Will my songs get deleted if...

I plug my ipod into the computer when i just downloaded itunes. My computer crashed before and i am having to redownload it. My bro says if i plug it in all the songs will delete. What will happen?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
If at any stage you get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel" and your iPod should connect without syncing. Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
TuneJack Windows Only
iPod2PC Windows Only
iGadget Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
iRepo Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Will my songs get deleted?

I just reformatted my hard drive, deleting my iTunes songs folder in my Documents and Settings folder. However, I still do have all of my songs on my iPod. If I plug it into my computer to charge/update, will all the songs get deleted from it? i.e. Whenever you update and the song isn't in iTunes, it gets deleted from the iPod. I'm just wondering if this will apply to this situation. Thanks.

Usually when you connect it, iTUnes give this long message that basicly says "This ipod is linked to a different library do you want to delete whats on it" and you just hit NO.
But if you want to be on the safe side, hold the shift and ctrl keys down, WHILE HOLDING THEM connect the ipod and wait for itunes to open and list the ipod before you let go of the keys.
After either one you do (Be it the shift key was or the connect and get message) you goto edit>preferences>ipod and set it to "Manual update"
Once on "Manual Update", you can use third party programs to copy all the songs back to the PC if you need to.
Since you are starting with a blank iTunes library I take for granted, Id suggest podutil (Link Below). Once you have podutil, close iTUnes and open podutil with the ipod connected.
In Podutil hit "Copy To" to set it to the location you want it to copy the songs on your PC. Then hit "Copy Settings" and check both "Add tracks to iTUnes" and "Rebuild Playlists". then start the copy.
Its trailware so after every 50 songs it copys, you get a pop up, just hit "OK" for it to continue

Greenz has a good point.  It seems Apple does not, nor has ever had a decent solution for users that have ever had a hardcopy CD they didn't get from iTunes.  It always keeps just what was purchased from Apple and tries it's best to trash everything else unless you go through a twelve step process to as one contributor posted above, "protect yourself from yourself".
Why in the world would I need to do that...they've been in the game for too long for this unacceptable nonesense time and again.  I am not trying to harm myself--I would keep my music if up to me .  Please help to find a real and permanent fix.
I did not steal my music like some do so I would appreciate Apple not losing it.

  • Songs get deleted!

    Hi all,
Thismis my first post..please forgive me if this issue has been dealt with before.
I have just purchased an Ipod Shuffle. Here's my problem: 1. I transfer songs from my hard drive to Itunes and then to the Shuffle.
    2. I disconnect the shuffle...the songs play fine.
    3. I then delete the songs from my hard drive (as I don't need them once they are on the shuffle).
    4. The next time I connect the shuffle to the computer and Itunes the songs get deleted!
So, do I have to keep the songs on my computer hard drive?
How would I then add new songs to my shuffle without losing the others? In a "normal" mp3 player it's just a matter of dragging songs to the device..the shuffle seems more complicated. I've also noticed that when the shuffle is connected to the computer and I look in the Ipod folder in windows explorer, there are 3 folders "F0" F1" and "F3" and there are some songfiles in each. What's going on?
    Advice appreciated for this novice.
    Cheers,
    Paul

If you remove the songs from your library the next time you connect to the Shuffle they will be deleted which is as designed and part of DRM. If you've already listened to them on the Shuffle do you still need them, assuming you don't want them anymore since you removed them from your library.
You can drag and drop songs manually using iTunes without removing what is on it, assuming there is space left. Check the settings for options in your Shuffle.

Not sure, but you should be able to redownload them if they were iTunes purchases or re-sync them form iTunes if they are in your iTunes library.

I have random songs that a have paid for but they just disappear, or cannot be downloaded and so on. Sometimes they are indexed wrongly, and can't be found because of that, no work around because also the search function of itunes has gotten totally unusable. Not much fun to be an apple user anymore. I once used to be a very loyal user. My first apple was a Macintosh SE and an image writer II.

