Will my sony dcr-ip55 work with imovie 08?

Sorry, I'm not up with all the formats but imovie hd 6.0.3 would not import footage shot with a sony dcr-ip55 which records in the micro mv format. Will iMovie 08 work with this format or do I need some sort of converter?
Mark

Probably.
"iMovie supports standard and high definition video, as well as the most popular formats, including DV, HDV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and even AVCHD."
microMV is recording in MPEG-2.

    Hi
Looking to buy a camcorder to use with my G4 ibook.
will the above work and will i have to buy anything extra to
    get it to work ??
any other info on other camcorders welcome.
I am a complete beginner so basic answers please

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
    Yes, it'll work.
You'll also need to buy a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (also known as DV or i.Link) cable to connect a camcorder to your Mac. This cable will not be in the box, although a USB cable will probably be. The USB cable is for transferring stills, not video.
For a review of this camcorder (..it may take a while to load..) read here.

  • Will a Sony Digital 8 work with my iBook G4?

    Good Evening,
Given my 10 years of service with my company, I have been given the opportunity to receive a Sony DCRTRV-280 digital 8 camcorder.
Will this work with my iBook G4?
Having read some past posts, it seems like it will work, but not without jumping through a couple of hoops.
Anyone have experience with this unit being used on a mac?
    Thanks,
    Chris
    1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 512MB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I use a Sony Digital-8 TRV 330E, and it works perfectly with my G3 and G4 PowerBooks, Mac mini, etc.
In the UK, and the rest of Europe, some lower-priced camcorders have a FireWire OUT connection ..so that you can feed your footage into iMovie.. but don't necessarily have a FireWire IN connection ..for feeding your edited footage back to a tape in the camcorder. You may want to check and see if the DCRTRV-280 does have FireWire IN, but it's sure to have FireWire OUT, so that you can take the footage from the camera and edit it.
But there WON'T be a FireWire cable in the box with the camera: you'll have to buy one separately ..you'll need a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (..also called 'DV' or 'i.Link' or IEEE..) cable from a camcorder or electronics shop.

  • Do Sony camera's work with iMovie?

I'm curious if all types of mini dv cameras work with macs? Do I ahve to have special software for a camera model to have it connect into imovie for importing video? I have a Sony DCR-TRV33.
If you know, I'd be grateful.
    thanks,
    Matthew

    Hi Matthewalb:
    Welcome to the discussions!
Yes, your Sony should work. All you need is a 4 to 6-pin FireWire cable (Sony calls them iLink), the camera and your mac with imovie installed. No extra anything needed (except your imagination..)

  • Sony DCR-PC55 worked w/ iMovie, doesn't with iMovie HD 6.0.2

I was able to import video from my Sony handycam - iMovie was able to see the camera, control it, and even automatically import video. I "upgraded" to iMovie HD, and now the exact same camera, docking station and firewire cable no longer works. iMovie HD is unable to connect to the camera at all. What changed?
I've tried hard resetting the camera, resetting the time in the camera to match my Mac, replacing the iLink/FireWire cable, and the "workaround" using GarageBand, all to no avail. Very frustrating...
Is it relatively easy to uninstall iMovieHD and reinstall iMovie? I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

    Hi Craig
May be You find some help in my list:
Print it out and tic one idea at a time.
    Mac:
    - hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture.
10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
    13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
    ◊ Reset PRAM
    ◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
    - software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
◊ Did You select the right sort of project? DV, DV Widescreen, HDV 1080i , HDV 20p, MPEG-4 or iSight.
    iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    ◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
    ◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
    Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
    Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.

    NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.
    I had a similar problem -
Macbook + iMovie HD + HDV Camera = No import
Took me a little while to work out that the project file I had opened and was trying to capture into was set to DV and not HDV 1080i, hence iMovie was not detecting my H
DV camera's signal - hence always reverting to the isight camera.
Try opening a new project. At the filename dialog box, you should see an 'options' button which should allow you to select the appropriate video format depending on your needs. You should be able to choose between DV, DV Widescreen, HDV 1080i and HDV 720i. Choose DV or DV Widescreen if you're about to import from a DV camera. iMovie's default might be HDV.
    All the best!.. "ahroyboy"

  • Will iDVD 7.1.2 work with iMovie 11?

I have iDVD version 7.1.2 and iMovie 9 (v8.0.6). If I upgrade both iPhoto and iMovie to 11 from 09 will iMovie 11 be compatible with my current version of iDVD?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

