Will my PowerBook play high-definition DVDs?

Noticed that Netflix offers some titles on HD DVD and am wondering if my PowerBook G4's drive can play them.
Thanks in advance for any help!

You may be able to connect an HD drive to your PowerBook, but that's only half the solution. I'm not sure if a PowerBook has enough horsepower to decode HD video fast enough. For example, download an HD movie trailer from the Apple site and see if your G4 can play it smoothly. Mine can't; Apple's system recommendations for HD at 720p or higher say "1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer." I'm not sure if that's a fair test because the trailers are probably not encoded the same as an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc, but the point is that it's probably worth asking around some more on that subject.

  • Cant play High Definition movies

My mac cant play high definition movies. Even when i open Front Row somewhere in the first minutes the screen goes black but i can hear the movie playing. if i try to open the file from another player it may play the first minutes but it will shut the program down in the middle of the movie... : (

I found on my old system, processor speed is vital to be able to play HD movies/clips.
for example, on my dual 1.42/2gb/128mb video card, I could not play HD content over 720p.
If I tried to play 1080 clips, both processors would peg, I would hear the audio, but the video was either stop motion, or, like yours, blank.
    720 worked fine.

  • HD DVD or High Definition DVD

I would like to no what is the deferince betwin HD DVD and HD-DVD ?
Apple Denmark technical support have told my that HD DVD stands for High Definition DVD or not the medie HD DVD.
    Almfeldt

Actually HD DVD stands for "High Density DVD." It refers to the increased capacity of the HD DVD.
This is kind of amusing thread on that issue and I think Mr. Kelly Freebairn and myself both agree we should just have toematetoe soup

On the HD DVD you can have a project in "HD DVD format" which supports video up to 1080x1920 in size.

  • Can't figure out how to play high definition iTunes TV shows on my TV

I bought a bunch of high definition TV shows from iTunes and when I tried to sync them to
my fifth generation iPod so that I could watch them on my TV, iTunes refused to sync them, gave me the message that they weren't loaded because my iPod couldn't play them. I don't want to play them on my iPod, just want the files on my iPod so that I can connect it to my TV to watch them on my TV.
So how the heck am I supposed to watch them on my TV?
    thanks,
    Erik

I don't want to play them on my iPod, just want the files on my iPod so that I can connect it to my TV to watch them on my TV.
Yes, you are trying to play them on your iPod and display them on your television.
See this -> Can't transfer videos to iPod
"Note: HD content cannot be synced to an iPod. When trying to sync HD content to your device, you will see a prompt like the one above stating that the file was not copied to your iPod because it cannot be played on your iPod."

  • Will my Superdrive play a PAL DVD ?

I have the opportunity to purchase a DVD that I haven't been able to find anywhere for quite some time. The problem is that, according to the description, it is only available in this form: "Region Encoding: ALL, TV system: PAL" .
Since my TV is NTSC (and so is my LG DVD player), I figured I was out of luck. I then thought of my iMac G5 - Will this DVD play on my iMac ?
    Walt
    20" iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   160gbHD, 1.25gbRAM

As Niel mentions, your iMac will play that PAL DVD, but keep in mind that it will be listed as a different region code. Your DVD drive can be switched up to 5 times before it gets locked into that last region. That could be a bad thing.
I bought a PAL concert DVD for a friend and took a different route. I used Handbrake to extract the image, then used iMovie to edit it with transitions and such, then used iDVD to create a disk with menus and everything. It looked very nice if I do not say so myself.

  • Is a high definition DVD burner available for Mac's?

I have a HD camcorder (Canon XHA1) and am using Final Cut express HD. I have been very disappointed in the results I have obtained when burning my Final Cut projects to a standard DVD.(After finishing my FCE project, I use IDVD to produce a disc image, then burn to a standard 4.7 GB Sony or Verbatim DVD-R) Many of my clients now have blu ray players and high def TV's and want their videos in high definition. Is a high definition burner available for a mac pro so that I can burn high definition discs?