  • Every time I charge my shuffle, my songs get deleted

I have a first gen shuffle, every time I plug it into my comp's USB, the songs on my shuffle get deleted. It blinks orange, green, orange, green... So I have to rechoose all my songs onto my shuffle. How can I get it so that I don't have to do this everytime I charge? (I only charge on one computer, the same one I choose my songs on). This hasn't been aproblem for me in the past...
    Thanks!

I would suggest that you restore your iPod.

  • Songs get deleted on ipod when i delete them from the library

This is really annoying, I don't know if its the new iTunes or my new ipod shuffle. But what happens is when i delete a song from iTunes, Those songs are deleted from my ipod when i sync it to the library. I use windows. Now i'm afraid to sync my old ipod (gen 4) to the new itunes cause i'm afriad the same thing will happen and thousands of songs will be deleted off my ipod.
    PC   Windows XP

Forget that post ... the KB article referred to doesn't apply to Shuffles.
The Shuffle simply works differently. It doesn't have any exact equivalent to the normal 'sync' mode (it uses Autofill instead) and, essentially, is always operating in a reduced version of Manual Mode as experienced on other iPods.
The Shuffle will also be tied to only one single iTunes library at a time, and you can absolutely expect that deleting a track from the Library will also delete it from the Shuffle's playlist (in exactly the same way that deleting a track from your Library also deletes it from all other playlists .... no difference at all).
The only direct way to prevent that from happening is to set things up so that the Shuffle won't launch iTunes as soon as it's plugged in.

  • If I deauthorize all computers, will my songs be deleted?

If I deauthorize all computers, will all my purchased songs be deleted?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    No.

  • When I update my software on my iPod, will my songs be deleted

When I update my iPods software, will my music be deleted? I did it before and lost everything. Just want to make sure

    - If you update by the Software Update in Settings>General nothing is lost unless there is a glitch
    - If you update via iTunes all your synced media has to be in your iTunes library since the backup that iTunes makes as the first step does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • Will my songs be deleted if I update my iPod?

I heard from other people that if you update an iPod, the songs won't be deleted. However, when I pressed the "Update" button on my iTunes, it says "Updating to iOS 4.2 will delete all media. To preserve your media, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos, and photos." It goes on to say "Updating on this computer will only preserve apps, contacts, calendars, and other settings. etc." Should I still update it? I really don't want to lose my songs. :/
I've already synced my iPod on the computer I've always used by the way.

...my iPod and computer has the same songs. I always sync my iPod with the computer that has my iTunes and everything, which is the one I'm using right now.
Good if everything that is on the iPod is on the computer, then it's no matter that your content on the iPod gets wiped during the update, you can just sync it again from the computer.
The media only on the iPod gets wiped during the update, not what's on your computer.

Am I able to backup my songs on the computer or do I have to use a CD?
Well what's going to happen when you update iOS on the iPod is it's going to wipe the data off of it, so that leaves you with only one copy of your media, on the computer.
If something goes wrong with the computer, you could lose all your media.
So it's best to always have 2 copies (or more) of your media at all times so you can always restore from the backup.
To do this all you have to do is insert DVD-R's and iTunes > File > Library > Backup Library and iTunes will burn your media to the DVD-R(s) as many as you need.
Please do this often, as Apple does NOT offer re-downloads of your media and computers are flaky.

  • Will my songs be deleted?

For the past few days, when I connect my ipod into my laptop, itunes wants me to "Set Up Your Ipod". I am confused because it's already set up. I have over 400 songs and i have photos on it so I really don't want to do anything that could erase it.  Is it ok to go on with the set up?

If the music on the iPod is not in iTunes, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Will my apps get deleted if i dont' authorize?

my mac is saying that i have already authorized to 5 computers?

No,  they won't be deleted. If you have computers authorized that don't need to be:
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.
