Will my PowerBook G4 12-Inch not boot if fan is not operational?

I'm just wondering, is there a boot disabler if fan is not operational?
I've been having fan problems lately. The fan blade was scraping up against the metal, making it sound like 1000 angry hornets were attempting to escape my laptop. But, last class, my PB just wouldn't start. I attempted a verbose boot in openfirmware but that did nothing. I thought it was a shot hard drive, and that isn't out of the question (hard drives don't last forever) But just a few minutes ago, right after the startup sound, I listened closely to my PB. I heard the fan turn on and off a few times then the grey screen came on and there was no fan noise anymore. The booting cannot pass the grey screen. No Apple logo, just a blank, grey screen. I can boot into OpenFirmware and I can also boot into the Startup Manager.
Any help with this is muchly appreciated,

Bus powered external hard drives and the Powerbook G4 17 inch

Does anyone have a suggestion for a bus powered external hard drive that will work with the Powerbook 17 inch? I had purchased a Simpletech Simpledrive portable USB 100GB bus powered drive and it will not work with my 17 inch. It works with my 15 inch titanium and a G5 but not the 17 inch. Simpletech told me that it isn't getting enough power from the USB ports (I even tried using the adapter to plug it into both ports at the same time).
I am going to return the drive and probably buy a Firewire one instead since you can boot from Firewire but I am wondering if I will have the same problem with Firewire on the 17 inch and HAVE to use an AC adapter.

This also happens on the PB 15". It is perceived as a problem. If you check via the System Profiler you will likely see that the USB port output is 500mA. Most drives - in a USB or FW case - need 1A to boot. There are some drives that will boot with 500mA. If a 500mA drive is installed in the USB case it should boot off the bus power. If using a ext HD you can only boot the computer from the FW port and not the USB or PCMCIA slot.
The FW port will power the ext HD. I do not recommend daisy chaining unless you use a powered FW hub. I blew 4 FW ports and had to replace the logic board 4 times but Apple Care paid for all the work. The newer FW ports are more robust but it is still a chance if you try to draw too much power.

Powerbook G4 looses settings for booting for firewire?Need Help

I have a powerbook g4 17 inch al..
1.67 pro
2 gigs ram
and I formatted a seagate firewire 800 drive to be my hdd replacment <<it died
well its installed fine ( partations is for powerbook boot)
however when i shut down it doesn't find the drive..
I tried ... setting the startup disk in preferences
disk repair... permissions repair...
if i press the option it doesn't find the drive... however it might have once found it before i migrated all my settings from time machine to it...
the only way it works for me right now is to use the cd and then disk utilities..then choose startup disk... then it stARTS...
any help would be great...

you get what you pay for... well this forum is proof that macs as far as hardware is concerned is no different then a pc of the same caliber ...both break down

when will a computer company ofer the same lifetime warrenty i can get from sears for my tools....
yea i need to renew it every few years but at least they stand behind there product as long as I choose...
I would still have my mac under warranty... but it wasn't an option... what does that say about the product or the company selling it to you....( keep in mind Sears offers a warranty for all tools and I could keep the warranty going forever)

PowerBook G4 17-inch, supposedly on its last battery legs

My PowerBook G4 17-inch has developed a really, really weird problem.
It goes like this. Read my previous "Dead PowerBook G4 battery" post to see how the first battery died. Basically: I take this thing into a cafe, hook it up to Wifi, read email from Mail.app, and boom, the thing dies on the spot. Three-fingered salutes or random presses on the power button all fail to bring it back to life. I speed home and stick it on power -- the thing comes back to life. Disconnect power, though, and the laptop dies INSTANTLY. It took my 2nd battery (the one I got in the US, I got the PB in China).
So I stick my 1st battery in (the one that came with the PB), and it works. Until about six days later on. I was a tea house, editing some Chinese document in TextEdit for about 30 minutes. The thing dies instantly -- very same symptom. I called one of my friends at Apple China and the answer was a suspected power problem. "Send your machine in for repairs" was what I received as a suggestion. I plugged it back into power (again, it worked great -- disconnect power, though, and the thing dies again -- instantly), backed up ALL DATA (took ages!), and sent the machine in.
Apple China's Beijing authorized service centre (ServiceOne) took the machine in and tested it for two full weeks. They said they've charged up the battery, let the thing run on battery and done that plenty of times. They've also did the "standard test" and found no problems. They called me up about 2 - 3 weeks later and said, take your laptop back, there are no problems. I tested the machine and true to their words -- it hummed along on the battery.
I am not going to take second chances, though -- I have something like 40-or-so projects on my two other Macs (my iBook G4 and my iMac Core Duo) and I will not have a binary digit of data loss! (This machine has stayed put ever since I brought it back home.) So I kind of refuse to use my 17-incher until I know where the problem is and how I nix it. I asked them what caused it -- I mentioned the bit where the power adapter is always at home, plugged in (the 17-incher has run up about a million miles on the road), and where I would plug it in with the adapter already plugged in. They said you should plug it in the other way round. OOPS...
I Googled for "power manager" and am suspecting a flaky PMU/power manager. Additionally, I'm going to reformat the whole HD (as all data, and more current data) are on the iBook and the iMac.
So my questions are:
1. Does this sound like a hard drive problem? (My guess: most likely not).
2. Do you think this is the PMU/power manager at fault?