Thanks Tom for the link. However, I noticed when reading through the info about this blu-ray drive that it made no mention of being compatible with Final Cut Express HD or IDVD which is what I am currently using. I had considered upgrading to Final Cut Studio but it sounds like this drive is only compatible when used with Adobe Premiere Pro and Encore CS4. I am no techie, so pardon my ignorance about all this. Is Toast a "replacement" for IDVD? Could I use FCExpress (or FC studio if I upgrade) then burn the DVD using toast? Does Toast have menu templates like IDVD?
If anyone has any experience using this blu-ray drive on their Mac with Final Cut and IDVD or Toast I would appreciate some input on what the exact workflow is and if the whole process has been a positive experience.
Thanks so much for your help!

  • 20" does it play High Definition?

I just ordered the Quad power mac, and am looking at getting the 20'' acd. I read a couple places that it is not HD like the 23'' and 30'' are. Is this correct because then in Macconnections catalog they describe it as an apple cinema HD display.
    Thank you.

Although Apple does not market the 20" display as 'HD,' it is nevertheless capable of the minimum HD-TV resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Fully compliant HD displays, however, must achieve at least a 1920x1080 pixel resolution. At the moment only the 23" and 30" displays exceed this specification, and that is why Apple markets them as HD displays.

  • HOW TO MAKE A HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DVD WITH PREMIERE CS2

I have been working with my CS2 Premiere to create some auto play high definition, audio-only DVDs that are autoplay.  To clear the air, yes I know that CS4 will permit 24bit-96 kHz.  For the time being 16 bit-48 kHz, is still better (marginally) than CD, but it permits greater playing times.  Yes, I know that the autoplay without menues "feature" is bogus, and was never corrected by Adobe.  So much for their interest in their customers.
I found a simple workaround for the autoplay/no menues feature.  Just make a DVD-RW with menues.  Then use DVD-DeCryper/Shrink/Nero - whatever to make an autoplay DVD onto a permanent disc.  It works well.
Here is my latest crazy problem: How to get really long playing time.  I know I can make high qualitye DVD-A's up to 3 hours using Minatonka Bronze.  Unfortunately, DVD-A discs are worthless as they cannot play in 90% of DVD players, but they prove the time point.
I have three 48 kHz files that I created in Adobe Audion.  The were 1.599, 0.911, and 0.974 GBs in size.  That added up to 3.480.  The playing time is about 2:30 Hours; quite a bit less than 3 hours.   I tried burning a DVD with these, audio-files-only.  I checked lowest quality video, used no video, and got an Export To DVD error that I had "insufficient" space on the 4.7 GB disc!  So, I used the two latter files, which added to only 1.884 GB.  Premiere did not baulk, and it successfully burned a DVD that played.  Then I added the 1.599 GB file, and, once again, it produced an error.  This was clearly not going to work.
At this point, I realized that Audition had done what it liked to do: It had saved the 16 bit-48 kHz files as 32 bit-48 kHz!  So, I went back to Audition and used EDIT to change the files to genuine 16 bit-48 kHz files.  When I opened them in Premiere, Premiere reported 16 bit-48 kHz files.  Their sizes were now, 0.799, 0.456, and 0.487 GB.  Please note that this totals 1.742 GB.  This is less than the 1.884 GB I had successfully used before.   Once again, I was getting the "inssufficient" space error.  This is nuts.  The disc can hold 4.3+ GB, but won't fit 1.742.GB.
    So, anybody got some ideas?
    Mike

