Will my photos be lost/damaged?

I've updated my 2010 iMac with OS X 10.9 (from 10.6.8) and I can't access my photos without updating iPhoto. The text reads: "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. If I upgrade, will my photos be lost or damaged immidiatly, or does this warning mean that if I were to downgrade my operating system to something lower than OS X 10.9 I would be unable to access them?" Thank you for your help/clarification.

It means exactly what it says. Older version of iPhoto will not be able to open the library. This is true of most iPhoto upgrades. No you will lose nothing unless something goes wrong which is why you. Ever do any upgrade with out first having a good backup

  • Iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?

Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. Some may be on the cloud but how can I save them? I haven't backed anything up and can't open iphoto to try. I/ve copied it onto my desktop but can't open that either!
Please help a t otal idiot!

Before you do anything else make a backup of your iPhoto library. Disk drives do fail regularly, and one day all your photos will be gone for sure, if you do not keep copies on a different drive.
You can simply drag theiPhoto library from your Pictures folder to a different disk to create a backup copy.
iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?
You misunderstood the warning.  When you use a new version of iPhoto with yiur iPhoto library, the older iPhoto version will no longer bea ble to read the library, but naturally, the new version you are using now, will be able to show your photos.
So proceed  with the update - that is a routine warning, and is necessary, to be able to use your iPhoto library with the new version of iPhoto.

If your phone (plus syncing) is the only place you keep your pictures you are asking for trouble, theft or not. Back up onto an external hard disk which is only mounted when you need it, then nothing external can erase them. Then make use of Apple's facilities for protecting your phone:

  • Moving LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?

I moved LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?
The meta data for each image is missing.
I have over 2,000 images. I don't want to go back through each image and add meta data.
Is there some way to move everything?

No, do not re-import your images. I assume you can see the thumbnails in the library module, just cannot access the full images, right? If this is the case there should be an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every one of your pictures and you only have to tell LR where the images are now.
Click the exclamation mark of one of the images and a dialog window should pop-up, telling you that LR cannot find the file, but with an option to locate it. Press "Locate" and navigate to the folder on your new HD where the file is. If in the new external HD you kept the same folder structure that you had on the internal disk, LR will be able to find all your images and re-link them to the database without further intervention.

  • I downloaded the new iphoto to my macbook pro. Now when I open it, there is a message telling me that "your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." What do I do I had 16,000 pictures.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Deleting FB Account.  If I unsync iPhoto with FB will my photos be deleted from iPhoto?

Hi, I'm new on here and so glad I've found such a brilliantly helpful site.
My question is as above.  Basically I have photos on FB that I dont have on my Imac, my FB account is synced with Iphoto and so they show up in entire albums under the 'Shared' section of my Iphoto.  BUT!  If I delete all the pictures from my FB account ( I want to close my FB Account) will they then disappear from Iphoto?  If so, then what if I unclick the FB sync in Iphoto first, will the photos from FB STAY in iphoto and allow me to proceed to deleting my FB account.  I have found a lot people wanting info on doing things the other way around but not for this way.  Please dont tell me I'll have to download all pic individually from FB to Imac and then import to Iphoto as it will take forever as I cannot find a way of downloading an entire album from FB.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Lou x

Oh!!  I just started to remove FB from the iphoto preferences and it does say that if i do that the photos that are on FB WILL be removed from IPHOTO and I need to import all my FB from FB to IMAC and then IMPORT TOO Iphoto!!!!!  Then there is a box to check BEFORE I click the (REMOVE) button ( to remove FB from preferences) and the box says (Import photos to iphoto before removing this account)  BUT for some reason i have a horrible feeling they will all be lost?

  • Photo library is damaged or unreadable

Hi I can not open photo's and have this message. Your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup. How do I fix?

You may be able to repair your iPhoto library by doing the following -
Make a copy of the iPhoto library first. It is located (usually) in your Pictures folder.
Launch iPhoto while holding down the option key on your keyboard.
In the resulting dialog you will see several choices to repair the library. Take them from the top down, testing after each repair to see if iPhoto will launch normally.
If this does not work, you will need to use whatever backups you have of your iPhoto library. You do have a backup I hope?
    Best of luck.

THIS IS THE MESSAGE i just got!! i was importing photos off my digital camera.

    And i got this message..
as far as "back up" uhhhh never did that on my I photos pictures. what can i do!?!

    Using iPhoto 08?
Easiest solution: restore from your back up. When you say "uhhhh never did that on my I photos pictures" then you're telling us that you don't really care about them. Only a fool has any important data on a computer without a back up.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Can i uninstall iPhoto 9.4 and reinstall iphoto 9.3 from time machine and will my photos still be there?

can i uninstall iPhoto 9.4 and reinstall iphoto 9.3 from time machine and will my photos still be there?
    Janet

Did you try to repair your library after the update to 9.4?  Here's what you can try:  make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the above does'nt work and you want to go back to iPhoto 9.3 read this tutorial from  iPhoto Library Manager's website:  Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?

Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?  I know that when a computer is wiped cleaned that the info is still on the hard drive, how do I access it?  Can I pay someone to access it?  Long story short, everything was saved to my external hard drive except my photos, by mistake of course.

You have to stop using the drive immediately.  Completely stop.  Do not boot the computer from the drive.
File recovery software: Try using an application such as Data Rescue 3 - http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php or FileSalvage - http://subrosasoft.com, or one of the ones listed in the (old) link below. Some have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files.
    http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash or otherwise delete them from a computer (unless you use secure erase, in which case they are gone forever or can only be potentially be recovered by very expensive means) and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
Even if the above works, do not expect the results to be pretty or even 100% successful.  Files will often lose their names and you will have to re-name them one by one.

  • I had a/b 7000 photos sync'd to my iPhone 3GS (16GB) from my PC...Today, all my photos are lost

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a head's up on what to do when you iP cannot successfully sync photos... the following is my dilemma:
I had a/b 7000 photos sync'd to my iPhone 3GS (16GB, w/ 4+GB available) from my PC...Today, all my photos are lost & every time I re-sync, iTunes gets to the end of the optimization & then stops working! This incomplete sync happens if sync is for 1-photo or all!!!

Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, deselect Sync Photos followed by a sync.
This will remove all photos from your iPhone that were transferred from your computer.
Follow this by reselecting Sync Photos under the Photos tab making your selection below regarding the photos you want transferred to your iPhone followed by a sync.
If no change after this, try deleting the iPod Photo Cache from your computer.

  • HT201269 Will my photos transfer from iphone 4 to 4s if I restore the 4s from iPhone 4 back up on iTunes?

Will my photos that I took with iPhone 4 transfer from iphone 4 to 4s if I restore the 4s from iPhone 4 back up on iTunes?

Do a backup of your 4, either to the cloud or your computer, depending on how you usually do this.
If you backed up your 4 to the computer, connect the new phone to the computer at this point, if you restored it to the cloud, do NOT connect it to the computer (or you might get an old backup by mistake). Just connect it to a charger.
When you first power up your new phone, it will ask you whether you want do configure it as a new phone or to restore it from a backup.  Select "from a backup".  The prodedure is slightly different for computer and iCloud backups, but you'll be able to figure it out.
This will restore all your apps, settings, and camera roll.  Then you can either sync it to the computer or redownload your music and movies (depending on how you manage these things).
Once this is done, you can delete everything you don't want from the old phone.