OK, couple questions:
When you were having the problem, did the batttery charge properly after the dead battery incident? Did the battery life indicator show it was charging and all?
I have one here right now that will go from orange to green, but it is not charging the battery. In fact, on first starting, it shows (in system profiler) that the battery is installed but not charging - then when the light turns green it will show that the battery is NOT installed.
Tried all resets, two different batteries, two different power adaptors, external boot, new DC-in board. I guess it's Logic Board next?

PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67 GHz), 1.5GH and cannot install OS X 10.5.6

Can someone assist me please? I have an old PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67 GHz, PowerPC) running with OS X 10.3.9 and I would like to update this to 10.5.6 from an original disk that was with a new macbook pro i purchased this spring. Yet, the old mac tells me I cannot update. I thought i meet all general requirements with the old machine. What am I missing?

All you have to do is buy the Upgrade disc package, and install as an update.
Make sure you clone your drive contents before upgrading. Use an external blank firewire drive and perform through disk utility. Make sure you boot your clone using firewire boot function to verify the clone is working. Sometimes it does not work. After that, simply upgrade your os using the retail upgrade disk. I have performed this taks with a g4 1.5ghz powerbook 12 inch. It runs very well on os 10.5.8.

Problem with Powerbook G4 - 15 inch, machine ins currently connected to the DVI/AVI adapter so I can use the powerbook with a monitor attached, and have been doing so for about 3 months so far, with no problems, now, it wont boot up without giving me the grey screen with the "please restart, hold done restart button for several seconds etc". I did the power management reset, take out battery - even though battery dead, and remove adapter, hold down button for 5 seconds etc... it worked, finally booted up, but the DVI/AVI monitor adapter stuff was not connected when it booted up. When i put them back on, and tried to restart, i get the same "please restart, hold done restart button for several seconds etc" what do you think could be happening, could it be the DVI/AVI adapter or something a lot more serious

You can buy them on eBay brand new and/or used.
No other companies I know of sell just the screen. They sell the screen but also it's part of their service package such as a screen replacement service.
Apple of course, does not sell parts to customers, such as an LCD screen.
There is however, one company I know of that says they sell Apple-compatible screens since Apple does not make their own screens, but gets them from OEM suppliers, to which they in turn get theirs.

** Make sure it is the right screen for your model, wherever you do get it. If you opt for a screen replacement service, they will get it right for you. But if you opt to buy it from someone who sells it by itself, make sure it is compatible and the right one. For instance, don't get a high-res screen if yours doesn't have one to begin with. You won't be able to use it because of the video card in your machine. Same vice versa... don't get a low-res screen if yours is a high-res one.

PowerBook G4 17-inch built-in wireless

My PowerBook G4 17-inch has suddenly lost all range on its wireless. I now need to be within 3 feet or so of the Airport Express. My local apple store wants to replace the Airport card but I think it's an antenna problem. Any ideas, or otherwise, which PCMCIA card should I get that's definitely compatible?