    Jim,
I cannot believe you are wasting my time and the space of this forum with your irrelevances.  It would have been better had you just tried to answer my question, which is the purpose of these forums.  Why engage in useless chatter?
I said nothing about any great sonic difference betweein 16/48 and 16/44 digital audio; I said "marginally."   In English that means very little difference.  I'm not going to prove to you with distortion and frequency response plots that there is some minor difference, it is a fact of life.  You, in fact, just stated a difference.  The difference between a 24 kHz cutoff and a 22 kHz custoff  is a difference which you give, to back up your absurd statement that there is no difference.  This can actually translate to a minor, difference in THD at higher audio frequencies, but who cares?   Well, you apparently care, because your beligerant non-reply to my question was that "fewer...would notice ."  In English that means that some would notice.
What my question had to do with MP3 junk, or multichannel sound, I don't know.  Why should I do, as you suggest, and make DVD-A's when one needs only stereo?  This is a Premier forum, not a DVD-A forum.  Why not bother DVD-A junkies on Minatonka fourms?  DVDs can handle stereo PCM very nicely.  Classic Audio has marketed their 24/96 DADs for many years and so have a few other companies.   They have been well received by some "golden eared" types.  I hope they don't upset you.  There is a good possibility that DVD may only be around as a "legacy" feature on BLU RAY in future years.  DVD-A was DOA years ago and SACD may go just away; DVD-A is almost that.  So, PCM stereo sound DVD's are a good bet that the resultant disc will be playable on many people's players as well as future players.  The longer playing time that may be available would make listening to concerts easier, rather than breaking them up into segments.
If you want to argue my motives, or tastes, I suggest you go to another forum and discuss you theories.  If you actually have something productive to say about the problem I pointed out, that would be welcome.
    Mike

  • Burning High Definition Video to DVD

I'm using a Canon HV30 with iMovie '09. How do I save the movies to DVD? Is there a high definition DVD burner that I can buy to save the movies to? If not, what's the point of a high definition camcorder if I can use the functionality? I'm guessing I'm missing something.

Nope; that's the way it is!
Apple would like you to produce hi-def files which you put on your Mobile.Me internet service, or put on your AppleTV, for people to see them.
You can, of course, get an external Blu-Ray burner and buy "Toast 10" to burn your HD files ..or you can burn HD files (..about 20 mins' worth..) onto a standard DVD using Toast or Apple's 'DVD Studio Pro' ..but they won't play on ordinary DVD players, possibly will on old Toshiba HD-DVD players, and should play on Macs.
It's the hi-def wars: burn to disc vs. distribute as (moderately) hi-def H.264/MPEG-4 files.
"..what's the point of a high definition camcorder if I can use the functionality?.." ..exactly!
Sometimes I put them on my Mobile.Me Gallery, sometimes I put them on my AppleTV ..now if only I could get this Serial-ATA LG Blu-Ray burner recognised by my Mac I'd be busy burning ..but which of my friends or relations has a Blu-Ray player on which to play the finished article if I send them a BD disc?
Wake me up again in 4 years' time, when this has all been resolved..

  • Will recording in HD mean it can only play in hd dvd players?

im looking into getting a sony hdr-hc7 and i was wondering if i record my video in hd then make it into a DVD using iDVD if it would only be able to play in HD dvd players and if you had to burn the video to HD dvd discs? does the HD mean itll be better quality than regular minidv but u can still play it only a regular tv. or will you have to have an hd tv if u want to see what you recorded in HD. so i guess im asking 2questions. one about the HD DVD and then the other by just hooking up the camera to a tv. thanks

Well, most HDV cameras out there have the ability to convert to SD (standard definition) as you capture to your hard drive. I have a Sony FX1 and it has this. Not sure about the HC7, but probably. You can look in the manual under downconvert or something of the like. Its a setting in the menu system of the camera.
Usually what I do is shoot everything in HDV and then use the downconvert system to edit as I rarely have anyone requesting HD for the final piece. You could skip capturing SD and capture HD and then edit and export your piece back to tape (for viewing on an HDTV) or out to an HD version of quicktime (for web or computer viewing).
To put something out to HD DVD, you need an HD DVD recorder and blank media (both extremely expensive whether you go with Blu-Ray or HD DVD). Oh, and you will also need some High Def DVD mastering software.
    Anyway, there's my 2 cents.

  • High Definition trailers to be converted for dvd

Hi, how if possible can i put a High Definition quictime trailer onto a dvd, at dvd quality. I have quick time 7 pro and just wondred if this is possible.
      Windows XP

There are very few High Definition DVD players available.
But you could encode them using the older (MPEG-2) formats using current software.
Since you're not working with the "source" files the quality will be degraded and the size reduced to fit the current DVD formats (about 720X480).
You'll need some software (easy on a Mac with iMovie or iDVD) to convert the downloads to .dv format to use in your PC DVD authoring app. QuickTime Pro can also export to DV Stream (.dv) for use in your PC software (Movie Maker?) that you can burn to DVD.