    • Share to Media Browser (NOT TO iDVD as this too degrades the final product) AND AS LARGE or Medium (as down scaling HD also gives a BAD result)
use the Share to Media Browser then open iDVD, then save that to disk image.  So I can follow the same steps if I upgrade to iMovie 11?
YES - and to a good quality - but not 100% of what iDVD can do.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Following is based on MY OWN Experience and Results - - - others may be of other opinions - but should then tell howto make a better result so that it can be tested and Compared ! - - - -
    1. My original footage was shot at 1920 x 1280 on Canon vixia HF M500. I believe it was shot at 60i frame rate. Will I experience the quality loss from the discarding of half the frames that iMovie '11 apparently does?
YES - this happens when going from Event's to Project's and can not be mended afterwards. What's lost - is lost.
    2. Seems to me 60i would be equivalent to 30p, would this not be OK? And if standard definition DVDs are only 30 frames interlaced anyways (is this correct?), and iMovie drops half my 60i frames, I haven't really lost anything have I?
YES - as iDVD only can digest - interlaced SD-Video - feeding it HD or material that has lost every second line can not be healed - but HD will be downscaled - AND iDVD DOES THIS BADLY. Result worse than if it got interlaced SD-Video in firsthand.
    2. When I watch my Dvd I see quite a bit of noise, possibly some color loss, some jagged edges on diagonal straight lines, and a lot of pixelation (mostly in some smoke in my scene). However I've only watched it on my large HD television and my Mac monitor so I'm not sure if this is the loss of quality discussed or just the result of watching standard definition on my high definition set. Are these symptoms indicitive of the problem discussed here?
YES - but there are DVD-players (HD-screens) that can make this more OR LESS prominent due to clever picture computing in this device
    3. Are there ANY solutions out there at all that can produce a high quality (highest possible quality of standard definition that is) DVD from my current iMovie '11 project? I've spent countless hours editing an hour long movie and I'm absolutely crushed as I am just learning now of these limitations of iMovie '11.
NO - there are ways to copy the lines left to make the problem less noticeable - but what's lost - IS LOST
My movie looks so great in iMovie right now. Its hard to believe from this excellent "source" nothing can be done. Very frustrated.
Me too  That's why I use
    • iMovie HD - or -
    • FinalCut
When I want a DVD of best possibly DVD Standard
Next step to increase quality is Blu-Ray and delivering on BD-Disks or USB-memory stick - See Roxio Toast™ Pro incl BD-Component.

  • Sony DCR-TRV70 Compatibility with IMovie HD

When I bought the Sony DV camcorder it was on the comaptible list from Apple. It is not now. With the supplied USB cable my Imac / IMovie HD does not recognize the camera. Has anyone had luck connecting this camcorder to Imovie HD?

You need to buy a Firewire cable, 4-pin to 6-pin. Sony calls them i.Link. USB is just for stills.

  • Will Intensity Pro by Blackmagic work with iMovie

I want to capture component video using the Intensity Pro by Blackmagic. I do not want to spend the big bucks to record to a Disk Array uncompressed. If I compress the video can I import the files to iMovie for editing?

Does this from Matti Haveri help?
To convert a DVD or MPEG to DV with MPEG Streamclip (v1.5.1 or later):
Open a desired .VOB on a DVD (DVD/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB, for example) or a MPEG file. Select the In/Out points if you want to extract just a portion of the video. Choose "File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)".
Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
MPEG Streamclip can optionally resample audio to 48 kHz which DV (and DVD) use (use this option when converting (S)VCD 44.1 kHz audio for DV).
Other settings can usually be at their defaults. Sometimes you have to check whether the input/output is PAL or NTSC.

  • HT3290 Will my Sony Handycam DCR-SR68 work with I-Movie

Will My Sony Handycam DCR-SR68 work with I-movie for downloading video? I was able to get the photos I had on it to download onto I-Photo, But I want the video to download also, so I can edit them and burn to a DVD. Please Help, this is driving me nuts!!!

According to the iMovie Supported Cameras List, your camera should work with iMovie 11.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
You would need to connect the camera via USB, and the camera would need to be plugged in to AC power (not batteries only). Then use FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA. The camera probably needs to be put in Playback mode, but some cameras need to be in PC Attach mode. Check your manual.

  • Which Sony camcorder will work with iMovie 8, HDRTG1?

Since I upgraded ilife 08, I cannot capture video from my Sony PC3 to iMovie 08, it keeps dropping out. I think it's time to get a new one, this one is old. I like Sony product, does HDRTG1 work with iMovie 08? Anyone? Thanks Alex

  • HD camcorders that will work with imovie.

I am considering replacing my old Sony mini DV SD camcorder with a mid quality HD one. I read that there are problems with most of them on the apple website. Does anyone know which memorycard camcorder will work with imovie or do I have to go with an old HD DVtape one? It will be used mainly to video show jumping indoors. There are good discontinued Sony ones still available but I would prefer newer technology and it needs to be reasonably compact and light, but a step up from entry level.

  • I have a new imac with imovie 11 however my hd everio camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9 how do i download imovie 9? all i can find are updates and my mac says i don't need it

i have a new imac with imovie 11 however my everio hd camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9. i tried to download imovie 9 but my mac says i don't need the update. How can i download imovie 8 or 9 complete not the update?

I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased  any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered  them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me  the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. It's 200 bucks so before i order the install disc i would like to try your suggestion. My email address is [email protected] Again I thank you very much for your help! George

  • Will it work with iMovie 8.0.6. PANASONIC DVX 100A?

    Hello
I am bidding on a Panasonic camera PANASONIC DVX 100A. I "heard" that it works with iMovie, BUT, I would like to double check with you on the support board.
I thank you all in advance.
    Xeno

Best to ask this question on the iMovie forum if you want to be sure someone who uses iMovie and that camera sees the question.
Still, if your computer has a firewire 400 port, the camera can be controlled by the computer.
Depending on the how much you want to use the camera and how many hours there already are on the heads, you may want to use less expensive DV cam (or find something like a Sony DSR-11) as the playback device to keep the wear and tear on the dvx down.
    good luck,
    x