You have to be firm with them. Bottom line, Is your Powerbook still covered under apple care?
If so, YOU DEMAND that they fix the problem. If they want to change the airport express card, what does it matter to you? If that is NOT the problem, and it still doesn't work, Apple is OBLIGED to honour the terms of their agreement, under apple care and fix your powerbook or replace it.
My experience with customer service representatives is that you have to be firm. With each objection you receive, you raise your voice, UNTIL you become so loud, that you are turning away customers. You'll see how fast at that point that they are willing to help you out. Having said all of that, have you tried calling apple? I've called them a few times and they seem very helpful on the phone.
If your PB is NOT covered under warranty ....well, then your screwed. But if it is, THEY HAVE TO FIX IT. YOU have to DEMAND it.

As you said, you just need the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, which should have come in the box with your PowerBook. (I'm sure you know that the other adapter is Mini-DVI to VGA, and will not fit if you tried). If you don't have one, you can get them at Apple (retail and online) for $19.95, or even at Best Buy.
Note that Best Buy sells Apple's adapter, and their own "Dynex" brand which is a bit cheaper. (That is, if your Best Buy has the Apple Shop inside). Or, if you have a CompUSA near you--yes, I know people, they are closing down--you might be able to get one at a discount.

The 15" Powerbooks have two batteries. One is the one you can remove from the bottom of the machine without any screws, the other you need detailed instructions of the computer's interior and special parts to replace. The user accessible battery will only impact Target Disk Mode if you have no A/C power to connect to the wall outlet, and it also is out of juice. The non-user accessible battery if it gets more than 4 years old, can impact Target Disk Mode accessibility even if you are plugged into A/C power from the wall outlet. If your power brick is frayed, it may not be giving power to the computer, or if the power manager is damaged it may not give power to the computer. See my FAQ*:

With respect to your question "When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5?" you are asking us to speculate as to when Apple will release their drivers supporting Windows 8.1. We do not know, and we can not speculate as to when. From the terms of use of this forum:

The planned dates of production or release of Windows 8.1 drivers are speculation about the drivers.

Powerbook G4 Right Speaker Not Working

Hello, i just recently purchased a very gently used Powerbook G4 15 inch, 1.67 Ghz, 2GB Ram, 80GB HDD, OS X 10.4.11. the computer performs phenomenally and overall feels like a brand new computer! however, the right speaker is not working. i understand this is the model with three speakers, left - middle (more proximal to the left speaker) - and right. when i try to slide the volume slider to the left the left most speaker makes sound, when i slide the volume slider to the right, the middle speaker only makes sound. im wondering if the powerbook is mistaking the middle speaker as the right speaker because it only shows two channels - 1 for left and 2 for right - but the "2" is only playing though the middle speaker. i hope theres an easy fix, something thats not hardware related. if it cant be easily fixed then it doesnt hurt me too much because the computer was only 50$

Attach headphones or exteranl speakers. Any sound probelms with those?

Be aware that the note at the bottom of the page referring to an SMC reset only applies to Intel Macs, not PowerBooks.

I looked at some repair guides for 15-inch, 1.67 ghz powerbooks and don't see a reference to more than two speakers, even on the large 17-inch versions.

What is the best external hard drive for backup on powerbook g4 17-inch?

i need to get a good external hard drive for backing up my files on my 2004 powerbook g4 17-inch. up till now ive been using thumbdrives, but i have way too much to backup now. i was thinking of getting the time capsule, but i don't have leopard version with time machine.
what would be an advisable backup to get without buying a new mactop yet?

What I've done is buy the case and drive separately. The case I use is similar to this one: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/ (looks like they don't offer this case with Firewire 800 anymore), and the hard drive is a Western Digital 3.5" Parallel ATA 320GB which Newegg carries at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136109. The reason I like a combination like this is that the enclosure uses the Oxford 911 chipset, and Oxford chipsets have a good track record working with our macs. The Western Digital drive comes with a 3 year warranty (many pre-packaged hard drives only have a one year warranty). It is very easy to install the drive ... you plug in the power and data connectors to the hard drive, and screw the hard drive to the case.
Whatever external hard drive you get, recommend one with a Firewire connection. Our Powerbooks can boot from a Firewire connection, however, cannot boot from a USB-only connection. Also, be aware that for a USB-only connection, if the external hard drive relies on power from it there may be a problem. This is due to the Powerbook putting minimal power out on USB. There are many people who have found that they've had to either get a dual USB cable, a USB powered hub, or an external power supply for their USB-powered external hard drive. The case I mentioned above has it's own external power supply. Firewire-powered drives don't have this problem.
