runtime able to use the services (the CFC files) that were created with ColdFusion?
If the answer is that CF would have to be installed, I would have to create the services in something other than CF. If that's the case, what would you suggest that I use to create the services? I would be looking for something with the smallest possible footprint that will work on truly standalone PCs.

  • Will Final Cut Studio Work with Lion?

I am considering upgrading my OS to Lion will I be able to use FCP Studio ?

    FCS 3 works.
FCS 2 will work if you install Rosetta from a mac OS X 10.6 disc first - the Installers are Power PC based.
FCS 1.5 (with FCP5.1) Maybe. It will also need Rosetta.
    Anything earlier will not work.

I would assume, because they're metion:
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.8 GHz) (Game will not run on a PowerPC Macintosh)
So it's a Intel game and running with Lion, if you're computer meet the hardware requirements.

I assume you mean you use Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, (not Windows 2008.)  If so, then yes, Office 2008 or later will work with OSX Lion.

What version of word do you have? The TS3938 sounds like it's a PowerPC app- written for an old architecture that is no longer supported in Lion. If this is the case, your files are fine- you just need a newer version of word that will run in Lion in order to open them. The newest version (2011) should be readily available anywhere, and has worked fine for me ever since I switched to Lion on release day....
