Will my songs be deleted if I update my iPod?

I heard from other people that if you update an iPod, the songs won't be deleted. However, when I pressed the "Update" button on my iTunes, it says "Updating to iOS 4.2 will delete all media. To preserve your media, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos, and photos." It goes on to say "Updating on this computer will only preserve apps, contacts, calendars, and other settings. etc." Should I still update it? I really don't want to lose my songs. :/
I've already synced my iPod on the computer I've always used by the way.

Good if everything that is on the iPod is on the computer, then it's no matter that your content on the iPod gets wiped during the update, you can just sync it again from the computer.
The media only on the iPod gets wiped during the update, not what's on your computer.

Well what's going to happen when you update iOS on the iPod is it's going to wipe the data off of it, so that leaves you with only one copy of your media, on the computer.
If something goes wrong with the computer, you could lose all your media.
So it's best to always have 2 copies (or more) of your media at all times so you can always restore from the backup.
To do this all you have to do is insert DVD-R's and iTunes > File > Library > Backup Library and iTunes will burn your media to the DVD-R(s) as many as you need.
Please do this often, as Apple does NOT offer re-downloads of your media and computers are flaky.

This is rediculous!!! What type of "UPDATE" erases EVERYTHING when it fails?????? I'd like to update my iOS to 6, and I'm iOS 5.1, but I don't want my apps and stuff to be deleted nor do I have access to my PC to back it up. (I also don't wnt to back up to iCloud cuz how will that save my apps?!) So will my apps be deleted if I update. (Wirelessly?)

If you backup to iCloud, your apps will be downloaded again from backup if you need to restore the device. If you backup with iCloud - your app data will be in there as well.
I have never lost anything when updating my iPad. I am updating wirelesssy right now even as I type this response. I'm typing on my computer - but the iPad is in the process of updating right now.

When I update my iPods software, will my music be deleted? I did it before and lost everything. Just want to make sure

- If you update by the Software Update in Settings>General nothing is lost unless there is a glitch
- If you update via iTunes all your synced media has to be in your iTunes library since the backup that iTunes makes as the first step does not included synced media like apps and music.

I just reformatted my hard drive, deleting my iTunes songs folder in my Documents and Settings folder. However, I still do have all of my songs on my iPod. Usually when you connect it, iTUnes give this long message that basicly says "This ipod is linked to a different library do you want to delete whats on it" and you just hit NO.
But if you want to be on the safe side, hold the shift and ctrl keys down, WHILE HOLDING THEM connect the ipod and wait for itunes to open and list the ipod before you let go of the keys.
After either one you do (Be it the shift key was or the connect and get message) you goto edit>preferences>ipod and set it to "Manual update"
Once on "Manual Update", you can use third party programs to copy all the songs back to the PC if you need to.
Since you are starting with a blank iTunes library I take for granted, Id suggest podutil (Link Below). Once you have podutil, close iTUnes and open podutil with the ipod connected.
In Podutil hit "Copy To" to set it to the location you want it to copy the songs on your PC. Then hit "Copy Settings" and check both "Add tracks to iTUnes" and "Rebuild Playlists". then start the copy.
Its trailware so after every 50 songs it copys, you get a pop up, just hit "OK" for it to continue

Ok, so I had to use a different computer than I did before because that one is totalled (both are pc's). I am positive I was signed in to my itunes account. Basically, itmes like music, apps themselves and some other suff is not part of the backup so after the update they can't be sunced from the iTunes library since they are not in the iTunes library.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Well, my iPod Touch is generation 2 (I think). Anyway, I want to update it except I'm afraid that it might erase all the apps, songs, pictures and movies I had downloaded and synced in it. I don't really have a problem with the songs and movies being deleted, I can always sync it again from my laptop. I'm worried about the apps and pictures. Will they be affected?

As a clarification, the backup that iTunes makes does not include media synced to the iPod like apps, music, synced photos (photos taken by the iPod are backed up). If the media is not in the iTunes library on computer for synced photos), it will not be on the iPod after the update. For what is in the backup see:

when i updated to the most recent iTunes ALL 12,650 songs in my Library from the last 10 years were re-set as if they were added on 4/8/14! This is STUPID! Can it be corrected?

Date added data is only stored in the library.itl file. You can try reloading the backup copy of the file (old iTunes libraries) into a blank library (hold down option/alt key while starting iTunes to make one) and rebuilding a library back to the point in time of the upgrade.

For the past few days, when I connect my ipod into my laptop, itunes wants me to "Set Up Your Ipod". I am confused because it's already set up. I have over 400 songs and i have photos on it so I really don't want to do anything that could erase it. Is it ok to go on with the set up?

Why doesn't the older updater version get deleted when you update the Ipod

I just downloaded the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 and updated my new iPod.
Which caused me to have 3 updaters on my PC I was able to delete iPod Updater 2005-09-23 but when I try to delete iPod Updater 2005-02-07 it will not delete. I used the add/remove programs to delte the first one. And I deleted the setup icon for that one too.

Well I don't have an answer to that but yeah I also did noticed when I updated to the new iPod updater and I had to remove it too; just wanted to say that incase you thought it wasn't normal

You can contact iTunes and explain what happens and then may allow aa redownload. Unlike for apps and music (some countires only) a redownload is not guaranteed.
